1. Care and maintenance of demo farms and enhancement of established Lakatan and Cardaba farms

Plant care operations in demo farms were carried out (regular fertilizer application, sanitation, e. g., stem and mat sanitation and regular leaf trimming and deleafing, population control, proper drainage, and insect pest and disease monitoring and their management). Sanitation, population control and nutrient management were introduced in established farms. Fertilizer program was implemented for the POT and Modified POT (Please see attachment A). Cardaba demo farm in Mabini, Compostela Province was damaged by drought last April 2010. Another Cardaba farm in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur was damaged by flood last January 2011. Project sites were replaced. About 180 Lakatan plants were blown down by strong wind in Mascariñas’ farm, Monkayo, ComVal Province last October 27, 2010.

2. Training/seminar of banana farmer cooperators and other banana growers, farmers’ meetings and Field Day

Conducted 4- day training in Monkayo, ComVal Province on Integrated Crop Management (ICM) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Lakatan and Cardaba Production last September 2-3 and September 16-17, 2010.

3. Preparation /distribution of IEC materials

A two -day training was conducted at the Farmers’ Pavilion of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Bago -Oshiro, Davao City last November 23-24, 2010. Conducted on- site training and in-house training in Davao del Sur. Prepared the following posters on banana and banana diseases:

1. Different parts of banana 2. Banana bract mosaic 3. Banana bunchy top 4. Banana freckles 5. Moko disease of banana 6. Nutrient deficiencies symptoms and toxicities

in banana 7. Fusarium wilt (Panama disease ) of banana 8. Black leaf streak (Sigatoka) disease of

banana Distributed two sets of IEC materials (leaflets) during the training in Davao del Sur (Banana corm weevil and Black cross).

technicians and municipal officials. Attended by 30 participants composed of farmer cooperators, agriculture extension technicians, barangay officials of the agriculture committee in Davao City and students. 10 participants were trained in the on-site training and 25 participants attended the in-house training in Davao del Sur. Production will be negotiated with SMARRDEC for funding support. 18 tarpaulin posters were printed and 14 were given to banana growers.

Highlights of Accomplishments (Region X1)

In Compostela Valley, demo farms identified from two municipalities were closely monitored. Regular gathering of data was also done. Soil sampling and liming were conducted in acidic areas to correct soil acidity. Early detection and eradication of disease especially bunchy top is strictly implemented to minimize disease spread. Areas for enhancement in lakatan and cardaba were already identified from two municipalities in Comval, namely: Municipality of Monkayo (3 farms for lakatan and 6 farms for Cardaba) and Municipality of Mabini (4 farms) and initial activities were already conducted such as stem and mat sanitation and weeding. The details of the farm sites are shown in Attachment A.

A four-day training on ICM and GAP was also conducted in Monkayo on September 2-3

and September 16-17, 2010 which was attended by over 50 participants composed of banana farmers, technicians and farmer-politicians. Experts on different aspects of banana production shared their knowledge to farmers. Actual disease identification and eradication and proper lay-outing were also done right after every lecture. This gathering of farmers and technicians led to the creation of banana growers association in Monkayo which aims to organize the farmers and enhance their production practices to improve banana production. The association at present is negotiating for buyers who will buy their produce at reasonable price.

In Davao City, three identified farm sites in Barangays Catalunan Grande and Lampianao, Davao City were regularly monitored. Diseases observed were recorded and were eradicated immediately particularly plants infected with bunchy top and cucumber mosaic. Cultural practices on the care and maintenance of the plants were also undertaken wherein interventions of the Lakatan POT and modifications of the POT were followed. Agronomic data such as plant height, girth and number of leaves were gathered. Five farmer cooperators in Barangays Ilam and Manambulan, Davao City were also identified for the enhancement aspect of the project. Technical assistance was provided to them particularly on the care and maintenance of their crop. Soil samples were also collected from their areas for analysis. Details of the farm sites are shown in attachment A.

A training was also conducted at the Farmers’ Pavilion, BPI-DNCRDC last November 23-24, 2010 which was attended by participants from the Local Government Units, Farmer cooperators, Barangay Officials and students. Resource persons were invited to lecture on various topics related to banana production.

Monitoring activities in the different project sites in Lower Mabuhay, Bansalan; Poblacion, Matanao; Kapatagan, Digos City, Dulangan and Goma, Digos City; and Darong, Sta. Cruz were regularly conducted. An on-field training (from planting to care and maintenance) was conducted for the cooperators. Care and maintenance practices were implemented such as weeding, fertilization, deleafing, and observation on disease occurrence. Sample plants were tagged for the data gathering on agronomic characteristics. Three farmers were identified for the enhancement program for Lakatan (1 from Buhangin, Malita and 2 from Kapatagan, Digos City) and 10 for the cardaba enhancement project (2 from Digos City, 4 from Buhangin, Malita and 4 from Matutungan, Sta. Cruz). Soil samples were taken from these areas. Details of the farm sites are shown in attachment A.

As a start of the enhancement project, an on-field training was conducted at Dulangan, Digos City involving the cooperator, the caretaker and some eight cardaba banana owners. The on-field training was conducted by the Project Staff. A techno forum was done at SPAMAST-CAS Campus on February 7, 2011 wherein a training on banana disease prevention and control as well as compost making was attended by 25 banana growers which included project cooperators and additional banana growers within the surrounding areas of the campus.

Results and Discussion

1. Agronomic Data

The Lakatan P.O.T in Rosales Farm with a mean of 103.71 cm and Mascarinas Farm

with a mean 160.03 cm farm obtained the highest height increments which were comparable to the Modified POT’s of the two farms with means of 97.o7 cm and 147.21 cm, respectively. However, Modified POT in Alcaraz Farm attained the highest mean of 105.29 cm which is comparable to Lakatan POT. Farmer’s practice in the three farms of Alcaraz, Rosales and Mascarinas obtained the lowest means of 88.71 cm, 86.85 cm and 140.52 cm, respectively .Farmer’s practice in Rosales and Mascarinas Farms were both comparable to Modified POT while Alcaraz’ Farmers Practice is comparable to Lakatan POT. There were no significant differences in the pseudostem girth increment among the practices except in Alcaraz farm. Farmer’s practice attained the highest mean of 20.21 cm which is comparable to Lakatan POT. Modified POT had the lowest mean of 16.21 cm.

Likewise, no significant differences were also observed in number of leaves among Modified POT, Lakatan POT and Farmer’s Practice. In days to shooting, Modified POT has the longest days with a mean of 280.13 days which is comparable to Lakatan POT with 274.38 days. Farmer’s had the shortest days to shooting with 267.70 days which is comparable to Lakatan P.OT. The above results showed that the growth increment of Lakatan POT’s are significantly higher except in Alcaraz farm compared to the farmers’ practices and were comparable to Modified P.O.T’s. However, there was no significant difference between modified and farmer’s practice. These results can be attributed to the amount of fertilizers applied with Lakatan POT with the highest followed by Modified POT and Farmer’s Practice with limited inputs applied. Alcaraz farm had a different trend in both growth increment and pseudostem girth increment. Although the farmer’s practice was still the lowest, the Modified POT obtained the highest growth increment which is comparable to Lakatan POT. Farmer’s practice had a comparable increment with Lakatan POT. One of the problems encountered in the Alcaraz farm planted with Lakatan POT which was not anticipated is poor drainage when heavy rains occur. It was observed that the area planted for Modified POT drains faster compared to Lakatan POT and this event might have affected the growth of Lakatan POT treated plants. Pseudostem girth was highest in farmer’s practice which is comparable with Lakatan POT followed by Modified POT. The planting distance adopted by Mr. Alcaraz in his farmer’s practice is 2 x 3 meters giving 1, 666 mats per hectare, compared to 1,1818 mats and 1,904 mats per hectare in Modified and Lakatan POT’s, respectively. It appeared that lakatan plants planted at lesser density per hectare produces bigger pseudostem girth. In Mascarinas farm, Modified POT has the longest days to shooting which is comparable to Lakatan POT. Although numerically different, there is no statistical difference in the shooting of Lakatan POT and Farmer’s practice. The early shooting of plants in farmer’s practice indicated the effect of nutrition on shooting considering that this practice is least applied with fertilizers among treatments. Table 1b. Table 1b shows the increment in height of Lakatan plants established in the two farm sites. In Ale’s farm, the increment in height which is 199.05cm of the farmer’s practice is higher as compared to the other technology practiced. This increase could be attributed to the distance of planting practiced by the farmer since closer distance of planting was done. The penetration of sunlight is quite limited due to the overlapping of leaves thus photosynthetic activity of the plant is affected. Furthermore, the farmer used overgrown plants and practiced foliar spraying at 15 days interval on the vegetative stage could have attributed to the faster increase in the growth of the plants. No significant difference on the increment in height at Alcala’s farm was observed.

Increment in pseudostem girth of Lakatan plants (Table 1b) showed a signicant difference in Ale’s farm as computed but gave no significant difference at Alcala’s farm.

At vegetative stage of growth, number of leaves was counted at nine months after

planting and it showed that there is a significant difference between the Lakatan POT and modified POT but is comparable to the farmer’s practice in Ale’s farm. Plants were observed to be infected with sigatoka leaf disease but the farmer was able to deleaf infected leaves earlier thus reducing the inoculum level of the disease resulting to a more leaf number. In Alcala’s farm, comparable result was observed between PCARRD technology and the modified technology and significantly different as compared to the farmer’s practice.

Number of leaves decreased in time which could be attributed to the senescence of the leaves as the plant grows older and other factors have also been observed like the occurrence of Sigatoka that was observed on all the plants.

In Patalinghug and Lusica’s farms significant differences were observed among the

Package of technology (Lakatan and Modified) versus the Farmer’s Practice. Height increment at Patalinghug’s farm was observed high under modified POT at 73.43 cm while Lakatan POT and Farmer’s practice not significant at 5% level HSD with mean height increments of 33 cm and 28.53 cm. At Lusica’s farm, each package of technology was significantly different at 5% level HSD.

2. Fruit Yield Data

Table 2 shows the fruit yield data with the corresponding parameters under the Lakatan

Package of Technology (POT), Modified P.O.T and Farmers Practice.

The result showed significant differences in the parameters among the production

practices except in the finger diameter. Lakatan P.O.T obtained the highest mean in all the fruit

data parameters except hand weight. Number of hands was highest in Lakatan POT with the

mean of 7.40 followed by Modified P.O.T and Farmers Practice with 7.00 and 6.53, respectively.

Lakatan P.O.T has the highest net bunch weight of 12.74 kg, which was comparable to Modified

P.O.T with 12.06 kg. Farmer’s practice had the lowest with 9.83 kg. Highest mean was obtained

with Lakatan P.O.T with a mean of 2.12 kg, followed by Modified P.O.T and Farmers Practice

which had comparable mean of 1.71 kg and 1.66 kg respectively. Lakatan P.O.T obtained the

highest gross bunch weight with a mean of 14.86 kg, which was comparable to Modified P.O.T

with a mean of 13.65 kg and the lowest mean was obtained from Farmer’s Practice with a mean

of 11.51 kg. Net bunch weight followed the same trend with that of gross bunch weight with

Lakatan P.O.T obtaining the highest mean of 12.74 kg which is comparable to Modified P.O.T

with a mean of 12.06 kg while significant difference was observed in Farmers practice with only

9.83 kg.

The higher means obtained in Lakatan P.O.T, with exception to finger diameter, can be

attributed to higher inputs applied on treated plants which followed the recommendation of 220-

20-260 NPK per hectare compared to 150-50-240 NPK per hectare of that of Modified P.OT.

The lowest means obtained in farmer’s practice mirror the limited inputs applied by the farmer

which revealed the superiority of both P.OT’s. However, it should be noted that despite the

higher inputs in Lakatan P.OT, its result was comparable to Modified P.O.T in some of the

parameters especially the hand weight, gross weight and net bunch weight. This result is

remarkable and it suggests that production inputs, specifically fertilizers, can be reduced without

affecting crop yield.

3. Incidence of Diseases

Table 3 shows that bunchy top had the highest incidence compared to other diseases

followed by banana bract mosaic. This can be explained by the cardaba farms surrounding the

demo farms. It should be noted that the municipality has the largest area devoted to cardaba

production in Comval Province and many of these farms were neglected during the previous

years due to the low price of this commodity. These neglected farms harbour virus diseases of

banana and its vectors spreading diseases to other farms. Other diseases also occurred but

these are rare except in Mascarinas farm where nine cases of Fusarium wilt-suspected plants

were recorded despite disinfection of the corms before planting

A total of 17 plants were infected with bunchy top from Ale’s farm and seven plants from Alcala’s farm in Davao City. Infected plants were immediately eradicated using the PCARRD’s recommendation. A total of six plants infected with cucumber mosaic virus were observed at Alcala’s farm which were immediately eradicated. Sigatoka was also observed on all plants. Leaf pruning was done to reduce inoculum of the disease. One plant was observed to be infected with bract mosaic and was eradicated. Symptoms of these diseases are shown below.

Trainings/Seminars Conducted

4.1 Conduct of Training on Integrated Crop Management (ICM) and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) in Monkayo

Four-day training was conducted at the Monkayo, Municipal Hall on September 2-3 and September 16-17, 2010 which was attended by 50 participants composed of farmer cooperators, cooperative officials, agriculture extension technicians and municipal officials including the vice mayor of Monkayo who has a lakatan farm. The training had emphasis on community wide eradication of banana bunchy top in which the expert Dr. Avelino Raymundo explained to the farmers the importance of cooperation in effective management of this dreader disease. He also shared his expertise on sigatoka disease and its management. Details of the training are shown in Attachment B.

Evaluation sheets were given to the trainees for their comments and suggestions to

serve as basis on how to improve the succeeding trainings as what most of the farmers are expecting in months to come. Results of the post-training evaluation are shown in Attachment C. Lecture materials were given after the training (Attachment F & G).

4.2 Training on Integrated Crop Management (ICM) and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) in Davao City

A two-day training was conducted at the Farmers’ Pavilion of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Bago Oshiro, Davao City on November 23-24, 2010 which was attended by 30 participants composed of farmer cooperators, agriculture extension technicians, barangay officials of the agriculture committee in Davao City and students. The said training had equipped themselves on the management of banana particularly Lakatan and Cardaba production. Different concerns had been raised during the conduct of the training. Details of the training are shown in Attachment B.

Evaluation sheets translated into Visayan dialect were given to the participants for their reactions and comments. Different reactions were observed from the venue to the resource persons as well as to the food that were served. Most of the participants looked forward to have another training regarding banana production with emphasis on pests and diseases. Results of the post-training evaluation are shown in Attachment C.

4.3 One-day training on Pest Management in Banana and Composting (Davao del Sur) The training was done during the school’s Foundation Day, 07 February 2011. The lecture was done as part of the technology forum strategy. Cooperators of the project as well as neighboring banana growers who were possible banana technology adopters were likewise invited. The lecture focused on the disease prevention and control for banana and on how to do composting using Trichoderma fungus.

Two sets of IEC materials (Banana weevil and black cross) developed by SPAMAST RDE Unit in collaboration with the High Value Crop Coordinator - Provincial Agriculture Office of Davao Sur were developed. The said IEC materials were translated into the Visayan Dialect. Translation of the IEC materials was assisted by the Project Staff, Ms. Graciela Caballlero.

Problems Met/ Suggested Solutions Mascariñas and Rosales farms’ soil analysis revealed the acidity of the soil with pH value ranging from 4.5 to 5.8. Lime was applied to correct the acidity and succeeding soil analysis will be done to monitor the soil pH. Strong wind last October 27, 2010. also toppled about 180 Lakatan plants in Mascariñas’ farm, Monkayo, ComVal Province last October 27, 2010. Additional bamboo props and guying were done for stronger support to the plants.

Heavy rains for the past months delayed the schedule of activities especially in cardaba project sites and flash flood totally ravaged one Cardaba demo farm in Davao del Sur. The area was replaced.. Lately, another demo farm in Davao del Sur was destroyed by stray animals. This incident was already reported to the barangay. Thievery is a serious problem in Mascariñas farm resulting to the missing bunches including some of those tagged for data gathering.
