BBPC Weekly BUZZ

December 21, 2018

Help Us Trim Our Tree Our Christmas Tree in the reception area is beginning to reflect the individuals and families that make up BBPC, but there is still room for YOUR ornament! If you haven’t already, please consider bringing an ornament from home or perhaps make one to decorate our tree. Ornaments can be reclaimed on or after Epiphany, January 6th or can become a permanent gift to the church for years to come.

Children and Youth

December 23 This Sunday, there will be NO Sunday school during les-sons and carols but young children may join me in the preschool classroom for activities.

There is no youth group: it will resume in January.

Children and youth are invited to join in leading the 4:30 service on Christmas Eve. There are three different opportunities for children and youth to be involved on Christmas Eve at the 4:30 Ser-vice. If your child would like to participate, please sign up here and plan to arrive at the church at 4:00 on Christmas Eve to practice. Young children may help with the service by bringing up the figures for the Nativity during the gospel reading. Middle school aged youth may help with the children's message. High school youth may help with communion. Please complete this form for each child who would like to help with the worship service. January 6

Intergenerational Worship: Please let me know if your children) would like to participate in Worship.

Christmas Joy Offering At the Saturday and Sunday worship services (December 22 and 23) we will receive the Christmas Joy offering. This is one of the three special offerings in support of our denomi-nation, PCUSA. A portion of the Christmas Joy offering provides direct support to our church leaders. It provides critical financial support and grants for current and retired Presbyterian church workers in their time of need. Income and housing supplements are also made possible with these funds. The other portion of the offering provides educa-tion and leadership development skills at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of col-or. Many of the students receiving this financial support are the first in their families to enroll in higher education. Please remember the clergy and staff throughout the Pres-byterian church family with your generous contribution to the Christmas Joy offering.

THANK YOU

From Pastor Linda: A heartfelt thank you for all the prayers, cards and texts. I have been so very touched by your good wishes. I am doing well. Recovery is a slow and tiresome process, but I am behaving (my family is seeing to that). I am looking forward to being back with you in January, but in the meantime I wish you all a very Merry & Meaningful Christmas!

ASP Fundraiser There will be an ASP fundraiser concert on January 6th at 6:00 at the church held by Simon Dettelback to raise money for the upcoming ASP service trip. There will be several performers including Simon, his sister Lila, his brother Ben, and returning performer Isabel Roman playing trumpet.

Epiphany Luncheon Enjoy this opportunity to celebrate Epiphany as this holi-day season winds down. On January 12, 2019, come gather for an Epiphany luncheon with the Presbyterian Women in New Brunswick Presbytery at the Somerset Presbyterian Church on JFK Boulevard in Somerset. We will be gathering at 11:00 AM to hear Pastor Ricardo from a local Honduran church who will tell us how he sees God changing lives through the message of the Gospel. He returns to Honduras each years to carry donations, love, and support from the New Jersey congregation to the poor and his “seeded” congregations. A luncheon with the Epiphany cake will follow; we will recognize the 2018 Memorials and Honorary Life Memberships. The program is expected to close at 1:30 PM. We will be accepting gift cards for local and Honduran mission work. A donation of $5.00 for the program and luncheon will also be received. Register for the meeting with Doris Sabin (732-469-3843, [email protected]); carpool arrangements can be made.

Operation St. Nick ‘Thank you’ The Mission Commission thanks everyone who participat-ed in this year’s operation St. Nick, a program to provide Christmas gifts to foster children in Somerset County through the Division of Child Protection and Permanency of the Department of Human Services. Our contact is Karin Erikson, through whom our church has participated in this program for many years.

Through your GENEROUS support we provided gifts for 70 children, often more generously than requested. Karin came last Sunday after our 10:00 am worship service with a co-worker and all the gifts were loaded into the Caravan and taken away to be given to the parents of the foster children for Christmas Day.

Again, many thanks. For your support, Jane Settle, for the Mission Commission

Blue Christmas While many are thankful for the joys of Christmas, we realize others can experience sorrow while others are celebrating. The Caring Ministers have provided a way to express these losses and sorrows for the past years. Each weekend through Advent the blue Christmas tree will be lit in the rear of the sanctuary. We invite you to fill out a blue card with any concern/s and attach it to the tree-no name needed. The Caring Ministers will pray over all the cards in January.

Stewardship Pledges

The Stewardship Commission would like to thank all those who have returned a pledge card to date. If you have not yet returned a pledge card, please consider doing so in order for BBPC to continue to provide the worship opportunities, programs, and mission activities that have come to mean so much to so many.

Your pledges direct our plans for the coming year.

Adult Mission Trip:

February 18-22, 2019 Once again we have an opportunity to put together an Adult Mission Trip. This year we will not be traveling south for ASP. We will stay right here in New Jersey and help re-build homes impacted by Super Storm Sandy. We will be assigned work by the Super Storm Sandy Rebuild-ing Program (or SBP). There is also a volunteer host site at Camp Evans where we can stay for the week. This project comes to us through PDA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance).

If you are interested speak to John Almendinger or email [email protected]. He will send you links that will explain more.

USHERS NEEDED!!!If you have a passion to serve BBPC, one of the simplest ways you can do this is by becom-ing an USHER! We are currently in need of 2 Ushers to serve at our Sunday services. The more Usher teams we have, the more time you’ll have between “rotations”.

There are only TWO requirements for this position: Friendly and Welcoming! If you’re currently sitting in the pews, chances are that you already possess those qualities. “Newbies” will be paired with more seasoned “team mates”, so have no fears.

Please feel free to contact Adriana Biedermann at [email protected]. OR just come see me at church, I’ll probably be ushering!

Key Fobs: Please return unneeded key fobs to the church office. Thank you

Flower chart: The 2019 Flower chart is posted outside the office.

Please send articles for the Buzz to Sharon: [email protected] with a copy to Martha: [email protected] Buzz articles are due by Thursday at 3:00. Thank you!
