PICKS OF THE WEEK: Our IdiotBrother, Smurfs, Hot In Cleveland

Couch Theatre

By Sam Struckhoff

EDITOR’S NOTE: DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores theweek of November 28, 2011PICKS OFTHEWEEK“Our Idiot Brother” (R) -- Is the man who sells pot to a uniformed cop an insuffer-able dolt? Or is he just a refreshingly honest and trusting man in a cynical world? This is the question at the heart of this lighthearted comedy. Paul Rudd puts allof his easygoing charm into Ned, the titular idiot. After his hippie girlfriend kicksNed out of his organic farm, his three sisters (Zoey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banksand Emily Mortimer) offer him a place to stay. Ned cycles through being burden-some, charming, obnoxiously burdensome and then somehow redeeming himself.Like Ned, the film creates positivity, even if overdoing it a little bit.“Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil” (R) -- Tucker and Dale (the equally underrated AlanTudyk and Tyler Labine) are two country boys and best friends taking some timeoff in a cabin in the woods. To an outsider, the friendly but awkward duo mayappear to be straight out of an ‘80s slasher flick. In a series hilarious and brutallyunfortunate coincidences, a group of superficial college kids each get themselveskilled while under the impression that the pair of sweet-natured rednecks are psy-chopaths who have kidnapped their friend. To the unseasoned, it’s a comedy complete with funny lines, likable characters andhilarious misunderstandings. For a horror fan, this is a loving send-up worthy ofmocking our favorite movies.“30 Minutes or Less” (R) -- This original comedy about a pizza guy turned humanexplosive is loud, abrasive and over in a flash. Jesse Eisenberg plays Nick, thesmall-town loser who gets a bomb strapped to his chest by a pair of bumblingcriminals who want him to rob a bank. Nick enlists the reluctant help of an oldfriend, Chet (Aziz Ansari).Expletives, off-color humor and a speedy disregard for plot holes keep thingsmoving along at a decent pace. Those who can’t get into the profane spirit ofthings will be quickly left behind. However, fans of Ansari’s brand of humor orDanny McBride’s character acting will get a bursts of laughter from the experi-ence.DOG OFTHEWEEK“The Smurfs” (PG) -- I’m going to keep this short. I’ve only got room for onepun, and I just used it. If somebody can find it in themselves to laugh at “smurf”being used in place of every third or fourth word through the course of a movie100 minutes long, then that person may enjoy this film. For the rest of mankind,it’s a witless 3-D exercise in outdated references and all the compensating self-referential humor.TV RELEASES“Smallville: The Complete Tenth Season”“30 Rock: Season 5”“Hot in Cleveland: Season Two”“The Six Million Dollar Man: Season 1”“Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations Collection 6/Part 1”

THE KITCHEN DIVABy Angela Shelf Medearis

New Life ForThanksgiving LeftoversE very year around the holidaysIʼm faced with the same dilemma -- whatdo I do with all of the leftovers? Iʼvestopped looking at leftovers as a problemand view them as a blessing and a chal-lenge to my culinary creativity. Having avariety of already cooked and seasonedmeats and vegetables means an easiertime in the kitchen. This year, my Thanksgivingturkey and vegetables will betransformed into my versionof Shepherdʼs Pie. Tradition-ally, shepherdʼs pie is madewith lamb and “cottage pie”is made with beef. This is mytwist on these two favoriteEnglish casseroles, substitut-ing leftover roast turkey or hamfor the meat, whatever leftovervegetables I happened to haveon hand for the filling, and acombination of mashed whitepotatoes and sweet potatoesfor the savory topping. Try thisDiva-Style Shepherdʼs Pie andcure your culinary dilemma thisholiday season!

DIVA-STYLE SHEPHERDʼSPIE

You can double this recipe touse up an abundance of leftovers andfreeze one pan to serve later. You canmake one version of this Shepherdʼs Piewith turkey and the other with ham, ifyouʼd like. Wrap the pan tightly with plasticwrap and cover it with foil. It will keep inthe freezer for up to 6 months.

Add theflour and cook, stirring, until thick, about 1minute. Stir in the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually add the

stock and then the bay leaf, and bring to aboil.3. Reduce the heat to medium-low andsimmer until the mixture is thickened, 6to 8 minutes. Add the meat and the veg-etables, stir well to combine, cook for 2minutes.4. Remove from the pan from the heat anddiscard the bay leaf. Carefully transfer tothe prepared dish and spoon the potatoesover the meat mixture, spreading to the

edges with a fork. Place panon a baking sheet. Sprinklewith the cheese and bake untilthe cheese is bubbly and thepotatoes are crisp around theedges, 22 to 25 minutes.5. Let sit for 10 minutes beforeserving. Garnish with choppedgreen onions, parsley or celeryleaves, if desired, and serve.Serves 4.

MIXED MASHED POTATOES

For RealBargains, ReadFoor LabelsNot only do consumers need to jug-gle brands and stores to find the bestbargains on food, but determiningwhat’s in the food is a minefield as well. In theory, the label and pack-aging will disclose this information, but they often need some transla-tion.Low sodium: “Low” is subjective. Check the percentage of daily valueon the label. It’s not low if one serving can equal more than half yourdaily allotment of sodium.Light: While generally meant to indicate fewer calories, it’s not trueacross the board. Compare two cans of soup, the regular and the“light” version of the same kind by the same manufacturer. Is there anappreciable difference in calories?Made with real fruit: How much fruit is actually in the food? If it’s listedafter thethird item on the ingredients list, you’re not getting much.Organic: “Certified organic” food is regulated and promises to begrown on land that was pesticide free for the previous three years. With meat, the animals would have been fed a special diet without an-tibiotics or hormones. “Made with organic ingredients” isn’t the sameas wholly organic.Whole grains: The health benefit depends on how much is actuallypresent. See where it falls in the ingredients lineup. If it’s third or fourthon the list, you’re not getting much. Note: Enriched bleached flour iswhite flour with vitamins added. If “enriched” bread is dark, look forcoloring that’s been added to make it appear to be made of wholegrains.Fiber: Which form of fiber is in the food? You’ll need to check the in-gredients list.Serving size: Be realistic. If a serving size is a half cup of a dessert, are you going to stop at that half cup? On the other hand, if the food isa main dish, will you family be satisfied with half-cup servings?Know what you’re spending your money on so you can get the mostnutrition for your dollar. If you’re not in the habit of reading labels, startby checking at least five things on every label before the food goesinto your cart. Choose what those five things will be -- perhaps so-dium, protein, sugars, fats and the first three ingredients. It’s a start.David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, butwill incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Donna’s Day

No Fuss, SlowCooker Beef Tacos

It’s finally time to share my family’sfavorite “Too Good to Be True Slow-Cooker Beef Tacos” recipe. Passed on by word of mouth from one neigh-bor to the other, it’s a recipe that’s so easy to remember that I’ve justnever taken the time to write it down.Simply put: “Place pot roast sprinkled with taco seasoning in a slowcooker. Set on high and cook five to six hours. Spoon tender, shreddedbeef into warm soft taco shells and add favorite fillings.” That’s it! No-fail,no-fuss cooking that our busy lifestyles demand when we want to gatherfriends together for a robust and tasty evening meal.

Ingredients for 12 soft-shell beef tacos:2-1/2- to 3-pound boneless beef chuck pot roast, trimmed of fat1-ounce package taco seasoning mix, such as Old El Paso brand1 medium onion, peeled and sliced (optional)12 flour tortillasToppings according to taste: cilantro, chopped tomatoes, chili peppersand onions, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, squeeze of lime juice

1. Sprinkle both sides of meat with seasoning mix. Reduce the amountaccording to taste. Place meat in slow cooker. If using onion, spreadslices evenly over the meat. No need to add water.2. Cover, set on high and cook for five to six hours or until meat is ten-der and easily falls apart. Remove from slow cooker with a large slottedspoon.3. Using two forks, shred the beef into a large bowl. Add onion and re-maining warm juices from the slow cooker. Toss lightly to keep moist. To serve, spoon meat into warm taco shells. Add favorite toppings.

Extra idea: For a spicy pot-roast dinner, follow above steps. After threeand a half hours in the slow cooker, add six peeled and quartered pota-toes and six medium carrots, halved crosswise and lengthwise, on top ofthe meat. Add pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt. When meat and vegetablesare tender, about two hours later, remove meat and vegetables with aslotted spoon and place on a serving platter. Spoon drippings over meat, and serve with a fresh green salad. Serves 6.***Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public televi-sion nationwide.
