A Favorite Fall FruitOne of the oldest known fruits,

the pomegranate has beencultivated for more than 8,000years. The bright red fruit is nativeto Iran and Turkey and has beenfeatured in the mythology, art andliterature of many cultures, oftenas a symbol of health and eternallife.

The name of the fruit derivesfrom the Middle French pomegarnete, which means “seededapple.”

The pomegranate is widelygrown in Korea and Japan, whereit is often used for bonsai becauseof the plant’s colorful flowers andthe unusual twisted bark of oldertrees. Pomegranate trees can livemore than 100 years.

In some cultures, thepomegranate was used more fordecoration than for food. It alsowas a favorite subject of modernartists, appearing in works by PaulCézanne, Salvador Dalí, HenriMatisse and Pablo Picasso.

Late autumn is harvest time forpomegranates, which have atough outer layer but are filledwith crunchy, juicy seeds. Thejuice and the seeds, called arils, are the only edible parts.

Pomegranate seeds are high invitamin C, vitamin K, folate, fiberand several minerals. They alsocontain beneficial antioxidantsand are believed to reduce jointinflammation, lower bloodpressure and improve blood flow.

NEIGHBORHOODThis month, our Neighborhood

residents celebrated Veterans Dayin a big way by attending theVeterans Day assembly at LakeTravis High School. The schoolwas more than happy toaccommodate our residents in thefront row, and each residentreceived a friendly hello from theLakeway police department. Thiswas a meaningful trip for ourresidents because many of theladies had spouses who were inthe service. Our very own SidneyTitus is a veteran who wasrecognized with a standingovation during the program. Wealso recently increased thenumber of “outings” ourNeighborhood residents enjoyeach month. Their appreciationshows with each smile and thankyou. We tend to focus onstimulating activities within ourBelmont Village neighborhoodbut also venture further to enjoyseasonal events. Family membersare always welcome to joinour fun.

Circle of Friends

We celebrated this month ofthanks by sharing our memoriesin photos and stories with eachother. Residents brought itemssuch as photo albums, militaryscrapbooks, uniforms, and othernostalgic mementos. Veterans Daywas treated with much reverenceand appreciation for those whoserved our country, as many inour Circle are Veterans or wives ofVeterans. Baskets of red poppieswere made and distributed to allat Belmont’s Veterans Dayprogram.

“Santa’s Helpers” are hard atwork preparing for the holidayseason! Due in part to a generousdonation by a Belmont Villageresident, we were able to goshopping for gifts to send to ouradopted soldier in South Korea. We have also been busy in ourCircle of Friends “workshop”building footstools and art easels,as well as creating originalartwork, beaded napkin holders, holiday gifts and ornaments. Oursenses will delight as the soundsand smells of the holiday will bedrifting out of the 3rd floormeeting room all month as wesing, bake and decorate! Happyholidays to all from the Circleof Friends!

NURSES’ CORNER

Urinary Tract Infectionsin the Elderly

Did you know that urinarytract infections differ greatly inthe younger community versusthe elderly? A 35-year old mayexperience painful burningexperiences when urinatingwhereas the elderly might nothave pain nor discomfort. Asone ages, your immuneresponses change. Commonsigns to look for in the elderlythat relate to infection is asudden onset of urinaryincontinence, falling, confusion,or not being able to performdaily tasks (feeding, dressing, bathing) for themselves. It isvery critical that water intake, (inboth men/women), wiping fromfront to back, and showeringversus bathing is implementedas it helps prevent the UTI.
