BladeRunners School District 69/Parksville Career Centre

“A partnership of opportunity for local Oceanside Youth”

The partnership between School District 69 and the Parksville Career Centre has created a unique opportunity for local youth through the BladeRunners program. The BladeRunners program which is facilitated by the Parksville Career Centre staff, provides local youth with employment training and certifications, reflective of local employment needs. Over the past year, as a direct result of this partnership, 11 local youth referred through PASS/Woodwinds Alternate School have enhanced their resumes by attaining key “in demand” certifications and essential “job training skills”. The Spring 2016 BladeRunners cohort had the highest number of PASS/Woodwinds Alternate School referred participants, as 7 students (approximately 75% of all participants) participated in this program. The key connection to local youth through PASS/Woodwinds Alternate School has played a vital role in this partnership, as this community connection provides a foundational link to the BladeRunners program.

The BladeRunners program opens the doors to employment in the Oceanside region, while also providing local youth with high school credits. The youth referred by PASS/Woodwinds earn “work experience” credits towards their graduation and maintain a strong connection to the School District. This collaborative partnership provides a “dual win” for local youth, by building a foundation of potential local employment and graduation requirements.

The seeds of this partnership have been sowed through the BladeRunners program in 2015/16, whereas the anticipated growth of this program will continue to flourish and benefit local youth.

Explore the Trades – Summer 2016

In July, students from School District 69 will be trading their flip flops for work boots in a unique summer experience! The “Explore the Trades Program”, which is made up of 14 participants from PASS/Woodwinds, KSS, and BSS, will once again provide an excellent opportunity for students who are considering a valuable and exciting Trades career. The success of last year’s program and the feedback from students and parents has solidified the need for this program.

Students start with a Resume Building seminar facilitated by staff from the Parksville Career Centre, and will participate in workshops about Networking, Labour Market Information and Personalities Dimensions. In addition, students will gain essential training and certification within Occupational First Aid Level One Certification, Construction Safety Training System (CSTS-certification), and the opportunity to attend a WorkSafe presentation for young workers entering the workforce.

A trip to Vancouver Island University will enable students to shadow their chosen trade program, and a guided tour of the campus will showcase available services and amenities. An additional field trip to visit large industrial sites in the Alberni Valley, will give students the opportunity to view various trades “at work”. Finally, students will have the unique experience to participate in two weeks of work experience with local employers, directly in their chosen trade of interest.

This well-rounded summer program gives students a fantastic opportunity to learn more about exciting career options, while also providing practical and exciting hands-on experience – ideally linking our students to our District’s HeadStart program, and a fulfilling career!

“EWC was the best experience of my life! I met new friends who I am still in contact with!” Carter Hancock/ BSS Student

Being granted the opportunity to go to Encounters was one of the best experiences of my life. I had never been much of a political kind of person, but after attending the Democracy and Youth themed week a passion for politics has blossomed. It was very eye opening to hear from Peter Schiefke and be able to see a custom made letter addressed to solely the participants of our week. We have greatly enjoyed the companionship of 101 participants ranging from every territory as well as every province and to this day, 58 days since my time there, we still talk regularly. It is great to have people to whom you can talk about politics. When I left, I had a minimal amount of knowledge about politics and now my computer notifies me about political updates. My time there was truly life changing and I would highly suggest to anyone who has the opportunity: Do not hesitate!
