Science Education Heading Out of This World(PARKSVILLE, B.C., Canada – October 15, 2018) Twenty-three teachers from across the school district arecollaborating to provide grade five to twelve students with science education that will be out of this world. TheAmerican-based Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) has invited School District 69 Qualicum(SD69), to develop science experiments from which they will select one to travel to the International SpaceStation (ISS). Starting in September, participating students will learn about forces, motion and gravity in their scienceclasses, then break into teams to design experiments and write research proposals for the microgravityenvironment of space. A Proposal Review Committee, made up of local engineers, scientists, SD69administration and teachers will vet the proposals and submit three student-designed experiments to theSSEP National Step 2 Review Board. Of the submissions, one experiment will be chosen and then conductedby astronauts on the ISS during a spring/summer 2019 spaceflight. “This will be an incredible real-world experience,” shared Rollie Koop, Superintendent, SD 69. “Students willexperience what it’s like to be a scientist. They’ll learn the scientific process and how to design experiments. This opportunity aligns with our strategic priority of integrating technology effectively to broaden and deepenlearning for all students and the school district’s focus on science, technology, engineering and math. It’s notevery day we get this kind of opportunity, and we are incredibly grateful to the Vancouver Foundation andMagellan Aerospace for providing over $18,000.00 in funding.” “An educational experience like this inspires curiosity and can shape careers,” said Carl Savage, ScienceTeacher and SSEP Community Program Director, SD69. “Participating in an International Space Stationexperiment demonstrates to students how their learning applies to the real world. Gravity effects everythingand our experiment, which goes into space, could potentially have an impact on technology, medicine, spacedesign, and other areas of applied science.” Two SD69-designed space patches will accompany the microgravity experiment to the International SpaceStation. Typically emblems representing the mission are worn on the flight suits of astronauts and a differentpatch is created for each mission. A kindergarten to grade twelve-design competition will determine whichartwork heads into space along with the experiment. ABOUT THE STUDENT SPACEFLIGHT EXPERIMENTS PROGRAM The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) is an initiative of the National Center for Earth andSpace Science Education (NCESSE), located in the United States, and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute forSpace Education, which works internationally. It is enabled through a strategic partnership with DreamUp,PBC and NanoRacks, LLC, which are working with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)under a Space Act Agreement as part of the utilization of the International Space Station as a NationalLaboratory. ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES (E-CIGARETTES)

What are e-cigarettes? E-cigarettes are popular “high tech” devices on sale at many convenience stores and stand-alone e-cigarette retailers. They are sometimes marketed as a safe alternative to smoking and the advertising is aimed at hooking youth. E-cigarettes can look like pipes, pens, USB memory sticks or regular cigarettes, and are made up of a battery, cartridge and a heating element. E-cigarette liquid often has nicotine even though it is not legal to sell nicotine-containing fluid in Canada. The fluid comes in many attractive flavours, such as chocolate mint, strawberry, grape and watermelon. This is another method of attracting youth to try the product. E-cigarettes send off a vapour, and the mist is inhaled into your lungs, much like a traditional cigarette. Are they safe? People who use them (or “vape”) are very excited about this product, yet there is a lot that we do not know about them, and they are not proven to be safe. For example, e-cigarettes: Can send out unknown and possibly harmful substances, some of which may cause

cancer, are poisonous and have caused fires. May have nicotine and be addictive. Are not proven to help people quit smoking and may lead you to actually take it up! Are not approved by Health Canada to help you quit. Are another way that Big Tobacco wants to hook you and make money.

Island Health Tobacco Prevention does not support using electronic cigarettes: By young people. As a way to quit smoking. In any place where regular cigarettes are not allowed to be smoked.
