HEALTHY MINDS START AT YOUR LIBRARY

ANDREA BERSTLER | Wicomico Public Libraries Executive Director

Thoughts from our Director

THE IMPACT OF A PUBLIC LIBRARY

It is important to remember that a library has a very positive impact on both the quality of life and the economy of a Downtown. This is true for almost all urban libraries. A recent study done for the Philadelphia Free Library showed that homes within a quarter-mile of a library had an average increase in value of 7.7 percent or $9,600, due simply to location.

That meant that the city of Philadelphia collected $18.5 million in additional property taxes from homes close to libraries. That is income that Philadelphia would have lost without the library.

Wicomico Public Libraries bring a lot of positives to Downtown Salisbury. It provides free educational workshops, open computer and internet access, business and nonprofit support, accessible meeting spaces, as well as over $24,000,000 in annual economic impact.

This library brings a positive influx of resources, services and activities and a return on investment of $10.50 for every $1 invested in our organization. Join us in sharing this information, libraries are alive, thriving & necessary to communities.

Andrea Berstler, Executive Director

Continuing Education Courses at Wor-Wic Community College

The continuing education and workforce development division of Wor-Wic Community College offers courses in adult basic education, business and leadership, child care, computers and technology, floristry and landscaping, health and safety, hospitality and culinary, industry, trades and manufacturing, personal enrichment, real estate and transportation.

New continuing education courses being offered this fall include “Holiday Pies and Tarts,” “Stained Glass,” “Poplar Hill Mansion – Legends and Spirit History,” “Beginning Mountain Dulcimer,” “Modern Age Astronomy” and “Fall Seasonal Eating and Storage.” Free tuition is available for senior citizens, and a special “seniors only” group of computer classes are offered.

Businesses can take advantage of customized contract training offered by the college. Popular topics include computers and technology, supervision, leadership and customer service, basic first aid and CPR. Training can be delivered at the client site or at Wor-Wic.

Customized instruction can also accommodate a variety of industry-specific trainings, certifications and continuing education requirements such as Command Spanish. For more information or a continuing education class schedule, visit www.worwic.edu or call (410) 334-2815. Class schedules are also available at the library -- downtown or at the Centre branch.

Q & A with Dr. Margo Handy Dr. Margo Handy, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Student Services, (a graduate of James M. Bennett High) works with administrators, teachers, and parents throughout the school district to ensure high quality instructional and behavioral programs and practices for every student.

We are very excited for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year because of the outstanding work of our staff! We have many exciting projects and initiatives on the horizon. Some of which include the opening of our new Bennett Middle School for the upcoming school year and full day pre-kindergarten at West Salisbury and Chipman Elementary schools.

ARE THERE ANY NEW EXCITING PROJECTS COMING UP FOR WICOMICO COUNTY SCHOOLS?

HOW IMPORTANT IS EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TO LIFELONG SUCCESS?

Early Childhood Education is the foundation for a child’s future success – In order for a child to be successful he or she has to have the acquisition of language and literacy. Language and literacy transcend every content area regardless of subject. Speaking and listening is essential for every child. We need to expose them to education early to build the foundation for their success, so they begin understanding and having excitement for learning. I am so pleased with many of the Early Childhood initiatives some of which include: full day pre-kindergarten, our Wicomico Early Learning Center where our Judy Center is comprised and Imagination Library (through the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore) a program that provides each child enrolled with a free book every month from birth until his/her fifth birthday.

Page 5: Belong | Fall 2015

YOU ATTENDED OUR FRIENDS’ 2015 LIGHT OF LITERACY CEREMONY, WHO IN YOUR LIFE HAS SERVED AS A LITERACY LUMINARY?

For me it was my mother and grandfather. We didn’t have much but we were given magazines and old books. So from a very early age my mother would read to me, and write with me. This instilled in me a love for reading, a love for education and a love for doing well in school. I knew that education was the ticket to being a successful person. I also knew that when I brought home good grades that it made my mother and grandfather happy and I always wanted to see them happy. They were my luminaries because they always pushed me, had high expectations of me and always wanted me to do well. I owe who I am to them.

IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU SEE WICOMICO PUBLIC LIBRARIES SUPPORTING YOUR STUDENTS?

The library is truly invaluable to our students. I see it as the center hub in the community in terms of enhancing literacy and appreciation for reading and research. It helps to supplement what we are teaching in the classroom and reinforces a love for reading, speaking, thinking and creating. Many times students are given assignments that require them to go beyond the walls of the school into the public library to obtain additional information. The library staff is exceptional for providing the necessary guidance for our students. I must say that Wicomico Public Libraries is a strong partner with Wicomico Public Schools and we appreciate the special summer programs and activities that it provides throughout the school year. I’d like to say that the public library is the Taj Mahal in the community because it truly enhances and advances its citizenry to be literate.
