Established in July 1948, on 44 hectares of the former Willsmere Dairy Farm land, Green Acres Golf Club is another great place to visit while in Australia. The club is located just 15 minutes from the Melbourne CBD, and boasts a total of 1,500 members.

The layout is par 71 measuring 5,935 metres long for the men and 5,297 metres long for the ladies (par 74). Play, however, are made difficult by the tightness of its tracts which snakes their way around tall stands of native trees and natural billabongs (creeks that run only after rain).

Green Acres’ magnificent new clubhouse offers stunning views of the golf course and their facilities are open 7 days a week.

The clubhouse has a bar and dining facilities. Lunch is available daily, breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday, while dinners are only available on Friday and Wednesday nights.

When visiting, please be wary of their acceptable dressing code. If you plan to dine in the clubhouse, jacket and tie is recommended for men; and appropriate dressing from ladies. Masterminding Change For A Better Future

2012 came and went. Before we knew it, 2013 had arrived and so we begin another year; another year full of hope and full of dreams. Looking back on the year that was, 2012 was not that bad. As a Club we had our share of good and not so good news. The good news was the assurance by the government that the land we are sitting on is not for sale. The good news was that the AGM approved the budget for refurbishment of the Golfers’ Terrace and also the Changing Rooms. The good news was that sales of memberships never declined. The good news was that our Putra Hole 5 was opened for play and is not flooding anymore, and the good news was that we are continuing our efforts to upgrade the golf course and clubhouse for the benefit of all members.

What about the not so good news? Apart from losing some members who succumbed to old age and illnesses, there were those who left us suddenly without even a farewell. I guess even that is to be accepted. The only consolation is that their memories live on with us. They will always be spoken of fondly and associated with funny incidences. May their souls rest in peace.

It’s also true that our two golf courses is getting a little too old and patch-work repair and touch-ups can no longer retain the beauty and playability. AS such, the Management Committee and Ground Sub-Committee are looking into ways of bringing about needed improvements.

Putra Hole 9 is presently being renovated at the ponds near the green. The wet weather was the cause of the delay. The plan was just to line the slopes of the two ponds to prevent further erosion. However, due to the rain work was delayed leaving us with the hope that it can be completed by year’s end.

Putra Hole 5 was opened for play in mid September. Since then there have been no complaints but only compliments. The water-logged fairways were addressed although there were comments that the grass should have been consistent with the rest of the course. Well friends, accept it. The fairway is here to stay and until the cow grass invasion takes over, enjoy it.

More bunkers are being renovated for the benefit of golfers. Hole 16 or the Seventh Widow is now completed and play on that hole has been altered. Woe to those who are unfortunate to land in the right bunker. Hole 17 got a new tee box towards the end of the old tee area and golfers should be happier now with the level playing ground there.

Socially, the Club had activities like the Hari Raya and Deepavali functions for members. Both occasions were well attended. A Christmas celebration at the Bilik Buaya and the New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance would be held by the time members read this. I expect a good time to be had by all. Happy New Year everyone.

Apart from all that revelry, the new Development Committee headed by the President is looking into the total development of the club facilities starting with the Golfers’ Terrace and the Men’s Changing Room. Other projects that will be tackled will include the Driving Range, Ladies’ Changing Room as well as the Golf Bag Storage area. Instead of looking at each project individually, the committee is looking at the development in toto to come up with a more comprehensive plan or the so-called Master Plan. Incoming committees in later years will have to stick to this for complete development of the Club.

Our aging members are increasing in numbers and income via subscription is declining. This matter will have to be tackled soon. At the last EGM some constructive suggestions were put forward and these will be looked into by the Membership Sub-Committee before a proposal is made for the MC and then to the members.

Meanwhile, be patient, enjoy your golf, accept the Club as it is, patronise the F&B outlets and wait for the changes outlined.

An Extraordinary General Meeting of KGNS members was convened on 16th December 2012 to approve the Operating and Capital expenditure budgets for the year 2013. The President, Tengku Shamsul Bahrin, called the meeting to order at 11.00 a.m. when the required quorum was present.

The President spoke on the Club’s land matter and the general position of the Club, and then invited Mr. Samuel Ponnurajah, the Chairman of the Finance Sub-Committee, to present the budget.

Mr. Samuel Ponnurajah gave a detailed explanation of the budget that had been sent to members beforehand. He noted that for the year 2013, the Club expects gross revenue of RM14.6 million with operating expenditure of RM14 million. After taxes and lease payments, a net revenue of RM17, 680 is forecasted. He explained that in view of the thin margin of surplus, the Management Committee will stringently control operating expenses and simultaneously look to increase revenue.

Adjourned 40th AGM and Extraordinary General Meeting

The floor was later opened for questions. Interesting views and opinions were articulated by members, especially on the matter of maintenance of the golf course and clubhouse buildings and the lack thereof. Opinions were also expressed on the declining subscription fee from members which was due to increasing number of members qualifying for senior membership.

After much discussion both the Operating and Capital expenditure budgets for the year 2013 were unanimously approved by the house without amendments.

Immediately prior to the EGM the Adjourned 40th AGM was convened. The business was to appoint the external auditors. One nomination for the appointment of the firm of Morison AnuarulAzizanChew as auditors was received. There was no objection from the members present and Morison AnuarulAzizanChew were duly appointed.

In order to improve security at the Club for the safety and interest of Members a new gate control system has been installed at the main entrance to the Club and has been operational since 17 December 2012.

The system requires the use of the Membership Smart Card for both entry and exit to the Club by members. Use is similar to the ‘touch & go” system.

Two lanes for entry have been provided: one dedicated for Members Only (Right Lane) with the Left Lane for Visitors.

This system will be on trial for a period of two months after which a full review of the operations will be conducted.

The last Introduction Night for 2012 was held on 21 November and 46 new members joined KGNS. They were greeted by KGNS President Tengku Dato’ Shamsul Bahrain and the Management Committee.

Tengku Shamsul in welcoming them briefed the newcomers on the history of the club and its facilities. He also touched on the rules the new members have to observe because the Club is as good as its members. As a well-established club, KGNS reputation has to be protected, and for this, there is a disciplinary committee doing its job without fear or favour.

Yes, members have rights but they come with responsibilities too, one cannot be without the other. Tengku Shamsul urged the new members to make full use of the Club facilities, especially the food and beverage outlets because, only then would the providers be encouraged to raise quality and variety. A club video was shown and members were informed of upcoming events which they can look forward to.

Divots and Sand PailsWhat is a divot? One of the rare things that beginners and professional

golfers have in common is that they both take a chunk of soil and grass out of the ground during their shots. That empty space where the chunk of soil and grass was, is what’s known in golf as a divot.

All golfers at KGNS proudly carry a sand pail and repair the divots they make. And it is not because of golf etiquette or enforcement, but because they love the course.

In order to make it convenient for other golfers and to encourage repairing of divots, the Course & Ground department is placing additional sand pail hangers and sand mix containers at Tees 2, 6, 11 and 14 of the Putra Course to cater to those who forget to take the sand pails at the starting hole. Additional sand pail hangers and sand mix containers will also be installed in the Kelana Course.

Remember, there will be many instances where your perfect drive down the center of the fairway may end up in an unrepaired divot. It may not be fair, but the rule calls for you to play the ball as it lies. You can help other golfers by repairing your divots, and don’t be surprised to see some good golf karma come your way.

So, please take and carry a sand pail before your round of golf. Fix your own divots and any other divots too….Happy Golfing.

Course ImprovementsFairway # 5, Putra CourseFairway # 5 was closed for almost 6 months since March, to rectify the drainage problem, seepage from pond A, and erosion on pond B and C. The works were completed and the hole was opened for play on Monday, 24th September, 2012. The repair works have been successful resulting in an absence of plugged balls or soggy ground on the fairway.

Members’ patience and cooperation during those period is highly appreciated.

Blue tee Area Hole 17, Putra CourseIn order to solve the drainage problems and its unevenness, the blue tee area was closed and renovated in September. It was re-opened for play on Wednesday, 6 December 2012. The new blue tee has been raised by one foot.

LandscapingBeautification of the course is an ongoing task; there is always new work to be done. The sub-committee has agreed that more colour is needed on the course to break the monotony of green. Efforts are underway to introduce flowering trees and shrubs, and ground cover at strategic areas. Species are selected carefully so that they not only add colour to the course but are easy to maintain.

Erosion Control of Pond # 9, Putra CourseThe ponds at Hole #9 was experiencing erosion problems as this is one of the lowest areas of the course.

To prevent further damage compounded by soft soils, the sub-committee decided on rectification works. The works were delayed by the heavy rainfall experienced in October and November but it is now completed and the fear of erosion has been eliminated.

Stay FocusedDistractions are common in golf. During a round, you can be challenged by all sorts of distractions such as movement or noises created by your fellow golfers, and, like it or not, we must accept them as a part of the game.

Passing Buggy/MotorbikesIf a passing buggy, maintenance vehicle, or motorbike distracts a player causing him to miss-hit his shot, it is considered his hard luck. The player is not entitled to replay the shot without penalty.

MonkeyAnimals are outside agency. The distraction of dogs or monkeys at the tee-box or fairways is something a player must accept.

“The difference between a sand trap and water is the difference between a car crash and an airplane crash. You have a chance of recovering from a car crash.” -

Robert Trent Jones.

It’s always fun to be at KGNS New Year’s Eve party to capture the special joy and merriment of the New Year celebrations.

On 31 December 2012, our night of music including live entertainment, party poppers, sumptuous food, holiday cheer and lucky draws was relished by all. The excitement got into full gear when the evening wore on and members and guests let their hair down on the dance floor for an unforgettable evening.

At the stroke of midnight, balloons dropped, whistles were blown, the crowd cheered and gave hugs to one another, then sang Auld Lang Syne lustily. It was to remember long-standing friendships.

Happy New Year everyone! May 2013 bring you and your family good health and plenty of joy!

Oh boy! If you are a squash player at KGNS, you would have noticed that the last quarter was amazingly busy with activities!!

On 5-7 October, the KGNS squash team entered six pairs for the 13th Raintree

International Jumbo Squash Doubles Competition for the Tunku Naquiyuddin Cup 2012. With participants from all over the region attending the event, our KGNS boys definitely rose to the occasion and for the first time, two of our pairs went to the quarterfinals of the Classic Plate event after succumbing in the 2nd round of the main event.

Noting that last year KGNS had a very successful run and were eventual runners up in the Plate event, our KGNS no.3 pair of Jimmy Saw and Chin Teik tried very hard to match the feat but eventually narrowly lost in the semifinals to the eventual champion. Still, everyone can hold their heads high as they beat some very notable and seasoned pairs and players along the way.

On 23-25 November, KGNS sent in two teams for the Riger Centurion Squash Challenge. This is a SRAM (Squash Racket Association of Malaysia) supported event and has a unique format where teams have to race to reach a hundred points. Each team is allowed to have one professional player so our boys were able to rub shoulders with the current national juniors and national players. Again our boys rose above expectations and our KGNS no.1 lost in the semifinals of the Silver Plate event to SRAM legends who fielded all ex-national players as well the current squash national coach!! Our KGNS no.2 lost in the finals of the Bronze Plate event but on the way there, they beat the Air Force boys as well as the team from a local university!

Kudos to the players, as well the management and club for continually supporting squash in every way possible. Our next assignment will be the Tiger Trophy Squash tournament in December 2012 and thereafter, the prestigious Tanglin Jumbo Doubles in January 2013.

If you are keen to play and be part of this exciting team, please do join us on our social squash Mondays and Wednesdays. We look forward to welcoming you

Despite not playing the third leg at Royal Selangor Golf Club our Warda Amira teed up on the Kelana Course on Sunday, 2 December, determined to win the Order of Merit for her age group. After winning two legs, first at KGSAAS (150 points) and the second at Monterez (125 points) Warda only had 275 points to her credit. “But I was determined to win not only this last leg but also the Order of Merit for the glory of KGNS,” said Warda, who fulfilled her promise. She finished six-over 76 (39-37), one shot better than Kelab Rahman Putra’s Ong Shi Qing to win the final leg and with 150 points and a final tally of 425 points she also romped home with the Order of Merit title for group B (girls 16-18 years). “I am so happy I won the Order of Merit by playing only three legs“ added Warda.

A total of 19 KGNS juniors took part in this event. Sheikh Razak took third spot in the C group (boys under 15) while Sheikh Sulaiman grabbed sixth place in the A group (boys under 18) with Mohamad Izzat in seventh place.

Seniors out to enjoyPartnership events are very popular amongst golfers in KGNS.

These events add another dimension to competitions in golf as it allows the game to be enjoyed with good friends. Even when playing in competitions, seniors have come to the stage when a round is just for fun. If they win, fine.

If they don’t, also fine. They are simply a happy lot!

The Annual Staff Dinner for 2012 was held on 10 December. The theme chosen was “Colour Blocking Night”. The staff started arriving decked in all their finery as early as 7.00pm. It was an eye opener to see attractive ladies and handsome guys filling up the hall and to realise that these were the same people who went about their duties in the Club unnoticed.

The party started with an explosive dance performance by long legged and curvy “ladies” who styled themselves the Sexy Divas. The guys enjoyed being tickled by the Divas, but quite a few took flight.

A karaoke contest saw unlikely people going up on stage and singing their hearts out to capture the judges’ attention. Management Committee members who were present were asked to choose winners for a variety of awards without the staff knowing what was afoot.

There was a mountain of prizes to be given away and the honours were done by Management Committee members. A live band was in attendance and later provided dance music to which there was very good response from all present.

All too soon came the midnight hour and time to part. Happy faces were seen on the way out, each carrying a prize. Some even had to bring a motor vehicle to cart away their huge prizes.

Thanks are in order to the organising committee for a job well done and the Management Committee for the support rendered.

It has been observed that many members do not register themselves or their guests before using the swimming pool and other recreational activities.

In view of this, a counter has been set-up at the lobby for registration of members or their guests before using the swimming pool, tennis court and squash court facilities. A chain-linked fence has also been installed around the swimming pool area to prevent members’ guests from entering the pool without paying a fee.

Please be reminded that failure to do so will be breach of the Bye-Laws and members will be liable to Disciplinary Action.
