Temperatures & Weights1

You have accepted a short term work placement at the local childcare centre.

Your duties will include

• Monitoring children’s temperatures

• Recording children’s weights

• Working out mean and range temperatures.

Learning

In this task, you will be covering the areas detailed below.

Children and Young People’s Workforce:

• Basic understanding of how to take temperatures and record illnesses

Functional Skills Mathematics:

• Extract and interpret information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs

Task 1

Your first task is to help one of the staff record the temperatures of 4 sick children in the setting at the end of the day (3pm).

These were:

John C: 37.8%,

Jack D: 37.4%,

Helen A: 36.6%

Michelle F: 38.3%.

Unfortunately the records were mixed up as they were being filed. You have been asked to sort them out.

Draw a line from the correct temperature reading to the correct name

Task 2

Once all the children’s temperatures have been recorded the results are plotted on a line graph. The manager asks you to use Jacks’ graph to fill in his daily illness sheet.

Read the graph and then look at the daily illness sheet. Write the answers to each question in the blank boxes on the daily sheet and explain why you chose this answer over the next page.

Task 3

All children must have their weight monitored during their stay in the setting. Their first weight check is done once they have enrolled in the setting. One of the staff has asked you to weigh four new babies. The readings are shown below. Look at the readings, and then tick either ‘true’ or ‘false’ next to each statement. In the task 3: do it section write down the rules for rounding.
