Organ Loan Update

What a great job the congregation has done of supporting this campaign! As of April 25, 2013 we have collected $20,522.35. The remaining balance on the organ loan is $6,628.29. We have had over 75 individual gifts. We have a beautiful instrument that is valued at over $500,000.00 that will be here for generations to come. Thank you to all who have given to reduce this debt. It is our hope that we would continue to receive donations so this debt can be completely paid off.

Music Notes

Bethesda warmly welcomes Eleanor and Ervin Hamme. The Hammes transferred from Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton, VA where they were active in the choir, various church committees, and the Session.

Ervin and Eleanor are retired Middle School teachers. Ervin was a band director for 41 years and Eleanor taught Home Economics for 17 years.

They love music, adding their voices recently during the Easter Messiah. When not singing, Ervin enjoys woodworking and Eleanor likes sewing and decorative painting.

Bethesda is blessed to have these talented new members!

Bethesda’s 225th Anniversary Celebration1788 - 2013

AN EARLY MINISTER (This biographical sketch appeared in the 1953 Homecoming bulletin with Rev. Jack W. Ewart as Bethesdaʼs current minister.)

The Rev. John McIntyre (1760-1863), a native of Scotland, lived near Blueʼs Bridge on Drowning Creek, on a farm now known as Buchanʼs farm. Foote in his Sketches of North Carolina says of Mr. McIntyre he was “a subject of the revival of 1802, he devoted himself to the ministry and at the age of forty-four years commenced his Latin grammar with Mr. McMillan (at Solemn Grove). With prayer and patience he persevered in his course until he passed, on examination, in his Horace and Greek Testament to the Satisfaction of Orange Presbytery from whom he received license to preach. God crowned his patience and perseverance with success.” Mr. McIntyre served Bethesda from 1811 until 1821. His entire ministerial life was spent within the bounds of Fayetteville Presbytery. He lived to the age of one hundred and three years and was an active and zealous minister until his last days.

The Rev. Evander McNair, D.D. (1811-1885) came to Bethesda, his first pastorate in 1832 and served until 1835, and again 1882-1885. His ministerial life covered more than half a century, thirty-one years in his native State and twenty two years in the States of Texas, Alabama and Arkansas. During the war between the States, he was the first minister commissioned Chaplain by Jefferson Davis. In 1882, Mr. Mc Nair returned to North Carolina. A few days before his death, he preached his last sermon at Bethesda, the place of his first ministry. Probably no minister of Fayetteville Presbytery has been more greatly and widely loved than Dr. McNair. This is evidenced by the memorial addresses on his life and character before Fayetteville Presbytery, May 1886. “Tall, comely, of commanding presence, straight as an arrow, venerable, you felt like baring your head in due and profound respect.
