F or several years my wife has leased barn space on our farm to participants

in the winter horse show cir-cuit. These Canadian visitors are appreciative of the Florida sunshine and warmer tem-peratures, noting that even on a cold day it is much warmer here than in Ontario.

Typically these folks return year after year and upon their departure last spring they left behind a couple of patio planters with several variet-ies of herbs. I was impressed that someone who is so far from home with the respon-sibility of training, caring for and showing horses could be bothered planting a “garden.” When I mentioned this one of the ladies replied, “Oh, I have to have fresh herbs for cook-ing.” It was a reminder that regardless of where you live, there are always good reasons to garden.

Planting herbs will be one of several topics discussed when Marion County Extension presents Florida Gardening 101, a garden series that will be held from 6–8:30 p.m., Feb. 1-5, at the Marion County Extension Office in Ocala. Interested parties may contact 671-8400 to obtain additional information or to register.

The days of late January and early February are opportune times to plan for the spring vegetable and herb garden.

If you are fortunate enough to have land for a small garden plot and have never gardened before, late January is a good time to spade vegetation under so it will break down before the garden is planted in early March.

Starting small is the first thing to consider. Our 4-H garden plots are 20 feet by 26 feet, and we have found this to be very sufficient for a

family of four. You can always expand if needed and many a would-be gardener has given up because they started too big and found the garden too much work to care for. Even a patio space is sufficient for a couple small containers in which to raise herbs, peppers and tomatoes.

In locating your garden, give thought to light as vegetables need a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight each day. Full sun is optimal for vegetable production. Next, be sure to locate close to a water source as you will need to supplement with irrigation during the dry days of spring.

In order to know what nutri-ents to apply to your garden you will first need to know what is missing. A soil test, available at the University of Florida lab for $7, will indicate which nutrients are pres-ent in the soil. A test kit may be obtained from your local Extension office.

Testing now, in January, will give you time to get results in plenty of time for use in your spring garden.

Garden season in North Central Florida is much dif-ferent than other climates and probably comes down to temperature as the key determinant. It may be help-ful to think of this in three parts: warm season — early March through early June; hot season — June through mid-September; and cool season — the remainder of

the year. Only a few veg-etables will tolerate the heat of summer, primarily okra and peppers. If it is to be produc-tive, the warm season requires an early start, generally early March, and these vegetables encounter an early end, about June 1.

These warm season veg-etables include many favorites found in summer gardens in northern climates. The University of Florida has a list-ing of cool and warm season vegetables in its “Vegetable Gardening Guide,” a very comprehensive publication that will be useful to new and experienced gardeners. Call your local Extension office to obtain a copy.

For vegetable plants, irriga-tion to supplement rainfall is necessary for optimum plant growth. Often there is a thin line between too much and not enough water. I have found a commercial quality rain gauge to be a very useful tool in navi-gating the dilemma of when and how much water to apply. Water needs will be affected by temperature, day length, rainfall, soil type and other elements. Check your system to insure a consistent amount is applied to your plot.

As a very general recom-mendation, a daily application of a quarter inch of water to most vegetables is sufficient, but not too much. Of course all of the above factors will affect how much and when to water and you will need to manage this carefully based on condi-tions at your site.

Food that is fresh and of good quality is the reward that accrues to those who under-take the work of the vegetable garden.

For those who put in the required consistent effort, the rewards are rich indeed.

Q: I have a canvas painting I bought at a local roadside thrift shop several years ago. I have always wondered about its origin whether it is an antique. I cannot find the art-ist’s signature unfortunately. If there is one, it may well be hidden beneath the frame, but it appears stuck to the frame and I do not want to damage it. Is there anything at all about this painting you may be able to tell me?  Attached are a few pictures. — M.R., Ocala 

A: I do not think you have a painting. It appears to be a commercial grade printed copy of an early Dutch master painting. Open the back and see if there are any notations. Potential dollar value, if a print, is catch-as-catch-can. 

Q: I am enclosing pictures of a piece of furniture that I pur-chased a few years back from a church thrift shop in South Florida. It is approximately 5 feet long and 17 ½ inches wide. It has three tiles on the top with pictures of Williamsburg, Vir-ginia. However, the middle tile has a crack in it. It has two sets of doors that open and has lots of storage inside. I did refinish it when I bought it but I somehow think it looks as original as it

“I always recommend installing a dimmer to control the light output and create a differ-ent atmosphere in the room,” she says. That might mean bright lights when you get dressed, for instance, and soft lighting while you soak in the tub.

For makeup applica-tion, task lighting’s your best friend, she says: “I suggest mounting wall sconces on either side of the mirror to provide shadow-free lighting on the face.”

LED lighting has had a big impact on bath design. Old-school vanity lighting often involved harsh fluo-rescents or intrusive marquee lights. Now, the lighting can be embed-ded in the mirror itself, and the reflection can be warm and flattering. Duravit’s L-Cube mirror, for instance, is a frame of LED light that can be dimmed with a touch of the hand.

LEDs have also given product designers new places to put lighting, such as under toilet seat rims and around the perimeters of spa tubs.

In some cases, the lights change color, so the mood of the room can be adjusted, to provide a soothing blue, say, or a

zesty yellow/orange glow.Or opt for a color-

changing HotelSpa or DreamSpa shower head from ipShower, with colors that shift depending on the water temperature.

Designers are also pull-ing in lighting from other rooms — such as chande-liers and pendants — to amp up the drama and luxe look in a bathroom.

Unnecessary regulatory burdens are preventing qualified, credit-worthy borrowers from obtaining

the American Dream of homeownership. That’s according to testimony from the National Association of

Realtors® before the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs committee. “Realtors® support

strong underwriting standards to protect consumers from the risky lending practices of the past, but

we are concerned that the pendulum has swung too far. In some cases, well-intentioned, bot over-

corrective policies are severely hampering the ability of millions of qualified buyers to purchase a home.

I believe, and our members believe, that we have yet to strike the right balance between regulation and

opportunity,” said NAR Past President Chris Polychron.

Despite historically low mortgage rates, the number of first-time buyers entering the market is at

the lowest point since 1987 and the nation’s homeownership rate has almost fallen to levels last seen

in 1990. NAR will continue to work with congress and the administration to develop balanced housing

policies that protect borrowers while supporting a robust housing market.

As we perch on the edge of a brand-new year, it’s always fun to guess what will be hot in the coming 12 months. What will be the rage on the fashion runways? And, most important to me, what new interior design trends will be sweeping the market? One of my favorite brand-new-year tradi-tions is to ask interior style maker and trend spotter Holly Blalock to look into her crystal ball and share with us what she sees being the big new thing in interior design this year. Holly is the vice president of merchandis-ing and marketing for CR Laine Furniture, one of my absolute favorite furniture makers, and she has an eye for fresh, new fashion for the home. Here’s what Holly’s lovin’ for 2016:

A room fi lled with ‘cattitude’

I have always been a big fan of adding animal prints to the mix of fab-rics in your decor. I like how this touch of the wild shakes things up a bit and offers us an interesting way to add patterns, like dots and stripes, to the story on a bed or sofa.

After watching models clad in animal prints saunter down the cat-walk at all the big fall and spring fashion shows, Holly predicts exotic big cat prints will be making their way into home interiors. This year, Holly

says, “There’s no stop-ping the magnetism of the powerful leopard as king of the pattern jungle.”

CR Laine is unleash-ing this Elle chair as part of its Tobi Fairley for CR Laine collection this year. The chic brass arms are wrapped in Cattitude Onyx fabric, which is so soft, Holly says you won’t be able to keep your paws off.

In this room scene, created by CR Laine, the designers boldly mixed traditional and modern. The sofa, with its shaped back and skirt, along with the floral wallpaper, lean into traditional, but the addition of a contem-porary piece of art and the brass arms of the

animal-print covered chair keep the room from being one-dimensional.

Holly says, “This col-lected look is not only appealing to the eye, it is the best way to manage your design budget. Instead of buying the matching pieces in a set all at one time, you can buy complimentary (not matching) pieces over time.”

Spaces bathed in blueEvery year, Pantone

picks the color of the year. For 2016, they parted with tradition and picked two colors of the year. I’m thrilled to share that Serenity, a pale shade of blue, was one.

Hip, hip, hooray for blue, my lifelong color crush!

There is a lot we dis-agree on as Americans, Holly says, but deco-rating our homes with various shades of blue is something that brings us all together. As a lifelong fan of blue, I whole-heartedly agree. Holly is predicting that blue will

come on even stronger in the coming year. In the room scene above, from CR Laine, the designers have mixed a variety of shades together, from the quiet tones in the sofa to the nearly black, inky shade of blue in the swivel chair.

pick? Rose Quartz, a soft and powdery pink. When CR Laine introduced a

similar blush color and mixed it up with greens and creamy whites for their fall collection, I fell in love.

Many of us were over the moon about pink when we were little girls. And even though we outgrew our bubblegum pink rooms, a part of our hearts never let go. That's why I'm so crazy about this soft blush pink: It allows us to add this familiar favorite back

into our lives once again, but in a sophisticated, stylish way.

A bit of whimsyWhen I decorate a

space, I like to add one or two surprises that make people smile, a bit of whimsy that leads to delight. After all, life is just better when you're smiling, isn't it? When I spotted this fabric that depicts internationally renowned American

artist Hunt Slonem's bunnies, I was smiling ear to ear. CR Laine has used it to cover a swivel chair. Love!
