Compelling Value Proposition

According to the Economist, in 2013 the global cement market was worth $250 billion annually. Since then, it has grown year-on-year – and is forecast to keep on growing.

EMC's Compelling Value Proposition offers outstanding value to end-users and society-at-large.

Indeed, rarely does an opportunity present itself that comprises award-winning, patented, proven & transformative technology that powers outstanding margins at a fraction of the running costs of legacy technologies.

Simply put, it's about superior performing products that are competitively priced!

The Opportunity is Real...

Even if dwarfed by China, let's consider the United States, which is the world’s third largest cement producer. Aging U.S. plants are being closed without replacement owing to environmental concerns and costs, as stringent regulations (particulate and mercury levels) take hold:

Comparing 2013 to 2014, total U.S. inbound and domestic Portland cement shipments grew from 79.1 to 85.6 million metric tons (MMT) annually.

That's an 8.2% increase year-on-year, which is forecast to reach a jaw dropping ~192 MMT annually by 2035, according to the U.S. Portland Cement Association.

Yet, U.S. clinker production (cement's main component) has remained flat around 70 MMT, implying well-over a 100 MMT annual shortfall, that must be met by CemPozz® (or imports).

Hundreds of miles of highway have been paved. Heavy duty bridge structures and port facilities — as well as a wide range of industrial, commercial and residential projects — have all been built using CemPozz® (sample photo above).

All the equipment needed to run the EMC Activation process is "standard" that can be mass- produced. Further, the process is very simple. Operatives are trained easily. With capital costs about 1/10 of legacy technologies, investors are assured of superior risk-adjusted returns...

Award-Winning Technology...

At the 45th World Exhibition of Invention, Research and Innovation, held in Bruxelles, EMC Technology was awarded the Gold Medal "with mention" by the EUREKA Organisation, recognising EMC Technology's outstanding and unique contribution to World-Class innovation.

(EUREKA is a pan-European R&D funding and coordination inter-governmental initiative, coordinating the efforts of governments, research institutes and commercial companies concerning innovation. As of June 2010, EUREKA has 40 full members. All 27 E.U. Member States are members).

Latest Academic Recognition…

Now approaching 25 years since discovery, EMC's rich heritage of independent recognition continues with the 2015 Japan Concrete Institute's publication of "How to Make Concrete More Sustainable" in the Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology.

Written by SINTEF, this paper recognises the clear and significant sustainability benefits offered by EMC Technology (SINTEF is Scandinavia's largest independent research organisation)...

Stunning Product Performance — Up to 80% Replacement of Portland Cement!*

CemPozz® — Tough Enough for Houston Bayport & IH–10...

CemPozz® has been used in Texas since the fall of 2004. Its performance has been proven in a broad range of applications. The bridge overpass at SH-249 and the paving of IH-10 – the main highway linking Miami with Los Angeles – are but two examples.

Thoroughly tested on an industrial scale and complying with applicable standards and specifications, CemPozz® is a product of broad application. Mitigation of the serious deleterious effects of alkali-silica reactivity, sulfate attacks and chloride penetration delivers particularly important contributions to concrete durability. This was particularly important for the Houston Bayport extension, where CemPozz® was used extensively.

This is what Cempozz® is about: The super–replacement of Portland Cement, for both

general and specialist concretes having superior strengths & durabilities!

The durability improvement is uncontroversial. The increased use of pozzolans means there are more chemical pathways on hand to form C-S-H or other hard compounds instead of Portlandite. Second, the reactions occur later, so the newly-formed C-S-H subdivides to block the initial capillary-pores formed during the curing process. Third, porous "aggregate transition zones" become filled with C-S- H, reducing their influence. These features yield reduced permeability, leachability and DEF (delayed ettringite formation) that contribute, with other features, to the much-improved durability.

CemPozz® has proven itself time and again in the most demanding environments.

Maybe this isn't so surprising given EMC Technology's Scandinavian heritage.

For example, an early project was the casting in 1998 of a road bridge with Swedish civil engineering giant Skanska, in Karungi – in the far north of Sweden. A few miles south of the Arctic Circle, Karungi's climate is very severe in terms of the extreme cold, where the ambient temperature can fall below – 35°C (–33°F), and also the extreme temperature variations — where the annual range can be more than 60°C (140°F).

Built for the Swedish Road Administration (SRA), the Karungi road bridge was constructed using a concrete comprising 50% EMC Cement made with activated quartz sand.

After 8 years' constant usage, the Karungi bridge was thoroughly examined by the SRA.

The examination revealed that all bridge-structures remain in very good condition. PHOTO: IH-10 at Houston, Texas. Here, the annual temperature ranges also can be as extreme as that experienced in lower Arctic Circle climates, just like in Karungi in the far north of Sweden. Certified by Texas DOT, hundreds of miles of highway

have been built using concretes made from CemPozz®. This includes vast swathes of IH-10 — the main highway linking Miami with Los Angeles...

Superior Strength & Durability. Competitive Prices. Reduced Carbon Footprint.

CemPozz®— Ton-for-Ton, Saving Over 90% CO2 Emissions...

Let's look at some stark realities, based on facts.

Portland Cement ("PC") ranks as the most common man-made product.*

In 2014, worldwide Portland Cement production stood at 4.3 billion tonnes (~4.75 bil. tons), of which ~3.7 billion tonnes (~4.1 bil. tons) was due to clinker production.*

From 2015, the historical upward-trend is set to continue year-after-year.*

The direct CO2 emissions from Portland Cement production come from two highly energy-intensive processes (i) calcination, which occurs at ~850°C (1560°F)~ and (ii) sintering, which occurs at ~1450°C (2642°F). The direct emissions depend upon the technology used, with the ratio varying from 0.8 to 1.4 units of CO2 produced for every unit of Portland Cement. The average figure tends to be a ratio of ~1:1. So, for every ton of Portland Cement produced, about 1 ton of CO2 is released — and that's just the direct CO2 emissions.

Then there's the energy requirements. The typical figure is approximately 1000 KWh per ton of Portland Cement produced. Then, depending on the energy-source used for electricity generation, that's even more CO2 emissions (note: usually when the Portland Cement industry states its CO2 emissions, only direct emissions are counted).

All in all, using commonly-accepted "average" figures, 2014's Portland Cement production consumed upwards of ~4.1 trillion kWh energy worldwide, also releasing ~4.1 billion tons CO2.

So how does Cempozz® compare?

CemPozz® — Ton-for-Ton, Up To 97% Energy Savings...

CemPozz® presents dramatic savings both in terms of CO2 and energy-savings. The figures vary slightly depending on whether the source material used is fly ash or volcanic ash. That's because to manufacture CemPozz® from volcanic ash, the resulting compound has to be dried. This drying process consumes about 150,000 btu per ton of CemPozz® produced.

So, what does this mean?

For CemPozz® made from fly ash, as compared to ~1000 KWh per ton of Portland Cement, the energy requirement is usually ~25 KWh. There are no direct CO2 emissions.

For CemPozz® made from volcanic ash, the energy requirement (including drying) is no more than ~80KWh, with direct emissions of only 8 kgs CO2 per ton.

So how does this figure in terms of worldwide cement production?

For CemPozz® made from fly ash, up to 80% of the Portland Cement in concrete can be replaced with CemPozz®.

For CemPozz® made from volcanic ash, replacement is upwards of 60%. So, using the typical replacement figures for CemPozz® and using the 2014 Portland Cement worldwide clinker production figures of 3.7 billion tonnes (~4.1 billion tons):

That's a worldwide savings-potential of up to 3 billion tonnes CO2 annually (~3.3 billion tons).

And with that, also a yearly energy-saving of over 3 trillion kWh. PHOTO: Volcanic ash (natural pozzolan) deposits situated in Southern California that have been tested by independent consultants CMT, according to the relevant normative standards. EMC Technology was then applied. At 50% Portland Cement replacement, the resulting concretes exceeded the normative requirements. For example, at 28 days, the compressive strength was recorded at 4180 psi. The 56-day strength exceeded the requirements for 4500 psi concrete, even taking into account a safety margin as recommended by the American Concrete Institute. At 60% replacement, both 28-day and 56-day strengths also exceeded the relevant normative requirements.

EMC Activation: The Power Behind CemPozz®

EMC Technology is not 'test-tube' science. It's the real deal...

First discovered in 1992, the EMC Activation Process is now a patented technology for the very high replacement of Portland Cement in concrete, to also improve its performance.

To scale to full-industrial capacities requires a fraction of the capital costs.

As the previous section demonstrated, the energy costs are a fraction compared to Portland cement.

So what is the process about?

EMC Activation...

Invented in Sweden, EMC Activation is a process that modifies the surfaces of the various particles. This is achieved by imparting energy into the particles in a special patented way...

By this process, latent hydraulic materials such as fly ash, natural pozzolans (including silica sands) and blast-furnace slags are mechano-chemically activated in milling systems especially designed to ensure a pre-determined distribution of particle sizes.

In other words, EMC Activation generates high-energy particle impacts that render sub-micro cracks and various dislocations in multiple crystal structures. This leads to a condition called "amorphization". This yields a higher reactivity, owing to increased surface areas, with no significant increase in overall powder fineness.

Self-Healing: Another Natural CemPozz® Feature

Many countries are experiencing unprecedented amounts of civil infrastructure deterioration — indeed, so much so that the annual outlay for repair and rehabilitation has outstripped the cost of new infrastructure construction. Mainly, this is associated with concrete cracking at different stages of the hardening process.

The development of self-healing ("biomimetic") technologies is key towards developing so-called "smart" sustainable infrastructure systems that comprise such self-repair features.

But most are experimental and of limited use, with zero long-term results. And most are expensive anyhow, pushing-up the price of concrete by at least three times...

The current "perceived wisdom" assumes complete self-healing when such self-healed concrete cracks are limited to somewhere below 30μm (i.e., rather than "absolute").

So how does CemPozz® compare?

Strategic Context in a Nutshell...

The annual economic impact associated with the maintaining, repairing, or replacing such deteriorating structures is estimated at $18-21 billion in the U.S. alone.

As of 2012, the American Society of Civil Engineers estimated that $2.2 trillion is needed over the next five years for repair and retrofit~ a cost of $2 trillion has been estimated for Asia's infrastructure. To make matters worse, repairs of concrete structures are often short-lived.

In the U.S., it is estimated that half of all field repairs fail and require re-repairs. About three-quarters of the failures are attributed to the lack of durability, with the remaining attributed to structural failures. This inadequate performance is often ascribed to inappropriate material selection, poor application method, or a combination of both.

The concerns related to civil infrastructure deterioration are not limited to the economic cost of repair and rehabilitation, but extend to social and environmental costs. While there is little documentation and quantification of the social and environmental costs, it is generally agreed that repeated repairs of infrastructure over their service life is unsustainable.

Stunning U.S. Field Reports...

The most efficient approach utilizes the intrinsic natural tendencies of continued hydration, pozzolanic and carbonation processes when cracks are exposed to water and carbon dioxide (in air). The current "perceived wisdom" is that this approach can only work if the cracks are (i) tight~ and (ii) 100μm or less. Further, a recently-documented approach demonstrated "crack widths self-controlled to below 50μm".

EMC concretes containing up to 70% of pozzolans (i.e., using CemPozz®) demonstrate the ability to deliver long-term pozzolanic reactions, leading to the formation of additional amounts of C-H-S gel. This fill-ins the voids and cracks of widths up to 200μm. This is up to twice the crack-width recorded in published scientific literature elsewhere.

In the field-usage of CemPozz® such self-healing effects were observed by Texas DOT (TXDOT) engineers, mapping shrinkage cracks in highways made of concretes comprising 50% OPC replacement using CemPozz® (of total cementitious content 270 to 350 kg/m³).

According to TXDOT, over 50% of the overall drying shrinkage cracks disappeared some 2-3 months after concrete casting...

Fully Lab-Verified in Sweden...

The same tendency for self-healing of EMC concretes containing 60% CemPozz® (total cementitious content 350 kg/m³) was recorded in tests—using strict laboratory protocols—conducted at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, commencing in September 2012:

Other solutions assume self-healing can occur only if the cracks are less than 100μm, whereas testing has shown CemPozz® self-heals cracks of »twice« that width.

Other solutions assume healing has occured once cracks are limited to below 30μm, whereas tests show that CemPozz® yields »complete« self-healing. Without any intervention whatsoever...
