As expected, the newly-elected Management Committee is set to take on its tasks

for the year ahead and, will be more than happy to hear your constructive comments,

suggestions and complaints, in respect of the overall administration and operations of

the Club, particularly in the areas that are considered lacking.

Aside from being very approachable, we take this view of openness as, like you,

we believe that all members are collectively responsible for the continued well-being of

the Club and, whenever appropriate, should contribute to its improvement.

In this same context, I would call upon the experts and the experienced among the

Syabas, Arie!An international field of 126 golfers from 18 countries, including Malaysia, turned

out at the 106 th Malaysian Amateur Open staged from 22 nd to 25 th May 2008 at thePutra Course, Kelab Golf Negara Subang. The home contingent was by far thelargest with 56 golfers whereas, at the other end of the scale, single entries camefrom Australia, Northern Ireland, South Korea and Hong Kong. Making its debutin this part of the world was the team from Bahrain, comprising scratch golfersSultan Abdulla and Khalid Ahmed.

Day 1With sunny skies above and the

occasional breeze, our very ownnational player Nicholas Fung madethe most of his hot putter to card a66, the end result of a barrage of 7birdies and 1 dropped shot. Just onestroke off the pace, though, wasanother national golfer, MuhammadArie Irawan, and Filipino FerdinandAunzo. Miri-born Arie, who is nostranger to KGNS, relied on his soundshort game and putting prowess tooffset his drives. However, it wasFerdinand who posed the biggerthreat, having clinched victory at the

Karambunai Amateur Open earlier inthe month and just the week before, beat Nicholas and Arie at the SabahAmateur Open.

Day 2Rebounding from a somewhat

sluggish start, Muhammad Arie heldhis nerve to turn in a 2-under roundof 70 for a single-stroke advantageover overnight leader Nicholas Fung, who ended with an even-par 72.Taiwan’s Lee Kuan-hung shot theday’s best score of 68, havingachieved an eagle at the par-5 17th.He finished 3rd to tie with NewZealander Daniel Pierce at 139. Threestrokes adrift was Filipino FerdinandAunzo at 3-over 75, which placedhim 4th together with Malaysianinternational Hilmi Abd Rahman andThailand’s Idtiphat Silasuwan.

At this point in the pro-ceedings, 80 golfers made thecut to advance to the weekendwhilst Malaysia, ably representedby Muhammad Arie Irawan andpartner Akmal Tarmizee Nazri, claimed the first trophy of thechampionship, i.e. the teamcompetition, with a combined7-under 281 total, 3 strokesbetter than New Zealand’s DanielPierce and Sean Riordan.

Day 3With the course set

up to play longer andtighter, and difficult pinplacements to boot, the going got tough onSaturday for all andsundry, over-night lea-ders included! Philip-pines’ Dante Becierrahad a 4-under 68 (madeup of 5 birdies and1 bogey) and a totaltally of 211, whichearned him a 1-shotlead over MuhammadArie. Unfazed by the“Subang challenge”,

In thefinal showdown, the in-form Filipinowould meet Singapore’s Koh Deng-shan, who had to claw his waythrough a testy 1-up morning en-counter with Filipino Peter Villaber(decided at the 20th hole!) and, later, get past Australian Paul Mews, also with a 1-up win.

Day 3Facing Philippines’ Dante Becierra

in the finals, Singaporean KohDengshan had a less-than-anticipateduphill climb, as was the case in thesemis, to claim victory. Committee, Cik Rosmimee Abbas, officially launched theinaugural KGNS Ladies Amateur Open scheduled for 30 Juneto 2 July 2008. In the media statement, she announced thatthe new event would henceforth replace the Selangor LadiesAmateur Open. Traditionally, KGNS has been the host venuefor the Selangor Ladies Amateur Open, which has been apopular fixture in the Malaysian golfing calendar for manyyears, drawing avid participation from both foreign anddomestic lady golfers. However, in recent times, there weregrowing concerns over the viability of the event as a result ofdiminishing support, financial and otherwise, from variousquarters.

In a bid to revive the fortunes of the Selangor LadiesAmateur Open and its time-honoured traditions, the KGNSLadies Golf Committee has initiated the KGNS LadiesAmateur Open to serve as a worthy replacement for the formerwhile maintaining, in the transition, its original aims andaspirations. The inaugural championship will be a permanentfixture in the KGNS golf domain and be wholly organised byKGNS. The Open is a 2-day competition with a practice round

The Organising Committee of the 2008 KGNS LadiesAmateur Open is appreciative of and grateful to thecorporate sponsors and individual well-wishers who havecontributed towards the inaugural competition. The KGNSLadies Committee looks forward to the continued generosityof the corporate sponsors and individuals for the staging ofthe event at KGNS in the years to come.

New Faceson the KGNS Scene

Since mid April 2008, three new faces have joinedthe KGNS Management line-up, namely the GeneralManager, the Golf Manager and the F&B Executive. These key appointments have been occasioned byresignations in the respective positions earlier in theyear. In this issue of Berita Subang, we are pleased tointroduce them to the KGNS community.

Muhammad Johan bin Abdullah, 57,comes to KGNS with a bagful of experienceaccumulated over his many years in thehospitality industry. This Kuching-born East

Malaysian of Bidayuh extraction holds a Diploma in Resort andCountry Club Management from Canada and was an associ-ate member of the Club Managers Association of America.

In his early years, he was a senior flight attendant withMalaysia Airlines. After which, he went to Australia to furtherhis studies in Business and Marketing Management. Upongraduating, he worked for five years as part of the manage-ment team of a corporate resort in Victoria. He then returnedhome and landed the post of General Manager at Octville Golf

Berita Subang extends a very warm welcome and wishes them all the very best in KGNS !

Muhammad Johan bin Abdullah, General Manager

Devindran a/l K. Ravindradass, Golf Manager

K.R. Devindran’s path to KGNS (for thesecond time around!) was also backed by anequally impressive track record. It began inAugust 1990 with a nine-year stint at the Royal

Selangor Golf Club as the Senior Golf Starter/Supervisor inthe Golf Department. He then moved on to KGNS in February1999 and served as the Golf Executive for two years.

Since then, the father of three has been with Bukit UnggulCountry Club as the Golf Executive and Miri Golf Club as theGolf Activities Consultant. Along the way, the 41-year-old KualaLumpur resident also acquired a Professional Diploma in SportsManagement. Before rejoining KGNS, he was again with theRoyal Selangor Golf Club for two and a half years.

Mohd Zaki bin Abd Ghani, Food & Beverage Executive

In his 22 years in the hospitality/food andbeverage business, 48-year-old Zaki has moreor less covered the length and breadth of thecountry learning his trade. Having completed

a Diploma in Hospitality at the NPC in 1986, he began his ca-reer by tending bar at the Dayang Hotel, Petaling Jaya, andthen trekked north to Penang, waiting tables at the Orchid Ho-tel’s Fine Dining Restaurant. His subsequent and key movewas to the Banquet Department of the Equatorial (which, atthat time, had Penang’s largest ballroom that could sit 1,500)where, from 1989 to 1993, he was made the Captain and laterthe F&B Assistant Supervisor.

A short stint as the F&B Captain at the Concorde KL fol-lowed before he headed north again, to serve as ManagementTrainee at the Penang Mutiara Beach Resort, and later east-

bound to serve as the Assistant Manager at Awana Kijal Hoteland Golf Resort – all in the years 1995 to 1998. The SantiniRestotante Italiano was his next place of work, where he servedas the Assistant Manager from 1999 to 2001.

Soon after, he opted for a self-employed stint in his home-town Seremban, specialising in the Indonesian fare (nasipadang). Zaki’s last two appointments prior to KGNS were withSwiss Inn KL and, then, as the F&B Coordinator of AncasaHotel Spa KL from 2005 to 2007.

He has a three-fold plan for the KGNS F&B Department, namely:

and Country Club, Johor, from 1996 to 1999.After a brief attachment to PGA (UK) Golf Academies,

Johan’s next appointment was Assistant General Manager ofthe Mines Resort Golf Club. His responsibilities included start-up operations for the Borneo Heights Resort, developed byCountry Heights Holdings Bhd. In 2001, Tropicana Golf andCountry Resort beckoned him to serve as General Manageruntil his ‘retirement’, when he was appointed the Golf Manage-ment Consultant to Saujana Scapes and Greens.

Johan’s vision for KGNS is very much attuned to that ofthe Club, i.e. “making KGNS the premier membership club inthe country”. To this end, his plan is to steer the managementteam towards service excellence and delivering expectations.

The immediate tasks for Devindran, or Devin for short, upon his re-entry into KGNS were to revitalise the GolfDepartment and to hasten the preparation for the 106thMalaysian Amateur Open/Malaysian Matchplay Champion-ships, the TSM Challenge and the inaugural KGNS LadiesAmateur Open, as well as the staple trophy events andMonthly Medals!

It has been a rather hectic schedule but, Devin istaking it all in his stride. Indeed, in his own words, hisaspirations for KGNS are to “improve and bring changesto the Club so as to provide excellent services to KGNSmembers in line with its status as the “Most PrestigiousGolf Club”.

to introduce a wide variety of food selectionsto upgrade the standard of meals and services, andto achieve the highest profitability for the Department, espe-cially in the banqueting sector

In its continuing commitment to improving course playability andenhancing the aesthetics of golfing at KGNS, the Course and GroundsSub-Committee has undertaken a number of initiatives to achieve these ends.As advised by the Course Superintendent, Encik Shamsul Bahrin, projects, large and small, in the pipeline cover both the Kelana and Putra Courses,as follows:

Course & GroundsSub-Committee

1. Kelana CourseThe Kelana fairways have, in past, always been susceptible to being soggy during the wet season or after rainy spells,

resulting in water-logging, reduced playability and a lot of plugged balls. As reported in the January-March issue of BeritaSubang, corrective measures were taken to improve drainage with the construction of water traps/drain sumps. Now, as anadded effort to overcome the problem, the Course Maintenance team will be “top-dressing” the fairways, by laying on sand up toa depth of 2 inches over a scheduled period of time.

Fairway Hole 9 after the top dressing

Fairway Hole 9, Kelana Course, before the top dressing

With soil improvement in mind, the sandwill both give firmness to the ground and actas a buffer between the earth underneathand human traffic above. The blanketing ofthe fairways with sand will, however, be donefor strategic locations only, i.e. projectedball-landing areas instead of from tee togreen. At the time of writing, work hasbegun on Fairway No. 9 and will progress toother affected holes in due time.

To prevent sogginess on the fairwayTo prevent ball-plugging during playTo prevent late opening of the courseafter rain

Note: Buggies are not allowed during wetseason.

This is a classic double dogleg hole that plays from a slightly elevated tee box, which demands a long carry to a narrow fairway bending to the left. Big hitters like tocarry a fairly large bunker on the fairway’s left centre to be in position to attack withtheir second shot.

Two obstacles lie in wait for this second shot. A formidable pond lurks on thegreen’s left side and players must avoid a hidden bunker that guards the putting surface’sright front portion.

The hole is designed to be played with a drive to the right of the fairway sand trap.A second shot is to a narrow fairway pinched by trees on the left and a hillside on theright, and then a third shot into a well protected green. This is much easier to executeand while it may only occasionally produce a birdie, it can also present double andtriple bogeys.

Day 1 to 3: ShanghaiThe French Quarter, or Xintiandi in

Chinese, glitters with huge departmentstores such as Isetan, Printemps andParkson, cafes, boutiques, odd antiqueshops and some of the best architecture– old art décor apartments, neo-classi-cal mansions and villas with quaintbalconies and doorways. The hunt forcheap mobile phones with TV facilitybrought us to another part of the city and

Shanghai, the gateway to the Yangtze River basin, was an ideal trading port where the British firstopened their concession in 1842 after the first Opium War. This was followed by the French in 1847and the Japanese in 1895 – each in turn parcelling the city into autonomous settlements. By 1853,Shanghai, effectively a Western invention built on trade in opium, silk and tea, had overtaken allother Chinese ports.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was born here in 1921. After numerous setbacks, finally in1949 CCP ‘liberated’ the city known as ‘the Sin City’ by eradicating slums, swindlers, drug runners,

gangsters and backstreet pimps but in the process, put the city to sleep! To bring back its formerglory, the city began a massive renovation project in the late 90s, turning it into a pedes-

trian-only shopping extravaganza. Today, Shanghai – Paris of the East – is a thrivingmetropolis with a population of 13.2 million and an area of 6,340 sq km,

We were treated to orchestra and balletperformances, with young participants inthe latter having to cut short their recessjust to entertain us, four senior citizens, with their precision and vigour! In theevening we attended and thoroughlyenjoyed a must-see wholesome acrobatshow with the tagline: “If you miss this, you haven’t seen Shanghai.”

Day 3 began with a visit to theOriental Pearl Tower, an inspiring pieceof architecture, for a sensational viewof Shanghai. However, the haze put paidto our excitement as visibility droppedto only 1 km! The Shanghai HistoryMuseum, located at the base of thetower, recreates the Shanghai of thepre-1949 era.

After an Indian lunch, we proceededto the Yu Garden. This rock garden wasnur tured into existence by the Panfamily, a rich official between 1559 and1577 during the Ming Dynasty. Adjacentto it is the Yu Garden Bazaar, which isfull of antiques, souvenir shops and deli-cious snacks, so much so it resembles aDisneyland of historical China!

Day 4: SuzhouSuzhou, pronounced as ‘sujou’, has

a population of 5,749,900 and is widelyknown for its gardens, canals and a famedsilk centre. This city is known as theVenice of the East and its canals areconnected to the world’s longestwaterway, the Grand Canal, which runsfrom Hangzhou to Beijing 1,800 km north.

We took a trip to the New EconomicZone, an industrial and residential area

beautifully planned and developed bySingaporeans. It is adjacent to a verylarge man-made ‘Golden Cock’ Lake witha well laid-out and manicured park. Thekey features of Suzhou’s gardens arerocks and water and, like the Zen gar-dens of Japan, there are few flowers.

Our next stop was Choyers,Suzhou’s No. 1 silk mill, with a big show-room that sells a wide variety of silk items.

Day 5 to 6: HangzhouWith a population of 6,114,000,

Hangzhou (pronounced as ‘hang jou’) isthree hours drive southwest of Shanghai.‘In heaven, there is paradise; on earthSuzhou and Hangzhou’, so says one ofthe tourist brochures. Of the three citieswe visited, Hangzhou is by far the mostbeautiful and serene, with classicalarchitecture, tree-lined streets and, ofcourse, the West Lake. All these makeHangzhou a lovely place to be.

After a wonderful meal of Peking duckat a Muslim restaurant, we visited theLeifeng Pagoda, a memorial constructeda thousand years ago to commemoratethe legend of the White Snake Princess.According to local folklore, a white snakeprincess from the ‘upper world’ camedown to earth only to fall in love with aman. A monk, who felt that it was wrongfor an immortal to marry a mortal, turnedher back into a snake and hid her beneatha temple, but not before she bore a son. This son grew up and rescued the mother, and the family lived happily ever after. No further reference to the whereaboutsof the monk was mentioned. The original

pagoda was replacedwith a grand seven-storeypagoda a few years agoand from the top, we hada magnificent view of theWest Lake and its shores.

A light morningdrizzle on the sixth daydid not deter us fromtaking a cruise on theWest Lake. It was ablessing as the view withwhite mists swir lingaround was like a Chi-nese scenery painting! We later took a leisurewalk in the beauti-fully designed park, itsgardens tendered withWest Lake, Hangzhou

loving care.Next was a visit to the Dragon Well

tea plantation in Mei Ji Wu village. It issaid that drinking Dragon Well tea is liketaking a stroll in the clouds! After a salestalk by a beautiful Hangzhou girl at thetea centre, we ended up buying 1 kg ofpurportedly China’s best tea!

In the evening, we went to theesplanade to watch a free musicalfountain show. Water jets are located inthe lake itself. With the lake as thebackground and foreground, the lighting, water formation and music were simplya superb combination.

Day 7: ShanghaiWe visited the Bund, an assortment

of neo-classical downtown New York-styleand monumental antiquity. Known asShanghai’s Wall Street, The Bund datesback to the 20s. Not far behind it is theChinese City, a maze of narrow lanes, lined with closely-packed houses. Wethen moved on to Nanjing Road, China’sgolden mile.

In the evening, we took a boatcruise along the Huangpu River whichseparates the Bund from Shanghai’sCentral Business District, the construc-tion of which started eighteen years agoon former farmland. Today, it is at leastfive times the size of the CBD of Sydney, and development is still continuing at arapid pace. Buildings on both sides of theriver are fully lit on Friday and Saturdayevenings for the benefit of boat cruisers. That was the grand finale of our visit toShanghai.

A somewhat ‘late’ starter,Daniel took to playing golf at age11 and, a year later, began play-ing seriously once he secured hishandicap in December 2004.There was no looking back as hegot into the “many junior eventsin and outside of KGNS”. His first

2006 KGNS Junior Club Championship (Nett prize)2007 KGNS Year-End Golf Tournament2008 Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit.

A regular at the various MGA Junior Golf Clinics in-cluding that run at the Malaysian Open, practice days forthe soon-to-be-16 student are limited to weekends mostly.Daniel has a number of outings under his belt, viz the2005 Sarawak Junior Golf Masters, the 2006 and 2007KGNS Club Championships, the 2007 and 2008 TSM GolfChallenges and the 2008 Malaysian Amateur Open. Therewere also many events where this young man, who citedAdam Scott as his favourite, garnered experience andhad his mettle tested, including:

Junior SportExcel tournamentsSportExcel Grand Final 2007Pharmaton Amateur Golf Circuit 2007

Unbeknown to many in KGNS, golfers included, there is a host of proven talent amongst the younggolfers in our community who have done themselves, the club and, in some cases, the country proud. Onand off, there is a write-up or two lauding their exploits and achievements at the various junior golf tourna-ments but little on the golfers themselves, e.g. how they started, their hobbies and their ambitions. Hence, this edition of Berita Subang highlights the Junior Elite Team in a special feature about these young golfers.

cap of 4 and his favourite professionals are Geoff Ogilvyand Tiger Woods. However, Ashraf is not totally consumedwith golf as his other pastimes include football, onlinegames and music.

How good is his game? Well, his drives, as he puts it,are “250 metres consistently” and the best part of his golfis chipping! He plays on weekends, is coached on hislong game on Saturday afternoons while weekdays arereserved for the short one, i.e. approaches and fromaround the greens. This explains how his “three greatestgolf achievements” (as he calls them) – 1st placing at the2004 Penang Junior Open, the same at the 2007 KGNSJunior Golf Championships and the 2007 MSSS GoldMedal – came about! For 2008, he took the top spot atSportExcel Johor and finished in the top 16 at the recentMalaysian Amateur Open.

Ashraf’s career goal is to be an accountant, whichwill be a “gimme” in golf parlance, given his commitmentand dedication!

tourage of family members (all non-golfers) in tow. Play-ing with another notable KGNS junior golfer and now friendMohammad Hisyam, he finished fourth in the no-handi-cap age group. That status changed quickly when he wasassigned one at the age of 6.

Rizal reckons his best moment in golf was when hewas selected as the Most Talented Young Golfer at the2002 Sarawak Junior World Masters (with a card of 75,

fore four years later when he finished ninth out of 30 inGroup C at the 2001 KGNS Junior Year End Competition! That was his first-ever try at competitive golf and his flightmates then were Dinie Zikri and David J Augustine.

The passion and love for the game took hold and withPro Kenny Reutens as his coach and guide for fivemonths, Gavin went on to make his indelible mark in golfby winning an awesome seven out of eight JuniorBi-monthly Medals in 2003 and by capping that with theNett Champion’s title at the Junior Year End Competition.Encouraged by these achievements, he persisted in hiswinning ways in the ensuing year, working diligently athis game as his “golf accomplishments continued toprogress”.

In 2005, young Gavin was comfortably playing toa single-digit handicap – quite a feat for a 15-year-old!Today, he is a 7-handicapper and relishes, with well-earned pride, the “30 golf tournament victories in hand”.He has this to say: “I am very glad and proud to be in theKGNS Junior Elite Team. I feel very honoured to repre-sent KGNS in any tournament.”

72 and 64). After holing a 60-foot birdie putt at the last,he threw the ball into the crowd a la Tiger Woods!Another special time for him was being the then young-est person selected to represent the MGA at the HongKong Junior Open in 2004.

His favourite golf moment was when he hit a blindsecond shot with his 3-wood and found the cup atthe 20th Hole at KGPA during a MSSKL practice round.Rest assured there will be more such eagles andecstatic moments for Rizal. Read on for more on thistalented teenager!

Dinie Zikri

Having recently turned 17in June, Dinie Zikri is alreadyan old hand at golf with 11 yearsof the game, mostly competitive, under his belt! He started outwhen he was 6 and a yearlater, he played in his first-ever tournament, the KGNS

Year-End Competition. Back then, he came underthe tutelage of his first coach, Rabbani, which led to, amongother things, him being assigned a valid handicap of 24when he was 10 years old and, more importantly, his“coming of age” in the game when in-born talent speaksfor itself.

Whilst still in primary school, he began makingthe rounds of junior golf, journeying through and growingfrom strength to strength in the competitive arena. All of these contributed to a growing number ofinspiring achievements for this lad, which included thefollowing:

Silver medal (2003), Bronze medals (2002 and 2007),fourth placing (2005 and 2006) – Majlis SukanSekolah-sekolah Selangor (MSSS)Nett Champion – Cross Creek KGNS Leg 200413th placing – Malaysian Junior Premier-Elite GolfCircuit 20064th placing – SportExcel KGNS Leg 2007Several wins and runner-up spots – KGNS JuniorMedal events

In the midst of all that, he also participatedactively in the Selangor Amateur Open, the SelangorTour Circuit, the Philippines Open 2005, theSingapore Invitational Open 2007 and the TSM GolfChallenge. His special moment in golf, though, was achieving his hole-in-one on 20th January 2007(a date forever etched in his memory, no doubt!) atthe 7th Hole of Sultan’s Nine off the blue tee with a7-iron.

For now, however, Dinie would like to remain asa fair player as he wants to study first. Turning pro is alsoan option to be considered in the future.

Syabas to all our young golfers, and may the force bewith you!

My First Junior GolfTournament

When I was 6, I startedplaying tournament golf. Itwas held at KGNS. Mywhole family followed mefor the gruelling nineholes (at that time). Eventhough it was tiring, I en-joyed it. The guy who Iplayed with is now my goodfriend: Mohammad Hisyam.(smiling) That just goes toprove that we have beengood friends for a long time!I finished four th in theno-handicap age groupthat year.

My First InternationalJunior Tournament

The Thailand JuniorOpen 2002 was the first in-ternational junior tourna-ment I participated in. I hadthe honour of carrying theMalaysian flag during theopening ceremony! At theend of the tournament,I obtained fifth placing in theUnder-8 category.

My Favourite GolfMoment

A blind shot during theMSSKL golf practice atKGPA earned me an eagle

at the 20th hole! When wewalked up to the green tosearch for my ball, myteacher asked me to lookin the hole. True enough –my ball had entered thehole with a remarkabletwo. The best part was thissecond shot was hit usinga 3-wood.

My Best Golf MomentDuring the 2002

Sarawak Junior WorldMasters, I was selected asthe Most Talented Young

Golfer of the tournament.I finished 2nd in the Under-8 category. I played 75,72 and 64. I holed a 60-foot birdie putt on the lastand threw the ball intothe crowd like my idolTiger Woods!

I was also sent by theMalaysian Golf Assosation(MGA) to Hong Kong in2004 and became theyoungest boy to be se-lected to represent theMGA in local and interna-tional tournaments.

My Future PlansMost likely I will trans-

My AcademicAchievements

I obtained 4 As and 1 Bfor UPSR and was an-nounced as Johanianof the Year 2001–2006(best student). Apart fromthat, I was a school librar-ian from 2004 to 2006.In 2005, I was also elected

GolfI started to hold a golf club maybe when I was 5

or 6 years old. Actually when I grow up, I would like tobe a doctor. Otherwise, I want to be a professional

In the last issue of Berita Subang, weintroduced KGNS’ bubbling youngest juniorgolfer Aisyah Bte Mohd Ismail, who is pres-ently under the KGNS Junior Golf Clinic. Inthis issue, our 8-year-old shares her interests.

golfer like Paula Creamer – I want to be Malaysia’s Paula.I like to play golf because my father, my brother and my uncle play

the game. In fact, I like to follow my father around because it is fun. Mymother is very busy at home and she has to take care of six cats. Shesaid I should play golf so I can spend more time with my father. Mymother has stopped golfing. My two sisters do not like to golf but my13-year-old brother is a good golfer. I like to come to KGNS becauseI like to swim after my golf lessons. I don’t know how to swim becauseI can’t float, so I prefer to dive.

My clubsI like to hit with my 7-iron and the big, long one (driver). I lost my

7-iron recently so I have to use my 6-iron and it is very tiring. However,I know that if I want to be a good golfer, I must continue to practise.

PracticeI practise a little with my brother in our garden. We cannot swing at

the ball in case it goes to the neighbour’s house, so we just do ourchipping.

When I am not practising golf, I play with my cats. My smallest cat isnamed Simba. The rest are Quinney, Bella, Snowy, Gabby and Lola. One just died and the other one met with an accident, so it was very

sad. Don’t you think Lola sounds like Paula?Paula is a good golfer. I think Paula is betterthan Tiger because I like that name. I still likemy name, Aisyah, but I wish my name is also

Paula. If not, Laila is also good – it’s a nicename.

My Favourite ColourI like pink and maybe some of

the rainbow colours, but pink is my fa-vourite because it is for girls.

My Golf LessonsMy coach always say this: take one

step, two steps and three steps, and hit.Sometimes I can hit pretty far but thereare other children who are better than me.I don’t mind that and just play my game.

I have six friends and we meet whenwe come for our lesson. The only time

I missed my lessons was during my birthdaywhen we had to go to Johor. My mother said

it was okay to skip the lesson and mybrother is always very happy if he canskip his golf lesson.

This, however, is routine in dry andsunny conditions – the crunch comeswhen the course is both rain as well aswind-swept! Then, she has to contendwith wet and/or flooded compactedsand in a total of (count them!) 63bunkers for the Putra Course and 50for Kelana! It is a race against time asthere are only that many hours in theworkday but the grandmother of 5 isunfazed by the challenge, having seenit all in her 33 years of service withKGNS.

Puan Eraliammah’s first sight ofKGNS was back in 1975 when, at 18and already a mother of one, shestarted out as a field worker doing avariety of jobs, from weeding of greensto re-planting of turf, landscaping andgeneral maintenance. She recalls thatwhat we now call “Kelana Jaya” was

Eraliammah a/p KuppanMachine Operator,Course & GroundsDepartment

At 53, Puan Eraliammah is blessed with 4 children, 3 of whom are married with families of

their own, and is a senior member of the Course and Grounds Maintenance crew. Along with

another colleague, her key tasks, since her designation as machine operator in 1991, are to clean,

machine-rake and set bunkers on both the Putra and Kelana courses. Since foliage abounds in

KGNS and with the current weather patterns, there is the added chore, she remarked, of sweeping

and removing dead leaves, dried twigs and other debris before tending to the bunker sand itself.

then the Seapor t Estate rubberplantation (of which KGNS was part),the Federal Highway was but a countryroad linking KL and Klang and SungeiWay was just a sleepy township.

Her most vivid memory of KGNSwas the unbelievable sight of thehorrendous havoc wreaked on Putra bythat thunderstorm a couple of yearsago. The complete closure of the courseand the immense task of cleaning upafter were unprecedented in KGNShistory but the incident itself willalways serve as a reminder of Nature’sfury. To a query by Berita Subang,Puan Eraliammah indicated that, withretirement looming, she plans to takea well-deserved rest and spendmore time with her retired lorrydriver husband, her children andgrandchildren.
