Shingles Vaccine Shingles Vaccine is available, free of charge, for people over the age of 60 in Travis County. To schedule an appointment call 972-5520. Shots are available, by appointment during the week at the Far South, St. John’s and Rosewood-Zaragosa Clinics. What is shingles anyway? Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once a person has had chickenpox, the virus can live, but remain inactive, in your body. If it becomes active again, usually later in life, it can cause Shingles. If you’ve had chickenpox, there is no way to predict if you’ll get Shingles. What’s more, the inactive virus usually has no signs or symptoms. So shingles can appear at any time without warning. More information about shingles at http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/shingles/default.htm

Read and listen to animated books for kids online through the Austin Public Library’s TumbleBook Program! www.cityofaustin.org/library/kids.htm The TumbleBook Library provides online access to animated, talking picture books for children. TumbleBooks are created from existing books which have been licensed from children’s book publishers and converted to the TumbleBook format. The TumbleBook Library allows children to watch and listen to books read aloud or to read at their own pace. There are hundreds of titles to choose from! After reading a TumbleBook, kids can check out the Puzzles and Games section. Many of the books have text-related puzzles or spelling and memory games to play to help complete the reading experience! Some of the excellent features of this database include the ability to save your favorites online, create play lists, and search by

TumbleBook for the Kiddos!title, author, illustrator, publisher, language, or reading level. The TumbleBook Library also provides a language learning component

by offering animated, audio book selections in English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Chinese. Some books even have a special

Word Helper feature that lets a child click on individual words to sound them out. Each book in the collection includes access to editorial

reviews and accelerated reader information. Several classic titles are available for older children to read or listen to as well in the Tumble Readable and Audio Books sections. The TumbleBook Library is available online at all Library locations and from computers anywhere to Austin Public Library cardholders. Children can read anywhere, anytime! To find out more call telephone

reference at 974-7400 or stop by any APL location.

The Astronomy Department hosts three weekly viewing nights for the public while UT is in session. On Wednesday nights, the astronomy department sponsors free public star parties on the top roof of Robert Lee Moore Hall, which is located at the southeast corner of Dean Keeton (formerly 26th street) and Speedway. Once you reach RLM, take the elevators to the 17th fl oor and then follow the signs to the stairs up to the telescope. A typical night will include a planet or two, binary stars, star clusters and maybe one of the brighter nebulae. Because of the location of the building, it is diffi cult to see many of the fainter objects. Although we are using a 16 inch telescope, the skyglow still makes it diffi cult. For more information about Wednesday night viewings at RLM: http://outreach.as.utexas.edu/public/parties.html.

ALSO Every Friday and Saturday night the Department of Astronomy hosts free viewing on the 9” Painter Hall Telescope. Painter Hall is located at the corner of 24th street and Inner Campus Drive, just to the north of the UT Tower. To get to the telescope, take the elevator to the 5th fl oor and exit to the left. Follow the 5th fl oor hallway to the end and take the stair case through the double doors on the left. Once you reach the 6th fl oor, go to your right and follow the signs up to the telescope. Information on the Painter Hall viewings can be found at http://outreach.as.utexas.edu/public/painter.html Viewing times change throughout the year (due to changing times of sunset), so please check the pages noted above or call 512-471-5007 for current times. Planned times for March 19 through May 3 are 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Please call 512-232-4265 for weather cancellation information. This line is updated approximately 30-45 minutes before the scheduled start time.
