July & August 2016 Banner THE PASTOR’S PAGE Writing this Pastor’s Page is one of the last things I will be doing from my office in Caro. It seems like there are boxes everywhere and soon virtually everything I own will be in them and headed for Troy. I’ve heard it said that it is the transitions that are the hard part about any change. I believe that is true. I am anxious (in every sense of the word) to begin my ministry with you at Big Beaver. I am looking forward to meeting you and working together in ministry and I find myself a bit apprehensive about all the changes and the unknowns. I am not looking forward to bidding farewell to my Church Family and friends here in Caro. This Sunday (June 19 th ) is sure to be an emotional day, both during the worship service and during my Farewell Party. I don’t know about you, but it’s not a pretty sight when I get emotional—red, blotchy face, bloodshot eyes and a choked-up voice… I am looking forward to getting settled in in Troy, becoming acquainted with my new Church Family, getting a feel for the hopes, dreams and vision for the future of Big Beaver UMC. I have heard so many good things about the church. Both Terry Euper and Jack Mannschreck (former pastors at Big Beaver) are friends of mine and speak of their time here in glowing terms. Pastor Huseltine has been very gracious in this time of transition; including me in the interview/hiring process of our new church secretary, Kimberly Lucier, and inviting me to attend a recent Staff Meeting. The one constant amidst all of the endings and beginnings, changes and transitions associated with this time in my life is God’s abiding presence and activity. Throughout the Bible, whenever someone is about to leave behind the familiar and step out in faith toward the unfamiliar and unknown, God has offered the same assurance: “I will be with you wherever you go”. Jesus assured his followers, “I am with you always, even until the end of the age”. I am claiming those promises for myself (and I encourage you to do the same!). This is a time of transition and uncertainty for you, too. Keep an eye out for evidence of God’s presence and activity throughout this time. Be aware of and responsive to opportunities to be a source of God’s presence to others who might be feeling anxious; living reminders that God is with us. Soon we will be discovering, together, what God has in store for us as individuals, as families and as a Church Family. Looking forward to it! LIBRARY NEWS / SUMMER READING!!!!! Summer is a great time for reading and how lucky we are to have such a convenient library right in our church. We house adult books ranging from Fiction to Religious offerings to Biographies, History, Art, Science and Health. Due to a wonderful congregation helping our collection to grow by donating books for all ages, we find ourselves bursting at the seams. Children may find books for their use in the Sunday School corridor. There are no due dates, only reminders after 6 months. Come to church on Sunday, check out a book and return when done on another visit to Big Beaver.

NEW BOOKS ON THE DISPLAY TABLE OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY Let’s start with our new mysteries: Beyond the Rose by JoAnn Fla ner y . This my stery set in Michig a n cover s ma ny emotions and will keep you on you toes. It is written by the cousin of Susan Kuhn, one of our members. In Gray Mountain we are taken to a dangerous coal mining situation, that leads to a courtroom where author John Grisham excels. The Trust by N. Vonneg ut is a rea l thr iller tha t w ill g ive y ou a fun r ide into some unusua l situations. The Inn at Lake Devine by Elinor Lipma n w ill ma ke y ou la ug h until y ou suspect tha t this Inn is run to exclude those of a particular religion. The last 3 fiction books on our list this month are simply about families dealing with everyday decisions, let-downs and celebrations. Two of the authors you will recognize as well known writers. Patchwork Planet by Anne Tyler and Blue by Danielle Steel are character driven and will keep you hanging on until the end. The Weight of Heaven by Thrity Umrigar introduces many of us to living in India. ADULT NONFICTION Furst Darling of the Morning by T. Umr ig a r is her biog ra phy of childhood in India . Finding God in Unexpected Places by P. Ya ncy is a book of medita tions to keep ha ndy a nd enjoy. We house the Youth section of our library along with the adult books. The following books will appeal to middle school and high school students. The Gospel According to Harry Potter by Connie Nea l Chicken Soup for the Soul / Teens Talk Middle School by J. Ca nfield When the Beginning Began by Julius Lester . Please check out all books and return them to the return box below the card catalog. Any questions call Betty Bernard 248-524-2751.

Calling on our gardeners

There are two opportunities for our members who

enjoy plants. These are behind the scene ministries

that might be just what you would like to do. We are

signing up teams of two that will volunteer to pull

weeds from our memorial garden. A different team

working every other week should be able to keep our

garden weed free. A sign-up sheet is on the table by

the care cards. We are looking to present our first time

guests with a plant. We need a team to help keep a

supply of plants available for our “Welcome

Station” volunteers. See members of our Membership

& Outreach Committee for more details.

"Have you ever thought of being a part of a musical group? Has it been awhile since you last sung in a choir? Don't think you have any musical talent? Don't have much time? Well, think again! There are many opportunities to worship God through our music ministries here at Big Beaver! Our Chancel Choir will start again on September 8 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and we would love to have you join us! Come as often as you can as we rehearse songs three weeks in advance. The Vesper Bells are an advanced bell choir that meets on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and are always looking for subs who would like to play occasionally. The Chapel Bells are our beginning bell choir that meet from 6:00-6:45 p.m. Thursday evenings, starting on September 8.

We still need a few people who can "count to four", love to have fun, and would like to make music!"

Big Beaver Church Family Thank you so much for

thinking of me and sending me the lovely card with all your signatures. I feel so blessed to have friends at the church thinking me and my well-being while I am home-bound. Blessings to all of you.

Thank you, Aleatha Lenderman

We want to express our thanks for your prayers, cards, and many comforting words after the passing of William Lamphere. It is times like this that we truly appreciate our church family.

Jerry Lamphere

On behalf of Beaumont Children’s Hospital patients, families and staff, please accept our sincere thank you for your donation of art kits. The donation came at such a great time, when our supply was low. We appreciate and value your generosity. Your generous donation for our pediatric patients is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely, Michelle Meschini

Thank you for the many cards, prayers & thoughts during my time of sadness.
