But there was a problem…

Problem #1: Almost nobody in the city had any experience and they only had six months to train

20 people to become professional programmers and develop an App

Problem #2: They started to use traditional teaching methods

which resulted in a 40% drop out rate and only 2 people were able

to create apps.

They taught the class how to build the apps that they already had on their phone. All the same concepts were taught but only as they came up in each app. The students could immediately see if they had got it right. The results were incredible. 93% of the students were able to build their own app at the end of the class.

How did the team do?

Having just completed this course weeks before, the new Digital Pomegranate app developers entered into Hackathon YAN, a contest of programming and innovative ideas primarily sponsored by Microsoft’s Innovation Center.

The contest was hosted at new World Bank sponsored technology center. There were 60 teams from different regions across the country. The teams brought a wide range of projects, including B2B, B2C solutions, games, educational and entertainment platforms. The teams had 24 hours to develop App prototypes and pitch demo versions of their applications.

Testing out their New Skills

THEY WON!The most important factor in winning this contest was the ability translate their idea into an app in just 24 hours with LiveCode. The team took a problem that everyone understood - poor economic development of their city and showed how they could improve it. The app was called Walking Tour (for both iOS and Android) and it was aimed at giving small towns and neighborhoods of larger cities the ability to attract tourists away from the traditional destinations by creating walking tours.

Its all the more impressive when you consider the team only started coding 6 months ago and was up against 60 other teams with a wide range of experience.
