The Lake Benalla Walk map shows access points for all users. To ensure the enjoyment and safety of all, please respect the rights of other users of the track at all times. To help us protect the environment, please do not disturb plants and animals. Help keep Benalla beautiful and place all rubbish in bins provided. The Lake is a great place for walking your dog. Be sure to keep dogs on leads, unless you are in a designated off-lead area. Please always clean up after your dog. The availability of drinking water along the track is limited, so users are encouraged to take adequate supplies. Remember to wear sunscreen and insect repellant. Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Memorial – The memorial was erected to mark the achievements of local Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop. Captain Hector Waller Memorial – The monument has been erected to honour Capt. Hec Waller in his home town. It also honours all service personnel lost at sea with no known grave but the sea itself. Toll Gates – The toll gate was used at the western end of the first high level bridge built over the Broken River in 1874. The toll was abolished in 1878. Tally Ho Taylor & Faithfull Massacre Site – Near this site on Wednesday 11 April 1838, 18 of George and William Faithfull’s men were attacked. Nine men died. A plaque commemorates this site. Historical Rail Bridge – The bridge was the second of its type built in Victoria. At the time of construction it was the longest metal girder bridge in Australia, and remained so until the completion of the Echuca Bridge in 1877. Historic Cemetery Site – A cemetery occupied this site from 1839 – 1854. A plaque can be seen in this location. Total Distance: 4.25km, 45 - 90 minute duration Scenic Short Option: 1.85km - Commencing at the Ceramic Mural, continue along towards the Aboriginal Community Garden and the Art Gallery, returning to the Mural via the Lake Benalla Bridge. Bushland Short Option: 2.4km - Commencing at the Ceramic Mural proceed under the Lake Benalla Bridge and continue along via Jaycee Island and return to the Ceramic Mural by crossing the Lake Benalla Bridge. The Lake Benalla Walking Track takes you through the Benalla Botanical Gardens, with it’s suite of exotic species, before heading into the remnants of the original River Red Gum forest. Jaycee Island, with its magnificent towering Moreton Bay Figs and exotic Bunya Bunya Pines, is the perfect place to experience the region’s flora and fauna. While walking around the lake, look out for the rakali, an Australian native water rat that can be seen swimming and feeding during the day in and around stream logs. It has large webbed feet, a thick water repellent fur coat and a distinctive tipped tail. The best spots to see the rakali are just past the bridge (city side) and near the bridge at little Casey Island. You can also see the platypus, which spends long periods under water, searching the lake bed for food and only comes to the surface to breathe. The best time to spot the platypus is at dusk around Little Casey Island. There are three species of native turtles that inhabit Lake Benalla: the Eastern Snake-necked Turtle, Broad- shelled Turtle and Murray River Turtle.
