I am captivated by the patient stories I have heard and impressed by the advancements we have made for our community in this past year.

As I stepped into my new role as Chief Executive Officer in November, the Joint Commission announced its arrival. The Joint Commission accredits and certifies hospitals and health systems across the nation that commit to high quality and exceptional safety standards. The Commission’s surveyors carefully observed nearly every Barton facility over the course of a week. I watched Barton staff and physicians take on this challenge with confidence and ease; I felt proud and assured that I was part of an incredible team. I was not surprised when we received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.

A new chapter of health care is beginning, and I look forward to being a part of the Barton Health team in 2016. Locally, we’ve been working with key partners to

support and implement an action plan based on last year’s Community Health Needs Assessment. We are launching some great initiatives to reach our goal of increasing preventative medicine options and stronger population health management. We are also looking forward to celebrating the groundbreaking of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence, one of our many efforts to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of our community.

This Community Benefit Report highlights some of our efforts to provide consistently exceptional care in the clinical setting and in our community. We welcome your feedback and hope you see how your input is shaping the future of our organization. We’re listening to you and making positive changes for our patients and within our organization.

Sincerely,

Clint Purvance, MDPresident and Chief Executive Officer

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

BARTON HEALTH LAUNCHES PROTEUS DISCOVER In December, Barton Health launched a partnership with Proteus Digital Health and their Proteus Discover technology. Proteus Discover will help Barton’s care providers treat patients with uncontrolled hypertension through cutting-edge digital medicine. We are excited to be the first health system to implement Proteus Discover and even more excited to delve into data-driven communication to help foster better partnerships between our patients and their Barton providers.

WE’RE LISTENING – BARTON HEALTH SIMPLIFIES THE BILLING PROCESS The Price Estimator Tool gives patients an estimated cost ahead of time for a planned surgery or medical imaging service at Barton Memorial Hospital. • Paying upfront, patients can receive 20% off their out-of-

pocket costs for planned surgeries. • The Point of Service discount gives privately insured

patients 40% off their out-of-pocket costs for MRIs.• This brings a patient’s out-of-pocket costs much closer to

those at outpatient medical imaging facilities.

BARTON BUZZES WITH FIREFLY TECHNOLOGY This past year, Barton invested in the da Vinci® Firefly technology, an integrated fluorescence imaging capability that provides surgeons with real-time, image-guided identification of key anatomical landmarks using near-infrared technology.

ROBERT MALOFF CENTER OF EXCELLENCEThe community received a healthy serving of wellness from Lisa Maloff. The longtime local resident gave the Barton Foundation a $10 million gift in honor of her late husband to fund the building of a health, wellness and sports performance center.

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence will integrate wellness, sports performance, orthopedics and rehabilitation. The intention is to support each person on his or her journey to optimal health with a customized plan that supports preventative treatment and life improvement services in one location.

The Center of Excellence is expected to offer services in 2017.

ENHANCING SPORTS PERFORMANCEIn 2015, Barton expanded its Sports Performance Lab to include VO2 Max Resting Metabolic Rate Testing. A VO2 Max test measures the amount of oxygen that the body uses at different exertion levels to obtain optimal performance. Understanding your resting metabolic rate helps identify your body’s individual caloric need. The Sports Performance Lab also features the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill and programs like bike fitting, running analysis and customized orthotics.

TREATING THE WHOLE PERSON Our primary care providers offer patients integrative medicine techniques partnered with conventional care. Together, this complementary medical approach takes the whole person into account – body, mind and spirit – with the goal of improved health and wellness.

BRINGING YOU A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEPOur new sleep medicine program increases awareness on how sleep deficiencies impact health. The program includes overnight diagnostic visits followed by a sleep study consultation with our sleep specialist.

BARTON CONDUCTS SECOND COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENTA Community Health Needs Assessment, conducted in the spring of 2015, identified nine health issues in the South Shore community. The top three health concerns match those identified in the 2012 survey; mental health, substance abuse and access to health care. An action plan is being implemented to continue progress for the next three years.

In response, Barton has expanded its 2016 Health & Wellness Directory to include comprehensive community resources and services available for mental health, substance abuse, housing, wellness and other health needs beyond a doctor’s care.

To download the complete report, go to: bartonhealth.org/communityhealth.

MENTAL HEALTH FORUM MAKES STRIDES TOWARD BUILDING AWARENESSOn March 5, 2015, more than 80 individuals came together to create an action plan to address the gaps in mental health services in the South Lake Tahoe community.

At the Mental Health Forum, medical providers, law enforcement, social service groups, school district staff and community members shared their own stories, hopes and concerns about mental health issues. Attendees discussed professional and personal experiences at every age level and offered insights, ideas and commitments to addressing mental health.

Within six months, the action plan was implemented and many items were completed leading to improved awareness, access and resources.

MOM’S MORNING OUT FOR ALL WOMENBarton understands the importance of keeping moms well. On May 5th, nearly 200 women attended Mom’s Morning Out for pampering, education and exercise. For more information on this year’s event, visit bartonhealth.org/mom.

STUDENTS TRY SOMETHING NEW FOR THE WECAN! HEALTH AND FITNESS CHALLENGEWeCan! is a four-week fitness and nutrition challenge hosted at the local elementary schools twice a year. Physical education teachers from Bijou Elementary, Environmental Magnet School, Sierra House, Tahoe Valley and Zephyr Cove orchestrated the program by motivating students with weekly goals, and the cafeteria staff served fruits and vegetables to match the color of the week.

CAMP SUNRISE HELPS KIDS COPECamp Sunrise provides a safe place for children to talk about feelings and be with others who know what it is like to lose a parent, family member or close friend. The goal is to leave children with a more positive outlook for the future and provide resources for ongoing support. Camp Sunrise is generously funded in full by Barton Foundation.

BE HEALTHY, BWELLBWell is a community wellness program that focuses on wellness, prevention and early intervention. BWell includes health screenings and educational lectures that help the community stay healthy and save money. Patients can make appointments for Wellness Lab Draws, an echocardiogram (EKG) and/or lung cancer CT screenings at a reduced cost.

OUR HEALTH CARE FOUNDERS The Barton Health family expresses our deepest condolences to the Fry family on the passing of Dr. Paul J. Fry, II, in 2015.

Known by many as “Papa Fry,” Dr. Fry was a leading orthopedic physician at Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley for nearly 50 years. He opened Tahoe Fracture Clinic in 1964 and helped elevate the orthopedic program to a nationally recognized level. He played an integral role in

the development of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence.

Dr. Fry touched many both personally and professionally through his philanthropic efforts. He was recognized as Philanthropist of the Year in 2012 and generously donated $1 million to the Barton Foundation upon his passing.

Also in 2015, two longtime physicians, Gregory Bergner, MD, and Paul Marlowe, MD, retired from Barton Urgent Care. Both practiced medicine in Lake Tahoe for over 30 years and were responsible for providing exceptional care to our community. The Barton Health family wishes them both the best.

SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY RECIPIENT 2015 LISA MALOFF

IT WAS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT WE PRESENTED LISA MALOFF WITH THE SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY AWARD AT THE 2015 GALA. WE HONORED LISA FOR HER MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE SOUTH LAKE TAHOE COMMUNITY AND THE SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE SHE HAS HAD ON BARTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, PAST AND PRESENT.Lisa and her husband, Robert, moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1958. Lisa was a self-described “Girl Friday” for many of the performers at Harrah’s and even took some months off to travel the world with pop singer Kay Starr. But Lisa’s real passion was the South Lake Tahoe community.

As a founding member of the Barton Auxiliary, Lisa was instrumental in raising funds to build Barton Memorial Hospital. She produced a glamorous fashion show (in which she also modeled), helped start The Attic Thrift Store, worked on the Holiday Faire and even worked some of the holes at the golf tournament. Lisa has long been a tireless force for Barton and the health of our community.

LISA’S PASSIONS EXTEND WELL BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE HOSPITAL AND INCLUDE SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, EDUCATION AND POLITICS.

She was a charter member of the Cancer League and also helped with Meals on Wheels. More recently, she sponsored a K-9 police dog named Ricci for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and made a generous donation to help Lake Tahoe Community College reach their vision of becoming a four-year university. Lisa was also a member of the Republican Women’s Club and even helped with voter registration.

Lisa’s dear husband of 63 years, Robert Maloff, passed away in 2011. In his memory, Lisa decided to make a lasting difference in the history of our health system and our community. She gave a transformational gift to fund the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence, which is slated to open in 2017.

We are truly thankful for the difference that Lisa Maloff has made in the future health of our community.

3,871 people attended the seventh annual Festival of Trees and Lights, and 60 FAMILIES in need enjoyed an evening of fun and festivity thanks to the generosity of donors. 22 WREATHS AND TREES were made by Barton Health employees and volunteers, NINE TREES WERE DECORATED by local schools and 11 WERE DECORATED BY AREA DESIGNERS.

29 DOCTORS AND EMPLOYEES DONATED THEIR TIME at the Teddy Bear Hospital, where 2,000 CHILDREN left happy after receiving their very own teddy bear.
