Potentates Message
William “Bill “Wells
Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Ben Ali. I hope all of you are doing well and staying
safe. Again, as in 2020, this year has been challenging. With the Corona Virus Delta Variant
causing havoc in our communities, the Ben Ali Divan and I decided for every one’s health, that
we should cancel the September Stated meeting, Monte Carlo fundraiser and the Annual
Shrine/Scottish Rite picnic. We will continue to monitor the public health situation and make
decisions regarding future events at the Shrine Activities Center. And if the virus was not
enough, the wildfire season returned to Northern California and seems worse than last year.
Please continue to pray for our firefighters and first responders as they protect us. Please con-
tinue to pray for those families who have been affected by the fires and by the pandemic.
Please reach out to those who need our support.
Hopefully October will be a better month to have fun and fellowship! By the time you read
this newsletter we would have returned from the Shriners Open Golf tournament in Las Vegas.
This is a fantastic annual event that generates publicity for the Shriners Hospitals system. I
want to thank Noble Leigh and Lady Margot Leidig for coordinating the Ben Ali Shriners par-
ticipation in this event. And I want to thank the 15 volunteers who attended the tournament!
If all goes well, our next Stated meeting will be on October 12th. The theme will be Oktober-
fest! So, get your Lederhosen out (if you have them!) and get ready for a great meal prepared
by our Purveyors, music and beer!
On Saturday, October 23rd, from 9 AM to 2 PM, we will be holding Club and Unit Officer Ori-
entation at the Ben Ali Activities Center. There will be breakout sessions for club and unit
presidents, secretaries and treasurers and the training will feature speakers from Shriners Hos-
pital for Children Northern California. Orientation is open to present, new and returning club
and unit officers. Ladies are welcome to attend an art program lead by our Chief Rabban’s La-
dy, Deedie Lagala. There is a small $10 fee for the ladies’ program. The temple will provide a
free continental breakfast and a BBQ lunch prepared by the Ben Ali Wrecking Crew! Please
RSVP to the office at 916-920-4107 by October 20th.
On October 24th at 11:30 AM, the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine (LOS) ILA Neb Chapter will
be holding their annual Fashion Show at the Ben Ali Shrine Activities Center. See the attached
flyer for details. Hope you can attend and support our LOS!
As a reminder, the Fall Ceremonial is November 6th. Please try to attend to welcome new
members into our Shrine Temple. I am asking that each club and unit send representatives to
meet the new members and talk about their club and/or unit and to encourage the new mem-
bers to be active. Petitions are available on the Ben Ali website and at the Ben Ali Shrine of-

Potentates Message Continued
We will be honoring our Veterans during the November stated meeting on Tuesday, November
9th. The doors will open at 5:00 PM and the meeting will be streamed for those who cannot
attend. The Legion of Honor will lead the meeting and there will be a “Quilt of Honor Presen-
tation.”
Folsom Veteran’s Day Parade November 11th in the City of Folsom. Please attend and support
Ben Ali as we honor our Veterans! Contact our Director General, Noble Roger Moore at 209-
601-1448 or at [email protected] if you have any questions.
Then we have the Youth Shrine Bowl at Sacramento State Hornet Field on November 20th.
We will have a tailgate Party at 1:00 PM in Parking Lot #9 before he game at 4:00 PM. We
need your support, please come to the game in your Shrine gear and FEZ, march around the
track at half time. This game is a major fundraiser for the Ben Ali Shrine General Fund. The
club or unit with the most attendance could win the rights to the “Benny Trophy!” Hope to
see you there.
I miss the camaraderie and ability to see you in person. We will be together again and enjoy-
ing each other in person soon! Take care and be safe!

Happy Fall to all!! To say 2021 has been challenging is an understatement!
The purpose of the annual holiday craft faire is to raise funds to replenish the Ben Ali Transportation Fund.
To confirm participation numbers, contact was made with the units/clubs with the following results:
Clubs/Units that agreed/committed to participate at that time: 4 with a total of 10 tables reserved total
Clubs/units unable to commit to participating at that time: 30
Most common reasons:
Too few members
Age of membership in group, with most members not able to set up, work at the event and take down
No members/ladies to create crafts
Climbing number of COVID cases in the Sacramento area
Concerned about COVID restrictions and public interaction
With the unpredictable COVID situation, the uncertainty of many members and ladies about working at an
event open to the public and possibly being exposed to the original and/or variants of the COVID virus, but
mainly due to the extremely low number of participating units and clubs, the success of the annual holiday
craft faire was determined to be very unlikely. As unfortunate as it is, with the need to maintain fiscally
responsibility while doing our best to safeguard the health of our membership, a heartbreaking decision
was made.
As a result, the 2021 craft faire will not be held this year; however, I have confirmed, that the deposit will
be held for use in 2022.
With that said, it is critically important to keep in mind, the Ben Ali transportation fund has ample funding
to support the mission of transporting patients and their family members to and from the hospital and any
appointments medically necessary.
I have enjoyed being the chairperson of this event for the last several years and am sure the same support
is shown to Lady Deedie and her committee as they move forward to plan for the 2022 Holiday Craft Faire.

Hey Everyone!
Football season is here and hopefully after a week your favorite team is not the odds-on favorite to get the First Pick of the upcoming draft. If all else fails it’s a good excuse to have nachos, hot dogs and other foods guaranteed to keep your cardiologist in business.
I was hoping to talk nonstop about how great the Nevada City Parade was. Unfortunately, as many of you know it was cancelled, because the Nevada City Counsel would not issue the permit for public health reasons. I want to thank everyone who responded to my endless phone calls, e-mails, and public pleas to get ready for the parade.
Our next parade is the Folsom Veterans Day Parade to take place on Thursday, November 11, 2021, in (you guessed it) Folsom. This is a great parade, that winds through Folsom ending in downtown. This is a Command Parade which means that the Potentate, the Illustrious Bill Wells, and the rest of the Divan would like to have all the clubs and units participate to show the variety of ways that the Shrine offers fun and helps our children.
Each Club or Unit shows a different way that a Noble can be involved in the Shrine and have some fun. There truly is something for everyone! Parades are also one of the best marketing tools we have as an organization.
This parade is still on the Folsom City Calendar so as of now it is set to go. I will monitor the status of the parade and as it opens for registration, I will register the Shrine to participate. I will also keep the Clubs and Units posted as to the status of the parade. Clubs and Units expect my attempts to contact you to secure your appearance coming in October.
Clubs and Units start making your plans as the date is coming up fast! The parade will be here before you know it so start making your plans today! Questions? Want to know more? Feel free to get in touch! The Divan is here to help.
We’ll see you in Folsom!
