MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGHIt is hard to believe that we are halfway through our firsttrimester of this school year! As such, it is time to start
scheduling parent-teacher conferences. Our online schedulingwas such a success last year that we are continuing thatprocedure (and the other elementary buildings are joining us in
this process!). There is a letter in todays Friday folder with
step-by-step instructions on how to sign up, and the system isready for you to schedule your conference(s) at yourconvenience!
If your child is in fourth, fifth, or sixth grade, please be sure toregularly go to PowerSchool to check on grades. Youll be able
to see whether your child is missing any assignments and canthen help hold them accountable for turning in their work. Irecommend sitting with your child to look at his/her grades or
having your child schedule a time to look at his/her own grades
on their own; research shows that students who track their own
progress in an area are more likely to succeed.
As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss
any concerns, please contact me.

COUNSELORS CORNER
~Sandy Husted~
Cyber bullying behaviors are increasing across the World Wide Web.
As childrens computer skills begin at a younger ages, so do their
cyber bullying behaviors. Cyber-bullying is the use of Internet e-mail,
instant messaging, chat rooms, cell phones, or other forms of
information technology to deliberately and repeatedly hurt, taunt,
ridicule, threaten or intimidate someone.
Cyber bullying is when a child or group of children set out to hurtanother through words and pictures. It can take many formsemail
messages, chat room comments, Instant Messages, Web pages,
telephone calls or pictures, online discussions or blog postings, etc.
and its purpose is to make someone feel awful. Children who practice
safe use of technologies by keeping personal information private, and
ignoring the first advances of a cyber bully are far less likely to be
continuing targets of a bully. Children who are very sensitive (wear
their hearts on their sleeves) and like to confide in others online are
more likely to be targeted. Bullies love to get a reaction, and they like
to use personal "secrets" against others.
What can parents do?
1. Realize that although you can set up filters on your childrenscomputers, the very best filter is you-the parent! Make sure
your childrens computers are in places where you can see
what they are doing on them when you walk by.
2. Set up expectations for your children's use of computers, theInternet, and cell phones. Your rules should include times
when technologies may be used, and about chatting,
emailing, Instant Messaging, the giving out of personal
information, posting information online, acceptable
Websites, etc. Examples of rules might be: Never give
anyone, even someone you consider a good friend, your
username and password; use appropriate language at all
times; do not download or open files from people you don't
know (this includes people you've only met online); etc.
3. Make sure there are consequences if your children do notfollow the expectations that have been set up by your family.
4. Recognize signs that your children may be targets of a cyberbully. Your children may not want to go to school, may want
to stay home instead of interacting with others, may get upset
when using the computer, may be preoccupied with concerns
about friendships, etc. Remember that some children will feel
so embarrassed by what the cyber bully is "saying" about
them, that they will try to keep the problem to themselves. No matter whether these problems are the result of cyber
bullying or not, they are significant problems you'll want to
discuss with your children so that you can help them.
5. Recognize signs that your child may be a cyber bully. Thesemight include: getting calls from the other parents about your
children's behavior online or on the telephone; hearing your
children put down others that are not in their group; finding
that your children brag about knowing the
passwords or other personal information of others,
etc.
6. Starting when your children first use computers, telephones, and the Internet, encourage them to let
you know if anything makes them feel uneasy or
threatened. And when they come to you, keep in
mind that comments about friendships, which are
obviously disturbing to them, may seem "silly" toyou. Take their worries seriously and help them
understand how to deal with the problem.
7. If your child is a victim of a cyber bully, save allevidence of the bullying. Print any nasty messages,
content of Websites, etc. Use this information
when you contact organizations such as Online
Services, telephone companies, Internet Service
Providers, Websites, the police, etc. about what has
happened to your children.
8.
Keep in mind, if your children are targets of acyber bully, that it is most important that they
understand these two things: It is not their fault that
they are being targeted, and what the bully is
saying about them is not true. Let them know that
you are behind them as will be most of the other
kids they know
