June is a fun month. It marks both the unofficial and official beginning of

Summer. The last day of school marks the unofficial beginning of Sum-

mer for most families. Summer vacation plans are made and experi-

enced. Graduations are recognized and celebrated (June 3rd is Gradua-

tion Sunday this year). College plans and preparations are finalized.

Weddings (and anniversaries) are celebrated. Change is in the air!

We see the changes in nature, as trees leaf out, flowers bloom, birds can

be heard singing (and so can lawn mowers…). The days grow longer

and warmer. We are coaxed out of the house and onto the deck or patio,

into the garden or off to the beach.

Our church schedule changes. From Memorial Day weekend through

Labor Day Weekend, we will have only one worship service (10 am on

Sundays). The services will alternate between Conservative and Tradi-

tional. Although children’s Sunday School takes a break in the summer,

Children’s Church will “pick up the slack” as it offers year-round Chris-

tian education and formation. Be sure to thank the Children’s Church

volunteers for their faithful, faith-filled work. Several Adult Christian Edu-

cation opportunities will continue on Sundays and throughout the week.

Mid-month in June, we celebrate Father’s Day and express our appreci-

ation of the men in our lives who have been a source of God’s love and

leading in our lives. This year’s Mission Trip will take place the last

week of June. Our mission team will travel to Midwest Distribution Cen-

ter in Illinois and will serve in a variety of capacities. Their efforts will

benefit people near and far whose lives have been impacted by natural

disasters.

We hear about the “lazy days of summer” and might expect a slower

pace during the summer months, but for many of us the busyness tends

to be year-round. Hopefully we can find ways to break from the routine

and take advantage of the long, sunny days. (Virtually any summer ac-

tivity beats shoveling snow, in my opinion!)

Whatever your summer plans might be, whatever changes summer

brings to your life or routines, be sure to attune yourself to God’s pres-

ence. Recognize God’s blessings amidst milestones and the mundane,

in life’s mountaintop and valley experiences. Strive to be a living remind-

er of God’s presence as you intentionally reach out to others in Jesus’

name; supporting them through transitions and tragedies.

Keep up the Good Work!

Camp News

Summer Camping 2018

Spring-like temperatures bring thoughts of summer camp and the blessings it gives to a child/youth. The United Methodist Men offer scholarship funds to assist in attending camps primarily offered by United Methodist camps in our state.

The benefit a child/youth receives from the camp experience can’t be over-stated. This is the greatest gift you could give a child/youth. Some have never heard of Jesus while others have, but are hearing it in a new setting without normal distractions. Please be on the lookout for children/youth who could benefit from a week at camp.

The two main camping opportunities are:

Michigan Area Camps,

Retreats and Campgrounds

Website: umcamping.org

Bay Shore Camp

Website: bayshorecamp.org

The United Methodist Men will assist with 50% of the cost of most camps or more on a case by case basis. Both of the above noted camping opportunities have on line as well a mail registrations with booklets. Depending on the camp registration and deposit requirements, different forms must be completed to properly sign up for a given camp. Booklets are available on the table in the Narthex or in the church office.

Please contact Clayton Osburn (248-879-6371) or see him on any Sunday for assistance or any questions.

BBUMC Senior Group Presents

“4 GVN”

LIVE

Barbershop Quartet Barbershop Music is a style of a cappella, or unaccompanied vocal music characterized by con-

sonant four-part chords for every melody note in a predominantly homophonic texture. Each of

the four parts has its own role. Barbershop music is famous and renowned for its “ringing”

chords, produced by singing a particular combination of notes that are perfectly tuned. This ef-

fect is so powerful and delightful to the listeners that it has been called “the angel’s voice,” and

has been described in almost religious terms.

UMW Rummage Sale Success

THANK YOU to everyone who made this year’s UMW rummage sale a HUGE SUCCESS!!! We earned

over $9,000 for the many missions supported by the UMW. The remaining items were donated to Grace

Center of Hope, Vietnam Veterans, Baldwin Center and Salvation Army.

There were over 75 volunteers that worked throughout the week, plus all who donated the tremendous

number of items to sell and those who supported the sale by purchasing items. Everyone’s contribution

was greatly appreciated. It was truly a week filled with Fun and Fellowship.

Thank you to all who helped in the kitchen preparing lunch, setting up & cleaning up all week...you are

appreciated so very much!

“God is so good! Thank you all for all of your donations to the 4th-octave bell fund! We have reached our goal and the order has been placed! Plan on an enhanced worship expe-rience involving more ringers coming this fall! Many thanks to so many of our musicians for their help in raising funds, selling tickets, ushering and reception help for the Classical Bells Concert on April 22nd! It was truly a wonderful evening of amazing bell-playing and it really showed our Big Beaver Extravagant Hospitality! It’s that time of year for our annual Summer Series of Special Music here at Big Beaver! We have some beautiful soloists that will be gracing our worship services, so don’t miss out!”

Weekend Backpacks

The school year is coming to a close and the last of the weekend food bags will be deliv-

ered soon. A HUGE thank you to Debi Avery and Linda Bowden for packing and deliver-

ing the bags each week, to Melodie Conley for filling in for Debi or Linda and to every-

one who has donated to the program!

We are going to be continuing to provide food bags during the 2018 – 2019 school year

to 12-14 students at a local Troy elementary school. Please help us to stock the cabinet

over the summer with items with long expiration dates so that the initial cost to start

up in the fall will be less. Picking up 1 -2 items each time you shop will make a big

difference! The following items would be greatly appreciated:

• Canned pasta

• Condensed soups

• Canned chili

• Chicken and beef ramen noodles

• Tuna pouches

• Canned chicken

• Vienna sausages

• Peanut Butter and Jelly combination jars (no glass jars please)

Prayer Breakfast The Troy Community Coalition recently hosted their 24th annu-al Prayer Breakfast on May 4. It was an inspiring event that took place at the San Marino Club in Troy. One of the reasons the Coalition hosts the event is to celebrate our diverse faith community, with over 330 attendees from Troy and surrounding communities. After breakfast, prayers were offered for sectors of the community. The music was performed by Kris Held and Katie Priskorn. Keynote speaker Gina Kell Spehn provided an inspirational message. She is from New Day Foundation for Families. Big Beaver UMC is a proud sponsor of this vital ministry.

Lord, we lift up Christian men everywhere and pray that Your Spirit of grace and truth may rest and remain on each one.

We pray that these men may grow in grace and in knowledge of Christ Jesus their Lord, and that they become strong in the Lord and in His mighty strength – and not rely on their own abilities but rest in Him alone.

May the beautiful character of the Lord Jesus be increasingly reflected in each one and may all men throughout the world be godly witnesses to the truth of the gospel both in their own home and with others, with whom they come in contact.

Build up the body of Christ we pray with an army of Christian men who will become a reflection of the Lord Jesus so that they may grow into mighty men of God.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
