Bottom: AIPAC HIGH SCHOOL SUMMIT - Rabbi Yehuda Oratz accompanied the Beth Tfiloh student delegation to a 3-day summit in Washington, D.C. to provide training in lobbying and political activism in support of Israel.

This fall, Beth Tfiloh continued its long standing tradition of supporting Israel through a volunteer mission on an IDF base, and our students’ participation in the AIPAC High School Summit.

Mission participants worked on an officer training base in Mitzpe Ramon, restocking warehouses and reconditioning armoured personnel carriers and communications equipment used in Operation Protective Edge this past summer. June Karlin said she “loved talking to the soldiers,” many of whom were her grandchildren’s age. Robert Cohen enjoyed power washing military equipment. “I had a blast meeting people–they thanked us for coming and I thanked them for what they do for Israel.” Ben Sigman said “I give money but this way I was able to give of myself.” Eve Kresin Steinberg used her BT day school Hebrew skills to serve as translator for the group. “We got much more than we expected–seeing special events in the lives of the soldiers.” Eve was joined by her daughter, Rachel Steinberg Warschawski. The trip was dedicated in memory of Dr. Steven Steinberg, who participated in a similar mission in 2009.

and is the brother of Ryan and Debra Barron. He is the grandson of Linda Barron and Gloria Goldman. His hobbies include playing and watching sports, board games, card games, electronics, and being with friends. For his Mitzvah Project, Steven is volunteering at Arden Courts of Pikesville spending time with residents and helping with Shabbat services.

Our BT CARES Social Action program this year is having a wonderful impact on the community. We have been to Helping Up Mission, Baltimore Station, Weinberg Park; continue to give hundreds of lunches to Hannah More Shelter; collected hundreds of school supplies for Pimlico Elementary/Middle School; collected over 200 socks for Healthcare for the Homeless; made casseroles to feed 85 people for Hannah More Shelter; delivered home-cooked kugels to Hannah More; exceeded our goal at the Blood Drive of 65 donors; and most recently, collected and donated more than 30 boxes of clothing and winter accessories to the Wolfe Street Academy.

We thank our many volunteers for everything they have done to help with these very important initiatives. Already this year, we have truly showed how much BT Cares!

Our upcoming projects include: a one-day clothing drive on December 7 to benefit Hannah More, Helping Up Mission, Beans & Bread, and Paul’s Place; a glove collection for Community Mitzvah Day; being a mitzvah room partner during Community Mitzvah Day- making stress balls for Levindale patients with dementia; BT Puppeteers Chanukah performances at nearby nursing homes; a toy drive to benefit the Jewish Caring Network and Hackerman Patz House; and a DVD collection for the children at Hannah More.

Rabbi Sacks Connects with Juniors and Seniors Hannah C. ‘16

Last month, eleventh and twelfth grade students enjoyed a wonderful opportunity as they welcomed Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of

Great Britain and the Commonwealth, to the Beth Tfiloh community. After delivering a heartfelt D’var Torah to the entire High School, Rabbi Sacks met with the upperclassmen in order to discuss insightful questions posed by the students. The questions ranged from the existence of G-d to laws of kashrut and tefillin.

The students’ questions were deep and thought-provoking, and Rabbi Sacks responded to each with a meaningful answer. Andrew S. ’16 commented that he “really enjoyed the session with Rabbi Sacks because he was engaging and answered our questions thoroughly.” Not only did Rabbi Sacks keep students

attentive to the discussion, but he also helped students understand his answers through relatable examples. According to Olivia M. ’15, Rabbi Sacks also “added humor to his answers, which kept everyone interested”. Throughout the session, the students learned a lot and gained insight from one of the great Jewish leaders of their time.

A Championship Season for Cross Country and Girls Tennis

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Cross Country team on their first winning season in recent history! The team finished the season with a record of 10 wins and 7 losses, and finished 6th out of 14 teams at the MIAA “B” Conference Championship, where Josh R. ’18 clocked in at 17:38, and Liam L. ’17, at 17:59.

After finishing the regular season with a 4-3 record in the IAAM “B” Conference, the Girls Varsity Tennis team soared into the 2014 tennis championships, where they earned second place overall in the “B” Conference and the number one doubles team, Aly C. ’15 and Jessica S. ’17, also won gold in their individual tournament.

Rabbi Jonathan Gross packed duffel bags with helmets, uniforms, and other protective gear. “This was a very meaningful experience. I hope that Beth Tfiloh can lead similar missions on a regular basis to give more people this opportunity to show support.”

The group also brought gloves, socks, wool hats, BT kippot, and candy to give to the soldiers as gifts.

Our AIPAC High School Summit delegates, led by Rabbi Yehuda Oratz, met with staffers from the offices of Cong. John Sarbanes (D-MD), Cong. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Chair of the House Republican Conference, and Cong. Glenn Thompson (R-PA). They discussed providing more aid to Israel to support the Iron Dome; the threat ISIS poses; and the importance of the US/Israel strategic partnership. When Rod and Cheryl King decided to leave Las Vegas for the East Coast in 2009, a friend in real estate recommended Baltimore. While researching the Baltimore Jewish community, Rod discovered Beth Tfiloh – a school that spans PreSchool through High School and shul, all in one! They were sold on BT…and they still are today.

“BT plays a central role in our family,” says Cheryl, who currently serves as the Vice President of Fundraising for the School’s Parent Association. “We are involved in the School and shul and find that this participation meets our spiritual and educational needs as well as enables us to be part of a unique community.”

So when they were approached to participate in Beth Tfiloh’s Chazak Campaign, they saw it as an opportunity to take that involvement a step further and give back both to the organization and the community that gives so much to their family. “We see our contribution to the Chazak Campaign as an investment in the future,” says Rod, “not just in BT, but also in our family, other families and the community as a whole. It’s a way to ensure and maintain Jewish values and traditions for future generations…it guarantees the future of an

institution which values Judaism and the quest for knowledge for all ages.”

Rod and Cheryl asked their children, Jason ’20 and Ryan ’24, to be a part of their Chazak Campaign involvement. “We shared our decision to make a gift with our children because we believe it’s essential they witness the moral obligation of giving back for the greater good of the community,” explains Cheryl. “We hope to inspire them to do the same as they develop into productive members of the community and society.”

The boys were very excited to participate in the Chazak Campaign because “BT is part of their daily lives and they consider it like a second home,” says Cheryl.

And what was the boys’ contribution? “We went through the list of naming opportunity options with the boys and they decided on the Lower School flagpole. It has meaning to us as Rod was a Major in the Army Reserves, serving as a doctor in Iraq in 2005,” explains Cheryl.

BT Athletic Hall of Fame Induction 2014

Coach Jeff Clarke and Coach Sonya Howell agree that “Aaron and Stacy Hollander are two of the greatest basketball players and two of the best athletes in BT history! Both led their basketball teams to league championships by being unselfish and talented leaders.” During their time at Beth Tfiloh, Aaron played soccer, basketball, baseball, and ran one year of track and field. Stacy played soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and softball. Throughout the years, they have had some memorable athletic moments. Aaron most vividly remembers winning the conference basketball championship against Friends School in 2000. He mentions that one of the benefits of being on the team was learning time management…and also missing lots of last period classes to get out early for games. Stacy still revels in the fact that the year she played in the Weiner Tournament as a freshman was the first year that the BT girls had ever won the tournament. She also remembers winning her division as a junior during the first championship for the BT Girls’ Varsity Basketball team.

For both Aaron and Stacy, BT athletics was (and still is) a family affair. They both remember playing with or against—and always cheering for—their siblings. Aaron has played in three alumni games and in the last one, he says, “I got to play against my brother, J.B. Hollander ’04, which was a lot of fun—but he definitely scored on me!” Stacy fondly recounts one her first BT sports memories—watching her sister, Marlene Hollander ’97,

hurt her shoulder during a game only to come back into the game to shoot from half court at the buzzer and win the match. Beyond High School, athletics remains an important part of

their lives. Stacy still plays on a recreational team in New York City and says she loves playing in alumni games against Coach Howell’s teams.

Currently, Stacy lives in Teaneck, New Jersey with her husband Judah and her one and a half year old son, Harrison. She teaches

physical education to

grades K-8 and is also an athletic program coordinator at Ben Porat Yosef, a Jewish day school in New Jersey. After living in Arizona for five and a half years, Aaron has moved back to Pikesville. He currently spends his time developing his business, TimepieceRepair.com, his own watch repair company.

Aaron and Stacy were equally honored and excited to hear that they were chosen to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Reflecting on the fact that BT has had a tremendous impact on their lives by preparing them for success and providing them with life-long friends, Aaron and Stacy are happy that they will be able to share this special honor together.
