You are led by Gods Spirit - Romans 8:1-14

    I. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ JesusRomans 7: 24-25: 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me fromthis life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in JesusChrist our Lord.

In Romans 7:7-25, Paul reveals the truth of the impossibility of living a righteous life bydepending on your flesh-your own ability. He gives us a picture of what a persons life is like

whose mind is focused on the flesh (their own ability)-they are condemned in their mind

In Romans 8, Paul reveals the answer to the condemned mind: a mind focused on the Spirit:relying upon Jesus and His gift of righteousness

Rom 8:1 THEREFORE, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty ofwrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live [and] walk not after the dictatesof the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit. AMP

In Christ means: G1722 en:A primary preposition denoting (fixed)position(in place, time or state), thatis, a relation ofrest: a fixed place of rest

Those whose minds are fixed on Jesus and are resting in what Jesus did for them will live free fromcondemnation

    Flesh: mans ability: self-reliance, self-improvement, self-righteousness

Spirit: Gods ability in man; the gift of righteousness in Jesus

In many translations of the Bible the phrase, who live and walk not after the dictates of theflesh, but after the Spirit, is not in verse 1. However, many translators included it here to clarify

what the Apostle Paul is teaching. He is contrasting very clearly the difference between the life ofa person who has their mind on the flesh (Romans 7:14-25) and the life of a person who hastheir mind on the Spirit (Romans 8:1-3)

In the KJV it says, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The Strongs defines the word walk as G4043peripateoper-ee-pat-eh'-o

From G4012 and G3961; to treadall around, that is, walk at large (especially as proof of ability); tofollow (as acompanion): - be occupied with

According to this definition, this Scripture means that there is no condemnation in the heart ofthose who are not occupied with the flesh, but are occupied with the Spirit. Their thoughts arenot on their ability or their works, but on Gods ability in them and Jesus finished work on thecross. They listen to and agree with the Fathers good opinion of them: that there is nocondemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus!

immorality, impurity, indecency, 20 Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit (factions, sects

with peculiar opinions, heresies), 21 Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. Iwarn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shallnot inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the workwhich His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience(an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, 23Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Againstsuch things there is no law [that can bring a charge]. 24 And those who belong toChrist Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature)

with its passions and appetites and desires. 25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let usalso walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go

forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.] AMP

Verses 19-21 describes what the flesh (mans ability) has the power to produce in our lives: death (negativeemotions & actions)

Verses 22-25 describes what the Spirit in us has the power to produce in our lives: life and peace (positiveemotions & actions)

How do we walk in the Spirit?

Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but theythat are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. KJVRom 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholydesires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, butthose who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spiritset their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit.Rom 8:6 Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy

Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both hereand hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both nowand forever]. AMP

The word mind in verse 5 comes from the Greek word: G5426 phroneo

From G5424; to exercise the mind, that is, entertain or have an opinion; think

The mind of the flesh thinks on its own opinion of a situation and depends on its ownability which produces death (Galatians 5:19-21)

The mind of the Spirit listens to and thinks upon Gods opinion of a situation and depends on His Spirit withinhim which produces life and peace (Galatians 5:22-25)

Rom 8:4-7 in the Message Bible says, And now what the law code asked for but wecouldn't deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts,

simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us. 5 Those who think they can do it ontheir own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never getaround to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God's action in them find thatGod's Spirit is in them--living and breathing God! 6 Obsession with self in thesematters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. 7 Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God.

III. You are not in the flesh, you are in Christ and led by Gods SpiritRom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to thelaw of God, neither indeed can be.Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of Goddwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. KJV

To fully understand this passage of Scripture, we must understand that there is adifference between walking after the flesh and being in the flesh

walking after the flesh: a mind occupied with its own ability and worksbeing in the flesh: a person who is not in Christ. If you placed your faith in Jesus you are forever in the

Spirit, regardless of where your mind may be.

In these three verses, the Apostle Paul explains that those who are in the flesh cannot pleaseGod, but quickly reminds you that you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spiritbecause GodsSpirit lives in you through Jesus! If we find ourselves thinking on the flesh and our hearts

become filled with negative emotions (death), all we need to do is remember who we are. We areGods children and we are led by His Spirit! Turn your thoughts back to Jesus and let Him liveHis life through you!

Rom 8:10 But if Christ lives in you, [then although] your [natural] body is dead byreason of sin and guilt, the spirit is alive because of [the] righteousness [that Heimputes to you].Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in

you, [then] He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to lifeyour mortalbodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you.Rom 8:12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the flesh [we are notobligated to our carnal nature], to live [a life ruled by the standards set up by the

dictates] of the flesh.Rom 8:13 For if you live according to [the dictates of] the flesh, you will surely die.But if through the power of the [Holy] Spirit you are [habitually] putting to death(making extinct, deadening) the [evil] deeds prompted by the body, you shall[really and genuinely] live forever.Rom 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. AMP

Awake to Righteousness! You are no longer in the flesh. You are living in the Spirit! You are dead to sin, butalive in Christ! Condemnation no longer controls your life! Youve been made a righteous son or daughter ofGod, and you are led by His Spirit!

Romans 8: 11-14 in the Message Bible says, It stands to reason, doesn't it, that if

the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life,he'll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), youare delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be asalive as Christ's! 12 So don't you see that we don't owe this old do-it-yourself lifeone red cent. 13 There's nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do isgive it a decent burial and get on with your new life. 14 God's Spirit beckons. Thereare things to do and places to go!
