Last weekend, I got the Christmas tree up and decorated and my daugh-ter said to me “Mommy, the

house is not ready for Christ-mas until we get some poinset-tias.” Poinsettias are truly a

symbol of the hol-iday season. Red poinsettias are most commonly sold at the garden centers and gro-cery stores, and if you’re lucky, you may fi nd a pink one.

But did you know there are many different colors of poinsettias available, including white, marbled, orange, yellow, salmon, burgun-dy and speckled? Now, you may ask, where can I get some of these unusual colors of poinset-tias? The University of Florida’s Environmental Horticulture Club annual Plant Sale fund-raiser, of course!

doll that my mother had that I really have little information on. Her eyes are “broken” and I need someone to repair them. I contacted Virginia Rose

of the Doll Collector’s organiza-tion here in Ocala, and will paste her reply in this email.

I am hoping you can connect

me with someone who can repair this doll for me. Ms. Rose mentioned Ralph Brown from Mount Dora, but, as you can see, she did not have contact info. Here is the reply I received from Ms. Rose:

“Here is what I have found. The 46 represents the size 46 cm or 18 inches. The turtle in the diamond means that the head, and maybe the whole doll, was made in Germany from 1889 to 1925 by Rheinische Gummi & Celluloid Fabrik Co. Turtle brand products were imported into the U.S. by Bawo & Dotter, Borgfeldt, Averill Mfg, Adam Bernhard and others. The doll is celluloid. It appears from the pictures that the rocker stop for the eyes is damaged. This is some-times just a cork to keep the eyes from going too far down. The man in Mount Dora that we have used in the past is Ralph Brown and we are looking for his number. I will forward it as soon as we fi nd it. He will be at the doll show in Leesburg the fi rst Saturday in February, but you can

call him and see about bringing the doll to him sooner.”

dish was made in China. The time of production is

likely close to 100 years ago. They were produced in large quantities for export to America and various countries. It still has lots of pretty left, but very little dollar value due to the damage.

MDCXV, written in Latin. The title is “The Life of John the Baptist.” It is about 3 inches thick, 8 inches by 12. It has a leather cover, the pages are heavy and appear to be some kind of fabric. The interior pages are very solid, but stained. The cover is in poor condition, as is the fi rst

page. Do you have any ideas where I can get an appraisal on this book? The print is in black and red script.

The life of a poinsettia plant can be prolonged by paying attention to its care. Protect the poinsettia plant from too much draft and temperatures below 50 degrees. Never fertilize poinsettias while in bloom. Q: I have recently heard about new toilet seats

that have built-in deodor-izing systems. I’m my own home handyman, and I

think this would be a great do-it-your-self project for me. Do these toilet seats require any special installation

instructions, and how do they work?

A: New-style toilet seats with built-in deodor-

izing systems I have worked with install pretty much like any standard toilet seat. They also come in elongated or round-front sizes to fi t most toilet bowls. Make sure you get the correct size to fi t your toilet bowl.

The built-in deodorizing system is battery-operated and automatically acti-

vates when the user sits on the seat. Once activated, a small fan draws the odors from the toilet bowl into the seat’s carbon fi lter chamber. Then the fi ltered air passes over a special scent pack and the treated air goes back into the room. Batteries, fi lters and scent packs can be easily changed when needed.

Also, the deodorizing seats I have seen feature a

built-in nightlight, along with slow-closing seat technology. So when you add everything up, installing a new deodoriz-ing toilet seat can really make a lot of scents!

I was checking my cal-endar, and I just could not believe that Christ-mas is almost here

again. Days are fi lled with working and shop-ping and preparing for the holidays. Once again it’s time to give you some ideas on the new products that I have been research-ing for the handyman or woman on your shopping list.

While using my wheel-barrow on a hilly terrain, I was wondering why I had to balance such a heavy load on just one wheel. One mistake and the whole load would spill onto the yard, and I would have to start all over.

I was wondering, wouldn’t two wheels be better than one for balancing the load? I looked and found the AeroCart by WORX, a wheelbarrow with two wheels for balancing the load.

The AeroCart also serves as a dolly or handcart for moving

heavy loads. Included is a bag holder accessory to steady bags of grass, leaves and other yard

debris and a wraparound mesh sling that aids in landscape jobs, such as moving boulders or heavy planter pots.

The cart also has drop-down extension arms that can be used to move logs and a cinch strap, sling and steel rings are provided for moving large plants or containers. Rockwell’s BenchJaws is a hands-free shop accessory vise designed to

securely hold in place any DIY work piece that would normally require a second set of hands to hold. Trying to hold a large unbalanced piece of work while tightening a vise is sometimes impossible and is often dangerous, but not so with Rockwell’s BenchJaw.

When it comes to decorating your fi replace mantel for the holidays,

it seems like people have two perspectives. Some see this long piece of

wood as a stage for their mas-terpiece. But to oth-ers, it seems more like a gangplank because decorating this key

focal point feels intimidat-ing.

Let me just underscore that decorating should never be stressful. Just the opposite! So to alleviate any mantel mania you may feel, or if you’d like some new tips and

techniques for creating a fresh holiday look, here are the three simple steps for success we follow when we build seasonal displays on our mantels and chandeliers.STEP 1: PICK THE PIECES YOU WANT TO FEATURE: Every year when I pull out my boxes of holiday decor, I feel like I’m unearthing buried treasure. The boxes are packed with my favorite pieces, some of which I’ve used in my holiday decorating for years, others are new additions. Before you dress your mantel, pull out all the items you might want to use in your display, including greenery, ribbons, ornaments and seasonal and year-round accents.

Lay all the ingredients out before you so you can

see what you have. As you do, assess your stockpile. Are there accents you no longer love, or that are starting to look dated or tired? If so, let them go. You only want to surround yourself with the things you love.

Is there anything new you’ll need to freshen up your collection? New greens ? A fun new focal point like an angel, reindeer or Christmas tree? If so, now you have an excuse to go shopping! STEP 2: DECIDE ON A THEME: Your mantel and chande-lier need to communicate one lovely, focused look, not be a hodgepodge of lots of different themes. Bruce, a movie buff and the head of Nell Hill’s Briarcliff’s visual display team, says to think of your home like a movie set.

Everything in a display needs to be true to that movie. If you pull in pieces that don’t fi t your theme, it’s like dressing your set for two very different fi lms. It doesn’t work.

I am crazy about birds and natural greens, so I like to pull together displays that look like they

are a snapshot from nature. Right now, just about every holiday look is in, from glamorous and regal to whimsical and fun. So the sky is the limit when you pick the theme that works best for you.

Don’t forget to dress up one of two chandeliers in your home, whether in the

entry, dining room or kitchen, because they give you tons of bang for the buck. A gorgeous fi xture pushes the entire room up on the drama scale and doesn’t take that long to do.STEP 3: LAYER IT UP: Everyone has her own LQ (lushness quotient). Some of us like displays that feature layers upon layers of decor. Others of us prefer to decorate with just a few powerful objects that make a strong statement in their simplicity. What is your LQ? Bring that to life through the layers on your mantel and light fi xtures.
