Die 18-jarige kankerlyer Gesie Theron sepa het verlede jaar haar skoolwerk virhaar herhaaldelik gelees. En sy het ge-luister en onthou. Só goed het sy dít ge-doen dat dié slimkop van die HoërskoolD.F. Malan drie onderskeidings in die ma-triekeindeksamen behaal het.

Gesie, wat byna heeltemal blind is, is ver-heug oor haar A’s in besigheidstudies, Afri-kaans en lewensoriëntering, maar wou baiegraag ook ’n onderskeiding behaal in ekono-mie, wat sy met een persent misgeloop het.

Dié vak en wiskunde, wat sy as haar gun-stelingvak beskryf, laat sy nou hermerk.

“Ek kry gewoonlik diep in die tagtigs virwiskunde, maar het in die eindeksamen 76%verwerf,” sê Gesie.

In ekonomie kort sy slegs een persent vir’n onderskeiding.

Gesie sê haar goeie uitslae is te danke aanharde werk. Deur die loop van die jaar hetsy hard gewerk en in die eindeksamen het sytussen vier dae en ’n week aan ’n vak geleer.

Haar pa het by tye verlof geneem om diewerk vir Gesie te lees, of andersins het hyvroegmiddag van die werk af gekom en saammet Gesie agter die boeke ingeskuif en terwylhy lees, het Gesie onthou.

Gesie is in 2003, toe sy in graad vier was,met kanker gediagnoseer. Op nege het diédapper meisie ’n breinoperasie van agt uurondergaan om ’n kwaadaardige gewas te ver-wyder. Dít het Gesie byna blind gelaat.

“Ek het baie geleer en nie baie uitgegaannie,” vertel sy by haar ouerhuis in Oakglen.

Gesie is een van ’n tweeling en haar suster,Martie, het ses onderskeidings behaal.

Saam het die twee in die eindeksamen wis-kunde- en taalvraestelle uitgewerk. “Dié ma-triekskryf was ’n spanpoging tussen my, mypa en Martie,” vertel Gesie.

In die afgelope jare het TygerBurger ver-skeiekereoorGesie berig – toe syopnegejari-ge ouderdom ’n breinoperasie ondergaan hetom ’n kwaadaardige gewas te verwyder, toesy hoërskool toe is, toe haar lewensverhaalin ’n handboek vir graad agt-leerlinge opge-neem is, toe sy Ryk Neethling, een van haarhelde, ontmoet het en meer onlangs, toe 600

ballonne op haar skool se sportveld vir haarlosgelaat is.

Gesie se skoolhoof, Joh Dorfling, sê Gesiewas party dae asvaal weens die chemoterapiewat sy deurlopend ontvang het, maar sê syis ’n klein vasbytertjie.

Joh sê Gesie moes soms tot in die eksamenchemoterapie ontvang.

“Ons is baie bly vir Gesie se onthalwe enons is baie trots op haar,” sê Joh.

Syhet reeds ’n rits plannevir 2012. “Myeer-ste droom is om vanjaar vir my tannie in Ne-derland te gaan kuier,” sê Gesie. Dan wil syook die inkleurboek wat sy ’n paar jaar gele-de self ontwerp het, by kleuterskole en laer-skole bemark.

Dié boek het sy opgevolg met ’n tweedeboek, wat sy ’n besighou-boek noem. Daarinis haar eie ontwerpe van kopkrappers soosblokkiesraaisels, woordlegkaarte en ver-bind-die-kolletjies.

“Ek sal dié boek graag wil ontwikkel vir’n spesiale mark, soos disleksie-lyers,” sê Ge-sie.

WanneerGesie enhaarpanie agterdieboe-ke inskuif nie, of sy boeke ontwerp nie, luis-ter sy televisie of oudioboeke en kyk sy graagkrieket.

“Ek is mal oor krieket – ek was Vrydag opNuweland en toe wen ons!” vertel sy opge-wonde.

Die oudioboeke laai haarbroer, Petrus (24),vir haar van die internet op haar rekenaaraf. Behalwe Petrus en Martie het Gesie nóg’n broer, Louis (22).

Noudat die eindeksamen agter die rug is,beplan sy ’n klomp dinge. Vir eers geniet sydit om laat te slaap en dan wil sy ook tydmaak vir wipwaentjieritte (roller coaster ri-des), een van haar gunsteling-tydverdrywe,en dan natuurlik om toetskrieket te kyk. “Ekis mal daaroor om die wind in my hare tevoel! My hare groei nou weer (ná die chemo-terapie), so ek voel dit nou baie meer!” vertelsy opgewonde.

Gesie wil ook weer gaan valskermspring.Sy het dié aktiwiteit in 2008 in Robertson op11 000 voet beproef en wil weer so maak.

Dan is daar ook die groot droom om vir ABde Villiers te ontmoet. Wie weet, met Gesiese deursettingsvermoë en sterk wil is van-jaar dalk die jaar...

Foundation Maths Wiskunde-klasse vir Graad 1, 2 en3 leerders is nou in die Noordelike Voorstedebeskikbaar.

Die klasse vind na skool plaas in 'n ontspanneatmosfeer en het ten doel om 'n liefde vir Wiskunde teontwikkel by grondslagfase leerders.

Sommige kinders het 'n natuurlike aanleg vir Wiskunde.Die ekstra stimulering wat Foundation Maths vir hullebied, verseker hulle van 'n vroeë Wiskunde-voorsprong. Hulle ontwikkel gewoonlik in regteuitblinkers as gevolg van die stimulering.

By ander kinders ontbreek 'n natuurlike aanleg virWiskunde. Baie van hulle ondervind probleme metWiskunde in hulle latere skoolloopbane indien hulle nie'n stewige Wiskunde-grondslag het nie. By hulle wordklem gelê op die stewige vaslegging van die basiesebeginsels van Wiskunde.

Kinders vaar beter in Wiskunde indien hulle ouersbetrokke is. Gevolglik word ouers ook van praktiesewenke voorsien oor hoe om hulle kinders te help metWiskunde.

Nimb sê van die misdade wat dieafgelope feestyd op die polisie se ho-eprioriteitslys was, is diefstal uitvoertuie die grootste kopseer.

Sy sê ruitvensters word selfsstukkend geslaan vir items soos ’nbaadjie, sonbril, ’n ID-boek, selfone,bosse sleutels of aktetasse. “Enig-iets wat die motordief sien, sal hysteel,” sê Nimb.

“Die lede het gefokus op die pa-trollering en bekamping van inbra-ke by huise en sake-ondernemings,

diefstal uit en van motors en rowevan enige aard,” sê Nimb.

Sy sê om oortreders in diefstal uitmotorvoertuie vas te trek is ’nmoeilike taak en dikwels word diésake aangemeld slegs vir verseke-ringsdoeleindes.

Die polisie doen egter ’n beroepop slagoffers om hul motors te neemsodat vingerafdrukke geneem kanword. Om die rompslomp vir slagof-fers te verminder kan dié vingeraf-drukke nou by die Bellville-polisie-stasie gedoen word.

Nimb versoek slagoffers om dievingerafdrukke so min moontlik teversteur. “Plekke waar dit nie no-dig is om aan te raak terwyl jy be-stuur nie, soos die truspieëltjie, kangebruik word om vingerafdrukke tekry,” sê sy.

Nóg ’n aspek waaraan ernstigeaandag geskenk sal word, sê Nimb,ismensewatkansevatmet verseke-ringseise.

Pa en seuns pak avontuurrit saam aan’n Eversdal-pa en sy drie seunshet onlangs die Trans Agulhas-uitdaging vir rubberbote aange-pak – ’n ervaring wat hulle as on-vergeetlik beskryf.

Christie Kriel en sy seun, Christi-an (20), het die uitdaging saam aan-gedurf, terwyl nóg twee van syseuns, Wardo (18) en Marco (16), diewater saam-saam op ’n rubberbootgetrotseer het.

Dié vier Kriel-mans het aan dieuitdaging deelgeneem onder die

naam van die Welverdiend-aftree-oord, ’n oord in Bellville wat on-langs sy deure geopen het.

Dirk Streicher, ontwikkelaar vandie oord, het die twee bote geborg.

Vanjaar was die 16de keer watChristie aan die Trans Agulhas-uit-daging deelgeneem het.

Dirk sê inwoners van die aftree-oord was ongelooflik opgewondeoor die uitdaging wat die pa enseuns aangepak het.

Die Kriels en inwoners van die af-tree-oord het mekaar kort voor die

uitdaging ontmoet, toe die pa enseuns ’n draai gemaak het by die af-tree-oord waar die bote met grootbelangstelling ondersoek is.

Die Kriels self was opgewonde,maar ook ’n bietjie bekommerd oordie watertoestande.

“Ons het vooraf gewonder of diewater baie rof gaan wees. Dit wastoe die geval, maar toe ons eers be-gin was alles reg,” sê Christie.

“Jy weet die water is rof en jygáán seerkry,” sê Wardo. Christi-aan voeg by: “Dit is soos voor ’n rug-

bywedstryd – al weet jy jy is goedvoorbereid, is jy steeds senuweeag-tig.”

Vir Marco, die jongste, was diéuitdaging ’n eerste, maar Christianen Wardo het al in die verlede saammet hul pa deelgeneem.

Vooraf het die vierstuks intensiefvoorberei, want dit is belangrik om“bootfiks” te wees, sê Christie.

Twee maande voor die uitdaginghet hulle elke naweek drie ure inMelkbos gaan oefen en hulle laasteoefenlopie was in Franskraal, waardie laaste skof van die uitdagingplaasgevind het.

Christie se vrou, Tania, en die eg-paar se twee jongste seuns, Rudi enTerblanche, was deel van die onder-steuningspan op land.

Op die vierde dag van die vyfdag-

uitdaging het Christie en Marco seboot probleme gegee, toe die enjinse hegstukke onklaar geraak het. Indaardie stadium was hulle tweedein hul klas.

Christie sê hy was nog al die jarelief vir die see.

“Jare gelede het ek en ’n vriendsaam aan dié uitdaging deelge-neem, maar toe my kinders ouerword het ek saam met hulle beginry,” sê hy.

Dirk sê die opgewondenheid bydie aftree-oord, voor die uitdaging,was tasbaar.

“Die inwoners het gereeld gebelom te hoor wat by die uitdaging ge-beur,” sê hy.

“Dalk skryf ons volgende jaar ’nspan van die aftree-oord in,” lagChristie.

As daar een plek is waar ’n voetoorgangsoos die spreekwoordelike stopstraat ge-ignoreer word, is dit die sebrastrepe tus-sen die Santamgebou en die Tygervallei-sentrum.

Gerrit de Lange, ’n Kenridge-inwoner, iseen van die wetsgehoorsame motoriste watby dié stopstraat stop, maar dit blyk dat diémotoriste in die minderheid is.

“Daar is al vir jare duidelike voetoorgang-strepe op die pad tussen die Santamgebou endie Tygervalleisentrum. Soos ek dit verstaanis dit juis om aan voetgangers ’n geleentheidte gee om veilig oor ’n baie besige pad te stap.Dikwels moet voetgangers wat die kruisingwil oorsteek egter hul lewens waag om tus-sen jaende motors oor te hardloop. Dít is om-dat geen motors stilhou voor die strepe nie,al sien hulle die persone aan die kant staanen wag.”

Gerrit sê wanneer hy stilhou jaag anderverby of skel hom. “Ek hou dikwels asem opvir die veiligheid van die voetgangers. Hetdie voetgangers nie die reg om veilig oor testap op die strepe wat daarvoor aangebringis nie? Is motoriste nie veronderstel om aanhulle die geleentheid te gee nie?” vra hy.

Hy vra of ’n voetganger deur ’n selfsugtigemotoris doodgerymoetwordvoordaar indiéverband opgetree word.

In reaksie sê Maxine Jordaan, waarne-mende hoofinspekteur: verkeersdienste indie media-afdeling, voetgangers geniet dievoorang by ’n ongekontroleerde voetoor-gang.

“Daar word van motoriste verwag om testop en voorrang te gee aan voetgangers watdie pad wil oorsteek,” sê sy.

Sy sê motoriste kan met R500 beboet wordindien hulle versuim om voetgangers voor-rang te gee wanneer hul die pad wil oorsteek.

Gerrit sê die Bellville-verkeersdeparte-

ment sal duisende kan invorder by dié krui-sing.

“Persone wat aan Santam se kant werk ensmiddae oorstap na Tygervalleisentrum selewensworddaagliksbedreigdeuronbeskof-te en selfsugtige motoriste,” sê hy.

Gerrit sê dié pad word al besiger en moto-riste jaag dikwels teen hoë spoed in die padaf.

Volgens Maxine sal dié kwessie onder dieBellville-verkeersdepartement se aandag virpolisiëring gebring word.

Die belangrike ding isegter dat ons ‘n keuse het. Elkemens is geskape met ’n vrye keuse.Ons kan kies hoe ons die jaar wilaanpak: met ’n negatiewe of met ’npositiewe gesindheid.

Dit is maklik om te sê dat jy posi-tief moet wees, maar hoe doen ’nmens dit? Daar is baie manierehoe jy dit kan doen. Hier aan diebegin van die jaar wil ek net vierpraktiese riglyne vir jou gee hoeom positief in 2012 te wees:

. Leef elke oomblik met volledankbaarheid. Die kunstenaarHenri Matisse het gesê: “Daar isaltyd blomme vir diegene wat ditgraagwil sien.”Al sal dit partydae

moeilik gaan, moetjy steeds die mooien goeie dinge in joulewe raaksien enwaardeer.

. Leef gesond. Oe-fen en eet reg enhandhaaf gesondegewoontes.

. Leer om te gee. Verander van“ek wil hê” na “ek wil gee”.

’n Mens moet egter ook realis-ties wees. Daar sal in hierdie jaarook negatiewe dinge en teleurstel-lings oor ons pad kom. Hoe moet

jy hierdie negatie-we dinge en teleur-stellings hanteerwanneer jy daar-mee gekonfronteerword?

Dis belangrik omte onthou dat die le-we aan ’n mens met’n hand met kaarteuitgedeel word. Dithelp nie om daar-oor te kla nie en temor waarom dit ofdat met jou moesgebeur het nie. Jymoet speel met die

kaarte in jou hand. Aanvaar diekaarte en doen die beste met ditwat aan jou uitgedeel is. Wees rea-listies en weet slegte dinge kan ge-beur. Jy is nie onaantasbaar teendie aanslae van die lewe nie. Jy is

kwesbaar en sal in hierdie lewe te-leurstellings ervaar, soos enigeander mens. Hier is vier praktiesedinge wat jy kan doen om teleur-stellings in 2012 te hanteer:

. Gee jouself tyd en ruimte omdeur jou teleurstelling te werk.

. Gesels met mense om perspek-tief op die saak te kry.

. Jy kan in skuldgevoelens enin selfverwyt verval. Klim vinnigdaaruit. Sit dit agter jou. Onthouegter altyd die les wat jy geleer het.

. Onthou: wanneer een deurtoegaan, kan ’n tweede oopgaanwat veel beter geleenthede aan joubied. Moenie te lank in sak en assit nie, want dan kan ’n nuwe ge-leentheid by jou verbygaan.

Depot fire damagedelays refuse serviceResidents are requested to leave their binsout until their refuse has been collected, asa backlog is being experienced following afire at the Sacks Circle depot early in Janu-ary.

The City of Cape Town’s solid waste man-agement department has implemented con-tingency plans following a fire on 5 January.

The fire affected seven refuse compactortrucks which were parked at the depot, fiveof which are considered irreparable. The de-pot has been temporarily closed while thecause of the fire is investigated.

Only the electrical supply to the depot wasdamaged and not the building. Compactortrucks that were parked in the shaded park-ing area were also damaged in the fire.

The temporary closure of the depot anddamage to the trucks will impact on the sol-id waste management department’s abilityto render an uninterrupted service in Glen

Haven, Bellville CBD, Transnet, BellvilleSouth Industria, Durbanville Hills, Durbell,Kenridge, Vygieboom, Sonstraal, AmandaGlen and Skoongesig.

The department’s contingency plan is al-ready in place in order to minimise the ex-tent of the interruption to refuse removalservices in the affected areas.

“We are hiring additional vehicles, whilewe are also ‘borrowing’ vehicles from otherdepots,” said Councillor Shehaam Sims,mayoral committee member. She said thevehicles will be replaced as soon as the in-surance claim has been settled.

Summer is known for sunny daysand fun at the beach, but accordingto the Western Cape health depart-ment, diarrhoea is very prevalentfor at this time.

According to Dr Ivan Bromfield, ex-ecutive director at the department ofhealth, children under the age of fiveare particularly vulnerable to diar-rhoea.

Dehydration can happen very quick-ly and carry serious consequences in-cluding death in some cases.

It is noted that this disease flourishesin areas of poor sanitation as well ascontaminated water and food.

Even though contaminated food andwater are the most common ways ofgetting diarrhoea, there are also moreways of becoming contaminated orspreading it.

Touching contaminated areas suchas tables, toys or even thehandof some-one who is infected can cause thespread of the disease.

“November to May is usually knownas the diarrhoea season.

“The season is the result of warmerweather conditions which are favoura-ble for the overbreeding of viruses,bacteria, toxins and other pathologicalagents that affect the gut.

“Much diarrhoea is basically the re-sult of oral-faecal contamination,” saidBromfield.

A few signs to look out for if you sus-pect your child has diarrhoea are vom-iting, a runny tummy, a fever or vomit-ing which leads to dehydration or aloss of appetite.

In infants, an additional sign to lookout for is if your child refuses to breast-feed.

In cases such as this, the Salt-SugarSolution (SSS) is recommended: make

a mixture of one litre of clean water,eight teaspoons of sugar and half a tea-spoon of salt.

This should be given to the child reg-ularly but if the symptoms persist, thechild should be taken to the nearestclinic immediately.

If a child suffering from severe symp-toms is treated early enough and givenproper care, they can recover within afew days.

. Keeping your hands clean is oneof the most important steps in stoppingthe spread or contracting the disease inthe first place.

When washing your hands, use soapand clean water and wash for at least20 seconds.

. Make sure you kill harmful bacte-ria by cooking food to the proper inter-nal temperature.

. Use refrigerated leftovers as soonas possible, an ideal period is betweentwo to three days.

“Remember not to brake,”says a friend before he accel-erates innocently down theCool Runnings Toboggancourse in Durbanville.

As per instruction, this inex-perienced tobogganist leans in-to the first turn with surprisingease.

“This isn’t so difficult,”laughs the rookie as he foolish-ly tempts fate.

He shoots through the secondturn at 30km/h, but he is con-vinced that he is about to breakthe sound barrier.

When he reaches 40km/h italmost feels like he’s travellingback in time it’s so quick.

He might have applied thebrakes a couple of times, but henonetheless feels likehe just seta land speed record.

His friend,who started 10 sec-onds before him, just shook hishead while he waited patientlyat the bottom for the tardy to-bogganist.

Almost anyone can tobogganat their own pace, but the realrush comes from pushing theenvelope.

Arnold laughs shyly when hehears the others say that he’sthe quickest.

“Momentum is important,but one should also lean for-ward and resist the urge tobrake,” continues Arnold.

Richard, Kyle, Arnold haveall had bruising experiences intheir pursuit of perfection, so itwas not surprising when Ta-

wanda Bundu and Michael Pie-tersen also recounted their ownclose encounters.

Michael is apparently the“King of Crashes”.

He explains with analyticalcertainty, “It obviously de-pends on how you land, but youmust remember that you’resliding, so you must continueyour slide when you fall off.Keep your arms and legs closeto your body!”

Owner Frank Unger saysthey get 400 000 visitors andprobably see 1,5 million ridesannually.

“Now that there is 300 per-cent more shade for the peoplethey can really enjoy the expe-rience,” he says before conclud-ing that their main aim is togive customers value for theirmoney – whether it’s servingfood or appeasing adrenalinejunkies.

It is a sport for both begin-ners and professionals, somake a point of testing yourmettle on the metal track if youcan spare R30.

Voorlopige resultate van die Eksa-menraad vir Christelike Onderwys(ERCO), toon dat ongeveer 500 bonafide-tuisleerders die eksamen ge-skryf het en ’n slaagsyfer van onge-veer 93% behaal het. Van die kandi-date wat geslaag het, het ongeveer63% met universiteitsvrystelling ge-slaag.

wyskonsultant wat in tuisonderwysspesialiseer, sê dat die uitstekendeakademiese, sosiale en persoonlikeontwikkeling van tuisleerders inSuid-Afrika ooreenstem met resulta-te wat tuisleerders in ander landeverkry volgens onafhanklike navor-sing oor verskeie dekades.

Hy het egter daarop gewys dathierdie kandidate vele burokratiesestruikelblokke moes oorkom net omdie eksamen enigsins te skryf. VanOostrum voer aan dat die nuwe nasi-onale senior sertifikaat ontwerp is

om voltydse leerders in skole te be-voordeel. Die aard van die eksamenmaak dit baie duur en amper on-moontlik vir onafhanklike en af-standleerders om te voldoen aan dieburokratiese eise wat die nuwe eksa-men stel. Daarbenewens aanvaar dieeksamenrade van staatsdepartemen-te nie meer onafhanklike kandidatetensy hulle onder die mantel van sko-le ingesmokkel word nie.

Dit beteken dat die matrieksertifi-kaat, wat tot vyf jaar gelede vir somin as R1 000 geskryf kon word, nou

ten minste R30 000 kos. Een van diegevolge is dat die getal onafhanklikekandidate gedaal het van ongeveer15 000 per jaar na ongeveer 1 000.

Matrics do well,but the future?The Western Cape matric class of 2011 hasdone us proud. The province not onlyachieved the best matric pass rate in thecountry, SouthAfrica’s topmatriculant al-so hails from this province.

Kudos too to the Western Cape educa-tion minister, the education departmentand all the other role players who contrib-uted to the province improving its 2010pass rate of 76,8 percent to 82,9 percent.

Another group of people that deserves amention in this success story is the par-ents. Despite the fact that many of themstruggled financially, they still supportedtheir children emotionally and financial-ly. They were willing to make sacrifices inorder to enrol their children at schoolswith a good academic record. Many ofthem spent hundreds of rands each monthon extra classes.

The challenge is now to get all schools,even those in impoverished areas, to pro-duce the same results.

The department of basic education’s de-cision to restrict Model C schools frompaying teacher bonuses and other finan-cial incentives will further weaken the al-ready struggling public education system.

It would be no surprise if some of theseteachers leave the public schools to jointhe private schools where they’ll at leastreceive the recognition – and pay – theydeserve.

Blaf-Blaf, jy het beslis nie my brief reggelees nie. Jy het jou eie sarkastiese aflei-ding gemaak. Waarom reageer jy so he-wig? Staan jy dalk self agter die deur? Ekhet al baie diere in my lewe gehad, ookhonde. Ek dink egter dat, om ’n hond, ofmeer as een, in ’n piepklein agterplasieaan te hou, geen ware diereliefde is nie.

Jy het beslis die kat aan die stert beet.Ek het nog nooit in my lewe 15 mense bywetstoepassing aangegee nie. Ja, ek hetwel al een aangekla, ’n saak wat in die hofgaan draai het, en dié persoon in die pro-ses sleg tweede gekom het – dit was in diedae toe wetstoepassers nog hul naamwerd was.

As jy dan só goed weet van die soge-naamde 15 persone wat ek sou verkla het,weet jy ook mos wie die skuldiges is. Wil

julle dan nie maar saamgesels en probeerom julle buurt meer honde- en bure-vrien-delik te maak nie? Om lief te wees vir ’nhond beteken nie noodwendig dat jydie hond se geblaf net moet aanvaarnie. Duisende bure (kinders inge-sluit) sit vandag met ’n buurman sehond wat hulle mal blaf, lees maarnet die verskillende koerante.

Ek het presies dieselfde pro-bleem. Dertien honde in my onmid-dellike omgewing (waarvan slegseen myne is), en slegs my buurmanagter se Dobermann, is ’n pro-bleemhond. Die ander eienaars geeom vir hul honde en tree op wan-neer nodig en gee die nodige oplei-ding. Dat daar ’n probleem moetwees wanneer ’n hond blaf is ooknie noodwendig die waarheid nie.Sommige honde blaf vir geen rede,sommer vir wind of voëls.

Mense wat werklik omgee vir hulhonde (en bure) en die nodige ken-nis het van hoe om ’n hond te han-teer, het nie die probleem nie. Daar-die honde blaf net wanneer dit no-dig is. Woon langs ’n buurman met’n probleemhond wat vir net sowatses minute in ’n uur nie blaf nie, enkyk of jy nog Blaf-Blaf van Bracken-fell wil wees.

Look before breedingThe article “Euthanasia in spotlight” (Tyger-Burger, 21 December) refers. It is a brilliantidea to make people aware of the unbelieva-bly huge problem we have with “homeless”animals.

The reply from Rene from AACL wasshocking. So what if people get “angry”knowing the figures! It’s about the animals.No, it won’t solve the problem but it willmake it better by preventing some peoplefrom deciding to breed (which is the causeof the problem in the first place).

I volunteered at a shelter for years. It didupsetmewhenananimal got euthanised, butbecause I was aware of this problem, I under-stood and did not judge the shelter. It is bet-ter than to let animals suffer in the street be-cause we are running out of places for them.

Before you decide to breed your animal, doyourself a favour and see how many of thosespecific animals are already in the shelters.You’ll be shocked. There are even rescue“groups” for specific breeds. (eg: border col-lie rescue and many many more). Ratheradopt an animal from these places than froma breeder or someone’s house, encouragingthem to breed further.

Also do your research on the type of dogthat you are interested in, to make sure thathe is the best option for you and that you cansupply him with what his specific breed re-quires. So called “pavement specials” arestill the best breeds with the least health is-sues.

Compost still the bestJILL PEPER

Compost is not something thatcomes up generally in normalconversation – apart from as afour-letter word! At StanlerFarms, the home of Super Growfertiliser, however – “composthappens”!

Here it is spoken of with convic-tion and passion. In a world of sani-tised soaps and cleaners (as adver-tised extensively on TV), bacteriahave received a bad rap. Bill Brys-on, however, in “A Short History ofNearly Everything” speaks aboutthe essential role that bacteria playin sustaining life on earth.

In the words of Peter Stanton, theCEO of this nationwide business –“Here we actually sell bacteria and

fungi” – and sports fields, schools,golf courses, farms and gardens arethe richer for it!

Stanler Farms came about as a re-sult of the largest mushroom pro-ducers in South Africa needing anoutlet for their spent compost.

This does not apply only to vege-table gardens, where beautiful or-ganic products will result, but it isalso vital throughout the garden.

Previously it was believed thatcompost should be tilled into theground in order to be the most effec-tive.

The latest thinking around theworld is to use compost as mulch ontop of the soil, which allows the mi-cro-organisms to seep into theground when watered.

Not all rockers are ‘dark characters’LOUISA STEYL

“Our music will be listenable fora long time.”

So says Adam van der Reit,rhythm guitarist, songwriter andengineer for The Summer Under-ground.

With a new lead vocalist in War-ren Alexander, and guitarist, LukeRevington, added to the mix, thisNorthern Suburbs band has under-gone a transformation of sorts.

The rest of The Summer Under-ground is made up of Adrian Lan-geveld on drums, percussion andkeyboards, Brett Reynolds on bassand Sean Schwartz as sound engi-neer.

The band has been playing withthe current line-up for a year, butThe Summer Underground hasbeen around since 2009.

Adam explains that he was of-fered an opportunity to write some

songs for payment, so he put a bandtogether to play the songs.

“It started as a professional stu-dio project that took on a life of itsown,” Adam says.

The band believes that a goodname is essential.

Brett explains that The SummerUndergroundrefers to “the title giv-en to thenotionof not enjoying lightand heat”.

“It was a quip that the previousvocalist came up with,” he says.

The name plays on the stereotypeof “rockers” being dark charactersand as Adam points out: “It doesn’tsound like a normal band name.”

“It’s hard rock ’n roll,” Warrensays of their music.

“It’s ‘kinda’ like the 90s heyday,”Adrian adds.

He says when Warren and Luke

joined the band, they also reinvig-orated it. “Very quickly it gelledvery nicely,” Adrian says.

Adam points out that some songshad to be rewritten to suit male vo-cals instead of their usual femalevocalist.

“It was a rebirth of sorts,” hesays.

Thebandagrees that therewasal-so a new enthusiasm in the group.

“Overall we are a more organisedunit,” Brett states. Before, therewere questions within the groupabout commitment to the band, butBrett says: “The current line-up ischanging all of that.”

The band’s performance at Rockthe River over New Year’s was fullof this new energy.

The band has just finished re-cording their EP, and they have anew album in the works.

“Adam is the band’s primarysongwriter,” Adrian says.

He comes up with the music anddigital phrases, before the songs arehammered into shape, knitting inthe drum line and bass.

With influences that range fromearly rock pioneers, like Black Sab-bath, to the other extreme, like 80sand electronic music, you can ex-pect interesting sounds from thisband.

Race brings in funds for ShilohLocal charity organisation ShilohSynergy was the beneficiary ofGrowthpoint Properties’ Sun-downer 10km walk/run that tookplace along one of South Africa’smost beautiful shorelines, start-ing and finishing at the V&A Wa-terfront recently.

A total of 2 634 participants fin-ished the race and a cheque ofR2 500 was handed over to Shiloh.

Shiloh Synergy is a group ofprojects based on Biblical princi-ples and committed towards thegenuine needs of people, animalsand the environment. Shiloh’smain concern is the upliftmentand providing assistance to chil-dren and people who are in need.

The first male home, Sityhilo Diko, finished in a time of 30:26.

Bing takes title in allaction SUPA record number of entries marked thefourth Coreban Summer Series for StandUp Paddlers (SUP), held at Bloubergstrandrecently.

The threedays of competition in the surf sla-lom, wave riding and long distance racing re-sulted in non-stop action.

This year’s event saw the largest field ofSUP entrants in Africa with over 100 entrantsranging from seven-year-old Cameron Trip-ney in the children’s division to novice menand women divisions, the highly contestedjunior division, legends (over 45) and openmen and women divisions.

The contest was held in three days of perfectweather starting with the slalom event.

A rise in swell on the second day saw organ-isers make the call for wave riding.

“The standard of SUP was pushed to a newlevel as riders displayed moves yet to benamed. The Beach Religion Expression ses-sion saw tandem riding as male with femaleriders took on the surf to display true ‘aloha’spirit,” said organiser Ivan van Vuuren.

The third and final day was quite easily themost action-packed SUP day Africa has everseen.

With the wind subsiding paddlers had toprepare for the 7,5km distance racing around

the islands at Big Bay.The start of the race saw the set of the day

come through causing many athletes to imme-diately be eliminated while top riders navigat-ed their way through the surf.

An error in judgement saw Dylan Frick,Greg Bertish and Colin Heckroodt, who whereall three in line for overall first place positionleading the pack, take the wrong course open-ing up the field and allowing Peter Petersonand others to sneak through into top position.

With long distance out of the way, it wastime for the surf slalom finals, once againthrough the larger surf. Chris Bertish, deter-mined to make up for his earlier mistake, tooktop line honours. As the swell continued topush through, the final rounds of the wave rid-ing went into full swing – Tom King-Kleinhansdisplayed true surfing while Justin Bing andDylan Frick displayed new school manoeu-vres. Justin Bing snuck in a few extra moveswinning the wave riding discipline.

In the end it was Justin Bing who walkedaway with the 2011 Men’s Open title while Ka-rina Figl, who showed top form in all three dis-ciplines, finished first overall in the Ladies’Open division.

Justin Bing won the 2011 Coreban Stand Up Paddling Summer Series that was held at BigBay in December.

An Epic battle for survivor

Ernst Viljoen will be paired with Elana Meyer during the Absa Cape Epic.

Local Bellville resident, Ernst Viljoen, iscurrently undergoing strict trainingand preparation to ride the 2012 AbsaCape Epic in celebration of his recentsuccessful recovery from prostate can-cer.

This will be his fourth entry in the annualrace in the Western Cape and he will devotehis participation to those suffering fromcancer and to raise awareness and fundingfor Cansa.

AsaTeamAbsa rider,Absawill generous-ly donate R1 300 to the organisation for eve-ry stage of the race that Viljoen completes– a potential total of R9 100 for his efforts.

“Thankfully, the disease was diagnosed atan early stage and I was able to beat the can-cer,” says Viljoen. “I am extremely thankfulthat I can get back on my bike and rideagain, and enjoy the sport which I have beendoing for most of my life. It is not somethingI take for granted.”

Viljoen has been active in the sport of cy-cling for the past 44 years and made a seri-ous conversion to mountain biking in 2006,when Absa – his then employer – became thetitle sponsor of the Absa Cape Epic. He hassince retired from his banking career of 28years and is currently a lecturer in financialmanagement at a private college in CapeTown.

Viljoen has also completed the BikeTransAlp in 2007 and has 20 Cape ArgusPick n Pay Cycle Tour rides to his name sofar.

Diagnosedwithprostate cancer inDecem-ber 2010, Viljoen opted for a brachytherapy– the implanting of radioactive seeds intothe prostate – instead of surgically remov-ing the gland. The procedure was scheduledfor April 2011 allowing him to attend hisson’s wedding and complete the 2011 AbsaCape Epic in March 2011.

Viljoen is now fully recovered from thedisease and looking ahead to the 2012 instal-ment of the world’s toughest mountain bikestage race.

This year Viljoen will be paired withTeam Absa partner and Olympic silver med-allist, Elana Meyer, and their training is al-ready well under way.

Viljoen will also serve as manager forTeam Absa. The team includes rugby legendJoel Stransky and model Vanessa Haywood.

The Absa Cape Epic will take place from25 March to 1 April.
