Great athletes possess a special drive and competitive spirit that allows them to excell even in the most difficult of circumstances. Meghan Dickie, currently in her fifth and final year of ACAA eligibility playing both Women’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball at Crandall University, is already the most honoured and decorated student-athlete in the history of Crandall Athletics. Having won the female athlete of the year award at Crandall in both her first and second year, she transferred to Mount Allison University for the next two years and last year was their athlete of the year after winning the ACAA MVP for Women’s Basketball and being chosen as an All-Canadian. Returning to Crandall for her fifth year in the Education program, misfortune befell Meghan in the final regular season game of the year, after Dickie had already led the Chargers Women’s Soccer team to a playoff birth in an outstanding turnaround season after going winless the year before. Late in a game vs MSVU, Dickie collided with an opposing player and suffered a ruptured kidney that doctors graded as a case 4 injury, just below the case 5 grade that is life-threatening. Forced to miss the ACAA playoffs, it would have been very easy for Meghan to call it a career and leave the considerable job of rebuilding Crandall Women’s Basketball—back in the ACAA after a year’s absence—to others.

Meghan Dickie, however, never takes the easy way out. So when doctors told her on Dec. 22nd that she was healthy enough to resume play, she immediately began to prepare and did suit up for Crandall’s 2012 home opener vs STU. Not playing her final year, she says, would have been something she would “always regret,” for far beyond all the individual awards and personal accomplishments—all much more than anything that this extraordinarily humble young woman would have asked for or imagined—Meghan has most valued her relationships with coaches and teammates. Five years of ACAA Athletics have given Meghan “so many memories... bus rides,

team bonding, inside jokes, all the particular games that I will never forget”. Most of all she values how she and her teammates “have grown as student-athletes, developed skills, and made memories and friendships that we won’t forget.” Indeed, Dickie has developed a remarkably wide range of basketball skills, offering her coaches a potent combination of offensive versatility and rebounding strength. With a full roster now in place, Dickie remains hopeful that Crandall Women’s Basketball can charge towards the playoffs and there is no doubt that Dickie’s drive will be leading the way.

As for her future plans, Dickie is ready to face more challenges. She plans to do her Education Internship next fall in China, and then continue teaching while also coaching soccer and basketball. “I am really enjoying the B.ED. program here at Crandall,” she says, which “offers a lot of necessary skills and information that will be needed in the workshop. The internship opportunities in China, Australia, and of course New Brunswick are “quite remarkable,” she adds, and is looking forward to the travel opportunities offered by her degree. Wherever she goes, Meghan adds, “I also really want to be able to coach.” Needless to say, any school fortunate enough to hire this remarkable young woman will gain a competitor, teammate, coach and friend who can be relied upon to always do her best, and to lead others to do the same. Crandall Student Association

Welcome back to Crandall, dear friends! Here we are at the beginning of a bright new semester: new classes, new faces, new year, and – for those of you who enjoy theatre – new opportunities to check out some drama productions featuring some of your fellow Crandallonians. Here at Crandall we are lucky enough to have an amazing theatre company (Crandall Spotlight Theatre) which also has a partnership with Moncton's Hubcity Theatre group. This year I have had the opportunity to work with both of these troupes. And I have been so blessed because of it. There is just something about being committed to a project from start to finish, watching everyone's hard work pay off, and getting to see people (including yourself) grow. It is awesome to have the chance to work with people who are so passionate about what they do and learning from them. If the possibility to collaborate with other like-minded artists (whether they are poets, dancers, actors, musicians, or whatever) emerges, I encourage you to take it. And if you ever have the opportunity to work with a theatre group, either on stage or behind-the-scenes, I urge you to try it out. There is

nothing like it. And you just might surprise yourself. Now, you may be wondering about the title of this article. What do men with swords have to do with art? In reality, they have a lot to do with it, especially when those three men are THE THREE MUSKETEERS! I am sure that you must have heard some mention of these three heroes – Athos, Porthos, and Aramis – before, particularly with the new movie release. The Three Musketeers was written by Alexandre Dumas in 1844 and became a much beloved classic, immortalizing this trio in literature forever. In 2006, playwright Ken Ludwig adapted this epic tale for theatre, expanding on this legend and adding in a few twists of his own. It's “All for One and One for All” in this cleverly written play which follows young D'Artagnan as he seeks to live a life of honour and join the ranks of the Musketeers. Set in seventeenth century France, it is a delightful story about staying true to yourself and standing up for what you believe in. If you are a fan of intrigue, romance, swashbuckling action, and comedy then this is the play for you: treason, heroism, dire situations, passion, swordplay, and laughs

abound! With colourful costumes and quirky personalities, you will fall in love with this wonderful cast of characters: the determined and brave D'Artagnan, spirited and lively Sabine, lovely and innocent Constance Bonacieux, haunted and valiant Athos, fashion-obsessed and comedic Prothos, charming and flirtatious Aramis, plotting and cunning Cardinal Richilieu, malevolent and mysterious Mi'lady, and

a whole slew of other eccentric players. It promises to be

a night of fun for the whole family! =) I have absolutely adored working with this amazing group of people. They have given their all, heart and soul, to this production and I promise that you will not be disappointed. Their love for acting spills forth onto the stage and it is easy to get swept away in this world of kings and queens, royal courts, adventures, and Musketeers. And in just two short weeks you can experience the excitement for yourself! From February 2nd to 4th The Three Musketeers will be showing at the Empress Theatre downtown (at 7pm each night plus a 3pm matinee on that Saturday). And on Sunday, Febrary 5th the show is coming here to Crandall! Tickets for the Crandall show can be purchased at the door and tickets for the Empress show can be purchased at the Capitol Theatre Box office, Frank's Music, and l'Université de Moncton. I hope to see your beautiful faces there! Until then, “All for One and One for All!”

Every couple years, I get into conversations where people lament the loss of the proverbial “renaissance man.” You know what I mean. (or at least you should remember the term from 1st year history) The renaissance men were these incredible guys who were masters and innovators in a broad variety of areas, from chemistry and physics, to philosophy, economics, engineering, art, architecture, etc. People sometimes ask, “why don't we have any more people like that?” And I, running on a few seconds of deep thought and pure conjecture, arrive at a few conclusions.

1) They lived in an age when there was so much left to discover. Modern society has, to a great extent, been built upon (or at least improved by) their discoveries and inventions, but we are getting to the point where you need to be increasingly specialized to discover anything new. Gone are the days when someone can be a front-runner in science, philosophy, and art simultaneously. If you want to make an impact, you need to go to school, and focus so tightly in one area that there is little room for anything else.

2) Scientific discovery has become an increasingly expensive enterprise and thus is almost exclusively sought after by corporations that can afford to fund such research, and these companies will often fund research only if it has a high probability for success and if they can pull a profit from it.

3) These men were driven. They wanted to create, to explore, to advance: they wanted to change the world. Sadly, too many of us (myself included) are just barely driven enough to get out of bed in the morning, let alone to change the world.

All that being said, what does any of it have to do

with the title of this article? Well, let's focus in on the first point: specialization. I believe we need to move away from it somewhat, but let me explain a bit. In my life I have worked and studied in a number of various fields. I have worked in retail, the service industry, graphic design, I've run deliveries, and I'm planning to talk for a living. I have studied the sciences, economics, history, theology, and mathematics, and I have dabbled in philosophy, psychology, sociology, and various other disciplines, and after all that, I think it was all worth it. A couple years ago, I listened to a conference lecture by a man named Harold Best and he recalled something his dad had told him years before: “Be interested in everything, because you never know when it will give you the opportunity to say something about Jesus,” and then he followed up with a very practical example. Best was on a plane beside a young woman who he could tell was absolutely terrified. He asked her if she was afraid of flying, and she responded “I'm afraid that we'll fall out of the sky.” He then proceeded to tell her about Bernoulli's principle, (that allows the wings on an airplane to generate lift) and tied it all back to the God who designed it all. In addition to being able to say something about Jesus, being interested in everything will allow you to be amazed by everything as well. So often we forget to see the beauty and the wonder of the world around us but when you just take the time to stop – to lean into a strong wind, to appreciate the intricacy of every single snowflake that falls, to revel in the beauty of a sunset, or to enjoy the company of good friends, (and so much more) it might just help you to enjoy life and appreciate every good gift that God gives us just a little bit more.

“Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4)

On Christmas eve, 2010, a Crandall student shared that the 25th of December was her favourite day of the year because of all the gifts that she receives within those 24 hours. She then added that the next day was the worst one because she had to wait another 364 days until that special “Holy day” => more gifts. That stuck with me. I was reminded of how easy it is to let traditions, social trends, culture, etc., make us believe that such a miraculous, history altering, life transforming event – God becoming a man in such a humble way – should be celebrated for 1 day, or maybe for a few weeks. Then, as songs, decorations, etc., are put away for another year, so it seems with Jesus; boxed up till the next “season of joy, peace, and love.” In the days following this conversation, a whole bunch of ideas came to mind and led me to write a few words in hopes of solving the “Boxing Day blues.” Now, one year later, I look back and realize how easily I have let circumstances, distractions, self-centredness, etc., cloud my view and not give my Lord the praise, honour, worship, and glory that is His alone. I hope that in 2012 by His grace, I will decrease and He will increase! So here it goes, a few more months of Christmas cheer! “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15)

January: By God's immense grace, we begin another year. What a gift! “O, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvellous things... The Lord has made known His salvation. His righteousness He revealed in the sight of the nations.” (Psalm 98:1-2)

February: It's cold out, no statutory holiday, winter blues, midterms already.... “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever... Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” (Hebrews 13:8, 15-16) Let's persevere and walk by faith, not by sight. (Or feelings)

March: See! How time flies! Enjoy the break, gear up for final exams and papers, but if you need peace and rest in your body, soul, spirit, don't rely on what the world has to offer – Jesus offers the ultimate gift. “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

May: God is good! Another semester completed; it's just like Christmas again! Have a blessed one. “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation... for as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.” (Isaiah 61:10a-11)

June: Vacations, warm weather, 6 months after what some say is “the season to be jolly,” why not celebrate Christ, just because “this is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

July: You must have heard of “Christmas in July,” so why not? Let's remember a lesson that the Apostle Paul tells: “And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.'” (Acts 20:35)

August: When we make our “Christmas list” of things we want, let's examine our hearts and our motives behind those thoughts; are they self-centred or Christ centred? Here is wise counsel from the Lord Himself. “Trust in the Lord, and do good... Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desire of your heart.” (Psalm 37:3a-4) “...but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (see v. 25-32 – legitimate needs) and shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) - Jean
