Better Education Guide

Welcome...to the Spring 2013 issue of Better Education. We understand how difficult it can be to decide on your child’s next educational step – whether they’re starting nursery, school, or university – but this guide is designed to help you through. The listings pages feature institutions of all levels situated across the UAE – and as you can see, the options are numerous. We’ve got everything from pre-school to higher education covered, so the process is simpler than ever.

Parents will also find some key reading: the parent of a child with Asperger Syndrome shares her experience in finding quality education for him.

If you’re debating whether to enroll your lit tle one in a nursery, we’ve quizzed an expert on the benefits of doing so. It ’s essential reading, and thought-provoking stuff.

How This Guide WorksWhatever level of education you’re looking into, you’ll know by now that choosing an institution is no small feat – which is why this guide is the perfect place to start. Our jam-packed listings pages are broken down by the emirate they’re located in and then alphabetically. Plus, each entry has a summary to help you get a feel for the place in question. Nice and simple...

Better Education Guide

The Main Courses

What are the main features of the IB Curriculum? It teaches deeper meaning and understanding and requires students to think critically, evaluate and question. The focus is on the students to become responsible, global citizens with the skills and attitudes that will make the world a better place. It is academically challenging and globally relevant.

What are its main objectives in terms of nurturing students? The curriculum puts students at the heart of the focus, and emphasis is placed on developing specific attributes classed as the ‘Learner Profile’. These include becoming inquirers, communicative, principled, etc… There are ten attributes in all, which are essential in becoming active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that we all have differences and can live together.

Are the students given much choice in terms of the subjects they can study? In the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme the school sets the content of the curriculum. However, in the Diploma, students choose three subjects at Higher level and three at Standard level, which reflect their needs for university, abilities or preference.

What, in terms of their character, are successful students of the curriculum like?A successful IB student is one who shows evidence of the Learner profile in everything they do – not just within the classroom. They are respectful of others and are able to look at situations critically and accept others’ points of view. They have an awareness of the world around them and make a difference to that world in a positive way.

Is the IB Curriculum easy to adapt to if the student has been taught a different curriculum previously? Some students might find that some adjustments need to be made when transferring to an IB curriculum as they are required to think for themselves and the lessons are not just content-based but may involve skills, knowledge of concepts and self-directed learning. Students sometimes need to adapt to this ‘inquiry’ approach to learning, but all can adapt; once they have, they are able to develop their full potential for learning.

How is the IB Curriculum viewed by universities?Extremely positively. The Diploma prepares students very well for university as it involves self-motivation and equips them with the study skills they will need. IB Diploma students can present their work, talk objectively about subjects, and know how to write lengthy essays as the Extended Essay (a requirement of the IB Diploma) is a mini dissertation. It is much easier for universities to accept students who have those skills already, rather than having to teach them.

The IB, American and English National Curriculums are among Dubai’s most popular schooling options, but which to choose? Here, educators give us the low-down...

Essentials

What are the main features of the English National Curriculum? We deliver the English National Curriculum to build on students’ strengths, interests and experiences and develop their confidence to work independently and collaboratively. The structure of the curriculum equips them with literacy, numeracy and ICT, whilst promoting an enquiring mind and capacity to think rationally.

What are its main objectives in terms of nurturing students? It aims to promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and, in particular, develop principles for distinguishing between right and wrong. It develops their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of different beliefs and cultures, and how these can influence individuals and society. It aims to pass on enduring values, and help students to be responsible and caring citizens capable of contributing to the development of society.

Are the students given much choice in terms of the subjects they can study? All students study a core range which develops their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. They also

study history, geography, a foreign language, science, drama, art, music and PE. When students enter Year Ten, they can opt to drop some subjects and add additional ones. In Years 12 and 13, we offer the IB Diploma Programme instead of A-Levels. We do this because we see it as an extension of the best elements of the English National Curriculum.

What, in terms of their character, are successful students of the curriculum like? They are well-rounded individuals. They have a good understanding of factual information, and they also have the skills to apply their knowledge. Their capacity to use the English language to explore ideas and articulate their thinking is excellent. We take the aims of the curriculum a step further, by using our High Performance Learning programme, which aims to get every student to perform at their best, by providing them with challenging opportunities. The English National Curriculum seeks to promote independent thought and high levels of engagement with challenging material, so we feel that our own focus on HPL blends with those aims.

Is the English National Curriculum easy to adapt to if the student has been taught a different curriculum previously? They should not struggle. Providing they possess basic English language skills, they should be sufficiently engaged by the variety in the curriculum to be successful. Naturally, we have found that the earlier a child comes to the British system, the easier it is for them to make the transition. However, we do have many older children that have successfully transferred.

How is the English National Curriculum viewed by universities?Very well. At the British International School, we think that the IB Diploma Programme prepares students for university in a much better way than the A-Level course; many of our students find the first year of university relatively easy as the IB has prepared them for independent study.

Essentials

What are the main features of the American Curriculum? Here people use the term ‘American curriculum’ but, in all honesty, each state in the US has a different curriculum, so there is no one single American curriculum. A pure American curriculum runs from age five (Kindergarten) to Grade 12. Here, it begins with Pre-Kindergarten for three-year-olds, KG1 for four-year-olds and KG2 for five-year-olds, and then from Grade One to Grade 12. Our school runs according to the US common core standards for English Language Arts and Math, and applies the California standards for Social Studies and Michigan standards for Science.

What are its main objectives in terms of nurturing students? It is very nurturing. We don’t make many demands on students to memorise information. We create small groups and differentiate instruction. Thanks to that system, pupils get valuable small-group and individual time with teachers. From Pre-Kindergarten to Grade Two, each class also benefits from having a teacher and teaching assistant present.

Are the students given much choice in terms of the subjects they can study? From Grade Seven to 12 there are a large variety of choices available to students. Everyone takes Math, Science and English Language Arts, but there are choices within that. For example, within English Language Arts, we teach Women in Literature, Early American Literature or Contemporary Literature. We also have Fine Arts, Music and Physical Education programmes and a great range of extra-curricular activities.

What, in terms of their character, are successful students of the curriculum like? Successful students in our school have strong leadership skills. Every month we focus on character traits, in addition to leadership and innovation, which we work to develop within our students. This month, for example, is fairness. Others include responsibility, global citizenship and creativity. This starts in Pre-Kindergarten and continues until students graduate.

Is the American Curriculum easy to adapt to if the student has been taught a different curriculum previously?Students coming to us from the English National Curriculum may feel they are dropping a school grade, because someone in Year Six in the British system will enter our school at Grade Five. But these pupils are not repeating any content. In the UAE many schools claim to use the American Curriculum but only a very few are accredited, so some students coming from a school that they think is American may have some adjustments to make - our teachers will help them catch up.

How is the American Curriculum viewed by universities?Once you have an American high school diploma from our school you are qualified to enter university in any country in the world – including the UK, Canada, US, Russia and China – grades dependent. In addition, we like to develop well-rounded students, so we have very strong programmes for sport and the arts.

Choosing when or whether to send your child to nursery is a tough decision all parents must take. To help, we sought the advice of Professor Pat Preedy, Director of Little GEMS International and an expert on early child education

Should they stay or should they go?

A lot of Dubai nurseries take children at a very young age – some under one year old. Is there any benefit to someone so young being at nursery? There are enormous benefits to children attending a quality pre-school. They are able to develop independence and confidence so that they are ready for the start of school. Children learn a great deal from each other and being able to play with others provides opportunities for social play, turn-taking and being able to resolve conflicts and differences.

For parents thinking of keeping their children at home, what would the child potentially miss out on by not attending nursery? As well as missing out on opportunities to mix and learn from other children, the child misses out on access to a thorough and planned curriculum covering all areas of early childhood development: communication, language and literacy, physical development, mathematics, expressive arts and design, digital learning and understanding the world. Children in quality pre-schools have an all-round head start – personally, socially, emotionally, physically and academically. Engaging with and supporting your child at home and providing him or her with an opportunity to attend a quality pre-school that combines education and care, is a winning combination.

Better Education Guide

Dubai’s a very multicultural city. What would you say to parents concerned about their child attending a nursery where so many languages are spoken?Attending a pre-school where children speak a variety of languages is actually an enormous advantage. The young baby makes every sound in the human language. As he or she hears language many of these sounds are filtered out. Introducing children to a range of languages from an early age enables them to build the foundations to become multi-lingual. Interacting with children from a variety of culture enables children to truly become global citizens. Of course, the child needs an excellent role model for language and where the language of instruction is English, we need to ensure that grammar and pronunciation are of a high standard.

What is the benefit of learning languages at such a young age?Information communication technology, travel and the way that we now work means that we need to be able to communicate effectively. Young children have a built- in capacity to learn language and pre-school is the best time to build upon these abilities. We want our children to be confident communicators with a positive attitude to learning a range of different languages.

What questions should a parent ask of a prospective nursery before sending their child there? It is important to check that the pre-school has high standards with regard to health, safety and hygiene. Parents should ask how the pre-school ensures that children are kept safe and secure. Do they have daily risk assessments? Is there a security system? What happens if my child is unwell? How do you ensure that my child is collected by the correct person?

Find out about who your child’s key person/teacher will be, staff training and how staff will plan for and assess your child. It is important to find out about ways the pre-school will

communicate with you and inform you of your child’s all round development and progress.

When you visit the pre-school, observe the interactions with the staff and children. Are the children active and busy supported by the staff? Your feelings with regard to the warmth and care of the staff and the happiness of the children in the setting are extremely good indicators too.

How important is a structured curriculum at nursery level? As with any age group, it is extremely important to have an appropriate, planned curriculum and assessment framework. For young children it is important to plan learning experiences that enable them to learn actively, using all of their senses.

As I developed my research into neuro-development and explored what factors enhance children’s learning, it had become apparent that it was time for a new model of early childhood education – a model that

BE_Should they stay March'13.indd 9 3/7/13 11:26 AM

Page 12: Better Education_Mar'13

10

Essentialsup to a year’s head start over those who are exclusively cared for at home. What are your thoughts on that? There is no doubt that quality early childhood education has a positive effect on children’s all round development and can give all children a head start to learning and life. Parents, teachers and the children themselves then need to build upon this advantage.

What do you believe to be the optimum class size for a nursery, in terms of teachers versus pupils?I think we need to move away from the idea of formal classes/boxes. Young children need access to a range of learning areas including opportunities for digital learning, messy play and outdoor learning. The ideal environment is one in which young children have learning bases and the opportunity to move to a range of staff-supported learning opportunities.

There is a lot of debate in the UK at the moment about appropriate adult to child ratios and it is likely that the UK will change to one adult to four children up to 12 months; one adult to six children for two year olds and one adult to eight children for 3 year olds. Although we need reasonable and safe ratios, the important thing is to have quality, trained staff where each child can form secure attachments.

A lot of nurseries in Dubai have waiting lists. What advice would you have for parents who have to wait before sending their child to their nursery of choice? How can they help their development in that time?If your child is on a waiting list, see if there are other children in the same situation. You can then arrange play opportunities where children can socialise and play together.

Ensure that if your child has a nanny she encourages your child to speak and to be independent. My book ‘Ready, Steady, Go!’ gives parents ideas that they can do at home with their children to develop movement, language and thought.

‘Quality early childhood education can give all children a head start in life’

focuses on the first seven years of life, builds upon the work of educators, such as Maria Montessori, Reggio Emilia and the High Scope Programme and takes into consideration the needs of children and their families now and in the future.

The Lit tle Gems International (LGI) curriculum combines the UK Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with unique specially writ ten programmes based upon research into how young children learn and develop. Learning is multi-sensory to ensure it appeals to all learners. Through the use of SPARKLE (sensory, physical, auditory, real, kinaesthetic learning experiences) along with high quality resources, including information technology, children are able to gain independence whilst undertaking activities which help them to explore and learn at their own pace.

There have been past studies which suggest children whose experience of education begins as young as two are likely to have

Shine a lightRachel Hamilton details her experience since her son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, and encourages parents in the same situation to come out of the shadows...

As the mother of an eight-year-old boy with Asperger Syndrome, living in the UAE, I’ve had an education myself since my son’s diagnosis last year. According to the Dubai Autism Centre, around one in 100 children under the age of 18 have some level of autistic spectrum disorder, and at the Autism Around The World conference this month, Dr. Ayesha Abdullah, Managing Director of Dubai Healthcare City declared: “The UAE’s goal is the inclusion of autistic students within mainstream schooling, following a history of segregation”.

An admirable goal, but in a country where places in popular schools are scarce and waiting lists are long, it ’s not easy for any child to get into their preferred choice of school, let alone a child who might need extra facilities and specially trained staff. This can be a shock to families arriving from countries like the UK, where the education rights of children with learning disabilities are so entrenched that a UK friend recently described Asperger Syndrome as an ‘advantage’ in the battle for school places as it often means a higher ranking on admission criteria lists.

In contrast, I’ve heard it claimed that several of Dubai’s most popular schools automatically reject applicants with an autism diagnosis. Curious, I called these schools and asked whether they would consider taking my son if I applied in the future. Although none offer the positive

Better Education Guide

better understand the challenges they face day to day.

And to those struggling to find a place for their child, don’t give up hope. Help is out there.

The problem is the conspiracy of silence, with schools even more reluctant than parents to discuss autism. When I told my son’s school I was writing this piece and intended to describe how fantastic they’d been, they had reservations about being named. I can only assume this is because being a great environment for autistic children isn’t something a school would want to advertise. Which tells me we need to shine that light ever brighter.

discrimination shown in the British system, all claimed that, provided he passed their entrance exam, having Asperger Syndrome would be no barrier to entry for him or any other child. One school head of admissions explained, “We’re a community, and as such, we celebrate diversity.” What she did add, however, was that it helps to be honest about any diagnosis from the start. Not only because it usually entitles your child to extra time on the entrance exams, but also because, as any parent of an autistic child knows, deception is not one of their strengths. An open approach allows both students and parents to be more relaxed when talking to staff in a potential new school. Children are more likely to shine when they are allowed to be themselves.

In her speech, Dr. Ayesha Abdullah highlighted the need to “shine a light” on autism spectrum disorders in the UAE. Too many parents keep their child’s diagnosis quiet for fear of the response they, and their child, may get from ignorant friends and acquaintances. But it ’s a vicious circle. Ignorance can only be defeated by knowledge, and it is only by generating more awareness about the condition that we’ll help society to be more accepting of our children.

I have to confess, I was one of those parents who protested when the school pushed for my son to be tested. I thought labelling him would limit his choices and opportunities. But I was wrong. I underestimated the relief it would bring my boy – who, when he was aged just four, complained sadly that “nobody understands me” – to discover the world is full of kids just like him. Kids who are quirky, kids who are special, and best of all, kids who have learnt to be proud of the things that make them different.

‘Children are more likely to shine when they are allowed to be themselves’

Another reason I resisted testing was because I was afraid the results might be used to ask us to leave the school. Again, I couldn’t have been more wrong. The head of the junior school wrote us a wonderful letter, praising our son’s “unique learning style” and promising to work closely with us to “ensure his talents are properly recognised and developed”, and over the past year the school has been true to their word. They have created a tailor-made education plan, and my son’s Year Four teacher is an incredible, talented woman – the kind of teacher he and the other children in his class will remember forever.

So, to anyone in the situation we were in last year, wondering whether to get your child tested, I say do it. The diagnosis won’t change anything about your child, but it will help them and everyone involved in their life to

‘The focus is on providing a broad, flexible and practical education’

reflective project; and an approved career-related study.

This new qualification will become popular in Dubai as it extends the scope of provision for these students who learn in different ways and do not want the ‘traditional’ route to further education. They want more experiential learning in a real world context where they can extend themselves and be successful in areas in which they are interested.

Schools are able to choose the vocational courses they offer. At the moment Greenfield Community School (GCS) offers Business (which students had requested) and are looking into offering Sports Science as another option. These are both very relevant, locally and internationally. However, being in Dubai, Hospitality and Management would be a course that I am sure would be very popular for obvious reasons and certainly with the huge diversity of opportunities for work experience (a requirement of the course), the options for the vocational component of the course are limitless. The IBCC can be adapted to suit specific needs and yet at the same time, provide for a breadth of alternative pathways suitable for a changing market.

For our students, the IBCC has opened new possibilities and has been extremely successful in allowing them to achieve personal best in many domains. Recently a student with limited English language skills returned from work experience at a well-known ‘megastore’ where he was praised for his sales ability and interaction with customers. His self-esteem increased tremendously and his new confidence made a real difference to his learning…in fact, he was offered a full–time position with the company! I look forward to following the progress of our first graduates as they move into the job market or choose further education at the end of this academic year.

The International Baccalaureate Career Certificate (IBCC) is a qualification that was developed to meet the rising global demand for a framework that provides career-related studies with the academic rigour of an International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. The focus is on providing a broad, flexible education that gives students knowledge, practical skills, intellectual engagement and international mindedness to succeed both in higher education and the global workplace. The IBCC caters for students who learn in different ways and prefer a practical approach and real world context for their learning.

The Programme, taught in the last two years of high school, is built around three interconnected elements: at least two Diploma Programme courses; an IBCC core that includes approaches to learning, community and service, language development and a

Sophie Morling’s son Teddy attends Repton Dubai (page 100)

“On speaking to the staff they seemed intelligent, professional and I felt they genuinely cared about their students. Facilities are fantastic, particularly in the nursery - they have so much for under-5s, it is incredible. Even the 3-4s are given proper Arabic, PE and music lessons. They seem to understand how to bring out the best in each child: the teachers are fantastic”

Mieke Quarrie sends her two sons to the Dubai International Academy (p74)“We chose this school because it ’s international, so we think it would be easier for them to adapt, should we move to another country. It also follows the IB programme, which we like because it ’s designed to make the child more independent. The school has integrated Dutch language lessons, which is a big bonus as I’m Dutch. And we travel to school by bicycle, as it ’s very close to home.”

It wasn’t easy to get our children into the school – there is a waiting list and places can often be at a premium, particularly in the primary school – but perseverance paid off. The school runs a lively range of extra-curricular and after-school activities and its drama department especially is very strong and puts on some excellent productions.”
