I rang Karen at the Buck House as I do every month and I was sad to hear this month that Alan has passed away; he had been struggling with his health on and off for a while now.

You’ll all probably know or know of Alan, as he’s been running the Buck House in Bangor on Dee for what would be 24 years this year, and I think if my memory serves me right they celebrated their

your life, your home, your community.

60th wedding anniversary also in recent years. Not many people can say that these days!

Gradually over the years more of the family have become involved in the business, but despite saying that I get the impression it’s more of a home. I would like to express my sincere condolences to Karen and her family, and I’m sure I speak for the local community too. It was a beautiful day last week for the funeral and I hope that helped the difficult day.

Karen was telling me about the arrangements and they sounded lovely with lots of people coming to pay their respects.

It’s not often I’m lost for words, but I really don’t know what to say and would just like to offer the family a big hug and let’s hope we have a lovely month of September in memory of Alan.

All the best, Jill

John Willie Bennett, George Humphrey’ grandfather, aged 37 years, was employed by his mother Mrs Bennett as a brewer in the family-owned Dee Brewery in Whitchurch Road now occupied by a builder’s office and the Dental Centre. In February 1907 at about lunchtime both his brothers, Alfred and Joseph heard him call out for help. They went to see what he wanted and found the deceased in the brewery in a distressed state. He said that he had been standing on a wet board and had slipped and fallen into the tub of boiling mash but had managed to get himself out.

One of the boys went for Mr Reginald Parry of the Red Lion to help carry him to his home and telegraphed for Doctor Edwards Jones. Mr Parry with the help of Mr Foster of the Royal Oak dressed his injuries to the best of their ability with linseed oil. By the time the doctor arrived they had got him into bed and his wife and PC Nelson were in attendance. He found the deceased was in a complete state of collapse being scalded from head to foot and gave him stimulants and administered opiates to alleviate the intense pain from which he was suffering but did not dress the wounds as that had already been done. He sent for a nurse and remained with him all afternoon until he died at 6.30pm.

An inquest into the circumstances of the

death was held two days later by Dr W

Aylmer Lewis, coroner, with a jury of whom

Mr Thomas Williams was foreman. Mr

Hilditch, H.M. Inspector of Factories, was

present. The jury was told that the mash tub

was about five feet deep but was not full

on the day of the accident. Alfred Bennett

giving evidence said that his brother, who

was perfectly sober at the time, had been

in the habit of sitting on the edge of the vat

whilst brewing to stir the contents. Joseph

Bennett said that he had worked with the

deceased to fill the vat and he had left him

only for a few minutes before. On hearing

him call out he returned to the brew house

and found him standing by the vat scalded

and, with help, carried him into the house

and at once undressed him and wrapped

him in sheets and blankets.

Mr Hilditch, had visited the brewery and

thought the place was dangerous and had

recommended improvements but he said

that as no workmen were employed a the

brewery, only members of the family, he

had no authority to compel them to do

any repairs or make structural alterations.

The jury returned a verdict of ‘Accidental

death’ and made a strong recommendation

that the alterations outlined by Mr Hilditch

should be carried out.

Is it really twenty years since the first Festival of Speed was held at Goodwood by the Earl of March? What tremendous amounts of pleasure it has provided for enthusiasts from all over the world who have revelled in the abundance of fabulous machinery to be seen, and being able to mingle with the many famous people who drove them. The roar of the vintage engines of those leviathans of the track are a complete contrast to the scream of the modern F1 engines as these very special cars and motorcycles are driven up the famous hill, and a friendly wave from someone like Stirling Moss or John Surtees to you in particular as they drive past in some famous car that has made history, will be a moment you will never forget!

However, there is one section of the festival organised by Cartier which they call ‘Style et Luxe’, where some of the world’s most beautiful and stylish cars are displayed, many of which costing millions of pounds- if their private owners ever deigned to sell them! Yes, I know that modern stylish and luxurious cars are made just a short distance away at Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood factory, but the variety of wonderful models spanning so many years to be seen in the Cartier collection tell about cars with such purity of line and meticulous workmanship, expressing the imaginations of famous designers, and being more like sculpted works of art rather

than just a means of transport!

Streamlining! Oh how we all longed to see such bodywork on post war British cars, once the factories had begun producing them again instead of aeroplanes and tanks etc. I suppose the 1938 Morris 8 Series E had shown small signs of this with its curved radiator and fared-in headlamps!

The trouble was that all the Hollywood films we saw seemed to have these large and exotic streamlined cars gliding around, such as the 1949 Delahaye 175 S Roadster, pictured above. The curved backed Standard Vanguards and Jowett Javelins couldn’t compare with that! Come to think of it, neither could we! Where would we be able to park such a monster, especially with its dismal turning circle due to its spatted front wheels! Still, we were learning fast and in the ‘50s and ‘60s when we produced the Bentley Continental and the E-Type Jaguar, it was the turn of the Americans to admire our cars for their style, and superb engineering!

There is no doubt that the world has seen some beautiful cars since then, but if you really want to see the most exotic masterpieces ever built, you will always find them at Cartier’s ‘Style et Luxe’ enclosure at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Wrexham pupils are celebrating success to-day with their GCSE and vocational exam-ination results. 95% of pupils have achieved the Level 1 Threshold. This is in line with previous years’ high performance.More than three quarters (77%) of pupils in Wrexham schools achieved the Level 2 Threshold (at least 5 passes at A*-C), which is a significant increase on last year’s perfor-mance of 67%. Just over half of our students achieved the Level 2+ Threshold indicator which means at least 5 A*-C passes includ-ing English or Welsh (first language) and Maths. This is a significant increase on last year’s performance of 45%.In total, 1211 pupils sat a broad range of GCSE, vocational and skills qualifications.Councillor Michael Williams, Lead Member for Children’s Services and Education, said:“These are very pleasing results and I con-gratulate our pupils for their diligence and

hard work. I wish them well as they move to the next stage of their lives be it further education, training or employment. We will continue to support our schools as togeth-er we aspire to achieve educational excel-lence for young people in Wrexham.”

John Davies, Wrexham’s Head of Life Long Learning said:

“I warmly congratulate our young people on all their successes. With support from their teachers, parents and carers, they have worked very hard indeed to achieve this level of performance. I am very pleased to see the significant improvement in the num-ber of grades achieved at A* - C, particular-ly in the very important subjects of English or Welsh and Mathematics. There have also been many outstanding achievements by students of all abilities and significant im-provements made by some schools.“

Once in a blue moon your local newspaper salutes a local resident who has reached the grand-old age of 100. Yet by all accounts, local papers may soon have to devote an entire weekly page to people living to 100 because we are living much longer. In the past, as people grew older their investment portfolios became risk averse. They reduced their exposure to equities and generally avoided investments that put their capital at risk. But times are changing and this may not be the most suitable strategy to adopt.Working longer could mean that turning on the income tap may not necessarily be given such a high priority for many in their early-50s, as there may still be a need to accrue capital. Many people will have an assortment of different pension schemes having worked for different employers, while many will have also made the most of their Pep, Tessa and Isa tax allowances of the years. They need to turn this non-pension money into an income stream that might be needed for another 30 to 40 years. There are also tax implications to consider, be it capital gains, inheritance tax or income tax liabilities. Many people assume that once they have hung up their working boots they will never have to pay tax again. This isn’t the case – tax still has to be paid. Investors need to ensure they are using all their available tax-free allowances and

ensuring they are paying as little tax as they need. After all you work hard, paying your taxes all your life, you don’t want to be needlessly paying HMRC after you have retired. The traditional ways of planning for retirement are past their sell-by date. How lavish, comfortable or tough your retirement years will be is going to be down to you. That’s why it is important to get planning early. There is nothing stopping you from getting a clear view of your current position by establishing what your likely state pension entitlement would be. It is also worth contacting the pension trustees of your current and previous employers, who will be able to provide pension forecasts, as will the companies managing any private pension plans. It is great to think that we have a higher chance of living longer, but it means that we have to make our money work harder while we can – and the sooner you start the better.

I have a colleague, a police officer from Wrexham Station who is going to Uganda and has sent us this e mail asking for help. Please read the below and if you can offer any old football shifts they would be gladly appreciated. You can give me a ring or leave a message for me to collect them and I will pass them on to Matt. Thank you in anticipation. Read on ….

In November 2013 I will be travelling to Uganda on behalf of a charity called Teams4U working with young children who suffer from a number of things including poverty and HIV/AIDS.

As part of the work carried out we visit primary schools and local children who are given health checks, treatment for on going health problems and given advice.

Last year I took over 50 donated football shirts to give out to the children which were all gratefully received. The only problem is that they ran out too quickly.

If anyone has any old football shirts regardless of size, age or condition that they would like to donate I would be very grateful. Thanks Matt PC SUBACCHI 2812

Further to last months plea to lock up your valuables, there has been a slight increase in rural crime recently and we are urging you all to be extra vigilant and to make sure your garages, sheds, cars, bikes are all locked up and your valuables kept safe. Ideally it is a good idea to mark your valuable property with your postcode using a UV pen and make a note of any serial numbers of items such as bikes and power tools and also to photograph them to allow us to identify recovered stolen property. UV pens can be bought from any DIY store and are not expensive.

Remember, genuine callers will not mind waiting. It’s your home, You don’t have to let anyone in.

1. If in doubt, keep them out. It sounds simple but if you don’t let someone in – they will go away. Don’t let them pressure you into opening the door.

2. Be prepared. Be in control. Think about what to say to doorstop cold callers in advance. And keep a list of key contact numbers near your phone so you can check out legitimate callers. Ask all other unwanted callers to go away.

3. Call a neighbour or the police. Contact a local relative or nominated neighbour who can help verify a cold caller if you think someone in a rogue trader, call the Police on 101. To report a distraction burglar or rogue trader who has taken your money and is still in the area – call 999. Remember, identity cards may not be genuine. Always check with the service provider or company by telephoning them using a telephone number from a trusted source – not from a number on the ID card.

essential gardening

FLOWER GARDEN• Buy spring bulbs for next year. Most bulbs,

including daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and small bulbs are best planted this month or in early October. Tulips are better planted towards the end of October

• Give evergreen hedges a final trim to ensure they are neat for the winter

• Now’s the time to go around your garden collecting seeds from perennials and annuals. Collect seed heads in paper bags and leave them in a warm place to dry for a few days, before cleaning and storing in small envelopes. Some gardens that open to the public offer see-collecting days – a great way to find something unusual. Most seeds are best sown in spring

• Sweet pea lovers may find that sowing seed in autumn produces stronger plants. Do not soak the seeds as they are liable to rot. Use Seed and Potting Compost and sow the seeds in root trainers, sweet peas tubes, pots or trays. It has been found that dark coloured seeds germinate well in fairly damp compost, but pale seed require compost that is only just moist.

• Cover the containers with glass or put them in a propagator and keep at around 15 C (59 F). When the seedlings appear transfer them to a cold frame. Pinch out the growing tips when the plants are about 10 cm (4 inches) high

ROSES

• Shrub roses and ramblers can easily be propagated from stem cuttings at this time of year. Take a length of stem about 30cm (12 inches) long and trim it off just below the bottom leaf. Remove the soft tip just above a root joint. Take off all but the top two or three leaves and push the cuttings into a well dug trench in the garden to about half their length. They should be left for 12 months to root and develop

• If rambler and climbing roses have got a bit out of hand, spend a bit of time tying them in

LAWN

• Aerate the lawn with a fork or special tool then apply Scotts Autumn Lawn Food to nourish your lawn through the winter months

• You can continue to re-seed bare patches on your lawn. It’s also a good time of year to prepare the ground for sowing a new lawn, while the earth is still warm.

FRUIT GARDEN

• Cover autumn-fruiting blackberries and raspberries with netting to keep off the birds, but check daily to ensure no animals or birds get trapped

• Pick early varieties of apples as soon as they’re ripe and eat them – they won’t keep.

An innovative new centre providing support and treatment for adults with issues in their lives including substance misuse and homelessness has been officially opened by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr I. David Bithell MBE.The Ty Croeso is a purpose built premises located on Grosvenor Road in Wrexham. The building is owned by the Wallich Homeless charity which provides supported accommodation for homeless individuals. Ty Croeso helps support individuals overcome their problems by providing a range of inter agency service at a central location. Clients can access services at the centre including breakfast clubs, drop-in services, advice and information and support groups work. Structured treatment from nurses and health professionals are also at the centre eliminating the need for clients to access different services at different sites. The project has been funded though the Welsh Government’s Substance Misuse Capital Grant, following a successful bid from Wrexham’s community Safety Partnership’s Substance Misuse Action Team. Geoff Lang. Acting Chief executive of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Chair of the Wrexham Substance Misuse Action Team said: "The Ty Croeso project is a clear example of statutory, voluntary sector and service users working effectively together to improve access to care. I am very pleased to see this

developmental work come to fruition, as it forms part of our local strategy to provide services that are responsive to the local needs of our community.“Ty Croeso will provide a range of substance misuse services under one roof and will have far reaching benefits. It is a clear priority for Wrexham’s Substance Misuse Action Team.”Antonia Watson, Chief Executive of The Wallich added:“The development is a prime example of collaborative working, both from the development phase and the day to day operations. Service users have welcomed the excellent facilities, and the integrated approach has really benefited those residents living in Wallich accommodation who access the on-site facilities.” Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships and Collaboration said:“This is an excellent example of how partners can work together to provide access to good quality care and advice for some of the most vulnerable people of society.“Ty Croeso is an excellent facility and the response from service users has been positive. The benefits of providing such services for adults with complex problems including substance misuse are far reaching not just for the individuals themselves, but for their family and the wider community.”
