“I am One with the World, Mark my World!”
This year’s Global Month Celebration focuses on the importance of our
place in the world. That is to say that our identity, no matter what race we are in,
culture that we embrace, country that we live in, language that we speak of,
religion that we believe in, or colour that we have grown up to, our individual
contributions to the world, whether big or small matter.
With the theme, I am One with the World, Mark my World! we aim to
increase the student’s awareness and appreciation of his or her part in being
one with the world by sharing the joy of loving, understanding, and collaborating
with one another to promote unity, peace, and harmony with oneself, with
others, with the community, country, and the rest of the world.
With this, the SLGE teachers hope that this endeavour will uphold what we
have envisioned for, and that is to make this wonderful celebration of our
existence as citizens of the world more meaningful and worthwhile for each and
everyone of us. Quant Je Puis, As Much as We Can!
Below are the activities that are part of the Global Month Celebration:
1. A Parade for Peace!
All levels will participate in this year’s Parade for Peace. This parade will
simulate the “Parade of Nations" where students wear their own style of costume
with their own- self-made flag of the country they represent. The parade will start
from the back parking area, to the drop off area, lobby, walkway to the cafeteria,
then culminates at the field in front of the library. Before they enter the gymnasium for
the assembly, they will first form the human peace sign in the football field. A prayer
for world peace will be narrated by thedifferent representatives.

On Meeting GOALS in
KHAN ACADEMY
Valiant Knights Gear up for
Reading Marathons
Semestral Break is just around the corner!
The Semestral break will start on October 30, 2017
and the resumption of classes will be on November 14, 2017. Let’s stay productive during the break!
To encourage the students to read outside of class hours, SSIS organizes Reading Marathon every Saturday. The students are invited to attend the Reading Marathon in order for them to further enhance their reading skills and comprehension. Moreover, the Reading Marathon will also hone the students’ passion for reading.
Please be guided with the schedule of
the Reading Marathon given below:

The Reading Marathon will be held at the SSIS Library every Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m.
Let’s all make reading a habit!
After the successful
launching of Khan Academy
among the SSIS students and
parents as well, it has been
observed that the students
became more eager in
accomplishing the tasks given
to them in the Khan Academy.
The Valiant Knights became
more dedicated in developing
and mastering different Mathematical skills.
Indeed, Khan Academy contributes to the
students’ academic development and
provides a chance for the students to
develop a positive outlook of achieving their
goals with grit.
In the concept of growth mindset,
those students who fell short in meeting the
target in Khan Academy will be given a
chance to meet their targets and master the
necessary skills that they need while enjoying
their Semestral Break. The students are
required to continue accomplishing the
Khan Academy Assignments that the
Homeroom Advisers and Math teachers will
give before the Semestral Break.
The students’ performance in Khan
Academy serves as a Performance Task in
Mathematics. Thus, failure to meet their
targets will greatly affect their grades in the
said subject. The parents are also
encouraged to monitor their children’s
performance and progress in Khan
Academy during the Semestral Break.
All the Khan Academy assignments
given to the students will be checked when
they go back to school on November 14,
2017.

EMY Classes Boost Students’ Performance
GLOBAL MONTH CELEBRATION Continued from Page 1
The Extended Mid-Year (EMY) classes are FREE modes of
academic intervention that are meant to help students who
received failing marks- Low Average (LA) or Poor (P)- at the end
of the First Term to catch up with the subject matter/ lessons
and/or cope with academic demands of a specific subject.
Students who received LA or P marks at the end of the First Term
in any Core or Non-Core Subjects shall be required to attend the EMY classes. Moreover, for this Academic Year, the students in the Senior High School Department
who will not be able to reach their targets or goals set in the Khan Academy will also attend the
EMY classes.
Students who received failing marks in the Core Subjects shall be attending make-up
classes for one week following a special schedule while those who got failing marks in minor and
non-core subjects shall be given a performance task/ special project to work on and to be
submitted at the end of the week.
The program supports the Grit and Growth Mindset framework as it has been designed to
give students a chance to work on their academic deficiencies early so that they don’t worsen
and to help the students get back on track when they come back after their semestral break.
The EMY Classes will start on November 06, 2017 and will end on November 10, 2017. A letter
and/or the schedule will be given to those students who will attend the EMY classes.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

After which, the song “Heal the World” will be played and the
students will sing along still in their Peace Sign position in the field. At the
end of the song, the three presidents of the Student Council will release
doves symbolizing our hopes and prayers for the world peace. Each class
will also fly a pair of white balloons with a short banner of their prayer for
peace. These balloons will be released together with the doves.
2. The Anthology of Talents, History, and Stories Untold!
After the parade, all students will showcase their talents in dances and tableaus. Nursery, Junior, and
Senior Kinder, Grades 1 and 2 will show their talents in dancing to the tune of the songs from the country
that they represent while Grades 3 – 12 will make a narration of an important history in their assigned country
and will showcase them through different tableaus. Each presentation from Grades 3 – 12 will last for a
minimum of 3 minutes to a maximum of 5 minutes. This will be judged and the best tableau will be hailed the
winner. Continued on Page 4

3. Parental Guidance: A Journey to Discovery, A Symposium!
The Culminating day will end by a talk by some of the invited parents of different nationalities to
share their country of origin. They can talk anything about their country, culture, language, and anything
that they would like to showcase. The students will have to travel from one room to another to listen to
the parents’ sharing.
4. Opening Salvo: Global Morning Greetings!
Last October 9, Monday at 7:30 A.M. all SLGE teachers wore costumes of different countries. They
became the morning greeters of the Valiant Knights. The students greeted in different languages by
these teachers. This was part of the Opening Salvo for the Global Month Celebration. The Valiant Knights’
T.V. was utilized to play the 7 wonders of the world. This way, the students gained more awareness on
different languages and cultures of people around the world. The Opening Salvo Morning Greeting will
continue until October 26, Thursday.
5. The 2nd Ultimate Global Quiz Bee
The Ultimate Global Quiz Bee on its second year is all about geography. Part of the SLGE
curriculum is the world integration where the students learn something more about other countries
around the globe and compare them to their country of origin.
The following are the categories of the quiz bee:
Grades 1 – 2 Current Events
Grades 3 – 4 Asia Pacific and the Middle East
Grades 5 – 6 South East Asia
Grades 7 – 9 America
Grade 10 – 12 Europe and Australia
The elimination round happened last October 2 – 6. Elimination was done per class where the
teachers chose 6 representatives for the finals. The chosen representatives were paired off with another
student from another grade level to have 6 pairs who will compete for the finals from Grades 1 – 6. For
Grades 7 – 12, three (3) students were chosen per class to compete individually in the final round on
October 23 – 25, Monday – Wednesday. Three winners per category will be chosen.
6. Valiant Knight Global Movie
All Monday mornings of October, an SLGE teacher prepares the lobby for a video presentation of
any current events around the globe. It could be a trivia, a documentary, or any interesting facts on
people, cultures, and places around the globe. It will be shown from 7:30 – 8:30 A.M. The video
presentation will be flashed on the wall of the Senior Prep in the lobby or using the Valiant Knights’ T.V. It
will run on October 9, 16, and 23.
7. I Mark my World!
Last October 16, each student was asked to come to the lobby where they saw a giant world
map with the seven continents painted on a white cloth. Each student colored the map using their finger
prints. Each class was assigned to a certain continent which they colored through their finger prints. After
everyone painted the map, it will be framed and will be posted in the lobby to remind each student of
his/her unique place in the world.
8. My Country! My Flag!
The students in each class will create their own flag based on the country they represent during
their SLGE classes. The students can use colored paper and they can attach it to a sliding stick or a paper
straw. They will use this flag during the Parade of Nations on October 27.

OF THE WEEK
“Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense
of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human,
but also human to other forms of life.” – The Dalai Lama
It’s almost time for semestral break, when children look forward to
that great feeling of freedom, sleeping late, and simply hanging out.
But for the other students, semestral break can be a great way for them
to make a big splash for their future.
The problem with our students being so unproductive for a long
period of time over the semestral break, is that they fall out of the routines
we work so hard to teach them all year long! Learning never stops but if
left to be unproductive for too long, our students get the wrong idea
about learning believing that it only happens in school.
In order to keep them in positive routines over the summer and
ready to get back into school mode, we should be doing our best to
ensure they are productive, having a break from technology, getting out
and about and always learning. Now, as we're not going to be seeing our
students for a while, there is only so much we can do from a distance, but
we can still have an influence. Plus, parents will love you for showing you
continue to care about their children and giving them opportunities to
extend their learning over the break!
Here are 3 tips for how you can encourage your children to stay
productive over the semestral break:
1. Help your child make a list of goals. Guide your child as he or she
makes some realistic goals that he or she can envision himself or
herself carrying out during the year, and help him or her stay true to
them.
2. You can also set up a formal book reading challenge! Students
should make an effort to read a book in a field that they’re interested
in.
3. Let your child learn something new. A huge benefit of the technology
revolution is the ability to access free information at the palm of your
hands. This can be used in a positive way to learn new things. What
does your child want to learn but never had the time to do so? Many
websites offer free information on different languages, cultures and
scientific topics. While it is semestral break, keeping his or her brain
active is a great way to spend the vacation.
