SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS FOR THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A central theme of today’s readings is accepting death to receive life. What a paradox! In the First Reading, we hear the story of the Shunammite woman’s son. Because of her great hospitality, the prophet Elisha promised her a son. Today’s reading does not include the sequel. The woman later gave birth to a son, but then the child died so she went to find Elisha and made him return with her in order to heal her son and bring him back to life (see 2 Kings 4:16-37).

In today’s Second Reading, Paul reflects on Christian Baptism. He says it is like going down into death with Christ so that the baptized can come into new life with him. The Greek word baptizo means “to dip” or “to submerge.” Paul’s hearers would have understood this powerful metaphor of life out of death, because early Christians practiced adult Baptism by immersion.

Paul’s audience would have witnessed or experienced for themselves this going down into the water. Elsewhere, Paul explains that Jesus submitted to death, which came into the world because of sin, so that sin would be conquered once and for all through his Resurrection (see 1 Corinthians 15:51-57). Thus, even though they die, sin no longer has power over the baptized. They live the new life of Christ.

Today’s Gospel consists of two sets of short sayings attributed to Jesus. The first set centers on the cost of discipleship, while the second focuses on hospitality. The themes are appropriated because this reading is part of what was traditionally called the “mission discourse.” The saying that embraces the whole of the mission discourse is “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Are you willing to live the paradox?

A CHANGE IN OUR DEACON This past weekend, Bishop Malesic ordained 5 new Permanent Deacons for the Diocese of Greensburg. Our parishes were notified that Bishop Malesic has transferred Deacon Dan Frescura to serve at St. John de la Salle Parish in Delmont and St. Mary Parish in Export. His last weekend will be the July 4th weekend. We certainly want to thank Deacon Dan and his wife Debbie for all they did for our Partner Parishes! Bishop Malesic has assigned Deacon Craig Gilbert to serve our Partner Parishes and we welcome he and his wife Kathy to our parishes and look forward to getting to know them.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion for 6 of our children is scheduled for Sunday, July 19 at the St. Matthew 11:00 am Mass. Our 6 candidates are Maleaha Bonnoni, Maximo DelleDonne, Matthew Dunlap, Kyle Eckenrode, Avery Kapusta and David Lescinsky.

On Sunday, July 26 at the 11:00 am Mass, Stevie Pistininzi and Brandon Veneziani will be fully initiated into the Catholic Faith through the Sacraments of Initiation. Stevie will be baptized and both of them will be Confirmed and receive their First Holy Communion. We are very excited to celebrate this day with you!

CONFIRMATION We are now working on scheduling Confirmation for our 13 students preparing to receive that sacrament. As it proved to be a challenge in scheduling First Holy Communion during the summer, we will be offering two dates for the families to chose from. More details will come as they develop.
