1 INTRODUCTION

A survey was completed on water bores within a 30 km radius of the Beverley Four Mile Mine Lease Application area in the Frome Basin. The bores were surveyed to:

- Establish who the 3rd party users of the groundwater are;

- For what purposes the groundwater is used for;

- To get a regional view of groundwater quality and

- See which of these (if any) are potentially completed in the same formation as the proposed mining

zone at Beverley Four Mile.

2 METHOD

Bore data was downloaded data from the South Australian Government Department of Water land and Biodiversity Conservation (DWLBC) Drillhole Enquiry System database

1. The database was queried for all

water bores within 30 km of the Beverley Four Mile East orebody, located within the sedimentary Frome Basin. Bores in the Northern Flinders Ranges were excluded from this survey since, these bores are located up gradient from the Beverley Four Mile Mine Lease, and hence there is no potential for adverse impacts on these bores. As part of the survey, the station owners/managers from Moolawatana, Arkaroola and Wooltana were consulted on:

- Status of each recorded bore in the prescribed area

- Current use and

- Bore depths from their records.

Bore status was assigned as follows:

- A bore is considered active if it is currently or can be used to pump water

- Not in use if the bore exists but cannot be used (i.e. bore is dry, or damaged) and

- Does not exist if it has collapsed or there are no longer traces of it (washed away in floods.

Each active bore site was visited to collect water samples. Samples were analysed at the Beverley onsite lab for Electrical Conductivity (EC, an indicator of salinity or total dissolved solids), pH, sulphate concentration and chloride concentration. Standing water level was measured wherever possible and photographs were also taken at each site where possible. Water samples were taken from as close to the source as possible which in most cases was a pipe running into the water tank directly from the bore.

3 RESULTS

The results of the survey are presented in Table 1. Of the 57 bores recorded in the DES database,

- 13 no longer exist

- 14 are not in use, and in many cases are in a state of disrepair

- 8 are associated with the Beverley Mine

- 22 are in use by third party users.

Bore Status is presented in Figure 1. The bores in use are used solely for stock watering by station managers/owners with the exception of the Camp 3 Bore which is jointly used for stock water and by Heathgate Resources for the purpose of road Maintenance on EPIC Row and one bore for domestic purposes at the Wooltana homestead. The bore depths of the surveyed bores are shown in Figure 4. Data was obtained from station owners records. All of the active bores were cased above 100 m with majority cased above 50 m. In this region, the Willawortina Formation has a thickness which generally exceeds 100 m, other than in the immediate Beverley Four Mile area where it is thinner, elevated, and unsaturated. All active bores are in areas with thick Willawortina Formation, indicating that all of the active bores in this area, used by third parties, access the Willawortina Formation aquifer. The deeper Namba and Eyre formations start below 100 m and the GAB at over 300 m. Thus there are no active third party bores within the Namba, Eyre or GAB Formations. Salinity data is presented on Figure 2. Salinity was calculated from electrical conductivity data. This data shows that salinity is lower in the south and west closer to the range front and increases to the north and east. It is likely that the stream floodout of the Paralana Creek, in the south west of the study area, is a recharge area for the Willawortina Formation, which results in the observed lower salinity in this area. Figure 3 presents Standing Water Level (SWL) data. It can be seen that the SWL (in mAHD) drops with distance from the range front toward the regional discharge zone of Lake Frome. At many sites, SWL was not able to be measured due to the pumping methods (i.e. windmills and surface pumps seal off the bore head thus the depth to water probe is not able to be used).

4 CONCLUSION

A field survey was undertaken of all the water bores within the sedimentary Frome embayment within 30 km of the Beverley Four Mile East orebody recorded in the South Australian Government DWLBC Drillhole Enquiry system database. This survey showed that, of the 57 bores recorded in the database, 22 bores are in use by third party groundwater users for stock and domestic use. The remainders are either non-existent, in disrepair, or are used by the Beverly Mine. All third party bores access the Willawortina Formation aquifer. Salinity ranges from 1500 mg/L to 10,000 mg/L. Salinity increases with distance away from recharge areas at the Flinders Ranges range front and at stream flood outs. Similarly, aquifer pressure decreases with distance from recharge areas towards the regional groundwater discharge zone of Lake Frome The closest third party well to the Four Mile East orezone is Pepegoona Bore, this well is located approximately 15 km east of the proposed mining zone.
