The Narrative Lectionary aims to increase Biblical knowledge, lifting up stories not often taught from most of our pulpits. It attempts to give us a whole picture of the Bible’s great storyline: beginning at Genesis, through the history of Israel’s struggle to be a nation, to the prophets, and on to the stories of Jesus, and the letters to the early churches. It is a tool to help guide our meditations on God’s Word bringing us deeper into understanding of the Bible’s great diversity and continuity. As preachers we hope this will enrich how you hear and tell God’s Great Story. We hope you can hear your story wrapped into God’s Story. We hope you can grow and be challenged to hear the Story in new and beautiful ways. Prepare to be surprised! That’s how the Holy Spirit works, after all; to bring to life new understandings, to bring us together in mission, and to keep us knit together in love. May our very lives tell of how God’s grace has captured us. May it be present in the ways we love, in the ways we serve, and in the way we speak. May the love of God be ever on your lips and always on your heart. Grace and Peace, Pastor Erika

I Love to Tell the Story

Dear friends of Bethel Lutheran,

There is an old hymn I have loved since I was a child, mostly because of its catchy melody and easy

sing-ability. Now I love it for the few lines which always catch my heart:

I love to tell the story: how pleasant to repeat what seems, each time I tell it,

more wonderfully sweet! I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the

message of salvation from God’s own holy word.

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting

to hear it like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,

I’ll sing the old, old story that I have loved so long.

God’s story is amazing and rich. It is diverse and it is beautiful. It can also be challenging and diffi-

cult, which is all the more reason to delight in taking this story close to heart with respect and rever-

ence. I am amazed, even with all the years I have spent in church and all my fancy pastor-schooling;

Scripture—God’s Great Love Story to the World—can still surprise me. I am so thankful for the gift of

being able to study with such a great variety of people who help me to hear the Word in all its richness.

I still hear of God’s grace and love for all of us new each and every time.

This fall we are continuing with learning, preaching and growing in our faith and understanding along

with the Narrative Lectionary. Through this lectionary, we are able to explore the rich, diverse nature

of Scripture—hearing old stories with new ears, and maybe learning more about stories we have never

heard. The Narrative Lectionary aims to increase Biblical knowledge, lifting up stories not often taught

from most of our pulpits. It attempts to give us a whole picture of the Bible’s great storyline: beginning

at Genesis, through the history of Israel’s struggle to be a nation, to the prophets, and on to the stories

of Jesus, and the letters to the early churches. It is a tool to help guide our meditations on God’s Word

bringing us deeper into understanding of the Bible’s great diversity and continuity.

As preachers we hope this will enrich how you hear and tell God’s Great Story. We hope you can hear

your story wrapped into God’s Story. We hope you can grow and be challenged to hear the Story in

new and beautiful ways. Prepare to be surprised! That’s how the Holy Spirit works, after all; to bring

to life new understandings, to bring us together in mission, and to keep us knit together in love.

May our very lives tell of how God’s grace has captured us. May it be present in the ways we love, in

the ways we serve, and in the way we speak. May the love of God be ever on your lips and always on

your heart.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Erika

“God’s Work, Our Hands”

Bethel Lutheran 125th Anniversary!

~ Quasquicentennial ~

1890-2015

Bethel Members. . . Check out the 125th Anniversary memorabilia on display in the foyer

and available for purchase anytime during regular office hours.

QUASQUICENTENNIAL

THANK YOU!

The theme for Bethel’s yearlong celebration is, “We

are God’s Hands for the World.” Carl Likness was

a member of the committee and had offered to be the

historian and write the history of the church for the

Anniversary Celebration. At one of our planning

meetings Carl suggested that our theme for the cele-

bration be, “We are God’s Hands for the World,”

using a globe being held by a pair of hands.

Sadly, Carl passed away

February, 2014. His theme and logo idea was adopted by the com-

mittee. A framed stained glass picture of globe and hands designed

and created by Cory Likness, son of Carl and Sylvia Likness is on

display in the atrium window area. The stained glass design repre-

sents the theme and logo Carl had for the celebration to be held, Sun-

day, October 4, 2015. A SINCERE THANK YOU to the Likness

family for this gift. It is beautiful and a fitting tribute to Carl. The

design has been the logo for the QuasquiCentennial.

Committee members are: Diane Finnie, Chairman; Connie Sletten,

Laurie Lekang; Darcy Meide; Rick Hendrickson; Monica Zentgraf;

Ali Schoneman; Bev McRoberts; Pastor Julé Ballinger and Pastor

Jim Gustafson.

Planned Charitable Giving Seminar

Thursday, September 10, 2015

7:00 pm Fellowship Hall

Faye Miller, presenter

Faye Miller is an attorney who personally understands the legal, economic and spiritual benefits that

thoughtful planned charitable giving can provide. She will discuss customary methods for leaving a leg-

acy – as well as simple, but often forgotten methods. Charitable giving doesn’t always require a huge

bank account or even writing a check.

Following this talk, you will be better able to understand the “what, how and why” that fits your own

situation, and how it impacts the legacy you would like to leave. An intelligent approach to charitable

giving will maximize the satisfaction coming from your gift - in personal, economic and spiritual advan-

tages.

None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things,

with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.

~ Mother Teresa

HOW MUCH LOVE CAN ONE ENVELOPE HOLD? Well, Bethel Lutheran, that is up to you! Let’s see how much love

can be spread on BE.THE.Love Sunday! Here is how this third annual project will work:

Come to worship on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at 9 am and 11 am OR Wednesday, September 30 at 6:45 pm to

hear an inspiring sermon on this mission challenge!

A certain number of envelopes with $50 will be available for each family unit to take and use in our community to spread

God’s love.

Inside the envelope will be three things:

1) cash

2) a BE.THE.Love card to give to the individual/group that you choose to use the cash.

3) a story card for you to return as a special offering on the Sunday’s and Wednesday to follow.

If you would like to participate and would like to donate your own money, there will be envelopes available for you too!

We will have ‘empty’ envelopes for you to take that will also include the BE.THE.Love cards and the card for telling your

story.

We are including a challenge to you as well! We would like to challenge you/your family to match the funds in the

envelope. How cool would it be for the $5000 for this project if it turned into $10,000 or more???!!! Can you imagine

the impact and surprise in the community? All because we have been blessed to be a blessing because of our faith in

Jesus Christ!

A few ideas for you to do with your envelope’s contents: go to a restaurant and wait for the Holy Spirit to show you who

needs some love – pay for their meal and at the till have the server give them a BE.THE.Love card. Make a donation to

your favorite charity. Buy someone’s oil change. Take your neighbor to a restaurant. The possibilities are endless!

The purpose of this event is NOT to get people to come to Bethel. The purpose is just to do something

for others in the name of Christ. This is evangelism in the name of love rather than evangelism as an

advertising tool for our congregation.

BE.THE.Love Sunday!

SAVE THE DATE Sundays: October 18 & 25, November 1

Wednesdays: October 21 & 28, November 4

This is when we will look at the practice of stewardship and invite Bethel members to look

in 3 different directions: Down, In, and Out. The theme will be Stewards of God’s Love.

It is the way in which we use all of the resources that God has entrusted to our care so that

we can love God and our neighbor. Stewardship is about love.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all

your mind. Matthew 22:37b

Special Congregational Meeting:

October 25, 2015 at 10 am

Bethel Lutheran will have a special congregational meeting dealing with the

Constitution and Bylaws. During that meeting the Board of Christian Education

will also be addressing the Confirmation Coordinator and Youth Ministry Coordi-

nator Positions that formerly Ivy Schulz was hired to do. The board of Christian

Education along with the support of the Executive Committee and Council would

like to propose that we open both of those positions to a full-time position with

benefits. Our youth are extremely important to our congregation, not just the

future but the present. There will be more information to come…

Dear Fellow Members of Bethel Lutheran Church,

I have vivid memories of growing up in a church family. We had a phenomenal youth leader who organized events

for us at church (lock-ins, suppers, Bible studies) and events outside the church including National Gathering which

happened to be in New Orleans the year I was eligible to attend. We needed to fundraise in order to earn enough

money to go to the gathering so our youth leader helped us to do just that. When I was in high school, I became in-

volved with Lutheran Youth Fellowship (LYF) in Minnesota. I had the opportunity to work with adult leaders who led

a group of us, as a board, to organize district youth conventions for hundreds of other youth. I’m still in contact with

these leaders almost 25 years later. All of them were someone I felt I could talk to who would talk with me on my

level and helped to mold my faith.

Now as an adult with three children, one of whom is a teenager (where did that time go?!?), I can only pray for the

same type of youth leadership for my kids as I had as a teen. Great things are happening at Bethel Lutheran and we, as

a congregation, have to see the importance of our youth as part of the congregation. Teens are desperate for adults to

actually show up and invest in their life on a consistent basis. Consistency is big because so much of life today is in-

consistent. Teens need consistency and they need it from the church more than ever. Please prayerfully consider and

think about how consistent Bethel Lutheran can be for our youth by adding a full-time youth director to the leadership

staff. Our youth deserve the support in their faith by our congregation.

Sincerely,

Becky DeVries

Bethel Lutheran Church,

I feel the youth in this church need someone with great communication skills, trustworthiness, strong faith, and most

of all, being able to develop relationships with their students. That’s what I think is the most important thing we need

in a Youth Director…being able to have relationships with students.

Sincerely,

Medora Good (10th Grade Youth)

Bethel Lutheran Preschool 2016?

Over the past year, a group of Bethel members have been meeting to discuss and seriously consider

beginning a Preschool at Bethel Lutheran Church. It seems as if there is a shortage in our community

for Preschool programs for those who are preparing for Kindergarten. If you have a child who will be

entering preschool in the fall of 2016 please come to an informational meeting on Wednesday

evening, September 16 – 5:45 pm. We are looking for interest and input! We are also looking for a

director with a passion for preschool children as well as a love of Christ! If you have questions, concerns

or input please contact Pastor Julé.

Those serving on the committee are:

Kathy Dimmer, Linda Azure, Anna Marohl,

Dawn Kubela, Bobbi Jo Jelinek.

Attention parents/guardians/grandparents of small children:

Beginning Sunday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 9

We have hired nursery staff ready to care and love your children

while you participate in worship, Wednesday School, choir, coffee

hour, Whole Family Sunday School, Confirmation, Adult Education,

etc. We desire to have your children in worship and participating in

the activities at the church; however, we also realize that it can be

difficult for the adults. Please take advantage of this service.

Hours: Sundays: 8:30 am – 12:00 pm

Wednesdays: 5:00 – 7:30 pm

Summer is winding down much to my chagrin because even though I am not an

outdoors person (too many bugs, ick) I do enjoy the nice weather.

I have ordered the new materials for the next Wednesday School year which starts

on September 16. Quite a few families have already registered for the coming

year. Thank you for that. There are registration forms on line and in the Church

foyer. I am also looking for Wednesday School teachers so if you would like to be

involved I can definitely find a place for you! The Board of Education wants to start

a Family Sunday School and I am looking for an intergenerational program for it. We have a few

families signed up and it starts September 20. We will be using the same registration form for both pro-

grams.

September 2, Donya-Blair Tischer will present a preview of the “Love and Logic” program and

the Richland County Sheriff’s Department will present a short refresher course on Emergency Crisis

Planning.

Hope to see you all in the near future.

Blessings, Lila

DAYTIME BOOK CLUB

The Bethel Daytime Book Club met August 11 with five members present. We planned our reading selections through

December. Our discussion of the book “Every Fifteen Minutes” by Lisa Scottoline was tabled until next month when

more of the members can participate.

Monthly Selections:

September 8 A Man Called Ove by Frederick Backman

October 13 Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

November 10 Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

December 8 Christmas book of choice

We meet the second Tuesday of each month in the library at 10:30 a.m. Now is the perfect time to join a book club.

All are welcome.

“Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?” ~Henry Ward Beecher~

Evening Book Club

June: “The Princess Bride” by Wiliam Goldman 5 stars

This was a much loved book by several of our members. It is a new classic novel that is about adventure,

romance, and revenge. It is complete with sword fights, beasts, giants, and more.

July: “Fly Away Home” by Jennifer Weiner 3-1/2 stars

A story about a mother and her daughters who go to their family beach house to heal from their respective

hurtful relationships. A good beach read.

August: “All the Light you Cannot See” 4 stars

This is an award winning book (including the Pulitzer Prize). It is a story about a blind Parisian girl and a

teenage German boy whose lives intersect briefly during World War II.

Our next books: September: “Girl on The Train” by Paula Hawkins

October: “The Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline

November: “The Green Mile” by Stephen King

We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Gisvold Lounge. All are welcome.

The Bethel Library's fiction collection just keeps growing, thanks to many gen-

erous donations. This growth has made it necessary to add more shelving and

shift the collection. In July, two new five- shelf bookcases were purchased. These were placed on the north wall, and the

nonfiction books are shifted to that wall. The Dewey Decimal numbering begins on the bottom shelf of the easternmost

bookcase and continues reading right to left up to the top shelf. This organization continues bottom to top, right to left

through the shelves on the north wall. The fiction collection reads left to right, alphabetically, top to bottom starting on the

south wall and continuing to the southwest bookcase on the west wall. The biography section has been moved to the

northwest bookcase on the west wall and reads, alphabetically by the person the book is about, top to bottom. Beneath the

biography on that bookcase are the DVDs, nonfiction first by Dewey Decimal number followed by biography and fiction.

Since school has started and life gets a little more stressful, we librarians would like to recommend three new books we

acquired this summer.

FL Letting Them Go by Dave Veerman covers several areas of communication with your child going to college or

248.8 work after high school, including preparing your child spiritually for living on his or her own, keeping lines of

VE communication open, managing expectations about finances, and when to intervene as problems arise.

FL I'm Too Young to Be This Old by Poppy Smith is loaded with biblically informed wisdom and ample doses of

305.2 humor. It will give you the inspiration and insight you need to turn your middle years into the best years of your

SM life.

FL The Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress-Free Living by Amit Sood, M.D. Draws on groundbreaking brain research that

616.8 helps you understand the brain's two modes and how an imbalance between them produces unwanted stress. A

SO professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a Christian, Dr. Sood put together a structured

program that is anchored in science and accessible to everyone.

Youth coordinator and Confirmation Coordinator job openings:

There was discussion about revising the job posting to a full time position with benefits. This would involve an in-

crease to the budgeted salary due to the cost of insurance. The intention would be to entice a quality candidate as the

future of our youth is imperative to keep Bethel going forward in a positive manner. This change would involve a

congregational vote due to the increased cost to offer benefits.
