This year the eighth grade Gifted and Talented went

to Lincoln Center to become one with the arts and

learn to appreciate it. We took a coach bus with two

other towns that joined us in New York. On the way

we many landmarks and beautiful places such as the

Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. We saw

world famous Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Coach.

When we arrived in at Lincoln Center, we were very

excited. There were three buildings that were

shaped like long rectangles and were in a square

formation. In the middle was a big water fountain

and colorful modern art sculptures. We had time to

take pictures by a little pond, and a cafe that the roof

We want to thank the Keyport Board of Education for sending us on these amazing trips!

The 4th grade G&T students recently had the pleasure of going on a 2-day

trip to the Middletown Arts Center (M.A.C.) and Storming Robots in

Branchburg, NJ to learn about Engineering & Building. During the first day

at the M.A.C., students worked in small groups with other school districts to

complete three different building challenges; creating a table from newspa-

per to support the weight of a dictionary, a zip line challenge with golf balls,

and building with Legos. In all the activities, the students had to work

through the engineering design process to complete the task. During day

Two at Storming Robots, the students were tasked with building and pro-

gramming a Lego Mindstormer Robot. The boys and girls programmed their

robots using computer software to upload their programming directly into

their robots brain.

March 25th, 2014, the 8th grade KCS G&T class, as well as the

other G&T classes in Monmouth county, visited McCloone's Sup-

per Club in Asbury Park for a poetry slam competition. Upon arriv-

ing, Josh Ballard introduced himself as a professional slam poet

and recited some of his own work before the students began to

perform. There were 4 categories: free-verse, group poems, repeti-

tion, and cover. Students were selected to be judges, and the win-

ners of the category won a $10 iTunes card. All students who par-

ticipated also won a small prize. Almost everyone from our G&T

class performed and did a fantastic job presenting. We all got up

on the stage, reciting our poems with emphasis and hand ges-

tures; one of our students had even won the repetition category!

Unfortunately, the judging got cut short and the rest of the stu-

dents who hadn't performed yet weren't judged. They had never

had so many participants in the previous years. Towards the end of

the trip, the students moved around and sat with other students

attending the same high school. Overall, everyone had a great

time.

3rd grade G&T Learns ALL About Service Animals

On Thursday, May 22, the 3rd grade G&T Class visited Chariot Riders in Farmingdale, NJ. The children had

a full day of learning about equine care– grooming, diet, nutrition, and first aid. Then each child got the op-

portunity to mount a therapy horse and lead the horse around the practice ring for a few laps. For many

children, it was their first time on a horse, and it was quite exciting! The children learned about the mission

of Chariot Riders to provide therapy for physically disabled students. It was a memorable and FUN day!

The learning didn't end there! On Thursday, May

29th , the 3rd grade G&T students traveled to

Monmouth Park Racetrack where they experi-

enced a behind-the-scenes tour of the Racetrack.

The students took a tram throughout the extensive

stable area, watching the horses get their morning

runs, after-training baths, loading horses into the

starting gates and MUCH MORE! Did you know

during racing season there are more than 1500

horses at Monmouth Park?

The children also got to watch a presentation from

the K-9 Unit of Marlboro Township Police and

meet their service dog, Sheeba. The boys and girls

also met many different dogs from the Monmouth

County SPCA. This fun and hands-on presentation

allowed the children to meet all the different ser-

vice dogs that travel to local hospitals and nursing

homes for therapy. The boys and girls learned that

animals have many more uses than just pets.
