First Presbyterian Church, I want to take the time to let you know how very much I appreciate your taking Diontay to the camp in Rapid City. He really enjoyed it and any bit of happiness in his life brings happiness to my life. I can’t begin to express what it means to me to know that he has such a strong support system. God Bless You!, Holly Phillips The Mission Committee also had a very nice thank you from Lolita Erickson about her great camp experience and thanks you for sending her. To all the Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church, I want to thank you all for the very pretty flowers that you gave me for my 90th birthday. I love them and enjoy them very much. Thank you all, Eva Vilhauer Deacons, Thank you for the flower arrangement. Thanks for remembering me on my special day, Dorothy Menning Deacons and First Church family, Thank you for the flower arrangement and cards for our 50th anniversary. The flowers were in the sanctuary on the 5th and in the office the following week . August is also the anniversary when the congregation assisted us and lifted prayers for our daughter in 1985 and her eventual surgery in 1986. We continue to celebrate her life and thank our First Presbyterian Church family for all you have meant to us over the years. Max & Jeannette Peterson

The Final Act

What is your hope as a Christian?

How do you think life and history will turn out?

What difference does it make?

It matters very much what we are hoping for, because “…

meaningful action in history is possible only where there is

some vision of a future goal.”

In the book of Revelation, we see the grand conclusion of the

story, God’s final purpose unveiled. This final book of the Bi-

ble offers a picture of a totally restored creation where relation-

ships are healed, bodies are restored, and the effects of sin are

totally effaced. In church, we frequently pray, “Thy kingdom

come,” and in closing chapters of Revelation, we see God’s

kingdom come!

How is this victory achieved? How is it that the seemingly

endless cycle of pain, disease, war, and death is finally ended?

In Revelation 5, John (the author of the book) sees a scroll that

represents sovereign control over history. When this scroll is

opened, God’s purposes will be achieved and God’s people

will share in his salvation.

But John begins to weep, because at first no one can be found

who is worthy to open the scroll. Then a mighty and trium-

phant lion (representing Jesus) comes forward to open the

scroll! When John looks again, the lion has become a lamb

looking like it has been slain. This means that Jesus’ greatest

mans, 1989), 114.

victory was accomplished in his death on the cross! The Lamb

(Jesus) then opens the scroll and guides history to its final purpose,

culminating in the renewed heaven and renewed earth (Rev. 21-22).

We live in the “in-between times,” between Jesus’ triumph on the

cross and the culmination of history, when he will make all things

new. While we Christians often think of our “hope” as being

heaven, the book of Revelation portrays our hope as a renewed

heaven and earth. The notion of an ‘after-life’ as disembodied,

eternal spirits is not found in the Scriptures. Rather, the New Tes-

tament gives this basic timeline: 1) Jesus returns, 2) the dead are

bodily raised, 3) Jesus judges the world, and 4) God restores the

creation, including those who trust in Christ. We will have new

bodies; we will continue to work, create, and enjoy life; all without

the shackles of sin, sorrow, and sickness. The goal of God’s work

in creation is not our escape from creation, but his renewal of it.

What a wonder that will be!

In the closing words of Scripture, Jesus says to us, “See, I am com-

ing soon.” To which we can reply together with John, “Amen (So

be it!). Come, Lord Jesus.”

- Pastor Andrew

and Arcadia, Fla., and now operates a 27-acre site under a covenant with Cumberland and the Tampa Bay and Peace River Presbyteries of the Presbyterian Church (USA). At the Gathering, we had the opportunity to witness to a local Publix grocery store along with the Coalition of Immoka-lee Workers (CIW), regarding their efforts to get Publix to pay just ONE CENT more per pound of toma-toes they purchase, which would result in a small increase in farmworkers’ wages. Sylvia Perez, a farmworker with CIW, and her son Elias joined our group for the visit to Publix. These brothers and sisters have had no raise in pay in DECADES. They face violence and sexual harassment in the fields, and in extreme cases, modern slavery. Housing is so scarce it often con-sumes half of a family’s income. In order to survive, families crowd together in dilapi-dated trailers, creating conditions where diseases thrive. There isn’t space here to describe all the ways in which Beth-El serves its neighbors, but every Tuesday, they distrib-ute food bags containing basic food items of rice, beans, flour, canned goods, cereal, pasta and bread. For some families at some times of the year, it is all the food they have. Our Lord calls us to remember “the least of these” among us, and by so doing, we are ministering to Jesus him-self. When the $20 gift cards to be used in the Beth-El ministry were totaled, the amount came to $39,250.15. The theme of this Gathering was River of Hope. I hope those gift cards will help bring hope to many of Beth-El’s 600 families. - Sandy Weil Fisher

Forestburg Melons, Ruskin Tomatoes A tale of the PW 2012 Churchwide Gathering

Growing up in eastern North Carolina, my family always had fresh produce growing right outside our door, as Mrs. Marrow offered half her vacant lot to us if Dad would plow the whole lot so she and her son’s family could garden too. One of Dad’s all-time favorite foods was a fresh-picked Big Boy or Beefsteak tomato. After my dad retired from his last fulltime pulpit ministry, he was called to supply-preach in a small church in Ruskin, Fla., so every Saturday night, he and Mom would drive from their home in Orlando to Ruskin for the Sunday morning worship. So what’s with the title of this mini-report of the Gathering? Here’s what: Just as our incomparable locally grown watermelons are so good BECAUSE of where they’re grown, so are Ruskin to-matoes the “cream of the crop” because of where they’re grown. I’ve never had a sweeter watermelon than the one that’s in my refrigerator right now, and when I’m wintering in Florida, I al-ways look for the proud signs at the farmers markets and grocery stores proclaiming “Ruskin tomatoes”! So when I saw that our $20 gift-card offering for this Gath-ering was designated for the Beth-El Farmworker Ministry that be-gan in Ruskin and that there would be a mis-sion trip to Beth-El, I signed up. The Beth-El Farmworker Ministry began in 1976 when a small group of Cumberland Presbyterians rented a tiny house in Ruskin and began holding Spanish-language church services for migrant farmworkers. When the families came to worship, their many other needs were obvious: They were usually hun-gry, often cold in winter (yes, it DOES get cold!), some slept in cars or trucks, many could neither read nor write.

Member Highlights

Allen & Jan LaMont

Allen was born in Huron at the Sprague Hospital to Ray and Florence LaMont who farmed west of Willow Lake. Florence was a rural school teacher and taught Allen for two years. He had to miss one year due to having Bright’s Disease, now known as nephritis. He graduated from Bancroft High School. Three

siblings, Keith, Lowell and Lois have passed away. Allen worked on the farm with his dad, graduated from Huron College, and worked at the bank in Willow Lake. He became a State Bank Examiner and traveled the state for a number of years. He started farming on the home place before he got his real-estate license. He then sold Real Estate for Jensen’s Realty where he met Jan who needed to rent a house. Several years later Allen sold Real Estate for L-B Realty and when the firm closed he

started LaMont School of Real Estate. Allen spent six years in the Army National Guard. Allen farmed for thirty years. Jan Dusell was born in Beaver Dam WI to Earl and Eve-lyn Dusell who owned and operated a dairy farm near the town. Jan’s widowed sister, Joyce along with her daughter and grand-daughter lives in WI as does Jan’s brother, Jim, who now farms and works at Fleet Farm. Jan graduated from Beaver Dam High School, received a diploma in nursing from the nursing school in Oshkosh and a degree from the U. of St. Frances in Joliet Ill. She worked for 16 ½ years in the Beaver Dam Community Hos-pital. She was Head Nurse in ICU for 14 years. In early 1984 she moved to S. D. as she had friends in Mitchell, and took a po-sition at HRMC in Huron. She has worked there for over 26 years in Administration and Critical Care. In December 1984 she married Allen.

Allen and Jan built their current home and moved in on Feb. 22, 2005. The next day was a blizzard so every-thing didn’t get unloaded right away. Jan designed the home so that their antiques could be displayed, many of which she has refinished herself. The hanging lamps were

kerosene ceiling lamps that were converted to electricity. There are various collections, and lovely furnishings. She and Allen work with antique and consignment shops in Chamberlain, Madison, Mitchell and Arlington. They enjoy attending auctions. Jan likes to sew, care for their beautiful flowers and has a lovely garden with a deer fence to protect it. Both Allen and Jan love to fish and go to the Hills a few times every year to do so. In fact, this year Jan got a 4 pound 10 ounce, 21 ½ inch long Brown Trout that will be mounted on the wall. They frequently visit family in Wisconsin. Allen’s folks moved to Huron in the late 1970’s. In 1981 Al-len along with his parents joined First Church.
