JUNE 2015 MEETING

PREVIOUS 10 JUNE 2015 THEMATIC CUP AND EVENING There were no entries for the One Page cup on Winter. The following members are going to exhibit at Capex 2015: Werner Barnard : one exhibit Reanie de Villiers : one exhibit Keanu Barnard (Junior) : one exhibit Wobbe Vegter : five exhibits Diederik Viljoen : three exhibits Tony Olckers : one exhibit Wobbe Vegter confirms that all parties have met the conditions for the resolution of the PFSA dispute. The matter is now resolved. The following member entered the Thematic cup: Rianneke Loo : Van boomstam tot dirigeerstaf Congratulations to Rianneke with her winning exhibit. Reinder Nauta displayed seven pages on Butterflies, a delightful exhibit. For the Thematic evening, Wobbe Vegter gave some background on the Thematic SA society as well as an overview of the general rules on Thematic exhibiting. The Western Cape Thematic SA members are entering a one-frame exhibit on Farm Animals. This was displayed for comments. Wobbe further displayed his IBM Thematic Open Class exhibit on A3 pages. Robert Harm showed two exhibits, sourced from the internet: An exhibit of Audi and a Belgian exhibit, Rikke Tikke Tik, wie ben ik?, about the typewriter. Comments from the floor included that Thematics is a difficult exhibition genre. Wobbe agreed, as you need to have material from before 1840 until the modern era.

FORTHCOMING 8 JULY 2015 ALL MEMBERS’ NIGHT & QUIZ This is a fun evening where members can bring along any exhibit or philatelic item to share. Robert’s Quiz will be a great preparation for the Royal’s Quiz evening in September. 12 AUGUST 2015 THEMATIC CUP & NATIONAL AND INTERCLUB EXHIBITS All members wanting to be considered for the 2- and 3-frame representative exhibits at the Interclub competition in September must please bring their exhibits along. There will probably also be a non-competitive entry - one from each society - i.e. two competitive entries and one non-competitive entry. If you have an entry, you want to show in that category at the Interclub, please bring it along as well. Similarly, all members who have entered the CAPEX 2015 National Philatelic Exhibition in October are invited to display their exhibits. This is your chance to get feedback from members and still have time to make changes if necessary. 20 AUGUST 2015 COMMITTEE MEETING : 19:00 – AT HOME OF WOBBE VEGTER, LA ROCHELLE The program for the last part of the year and planning for next year will be discussed.

9 SEPTEMBER 2015 INTERCLUB COMPETITION Our society will be the host for this year’s event. The details will be made available as soon as they have been finalized. 28 SEPTEMBER 2015 ROYAL QUIZ EVENING Diarize this date as the Royal is holding it’s annual Quiz evening. The meeting starts at 20:00.

This month the 101st Tour de France started in Leeds, England. This is the fourth time the Tour de France has stages on British soil. Various countries have issued stamps on cycling in general and the Tour de France specifically. Of course, France issued stamps on their possibly most famous sport event, for instance this stamp in 1953, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary.

In 2003, when the Tour de France celebrated its 100th anniversary many countries issued commemorative stamps. Antigua & Barbuda issued this set of three minisheets.

Belgium, as one of the top countries in cycling, issued this series of stamps in 1963. This nice strip, specifically dedicated to the Tour de France, was issued 1998 by Ireland. To date Ireland has only one Tour de France victory, with Stephen Roche in 1987.

Another big cycling country is Spain. In 2000, a set of 12 blocks was issued with famous Spaniards. One of them was Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain. Also, the Spanish territory of Ifni has issued stamps with cycling in the past.

In 1972, the Arab emirate of Manama issued this Tour de France minisheet.

In 1973 a series of stamps with famous cyclists participating in the Tour de France was issued by Equatorial Guinea. In 1963, Monaco issued this series about the Tour de France.

One of the featured people on this Belgian sheet “The 20th century in stamps” is Eddy Merckx, five times winner of the Tour de France. Luxemburg might be a small country, but in the Tour de France they always have some riders representing the nation. In 1989 the Grand Départ was in Luxemburg, and a commemorative stamp was issued.
