Building A Better Tomorrow, Today!

Your votes have been cast and counted and your new Management Committee has been duly elected. With the installation of those elected to represent you we are delighted to state that the Special Task Force has presented a very bright outlook for the Club in that the Government has no intention of taking away our land, nor is it selling it to some entrepreneur, so members of the club can continue playing with ease of mind on this score.

We are leaving it in the good hands of the Special Task Force to get us the best deal when they negotiate with the relevant authorities and I am sure they will continue to play their part well.

On my part I would like to thank the members for their confidence in me, voting me in as the Captain of the Club. Many of you would have heard that I have a new job as the Director of Operations in KGSAAS. Yes, it is true. However, I assure you that my love for KGNS is in no way diminished. I have taken up the job as a challenge in life since I am tired of practicing medicine. Let there be rumors and concocted tales of my new job, but take it from the horse’s mouth, it does not diminish my love of and dedication to MY CLUB.

I am pleased to confirm that the budget to refurbish the Golfers’ Terrace, Men & Women’s Changing Rooms and other structures has been approved and the improvements will surely add to you enjoyment of the amenities. The sale of membership in the club has not diminished. In June (month of the AGM) and July/August (months of Puasa and Raya), we had no interviews of new members or Introduction Nights. The fee for the various categories of members has not varied much from before and new members are expected to enjoy the club for a long time, since the rumors and speculation about its future have been laid to rest.

It was unfortunate that the weather was unkind to us during the fasting month, as there was practically no rain when the golf traffic was low, and hollow-tining of the greens during the dry weather did not help either. The sprinkler system in Putra needs to be re-looked at and the greens of Putra and Kelana were bad but with subsequent rain and more work on the greens, both our courses will be more playable soon. I hope members will bear with us since nature was temporarily against us.

Golfers will have noticed that Hole 5 on Putra was reopened on September 24 and the Par-3 was closed off to enable reverting to our

CaPtaIn’S nOte

old Index 3 Par-4. Members would also have noticed that the three ponds on that hole had a make-over and the fairway is Bermuda. Pond A on the right has been lined with a non-permeable membrane while ponds B and C on the left of the fairway have been lined with anti-erosion honeycombed membranes. The hole should no longer present us with problems of water retention on the entire fairway. Kudos to the Course and Grounds Sub-Committee for a job done well!

One problem that we are continuing to face is the issue of dogs running wild on our course killing the ducks. Is there any member who has a solution to this problem? We removed some previously but more have returned and the old tricks do not work on them anymore. The MC invites any member with a workable proposal of how to get rid of the dogs to assist. We are losing too many ducks to these mongrels.

Lastly, and this has always been my belief, in KGNS “ALL ARE EQUAL AND NONE ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.” Come to the club to enjoy yourself, play your golf, be happy with your friends, use the facilities and go home a happy person. On the golf course, leave no litter. Smoke but do not throw the butts everywhere. Your sweet wrappers belong in waste bins. Pick up any rubbish you come across on the course along your way. When all is said and done, let each of us do our part to keep the course clean and neat and we will enjoy our golf more.

HAPPY CLUBBING!

Dr. Ronnie YeoClub Captain

INTRODUCTIONThe dispute surrounding the land (“said Land”) on which

KGNS was built has been in existence and on-going since the early 1990s. KGNS throughout this time has proactively taken steps in liaising with numerous entities such as the Ministry of Sports and the Prime Minister’s Department on a regular basis in an attempt to seek an amicable solution regarding the dispute, although progress and feedback has been slow.

Recent events and action taken by among others, the Subang Golf Course Corporation regarding the issue of membership of KGNS and the Federal Lands Commissioner

Kelab golf negara Subang Land Dispute (“KgnS”) – Progress

with regards to the caveat lodged by KGNS in late 2010 have resulted in a number of legal suits being filed by KGNS in an attempt to protect the interest of its members, the suits being:-(i) Shah Alam High Court Civil Suit No. 21-355 -2010 (“Main Suit”) for among others, the following:- (a) A declaration that KGNS is a rightful holder of 99 year lease on the said land with the Federal Lands Commissioner; (b) A declaration that KGNS has a caveatable interest which is capable of being registered on the title of the said Land;

PROGRESSThe Special Task Force formed by KGNS’ members during its EGM in tandem with the resolutions of the members, have taken the following steps in an effort to reach an amicable solution:-(i) handing over a Memorandum to the Prime Minister setting out

As a result of the steps taken by the Special Task Force, the following events have taken place:-(i) the Federal Lands Commissioner and the Treasury Department of Malaysia has via correspondence responded positively on the queries raised by the Special Task Force on the status of the said Land;(ii) the Federal Lands Commissioner has on 14th August 2012, withdrawn the suit against KGNS with no order as to costs; and(iii) an official meeting with the current Chairman of the Subang Golf Corporation has taken place and the Special Task Force is arranging for another meeting to take place in the near future to discuss various proposals.

Love and loyalty for our country was marked in many, many ways on the eve of the auspicious day of our independence, 31st August, and our security personnel took the opportunity to show their colours with a special security parade.

Having assembled early morning in front of the clubhouse to perform a Royal Salute as the flags of Malaysia, Selangor and KGNS were raised and a rendition of ‘Negara Ku’ was lustily sung, our trusty security personnel rounded off the occasion with a triple round of ‘Merdeka’ cheers.

Kudos to all who participated!

The club welcomed 25 new members after the Ramadan and Raya break. This means new blood or members with different professional backgrounds and talent the club can tap – provided, of course, these newcomers volunteer their services.

The club has various Sub-Committees that require members with specific expertise such as engineering, horticulture, accounting, management, human resource, doctors, lawyers and even writers (who can help us with this newsletter).

It is with this in mind that Club President, Tengku Dato’ Shamsul Bahrin had his say on Introduction Night. He also reminded that for the club to function properly there are rules and regulations to follow. There is etiquette to observe and there is the larger picture of good and healthy interaction among members to give meaning to the 1Malaysia concept. We have to recognize and respect the sensitivity of others when insisting our own rights and privileges. The senior golfers of this club can act as role models. Their understanding of our socio-cultural environment has enabled us to be recognized as a very friendly club.

Bear in mind that a healthy give-and-take attitude will do the club a world of good and as the saying goes the more one gives the more one receives – a point for the new members as well as the old.

Happy clubbing everyone!

Course Renovations take Centre Stage

tee BOX no. 17, Putra Course

Renovation Of Blue Tee AreaThe objective of this renovation was to improve the tee area to eliminate water logging and the unevenness of the surface. The blue tee area was raised 1.5 feet above the existing level and the size enlarged to 250 sq.m. All this renovation work is being carried out in-house.

HOLe no. 5, Putra CourseWaterlogging ResolvedAt the time this article was written, the renovations on fairway no. 5 were completed and it was ready for opening. The previously drainage problems the fairway used to face – becoming soggy in heavy rain, plugging of golf balls and tire marks disturbing shot making – have all been resolved.

The grass/turf root growth used to be poor due to the clayey soil that tended to compact, which meant during rain the soil retained water while in dry weather the water evaporated leaving the ground hard making ball-striking difficult, to say the least.

To solve these problems, we created a new layout to enhance the flow of water, allowing it to run off to a lower level. The composition of the soil had to be altered and this was done by adding 10-inches of soil to enhance root growth of the Bermuda Green Lees Park (GLP) replacing the old turf.

While this renovation was being undertaken, we also took the opportunity to rectify the ‘ground leakage’ problem in the pond. We engaged an expert to do the job efficiently and effectively and it called for closing the hole from March to September while the pond was lined with a non-permeable membrane.

Thus the par-4 Hole 5 was converted to a par-3, however, the index was still maintained as index 3 with the blue tee’s distance being 216m bringing the ponds in front and at the left into play. Little

wonder then that many golfers had to use a driver to carry the pond. Par for the Putra Course was changed to 71.

During the renovation at Pond C, a temporary tee box was positioned back on the fairway at 135m for the blue tee, 130m for the white tee and 125m for the red tee to make it index 15.

Renovation Of Green Side BunkerThe renovation of the green side bunker was completed before Hari Raya, the objective being to fill the bunker with new pearl white mining sand, re-do the sub-soil drainage, change from a grass surface to sand surface and in the process raise the bunker lips.

A temporary green was used by golfers while work was in progress. Both the playability and aesthetics of the hole and the course in general has improved and the high sand bunker face makes is more visible from afar. With the installation of new drainage systems, ponding during heavy rain has been eliminated.

Hollow-tine and Verti-Cut exerciseThe fasting month or Ramadhan and the greatly reduced use of the Putra Course allowed the Course and Grounds Department to do hollow-tine, verti-cut and sand top-dressing of the greens. The job was undertaken July 30-31 and August 1-2 and the exercise will ensure to improve growth and increased density of the turf.

The quality of the putting surface has improved markedly in respect of green speed and ‘bite’, adding to the golfer’s delight.

Inter-Club Karaoke Competition 2012

Harmony filled gatheringIt is possible some have missed their calling or so it seemed when the

inter-club 2012 karaoke competition was held on September 1 at the Selangor and Federal Territory Eurasian Association (SAFTEA), which played host with dinner thrown in.

And when all was said and done The Raintree Club, Kuala Lumpur, took the overall top honours with SAFTEA second and The Royal Lake Club third out of the seven clubs that participated.

Apart from KGNS, the other clubs that took part included The Royal Selangor Club, The Royal Commonwealth Society and the National Press Club.

In welcoming the participants, SAFTEA president Sheila E. De Costa imparted that it was not just about finding talent but also an opportunity to bring people together in a spirit of joy and harmony.

The KGNS karaoke team was represented by: 1) Encik Khalid Abu Hassan – Bridge over Troubled Water 2) Puan Jamilah Bte Mohd. Yusof – Anggapan Mu by Ziana Zain3) Mr. Lim Hwa Hong – Lover’s Tears by Jackie Chong4) Puan Haniza Bte Hanif – Will You Still Love Tomorrow by Debbie

Gibson5) Puan Z. Emilia Z. Abidin – Saat Hilang Cintamu by Siti Sarah6) Cik Eleena Rashidah Khalid – Matahariku by Agnes Monica The selection was based on their past record as winners in the 2011 inter-

club competition and the in-house 2012 competition which involved several preliminary rounds given the numbers that came forward to participate. Voice, repertoire and presentation were the criteria.

There was a full-dress rehearsal on August 25 in our karaoke lounge and special judge for the evening was non-other than Hj. Nazri bin Dato Mohd Hasim.

For their efforts and support of KGNS, each representative was awarded RM150 by the Sub-Committee.

The Management would like to accord their special thanks to the working committee members Raja Harun, En. Abu Bakar Sulaiman and Pn. Sharifah Khatijah Abdul Rahman for their tireless effort in seeking glory for the club.

Needless to say, there is great determination to do better in next year’s inter-club meet to be hosted by The Raintree Club.

Once again Hari Raya didn’t go without celebration at the Club as the Poolside Terrace was the venue of an Open House on 8 September and it drew around 250 members and their families.

The function was held between 3.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m with a welcome speech by the Chairman who said that bringing cheer to underprivileged children should be seen as a privilege accorded to members to show their caring attitude.

The gathering was made especially meaningful as KGNS played host to a number of Special Guests – 20 children from Rumah Kasih, Kelana Jaya, who were treated to a variety of Raya dishes and delicacies as well as received RM10 each in duit raya and goodie bags.

KgnS Hari Raya Open House 2012

Emcee for the day, Pn. Sharifah Khatijah Abd. Rahman, kept things lively throughout the event and for entertainment there was music and songs by The Fabulous Band.

Chairman of the Social & Recreation Committee Mr. T.C. Yeo attended the function together with Vice-President, Mr. Pattis Naidu and Committee Member, En. Faiz Aly Abd. Rais.

Golf etiquette involves many different areas that includes, but is not limited to, showing consideration for other golfers, respecting the golf course and abiding by the Rules of Golf. When enjoying our KGNS courses, in the spirit of the game, please be caring and observe good golf etiquette at all times.

No Disturbance One of the newest items when it comes to golf etiquette is the use of mobile phone. On the golf course, talking too loudly, holding up play, or moving around as you talk is poor golf etiquette.

Replace DivotsAfter making a shot, if you have created a divot, please repair the turf immediately. Either replace the chunk of grass into the divot, or fill the divot with the mixture that the club provides in sand bottles/sand pails.

Repair Ball MarksEvery time you are on the green, be sure to repair your ball mark and be extra helpful by repairing other pitch marks, as well.

Sand BunkersRemove or repair your footprints by raking the sand after you have taken your shot and it is also worthwhile to rake areas that other golfers have failed to smoothen.

Avoid Slow PlayProper pace of play should be maintained on the course. Plan your next shot while walking to your golf ball. You should always play at a good pace and keep up with the group in front.

gOLf etIquette

RuLeS Of gOLf

RuLeS Of gOLfBall Moves When You Move The Obstruction Your ball comes to rest against a rake near a sand bunker. You move the rake and the ball rolls into the bunker. What do you do?

You are allowed to move the obstruction out of the way and if the ball moves at all or rolls down into the bunker, you can replace the ball to its original spot without penalty.

Page 21: Berita Subang July – Sept 2012 issue

Play Ready GolfBe ready to play as soon as it’s your turn to play. If you have a clear hole and delay the group behind, invite them to play through. Also, do not record your score on or near the green of the hole you just completed. Do it on your way the next hole or on the next tee.

Lost BallHelping your partner or your opponent is good golf etiquette. Watching others hit and knowing where their golf ball comes to rest helps speed up play. In the Rules of Golf, search time is no more than ‘five’ minutes. If you are playing slow because of searching for golf balls, you should signal the players in the group behind to play through. After allowing them to play through, do not hit any golf balls until they are out of range.

ShadowCasting a shadow over somebody’s line of play anywhere on the course is not good.

Putting GreenBe careful when you are near a green. Please ensure that damage is not done to the green’s apron or putting surface by pulling a trolley improperly, or dropping a heavy golf bag without thought, or damaging the green with a flagstick. In addition, do not use the head of a club to retrieve a ball from the cup.

CourtesyWhen you have putted out, remain on or close to the putting green until all the players in your group have holed out. Happy Golfing!

In an effort to keep it fresh for caddies, a special four-week Caddy Training Programme has been organised where they will gather once a week to refresh their skills and enhance their competence.

The first session commenced on 3 September and it covered attitude, discipline, understanding between caddy and golfer and caddie duties.

The second session was held on 10 September where the focus was on knowledge and understanding of the basic Rules of Golf and Local Rules.

The participants will benefit greatly from the course and we hope our members will enjoy a marked improvement in caddie standards.

Some 80 caddies and their families were treated to a Hari Raya get together on August 27. Besides a sumptuous buffet lunch, jars of cookies were also handed out as a token of appreciation and in the spirit of the festival. On hand to wish everyone “Selamat Hari Raya” was Prof Dr. Rustam Puteh, Chairman of the Caddies Sub-Committee, together with Sub-Committee Members Mr. Tan Aik Mong and Mr Kanny.

Inter-Club Match with Jakarta Golf Club A Merry Outing Enjoyed By All!

It was time to assemble the troops and take on the challenge in the form of an inter-club match with Jakarta Golf Club and KGNS members did us proud by having 52 eager members turning up at KLIA on 5 July to catch the early morning flight to Jakarta. Upon arrival at Sukarno-Hatta International Airport the team was then taken by coach directly to Padang Golf Modern where after a quick lunch the first of many warm-up games teed off.

There were to be a number of warm-ups before the big match on Sunday 8 July and the following day a second game was organised at Permata Sentul Golf Club for the team. Getting there involved a good hour’s drive south of Jakarta towards Bogor and thankfully the course was nice and well laid out; with the only drawback being the hard greens. However, it was a satisfying game of golf that saw everyone enjoyed their round.

The next day, being Saturday, was free and easy day for all and some members took the opportunity to go shopping, while the die-hards went for another round of golf on their own.

Come competition day, team KGNS arrived at JGC early in the morning to be warmly welcomed by the JGC’s members. Breakfast was all ready and laid out and everyone tucked in before heading off for the group photography session. Once done, the players were guided to their respective tee boxes as it was a shot gun start and the game began in earnest.

Participants were delighted with the immaculate condition of the course – cow grass covered fairways with hybrid Bermuda grass on the greens and tees – and

perfect weather – sun dappled, blue skies graced the day.

The heat of competition was never far from anyone’s mind, however, Jakarta Golf Club beat KGNS soundly, with many of our members saying they did not know the format of the game!!

We were not completely let down though as in the individual honours KGNS’s Lee Yee Chong emerged second in the nett category. Our ladies did much better, with Datin Rahiman Pilus taking second place and our Ladies

Convenor, Norlida Anis taking third place. The competition was only a small part of the gathering and a mouthwatering

array of buffet dishes were served for lunch as members of both clubs mingled amid great banter, building friendships that would last long after the score would

be forgotten. To add to the merriment, JGC

put on a musical show during lunch that was interspersed with speeches and the exchange of souvenirs. Members of both clubs took to the stage to serenade those present with their vocal prowess and all too soon the trip had to come to a close – a big Thank You to our generous hosts and well done KGNS members!
