ACC Athletics Champions

Our Athletics team were big winners at last Friday’s ACC Athletics Carnival at the State Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont, with a dominant display from start to finish yielding plenty of silverware for the trophy cabinet. An outstanding all-round performance from our athletes in both the track and field arenas was backed up by a terrific showing in the day-ending relays, where we were to the fore in every race. As is often the case in sporting achievement, it is important to recognise the contribution of all team members to a result such as this. All representatives who managed to bring in points, regardless of the division or place, were important to us. The result was an accurate reflection of the talent that we possess in our ranks and the strong showing from our junior athletes, means that we should be very optimistic for the next few years. There is still room for improvement in several areas of our preparation, and we should be preparing for 2020 with the aim of making a strong impact in a higher division. We are certainly capable. Results were as follows: Irene McCormack Catholic College 1789 Kennedy Baptist College 1624 Kingsway Christian College 1607 Kolbe Catholic College 1589 MacKillop Catholic College 1572 Swan Christian College 1449 Lumen Christi College 1441 John Paul College 1431 Age Category Shields: Junior Boys 1st Junior Girls 1st Senior Boys 1st Senior Girls 2nd Overall Boys 1st Overall Girls 1st Congratulations to the following team members who achieved placings in their respective Age Championships: Samara Sallie Year 7 1st Brayden McCarthy Year 11 1st

We were delighted that over 60 grandparents, were able to join us as we acknowledged the special role and relationship they play in the lives of families. Mrs Pearce, herself a much-loved grandmother, was our Master of Ceremony. Catering was led by Miss Thompson and her Year 11 Hospitality class, together with Mrs Duncan from our Canteen, and our musically gifted Year 11 student, Thomas Berard, entertained on piano. Thank you to everyone involved. Mr John Swindells Assistant Deputy Principal Campus Ministry

Irene’s Pilgrimage 23 Year 10 students were selected to participate in a five-day pilgrimage to locations in Western Australia that were significant to Irene McCormack. Irene’s Pilgrimage, a tradition at our College, commenced on Wednesday, 11th September at the Paul Rafter Centre, where Sr Wendy, of the Sisters of St Joseph, farewelled the pilgrims. We began our pilgrimage by travelling to St Joseph’s Convent in South Perth to meet Sr Maree, who lived and worked with Irene. Our travels then took us to Safety Bay where the Josephite Holiday House stands. There students met Sr Catherine and Sr Francis who had also lived and worked with Irene, and they gave us an insight into the wonderful person Irene was. The pilgrims, excited for adventure, then went to Busselton to enjoy some fish and chips on the beach, and visited the local church to speak to Deacon Greg and Sr Bernadette who had known Irene personally. It was wonderful to hear such heartfelt stories about Irene.

On Thursday we visited Kearnan College in Manjimup where Irene was Principal, and met with two of Irene’s close friends, along with other Year 10 and 12 students from Kearnan College. We exchanged experiences and knowledge about Irene. On Friday we drove through Kellerberrin in the South West of WA where Irene had grown up. On Saturday we went to Trayning where we met Irene’s sister, Bernadette McCormack, at the Parish Church. We spent time with her and listened to her fond memories of Irene. There we discovered the old convent location, the old school site where Irene attended and the Labyrinth that pilgrims from previous years had built. We were fortunate to have been able to each lay an engraved plaque with our name on it on the Labyrinth stones. Our travels then took us to Kununoppin Hospital where Irene was born and St Gertrude’s in New Norcia, where Irene was the last religious teacher. On Sunday the pilgrims visited the Monastery church in New Norcia where Mass was held.

Five days after we embarked on our pilgrimage, we arrived safely back at the College. Our journey had come to an end. Our wonderful experience quickly became precious memories for the pilgrims of 2019. The journey not only deepened our relationships between each other, but also with Irene herself.

Interschool Academic

The Interschool Academic Competition was hosted by Alkimos Christian College on Thursday, 19th September, as an opportunity for Year 7 students to demonstrate the many skills and talents they possess. A team of six students, Dante Armstrong, Jericho Ayalde, Hayley O’Toole, Tahlia Stokes, Sofie Thew, and Dustin Uriarte, were selected to represent our College. There were a variety of categories that the team had to participate in which included; Mathematics activities, English activities, General Knowledge, Arts, Design and Construct and Problem Solving. Overall, they were great competitors and demonstrated their brilliance. Our students won the General Knowledge category and received a trophy. Year 11 Marine and Maritime Studies – Fisheries Department Excursion Students from Year 11 Marine and Maritime Studies attended another full day at the Fisheries Department, Hillarys, on Wednesday, 18th September. The excursion gave students a brilliant overview of the roles and responsibilities of the Fisheries Department in managing WA’s prime marine resources, namely our fish stocks, abalone and Western Rock Lobster. Students carried out ‘fishing scenarios” which gave them a greater understanding of sustainable fishing yields, and the rules and regulations for recreational and commercial fishing. Students also got to know their fish species. In the photograph, Lily is holding up a Spanish mackerel, fortunately of legal size and therefore a keeper.

Page 9: Best Wishes to the Members of the Class of 2019€¦ · IMCC Newsletter 30 ... Best Wishes to the Members of the Class of 2019 Year 12 students finished formal classes this week,

Students examined and measured abalone to determine if they were of legal size and weight. They also looked at the lifecycle of the Western rock lobster, the most prominent fished resource in WA, which is worth approximately $400 million dollars annually, hence the need to be very conversant with the lifecycle of these amazing crustaceans. This ensures future stocks are constantly replenished and not over-fished, which was a major concern in the 2006-2007 crayfish season when the catch tonne reduced dramatically, putting many concerned in panic. As a result, the Quota Management System was introduced by Fisheries Management is still in place today.

Students examined various tiny marine animals under the microscope from local samples such as tanaids, brittle stars and puerulus (baby crayfish). Another great day was had by all. I am so proud of their enthusiasm, great behaviour and engagement in the day. Mrs Merryl Byfield Science Teacher

Social Science – Ancient Chinese History & Culture

As part of the investigation that Year 7 students are undertaking in Ancient Chinese History & Culture, there was an opportunity to investigate some customs, one of these being the Lantern Festival. The students found that it was celebrated in the Spring. They revealed it was celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar cycle after the Chinese New Year. Students discovered that the Chinese calendar was based on the 28-day lunar rather than the solar cycle. Students made paper lanterns, the traditional material of lantern making, decorating the lanterns with Chinese characters and symbols much like the custom of the day. Some students chose to use pictographs and decorated them appropriately. Mr Edward Bryant Head of Library

Year 7 French Breakfast On Tuesday, 24th September, the Year 7 French classes and Mademoiselle Harrison enjoyed a French breakfast. The students asked Mademoiselle Harrison in French if they could have a croissant, a profiterole and orange juice, for a fun activity at the end of the term. This also helped students with their French language skills. Jack Syme Year 7DA

NAPLAN Results In the College’s second year of using NAPLAN online, the results of the Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN have been released. Whilst we recognise that NAPLAN is only a snapshot of student performance and we place far more emphasis on student learning and achievement in our school courses, it is useful to provide a brief overview of results. The Year 7 results are similar to previous years, with Reading and Writing above the Australian average, and Reading, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling and Numeracy results at, or almost at, the Australian average. The Year 9 results are very good. In comparing the Year 9 results with their 2017 Year 7 performance, there have been sound improvements in many areas. These include: The increase in the percentage of students in the top 20% of students for Australia featuring:

• Reading has improved from 10% of students in Year 7 2017 to 14% of students in Year 9 this year.

• Writing has improved from 16% in Year 7 to 18% in Year 9.

Page 11: Best Wishes to the Members of the Class of 2019€¦ · IMCC Newsletter 30 ... Best Wishes to the Members of the Class of 2019 Year 12 students finished formal classes this week,

• Grammar and Punctuation has improved from 13% in Year 7 to 17% in Year 9.

• The significant reduction of the number of students in the lowest 20% of Australian students has improved.

• Reading has reduced to 9% of students in Year 9 from 18% of students in Year 7, 2017.

• Grammar and Punctuation has reduced to 15% in Year 9 from 18% in Year 7.

• Spelling has reduced to 16% in Year 9 from 18% in year 7

• Numeracy has reduced to 15% in Year 9 from 17% in Year 7.

NAPLAN reports will be released to parents via SEQTA Engage today and hard copies posted home with the end of Year Report. Mr Andrew Billingsley Deputy Principal
