Well done Wrexham! I don’t even follow football but not even me could fail to notice the massive achievement by Wrexham FC, and the winning of the FA Trophy just the other week. Even listened to it on the radio! Not only have they not been to Wembley for 149 years, but over the last few years they have also had financial and management problems with takeovers etc.
In my naivety I thought all football clubs had oodles of money, all this sponsorship, tv rights to air matches, ticket sales etc etc, but not the case. Quite often we see football clubs going bankrupt, into administration or struggling. So it’s even more of an amazing achievement that they have persevered, not thrown the towel in, and pulled off this win. Whilst the prize money looked quite nice I’m sure this won’t last long in running a football club terms, but it’s definitely a help and not to be sniffed at. I believe the club was also taken over a few years ago and is now being managed by a team of its supporters, so their achievement is all the more impressive bearing this in mind. I hear that 70 coach load of supporters went down to support them too. Fantastic! I even had a call from a 93 year

old lady on the Monday asking if I could help her order some extra Evening Leaders so she could send them with the coverage to her family. And then we had the annual Cambridge and Oxford boat race, won by Oxford to make up for last year , followed by Andy Murray winning in Miami to move up to no 2 world ranking. All good news on the sport front.
Hope you all had a lovely bank holiday weekend too. Let’s hope that’s the last of the snow and the sun is on its way. Probably an old wives tale but I’m clinging onto the fact that it might be right all the same, and that’s if we have a cold long winter we’re in for a lovely summer. Mind you anything’s better than last year’s summer and all that rain surely? There was rumour of a heat wave in May. I can just imagine some snow still being left as the heat wave arrives! That’s an interesting thought!
So that’s me off to get some sun lotion and a straw hat. See you next month when we’ll be complaining it’s too hot, as if we would dare!

Race day was always a big event for Bangor with every farm and large house called upon to provide stabling for the horses and places within 2 miles or so of the racecourse offered board and lodging for the stable lads and jockeys. The farm labourers would act as grooms adding a welcome few shillings to their farm wages. Young boys, playing truant from school, would offer to hold a horse whilst the rider went to one of the hostelries for refreshment. In the High Street trestle tables would be erected outside the shops and pubs piled high with refreshments to catch the people arriving by carriage, bicycle, or later by train and walking to the racecourse.
In between races the race-goers were entertained by many sideshows such as Punch & Judy, shooting galleries, and trials of strength, even boxing booths added colour to the scene as well as rows of drinking booths, refreshment tents, nut stalls and cake stalls - all designed to separate people from their money. However as well as the legitimate temptations to spend, and lose, money, the races also attracted pickpockets, 5-card tricksters and other conmen. A typical episode took place in 1895 when William Fox, of Liverpool, was charged with stealing a spade guinea, the property of Mr Edward Fitzjohn of the Boat Inn, Erbistock. He was arrested and searched without success. Acting Sergeant Farrell, of Wrexham, entered the room and out his hand into the prisoner’s mouth and produced the guinea!
For the first meeting in 1859 the chief constable had sent four extra men to help the three resident policemen, PC Edward Jones based in Bronington, PC Loughrin of Bangor and PC McLaren of Overton, to police the

course. The following year he sent eight men. Eight years later, in 1868, the contingent had increased to 14 men - 4 of whom were plain clothes. He was also now borrowing men from the Denbighshire Constabulary. The following year the number had jumped to 24 from Flintshire plus, in addition to the assistance from Denbighshire, he had also requested a detective from Shrewsbury and one from Chester Police Forces. When a charge was made to enter the ground in 1929 part of their duty was to patrol the riverbank for people arriving without paying on horseback across the fields, by boat, or by walking or riding across the ford of Royton.
Thinking it would be interesting to find out how many officers are needed to police the races today Jeanie Chantler, general manager of the racecourse, was contacted. Astonishingly only on big race days such as Ladies Day would they request a couple of police officers. Police might be in the road controlling traffic and generally keeping a watchful eye on proceedings but once they go onto the race ground there is a charge made - and they are expensive! The racecourse now employ their own security staff but in general, apart from the odd counterfeit note, they have a good clientele who are much more law abiding.

Handy hints to keep your busy throughout AprilThis is a frantic month for the gardener with lots of sowing, planting and propagating to do. Flower Garden - Soil preparation Continue forking over the soil between shrubs, teasing compost into the surface. Prepare areas where summer bedding will be planted out in late May. Summer bulbs - Many summer-flowering bulbs can be planted in March and April. In mild areas, dahlia tubers can be planted outside, covered with about 10cm (4in) of soil. In cold regions, delay planting until later in April. In the coming months, plant groups of gladioli at intervals to extend their flowering season. Grow lilies in pots so that they can be moved into the garden to fill any gaps. Spring bulbs - Mark any congested clumps that have flowered poorly with a label to remind you to lift and divide them later in the year. Give every clump of bulbs a thorough soaking with a liquid feed. Mulch - Spread a thick layer of compost or well-rotted manure as a mulch around established shrubs and along the base of hedges to help conserve moisture in the
soil and keep down annual weeds.
Months of wet weather will have caused moss to become a problem in many lawns. Thick moss quickly smothers out grass, so action is needed this spring to remove it, boost grass growth and improve surface drainage across the lawn. Chemical moss killers can be used to destroy existing moss, but this will still need to be raked out.
Far better to use a powered lawn rake to scarify the lawn, raking out moss and debris. These can be hired for a weekend if you don’t own one. Afterwards, fork over the whole area to improve surface drainage. Increase frequency of mowing as growth dictates. Later, in April or early May, apply fertiliser and check regularly for weeds, digging out any that you find.
Warming the soil - At this time of year, cold, wet soil can prove fatal to early sowings made outside. By covering prepared beds with cloches you will warm up the soil, protect it from hard frost and keep the rain off. Leave the cloches in place for a couple of weeks, then rake the soil surface before sowing seed or planting out young seedlings. Finally, put the cloches back over them to give your young plants a speedy start.

Watching a programme on T.V. recently reminded me of what a beautiful aircraft the De Havilland Comet was. It was first introduced to B.O.A.C. in 1952, the world’s first jet airliner, just beating the Americans who Britain had shared Sir Frank Whittle’s revolutionary engine design with. Under the skilful control of Chief Test Pilot and WW2 night fighter ace, Group Captain John Cunningham (nicknamed ‘Cats Eyes’ by the RAF during the war to hide the fact from the Germans that he had top secret radar equipment in his Beaufighter), the new DH 106 Comet prototype broke many records in1949, as its four De Havilland Ghost turbo jets produced 5000lbs. thrust each, giving the Comet a speed of 460 m.p.h.; a range of 1,500 miles and a ceiling of 40,000 ft.
Cunningham and the Comet sliced many of the route times of piston- engined aircraft by half, and his exploits filled the newsreels and newspapers of the times. Simply everyone wanted to fly in the Comet, but in 1953/4 tragedy struck, as three aircraft broke up in mid flight, killing all the passengers and crews.
The Comet fleet was grounded, and the resulting investigation into the crashes detected metal fatigue around the square windows in the fuselage. As a result, the airframe was strengthened, round windows were fitted and more powerful Rolls-Royce Avon engines (10,500 lbs. thrust each) raised the speed to 520m.p.h. and gave an increased range of 3,225 miles.
But alas in the mean time, the Americans had introduced their bigger, four jet Boeing 707 which carried more passengers than the Comet, making it more economical to operate. The Comet was developed into its much larger MK IV form over the successive years, and other variations such as the Nimrod, saw service with the RAF until 2011.
Group Captain Cunningham was awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy in 1978, and when I interviewed him at a similar award ceremony in later years, he told me how beautifully the Comet handled and how easy it was to fly. He also told me how much he admired Concorde and would have loved to have flown it. He was certainly one of our greatest pilots. Readers may be interested to know that a De Havilland Comet Mk.1 XB is on display at the RAF Museum,Cosford- just down the A41, and a wonderful day out!

FARM WATCHWe are shortly launching a Farm Watch Scheme for the Maelor South area which includes, Marchwiel, Cross Lanes, Overton, Penley, Bettisfield, Hanmer, Bangor on Dee, Bronington, Horseman’s Green etc. This is similar to Neighbourhood Watch, but covers farms and properties in the rural areas. It’s keeps farmers in touch with each other and with what is going on, crime wise, in their local areas. How Farm watch Works. – Most criminals will visit areas they wish to target and later return. By passing any information to the police of suspicious vehicles and persons, will then allow us to carry out checks so that we can solve crimes and direct our patrols. We will also pass any vital information and advice back into the farming communities, working together to prevent and deter criminals that are targeting the area. This scheme has initially been introduced by the North Wales Police as a trial and by working in partnership with local Community Councils, we have formed a working group that has been dedicated to achieving this scheme. We encourage all farmers that join the scheme, to have a sign situate on their farm entrance and pass their contact details to the local police. Once the police have received your details, a small information pack will be delivered to your door by the local officer. This time can be used for any questions or information you may have. As I am writing this article, the biggest news of the week was the ratings agency Moody’s decision to strip the UK of its AAA credit rating. Britain’s debt was marked down one notch to AA1. This is the first time since 1978 – when ratings began – that it has lost the AAA rating.Yet this was no bolt from the blue, as the UK has been on a ‘negative outlook’ for several months, and the agency’s concerns about the outlook for the UK economy have been well reported. Whilst this does represent a landmark decision, it should be put into perspective – there are 21 rungs on the ratings ladder and Britain has dropped only one.Whilst the downgrade saw the value of sterling (against other currencies) fall in early trading, to within a whisker of the symbolically important threshold of 1.5 against the US dollar, it has since steadied and recovered some losses. The year so far has seen sterling lose nearly 7% against the US dollar, whilst the euro has gained 7.5% against the pound.What does this mean for the UK economy and investors? A weak pound is good for the UK’s exporting companies, making their products cheaper for overseas customers, although those companies sourcing materials from abroad will suffer. However, it is also likely to push up the costs of
imports and so put upward pressure on inflation; unwelcome news for families and consumers who are already struggling with rising gas, electricity and petrol prices.
Andrew Sentance, former Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee member, cautioned that the cut to the UK’s credit rating would add to the existing downward pressures on sterling. “This of itself won’t increase inflation but it will add to pressure on the pound, which has already fallen a long way in the space of 6 weeks – which is not going to help inflation”.
Once again this is bad news for savers, with interest rates at rock bottom it means the real value of money is eroding even further. This is a theme we have mentioned in previous articles and I make no apology for bringing it up again. Wrexham Power Limited (WPL) are proposing to build a large gas fired power station on the edge of Wrexham Industrial Estate. They are a property developer from Birmingham with parent company registered in Bermuda. They are not a utility company.
The power station proposals suggest benefits which may not actually be delivered – see our objections. For more information on the proposals please go to Wrexham Power ‘s website www.wrexham-power.com. But don’t you believe all you read!!
The electricity will be generated and will need to be transported to the Legacy Substation by means of 400kv SUPERSIZE 50 METRE HIGH TOWER PYLONS (similar to those you see on the M56 towards Runcorn). These may ruin a massive swathe of rural countryside from Bowling Bank, Isycoed, Pickhill, Bangor on Dee, Marchwiel, Crosslanes, Sontley, Eyton to Rhosytllen.
REASONS TO OBJECT: Whilst the UK needs more power, there is no genuine need for a scheme of this size in Wrexham area (N Wales already produces more power than it uses – this power station will fill the deficit of power in the South of England at the expense of our environment)
There are better locations for such a development in the UK such as the many recently closed nuclear, coal and oil plants which have pylons, etc. in place already.
There is no proposal for a sub-station on the Wrexham Industrial Estate and therefore the claims that it will benefit the Estate by providing extra power appear flawed. Wrexham Power are claiming the possibility of sales of heat but have the wrong plant and no infrastructure, This is “Greenwash” to mislead us.
Claims of job opportunities are dubious– many of these jobs are highly specialised and are likely to be brought in from elsewhere.
The power station would be a huge ‘eye sore’ from rural locations including the Cheshire approaches to Wrexham.
Pollution could affect the industrial estate and local villages including Holt and Farndon.
This is not a sustainable or low carbon proposal when it could and should be. It will produce 2.5 million tonnes per year of carbon which will need to be stored underground or out to sea .
There are better options for the Industrial Estate that could genuinely achieve the benefits with no requirement to spoil our environment with the proposed pylons, e.g. a much smaller sustainable low carbon energy efficient plant.
‘FRACKING’ further down the line ?
A formal consultation is due to start soon and as the project is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, the planning consent required is a Development Consent Order. Wrexham Power Limited’s Development Consent Order application will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate, the government agency responsible for receiving such applications. It will examine the application publicly and make a recommendation the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change as to whether to approve the application. It is the Secretary of State who will ultimately grant consent.
All interested parties, including local residents and Wrexham County Borough Council, will have opportunities to submit their views during the consultation. However this consultation is short so we are starting our objections NOW, focusing mainly on the Power company at this stage.
