The challenge

Having a finance organisation located in multiple locations presents logistical challenges in the delivering of training programmes. However, the business decided to use its Telepresence suite technology to create a 'virtual classroom' environment and deliver a modular and tailored accounting training programme, in conjunction with the ICAEW to:

• improve and develop the level of IFRS technical skills and knowledge of accounting policies across the global finance community;

• create an informal and interactive virtual environment, enabling the participants to interact with colleagues in other countries; and

• learn through the use of tailored case studies and practical examples covering a wide range of subjects such as revenue recognition, contract accounting, leasing, foreign exchange and tangible/intangible assets.

The solution

Our brief was to create a relevant programme that solved all three challenges. We created a robust syllabus, suitable for interactive, virtual and face-to-face learning via the Telepresence technology. The strength of the partnership meant we could keep the learning focused and adaptable to a diverse global audience.

The programme delivered a number of value added benefits such as:

• improved staff morale;

• more regular communication between the global finance teams; and

• delegates felt more valued.

This programme was a great success, and we had really positive feedback from the participants. The use of our Telepresence suites allowed us to connect finance colleagues in multiple sites around the world – many of them meeting and interacting 'virtually' for the first time. Collaborating with ICAEW as our training and delivery partner worked very well – we were able to jointly create content which was carefully tailored to the needs of the audience and delivered in a fun and engaging way.

The challenge

LV is one of the UKs largest insurance companies with over 5,700 employees.

Following the creation of a shared service centre and a business partnering team to 'add value’ it needed help to develop both teams in terms of:

• ‘best practice’ approach to business partnering suitable for LV;

• a more commercial mind-set/skill-set; and

• the ability to influence and collaborate more effectively with customers and other stakeholders.

The solution

Critical to success was engaging the whole finance function in the change. To set standards for the new team our delivery was focused on team behaviours, group dynamics and sharing best practice across businesses.

The core programme focused on:

• defining what great business partnering looks like in a finance context and key skills required;

• what it means to ‘be commercial’ and how to develop and communicate commercial opinions; and

• how to translate information into insight.

The session on learning how to question, challenge the business and listen better was really valuable. It also highlighted our need to map out our stakeholders and carefully consider our approach for different teams. It was really useful and tailored to our needs.

Towers WatsonThe ‘financial acumen’ challenge

The challenge Towers Watson was in search of a vendor/partner that could bring its newest consultants up to speed on business finance. Although the more senior consultants dealt with it regularly, they needed a reminder of the basics, along with a more comprehensive session on the areas of finance that most touch their day-to-day work.

The solution

With the specialised nature of the business and role of the consultants, it was vital to engage key stakeholders and design a bespoke course that demystified the language of finance for non-finance consultants to grasp and apply to their role. We also invested time inexploring and creating related and relevant case studies that would drive confident client discussions.

We chose to partner with ICAEW as they seemed willing to invest time up front to better understand our business and training needs, therefore ensuring sessions were tailored for our audience. Reviews on both sessions were overwhelmingly positive and specifically highlighted the course's interactive and flexible nature as keys to its success.

Client case study – Leadership and Management

Crowe Clark WhitehillThe ‘business growth' leadership and management challenge

The challenge

UK-based professional services business, Crowe Clark Whitehill recognised that in order to achieve significant growth aspirations it was critical to embed cross-functional working in all regions. Critical to this was investment in the manager population to boost morale and engagement levels, while developing the skills to drive performance and enable growth across the business.

The solution

Our approach was a modular programme where we challenged managers to solve real business problems and learn new skills in cross-functional working groups. The facilitators focused on pushing delegates out oftheir comfort zone, enabling them to better understand their own behaviours and encouraging them to see the bigger picture. This was further developed through one-to-one coaching.

The personal nature of the design and delivery ensured that each individual felt noticed and valued, had the chance to connect with the business strategy and work on their personal development needs.

The team at the ICAEW were excellent from the start. They took time to understand our strategic plan and growth aspirations and built a programme around this. The programme is a significant investment for our firm and we are starting to see the fruits of that already. One of the key factors in the programme’s success is that each participant is given one-to-one coaching, enabling them to focus on their own development. We would not hesitate to recommend the ICAEW team to others looking to develop tailored programmes for professionals.

Client case study – Talent Development

The challenge

Jon Scott, Regional FD, Hilton Hotels was looking to take the next step up in his career. ICAEW’s aspiring CFO programme isn't like attending a series of lectures. Jon enrolled to:

• build an external business network;

• develop new leadership skills; and

• access the career advice of an external CFO mentor who had ‘been there and done it’.

The solution

Jon joined our aspiring CFO programme Financial Talent Executive Network (F-TEN®), one of the few interactive and practical programmes on the market. It is a business leadership, mentoring and peer-to-peer network programme designed for ambitious senior finance professionals.

I quickly realised that you have to get involved – acting, networking, sharing experiences. It is actually easier to adopt some of the techniques you learn on the programme than it isusing them with your peers on the workshop days! The opportunity to be mentored by a current business leader has been a real highlight. For me, the whole experience has been all about courage. I now know 'if it's meant to be it's up to me!' Since completing the programme, I have been promoted and am pleased to be sponsoring one of my team to take part in F-TEN®.

Client case study – Professional Services

Anderson Anderson & Brown LLPProfessional services

The challenge

The senior management team and HR department at Anderson Anderson and Brown made the decision to work with ICAEW to customise the existing Developing Leaders in Practice (DLiP™) programme to develop new and aspiring partners for a group of selected senior managers. It was important to the firm that we maximised the investment in our key players and by holding it in-house with smaller numbers, the participants got more attention from the facilitators. It also allowed us to tailor the content to make sure it was in line with the firm’s objectives and also met the needs of the managers.

The solution

The key benefit was that each participant came away feeling confident they knew how to lead the business, which was one of our main objectives and made theprogramme a huge success. We worked on four key areas with delegates:

• Self-awareness – understanding their own behaviour and their impact on others;

• Goal setting – taking time out of the office to focus on their future and personal goals;

• Influencing skills – understanding how to influence more effectively both internally and externally;

• Support network – the opportunity to give feedback in a confidential environment.

Following on from the success of the in-house DLiP™ programme, Anderson Anderson and Brown has now entrusted ICAEW with all its management training.

It’s not just another ‘fluffy’ training course. It is very much a tough and challenging programme about how to take the business forward in the long run.

What our other clients say

The business will benefit from having a team of motivated, like minded individuals, all of whom are able to drive change within the business and manage and motivate their teams.

Andrew Witts, Group Financial Controller, Novae

As a result of the business partnering training I will be reengaging with the business to recalibrate needs and expectations. This was a really useful session for the team – much appreciated. Thank you!

Claire Price, CFO, Dentsu Aegis

ICAEW recently hosted a two-day 'Transition from Practice to Industry' course for the Barclays Finance ACA cohort. The programme was specially designed to help colleagues explore how to deal with tough situations when operating in a business environment and explore the psychology of transition and ways to develop resilience and confidence to succeed in a career at Barclays. The programme was extremely well received by colleagues, providing them with time to reflect on actions made in the past, while building strong decision-making skills for the future.

Victoria Balmer, Global Finance COO Team, Barclays

Personally, and as a firm, we are very grateful for the support of the trainer and team at ICAEW in our bespoke manager development programme. The feedback process, which we have implemented since, has really made positive changes to how we work with our clients – and each other. The way the trainer delivered it, the way she challenged us, and the way she supported us was fantastic. We were involved all the way through. I was a bit doubtful beforehand when it came to soft skills, but I have been converted into the positives it can bring.
