Bayview Construction Ltd. wants your business and has no qualms about making sure you know it.

It’s a key reason they have grown to become one of the best-known names in Manitoba’s heavy construction industry over the past 22 years.

“We’re confident about the work we do and the work we’re capable of doing,” explains Bayview’s General Manager, Joel Martens.

“Our company is committed to doing the best work possible – no shortcuts, no magic formula. Our teams push hard all year in ev-ery season, to ensure our jobs are completed to the highest standards – our own. That attitude, that assurance is what you get when you choose Bayview.”

Today’s multi-faceted business, along with its innovative sister company, Rocky Road Recycling Ltd., has evolved tremendously from its roots due in great part to the vision of its President Blake Karschuk and his partners, John Motkaluk and Jeff Krawetz.

Through their unyielding tenacity and strong leadership, the companies have attract-ed talented, driven leaders like Martens to head their teams and nearly 200 employees in the successful achievement of their commitments.

“The individual departments in our com-panies benefit from the years of experience and hands-on management style that we demon-strate across both entities,” Martens explains.

“We believe this separates us from the pack as quality and commitment are para-mount to our success.”

Bayview Construction Ltd.On any given day throughout the year, Bayview’s crews could be slip-form paving con-crete for a major city street, clearing snow in 200 city parking lots, sanding a municipal road or developing vacant land that will eventually become a new community.

This diversity is another reason Bayview has become a force in the industry.

“Hands-down, we have become one of the largest slip-form paving companies in the prov-ince,” notes Martens.

In fact, it’s become one of the most im-portant components of Bayview’s business. It was Bayview that completed the largest one-day pour of slip-form concrete in the city of Winnipeg in June 2012 on the Phase I Waverley

West Arterial Roads Project, one of the city’s fastest growing communities.

However, being leaders is nothing new for Bayview – not only did they construct the largest intersection in the city – Sterling Lyon Parkway and Kenaston Boulevard – but they’re also the largest stand-by snow removal con-tractor in Winnipeg, where winter services must be reliable and effective to cope with our harsh climate.

The company was also responsible for all the roadwork improvement for IKEA and Seasons of Tuxedo Shopping Centre, a $10.5-million project that was completed in 2010 and is now arguably one of the most de-sirable shopping locations in the city.

And 2014 was no different.“This past summer, we worked on the

twinning of Panet Road and Molson Street in Transcona,” Martens explains. “We also com-pleted the Ness Avenue concrete reconstruction as well as similar work on several residential streets in addition to numerous residential/commercial subdivisions. 2015 is shaping up to be just as busy.”

Outside of paving and concrete work, Bayview invests significant time providing maintenance services to municipalities in the Manitoba Capital Region including street sweeping, snow removal and sanding.

Additionally, they are well equipped to work with other companies to help lay the groundwork for new communities, commercial spaces and more.

“From a farm field to full-site develop-ment, Bayview provides the development community peace of mind with turn-key ser-vice,” explains Martens.

“We believe it’s that turn-key service that keeps the phones ringing.”

Rocky Road Recycling Ltd.Eleven years after Bayview got its start, it quickly learned about an untapped market that could utilize excess concrete through a recycling program. As one of the first organiza-tions to develop the concrete recycling method, Rocky Road Recycling became Bayview’s sister company.

“We were the first to make a material that meets the City of Winnipeg’s standards”, says Martens, who also serves as General Manager for Rocky Road Recycling.

“Everything that comes into our yard leaves as a reusable product.”

Rocky Road Recycling crushes concrete and asphalt to various sizes to meet a wide ar-ray of project specifications. Crushed concrete can be used for large-scale projects like parking lots, roadways, commercial or residential proj-ects, while crushed asphalt is primarily used for high-traffic areas.

The company takes an innovative ap-proach to getting more out of construction and doing it in an environmentally conscious way. As one of the pioneers in Manitoba, all of Rocky Road Recycling’s materials are produced to City of Winnipeg’s specifications.

“What separates us from our competitors is that we crush it to the city’s standards and then we sell it in a retail capacity; this has mul-tiple benefits to the bottom line,” says Martens. “Environmentally, socially as well as operation-ally, we practice triple bottom-line reporting.”

The company conveniently has the means to mobilize their equipment, bring their crush-ers to active sites, eradicating a potential client’s expense for hauling and tipping fees. They make going green in the construction world easier than ever.

With Rocky Road Recycling’s dedication to convenience through delivery and on-site crushing, they eliminate the excuse of complet-ing construction projects without wedging in some form of repurposed materials.

Now with the formation of the newest di-vision, sewer and water installation and repair, Rocky Road Recycling, in conjunction with Bayview, can provide their customers with a full range of services in one complete package. From the beginning of a project to its comple-tion, they can do it all.

Rocky Road Recycling has carved out its place on the Manitoba heavy construction scene by creating a venue for other companies to drop off their concrete and asphalt, which is recycled and sold back to the customer. Many customers find it very advantageous to dump their concrete and then get loaded up with re-cycled material to haul back to their site, thus reducing their cartage by 50 per cent.

Safety is paramountIn an industry where accidents can easily be se-rious, both Bayview and Rocky Road Recycling have been proactive in keeping their staff safe.

Both companies are CORTM certified, which they not only see as a value-add for their employees but also an opportunity to demon-strate their corporate social responsibility.

“We practice what we preach. We want to see each and every one our employees go-ing home to their families each and every day,” explains Martens.

“Safety is mandated but it’s the right thing to do because we want to continue to work with our employees for years to come.”

On the horizonProud of their places in the industry and their contributions to Manitoba’s infrastructure, both Bayview and Rocky Road Recycling are eager to continue to explore new ventures, in-cluding public-private partnerships.

A bonding capacity in excess of $50 million allows both Bayview and Rocky Road Recycling to continue to take on major large-scale projects, delivering high-quality, on-time and innovative results that demon-strate a cutting-edge workforce.

As governments at all levels recognize the need to invest in infrastructure, through both renewal and new projects, both com-panies have positioned themselves to be a crucial part of their plans.

“We’re poised to tap into increased government spending and we want to help

Manitoba and Winnipeg achieve the goals of their mandate to renew core infrastructure,” says Martens.

Overall, Martens knows that both Bayview and Rocky Road Recycling will con-tinue to be ambitious in their pursuit of heavy construction excellence.

“Our future looks incredibly bright,” he affirms.

“With the sheer number of mega proj-ects that are coming on board within the province and city in the next couple of years, we have the capacity to not only take them on but excel with our proficient staff, diverse ex-perience and commitment to excellence. With an increasing footprint, we see expansion of the services we’re able to offer, a growing workforce and our ability to bid on larger and larger projects.”
