Refugee Resettlement Committee News
If you had to flee your home with little warning, what would you pack in your suitcase?
When fleeing life-threatening conflict or violence, refugee families often leave with what they can carry in a suitcase--a change of clothes, a favorite family keepsake, a toy or other pastime to pacify a child, perhaps a family photograph, and a stash of food. They may travel by foot, bus, or boat through desert, jungle, or rough seas to find the safety of a refugee camp. Here they may linger for months or years living in a tent city, relying on others for their food, clothing, shelter, and medical assistance. Hopefully, they will be offered a permanent home and a chance to rebuild their lives—perhaps in a neighboring country, or a country across the continent or even across the ocean.
The New American Services program of Samaritas (formerly Lutheran Social Services of Michigan), located in Troy on Big Beaver Road, indicates the greatest need for the arriving refugees in Metro Detroit is to have a warm and comfortable bed to spend their first night, items for the kitchen and bathroom, and of course, food. Upon hearing this, BBUMC members jumped into action, led by coordinators Linda Thornton and Pam Vandekerkhove.
BBUMC’s Refugee Resettlement Committee invited members to donate new items by means of a Signup Genius computer registry. The first Welcome Box was quickly filled by fifteen BBUMC volunteers who donated four new comforters, four blankets, four sets of sheets, six pillows, an alarm clock, and six complete towel sets. Pastor Gregg Mayberry offered a blessing over the gifts and Linda Thornton and Becky Thomas delivered the essential household items to Samaritas. Zena, the receptionist there, helped unload the car, expressing her excitement that everything was NEW and that the refugee families would be so pleased!
With the immediate success of completing the first box, the committee is now assembling a second box, and you are invited to participate. Follow this link to see the items that are still needed: SignUpGenius Refugee Welcome Box. Or, please contact Linda Thornton at [email protected] or 248- 879-6806.
Please stay tuned for additional opportunities in which you can provide life-changing hope to refugees who are coming to the Troy-area within the next year. Through the work of the Refugee Resettlement Committee and the support of the members of the congregation, BBUMC will address the needs of families through prayers, in-kind donations of household and personal items, volunteer time, financial assistance, and friendship. You are encouraged to ask questions, be informed, participate, and change someone’s world. For additional information and resources, please contact Refugee Resettlement Committee Chair Michelle Haight at [email protected].
Help express “Welcome Home” to weary travelers who have come to be our neighbors.

our lives while still honoring God. Cost of book $5. Come and enjoy a
time of fellowship and support with other mothers. We encourage moms
of all ages to come. Know a friend that would benefit as well – bring

Books about Refugees: Discussion Opportunities
Children in Refugee Resettlement: See, Read, Discuss
What Is It Like to Be a Refugee? As BBUMC engages in volunteer efforts to assist refugee families, perhaps you are curious to know what life must be like as a refugee, especially for a child. What is it like to see, hear, and experience warfare in your own community, to be driven from your home, and from your school or career, to be separated from your family and country to seek shelter as a refugee, ultimately fleeing to another country? How do you survive, keep your family together, manage day-to-day living, deal with a foreign culture and language, and somehow create normalcy in a world turned upside-down?
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is currently displaying this Where the Children Sleep photo exhibit on its website, a vivid, difficult portrayal of refugee children around the world.
For Adults and Youth: Join fellow BBUMC members in a discussion about the book Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites with the Sister She Left Behind (2005), a memoir written by Luong Ung, a Cambodian-American. The book chronicles the separate life experiences of Ung as she escapes the Cambodian genocide and adjusts to life in the U.S., and her sister Chou and other surviving family members who remained in Cambodian during the warfare between Vietnamese troops and the Khmer Rouge. Through their story, covering the period 1980-2003, you will learn of life and death decisions, assimilation to new cultures, family bond, and human kindness.
A BBUMC-wide discussion of the book will be held on Sunday, November 20 at 10:00 am in the BBUMC Chapel. Small groups such as Sunday school classes, prayer groups, and UMW circles are welcome to read the book and host their own discussion group at a convenient meeting time. Copies of the book are available to borrow through BBUMC library and a copy is available at Troy Public Library. Questions? Please contact Betty Bernard at [email protected] or 248-524-2751.
For Middle Schoolers: The youth in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Sunday school class will be reading A Long Walk to Water (2010), by Linda Sue Park. This is the story of two 11-year old Sudanese, children. Salva is a boy fleeing civil war in 1985 in search of his family, food and water, and a safe place to stay, and ultimately resettling in Upstate New York. Nya is a girl residing in Sudan village in 2008. Learn of Salva and Nya’s stories with teachers Dianne Osburn and Carl Shelton as they lead the discussion in BBUMC classroom 10 at 10:00 am this fall. For additional information, please contact Dianne at [email protected] or 248-709-6075.
For a variety of additional books about refugees, please see the display shelf outside of the BBUMC library and in the Library itself, as well as in the Children’s Library.
See the photos. Read the books. View the overwhelming world-wide refugee crisis through the eyes of children, who have found themselves the least of these.
Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:40)
