MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH

I was recently reading an articletitled, “Adding Ten Minutes of

Reading Time Dramatically

Changes Levels of PrintExposure.” In the article, the

researchers reported findings that“time spent reading books was the

 best predictor of a student’s

reading proficiency.” As weapproach parent-teacher

conference time and look for ways to better partner withfamilies in the educational interest of our students, this seems

like a great time to remind parents that consistently reading at

home helps give students an advantage in regards to reading

proficiency by significantly increasing the number of wordsthey see each year. For instance, a student who reads 3.2minutes a day outside of school typically reads about 200,000

words per year. By increasing that to 13.2 minutes a day, theyincrease the number of words read to 825,000, which is a 313

percent increase! Imagine what a difference that can make!

Please encourage and ensure your child is reading daily athome!
