Self-focused Vs Jesus focused I. Abraham is our Example of being made righteous not by our works, but through faith (relying

upon Jesus). Jesus perfect Righteousness is a pure gift of Grace

Rom 4:1 Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did He discover about being maderight with God?

Rom 4:2 If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, He would have had something to boast about. But that wasnot God's way.

Rom 4:3 For the Scriptures tell us, "Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith."Rom 4:4 When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned.Rom 4:5 But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives

sinners. NLT

Rom 4:3 What we read in Scripture is, "Abraham entered into what God was doing for him, and that was the turningpoint. He trusted God to set him right instead of trying to be right on his own."

Rom 4:4 If you're a hard worker and do a good job, you deserve your pay; we don't call your wages a gift.Rom 4:5 But if you see that the job is too big for you, that it's something only God can do, and you trust him to do it--you

could never do it for yourself no matter how hard and long you worked--well, that trusting-him-to-do-it is what gets you set right with God, by God. Sheer gift. The Message

When people work a job they deserve their pay, their pay is not a gift Righteousness is given without any work or effort on your part, it is a pure gift that you did not earn by your

performance, but simply received by relying on Jesus The turning point in our lives is when we enter into what Jesus did for us instead of focusing on what we do for

Him. Abraham quit trying and started trusting- and so can we! We cant fix ourselves, but when we trust God to do it, we experience the benefits of the righteousness Jesus

provided for us

Rom 4:6 David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are declared righteous without workingfor it:

Rom 4:7 "Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight.Rom 4:8 Yes, what joy for those whose sin is no longer counted against them by the Lord; whose record the LORD has

cleared of sin." NLT1 & 2Rom 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. KJV

The words will not in this verse are what is called a double negative. Taken from the Strongs concordance itmeans: G3756 and G3361 ; a double negative strengthening the denial; not at all : - any more, by (no) means,never, not at all! (Hebrews 10:17-18)

This is the strongest language possible stating that those who receive forgiveness will not ever have their sins heldagainst them. He didn't just say "did not" or "does not" but "will not," implying that even future-tense sins have been dealt with through the sacrificial offering of Jesus, once for all (Heb 10:10 and 14). Reliance upon Jesus for righteousness frees you from all guilt and shame because there is no longer any record of any wrong youve ever done. You dont have to pay anymore! WOOHOO!

Depression is the result of focusing on your failures -thinking you have to pay for your sins or the sins of

someone else. Pure Joy is the fruit of focusing on Jesus -believing the truth that you are forgiven-freed from the penalty of your sins (failures), and being conscious of the truth that you are qualified for every blessing because of the gift of righteousness that youve been given in Jesus!

When you quit focusing on what youve done wrong and start focusing on what Jesus did to make you right, youllexperience true joy and freedom from shame and condemnation

Isaiah 61:10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the LORD my God! For He has dressed me with the clothing of salvationand draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels. NLT

II. The promise of righteousness is guaranteed to all who rely upon JesusRom 4:9 Now, is this blessing only for the Jews, or is it also for uncircumcised Gentiles? Well, we have been saying that

Abraham was counted as righteous by God because of his faith.Rom 4:10 But how did this happen? Was he counted as righteous only after he was circumcised, or was it before he was

circumcised? Clearly, God accepted Abraham before he was circumcised!Rom 4:11 Circumcision was a sign that Abraham already had faith and that God had already accepted him and declared

him to be righteous even before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have faith buthave not been circumcised. They are counted as righteous because of their faith (reliance upon Jesus).

Rom 4:12-13 And Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised, but only if they have the samekind of faith Abraham had before he was circumcised. 13 Clearly, God's promise to give the whole earth to Abrahamand his descendants was based not on his obedience to God's law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith (reliance upon Jesus).

Rom 4:14-15 If God's promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless.15 For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is tohave no law to break!) NLT

Rom 4:14-15 If those who get what God gives them only get it by doing everything they are told to do andfilling out all the right forms properly signed, that eliminates personal trust completely and turns thepromise into an ironclad contract! That's not a holy promise; that's a business deal. 15 A contract drawn up

by a hard-nosed lawyer and with plenty of fine print only makes sure that you will never be able to collect.But if there is no contract in the first place, simply a promise--and God's promise at that--you can't break it.The Message If you could become righteous and qualified by obeying the law then faith in Jesus would not be necessary; and

the promise to make your righteous through faith in Jesus would be pointless. There are Christians who have put their faith in Christ for their eternal salvation, but then they fall back into the

deception that God is going to bless them and use them based on their performance. This is what happened to theGalatians. Paul told them that Christ had become of no benefit to them if they were trusting in what they did inorder to be made righteous before God (Ga 5:4). Likewise today, many Christians do not experience the full benefits of their salvation because they are making faith void by trusting in their own goodness.

Self focus- I am qualified by my good works. Jesus focus- I am qualified because of Jesus!

Rom 4:16 Therefore, [ inheriting ] the promise is the outcome of faith and depends [ entirely ] on faith, in order that itmight be given as an act of grace (unmerited favor), to make it stable and valid and guaranteed to all hisdescendants--not only to the devotees and adherents of the Law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham,

who is [ thus ] the father of us all . AMP Trying to be righteous through your obedience puts you under the curse (Galatians 3:9-11) The promise and benefits of righteousness is guaranteed to those who rely upon Jesus . Its the only prom ise you

need for it qualifies you for every blessing of God!-a free gift

Righteousness (46): Innocent; free from guilt or blame; justified: It is the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law. In addition to the pardon of sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied. The law is not relaxed or set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and so the

person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom. 5:1-10). It proceeds on the crediting to the believer by God himself of the perfect righteousness, of Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:3-9). So what are the rewards of perfect obedience to the law? What are the advantages of beingdeclared righteous in Jesus?

1. Complete Acceptance and Approval in Gods sight 2Co 5:21 For our sake He made Christ [ virtually ] to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in andthrough Him we might become the righteousness of God [ what we ought to be, approved and

acceptable and in right relationship with Him, by His goodness ]. AMP2. Blessed in every area of your life: Read Deuteronomy 28:1-13

The word blessed means: anointed and empowered to prosper 3. Prosperity : Proverbs 13:21: Prosperity is the reward of the righteous. NIV 4. Health & Renewed Youth: Read Isaiah 53:4-12

Psa 103:5 He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle's! NLT 5. Favor & Guidance

Psalm 5:12: For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield. NIV Proverbs 16:3 Roll your works upon the Lord [ commit and trust them wholly to Him;

He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and ] so shall your plans beestablished and succeed. AMP

6. Financial abundancePsalm 37:17,19: The LORD sustains the righteous. 19They will not be ashamed in the time of evil, and in thedays of famine they will have abundance. NASB 2 Corinthians 9:8-11: 8God is able to make all grace abound to you, sothat in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

9As it is written: He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever. 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will bemade rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion. NIV

7. Deliverance & Victory in every situation Psalm 34:15,17,19 : 15The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; 17The

righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. 19A righteous man mayhave many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all.

Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. NLT

8. A Joyful and Peaceful heart & home Proverbs 3:33: The Lord declares blessed (joyful and favored with blessings) the home of therighteous. AMP Isa 32:17-18 And the effect of righteousness will be peace [ internal and external ], andthe result of righteousness will be quietness and confident trust forever. 18 My peopleshall dwell in a peaceable habitation, in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.

9. Children who live in the truth and have great peace Proverbs 11:21 : [The] seed of the righteous shall be delivered. KJV (Also see, Isaiah 59:21)Psalm 103:17 :His righteousness is to your children's children Isa 54:13 I will teach all your children, and they will enjoy great peace.Psalm 112:2-3 Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed. 3 Prosperity and welfare are in his house, and hisrighteousness endures forever.Pro 31:28 Her children rise up and call her blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied)

10. False accusation against you will not prosper Isa 54:17 But no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall show to be in the wrong. This [ peace, righteousness, security, triumph over opposition ] is the

heritage of the servants of the Lord [ those in whom the ideal Servant of the Lord is reproduced ]; this is therighteousness or the vindication which they obtain from Me [ this is that which I impart to them as their justification ], says the Lord.

11. Powerful and Effective PrayersProverbs 10:24 : The desire of the righteous shall be granted. KJV James 5:16 : The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. NIV (I John 5:14,15)

12. Protection: Psalm 91Proverbs 12:21 : No [actual] evil, misfortune, or calamity shall come upon the righteous. AMP

III. Youre identity is not defined by your circumstances or your weaknesses.- Youre identity isdefined by what your Father says about you in Christ.

The promise and benefits of righteousness are guaranteed to those who share the faith of Abraham. Thefollowing verses give us a clear picture of what it looks like to live by faith (relying upon Jesus forsalvation)

Rom 4:17 As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations. [ He was appointed our father ] in the sight of Godin Whom he believed, Who gives life to the dead and speaks of the nonexistent things as if they [ already ]existed.

Rom 4:18 [ For Abraham, human reason for ] hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So [ numberless ] shall your descendants be. [ Gen. 15:5. ]

Rom 4:19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered the [ utter ] impotence of his own body, which was as good asdead because he was about a hundred years old, or [ when he considered ] the barrenness of Sarah's [ deadened ] womb.[Gen. 17:17; 18:11. ]

Rom 4:20 No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God,

Rom 4:21 Fully satisfied and assured that God was able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He had promised.NLT

Rom 4:19 Abraham didn't focus on his own impotence and say, "It's hopeless. This hundred-year-old body could never father a child." Nor did he survey Sarah's decades of infertility and give up.

Rom 4:20 He didn't tiptoe around God's promise asking cautiously skeptical questions. He plunged into thepromise and came up strong, ready for God,

Rom 4:21 sure that God would make good on what he had said. The Message

God said to Abraham, I have made you the Father of many nations -the father of those who will rely uponJesus for their righteousness. He speaks of nonexistent things as if they already exist.

Abrahams negative c ircumstances did not define him-neither did his weaknesses nor the weaknesses of his wife.He agreed with what His Father, God said about him no matter what his eyes could see. He grew strong andempowered by faith as he gave glory to God- as he agreed wit h his Fathers good opinion of Him.

Glory means Gods view and opinion. II Corinthians 1:20 says we give glory to God when we say Amen to every promise we have in Jesus, and agree with His good opinion of us. Faith is relying upon Jesus and agreeing withGods view of you in Christ, no matter what you see.

This revelation that my weaknesses nor my husbands weaknesses could keep Gods favor and blessing from mehas totally transformed my life. When I realized that neither I nor my husband could earn our righteousness, andour mistakes did not disqualify us, I entered into an eternal rest, knowing I was blessed because of Jesus!

I remember when the Father revealed to me that He had made me righteous in Jesus and the fruit of my life andmy circumstances screamed it was not so, but as I began to look to Jesus for my righteousness and glorify God by agreeing with His view of me in Christ, just like Abraham, I was empowered by faith to believe what I could notsee. I am not defined by my present circumstances, but by what the Father declares about me.

God sees us as righteous and He brings the manifestation of the fruit of righteousness in our lives as we continuedto rely upon Jesus every day.

Self-focus produces doubt; Jesus focus produces faith We can simply believe what our Father says about us in Christ despite our circumstances or past mistakes. Our

circumstances are subject to change, but His good opinion of us does not!

Rom 4:22 That is why his faith was credited to him as righteousness (right standing with God).Rom 4:23 But [ the words ], It was credited to him, were written not for his sake alone,Rom 4:24 But [ they were written ] for our sakes too. [ Righteousness, standing acceptable to God ] will be granted and

credited to us also who believe in (trust in, adhere to, and rely on) God, Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,Rom 4:25 Who was betrayed and put to death because of our misdeeds and was raised to secure our justification (our

acquittal), [ making our account balance and absolving us from all guilt before God ]. Jesus was betrayed and put to death to free us from the penalty of our sins-completely freeing us from all guilt

before God. He rose again to secure our righteousness forever- we can fearlessly and confidently agree with what our Father

says about us and experience His salvation in every area of our lives!

This same story is revealed through the whole Bible. God declared weak human men and women righteous because of their faith in Jesus

Abraham: old and his wife barren; The Father saw a Righteous father of many nationsGideon: His clan was the weakest; The Father saw a mighty man of valorSaul: He was a murderer; The Father saw him as the great Apostle PaulDavid: He was a murderer/adulterer; The Father saw a great kingMoses: He was a murderer/stutter; The Father saw a great leaderEsther: She was a poor Jewish girl; The Father saw a queenPeter: He denied Jesus; The Father saw him as a man of faith

These are all examples of the Fathers great love for us all! He looks at each of us through the eyes of love

and declares things we cannot see. When we begin to truly rely upon Jesus and agree with our Father that we our righteous in Him, just like Abraham, we will experience His glory (His good opinion of us) in ourlives. He died to set us free from the guilt and shame of our failures. He rose again to secure ourrighteousness! We are qualified forever in Jesus! All that is left for us to do is thankfully acknowledge thisgift He has lovingly given to us all in Jesus!

Awake to Righteousness: I am not defined by my present circumstances or by my pastmistakes. I am defined by what my Father says about me in Christ. I agree with Him nomatter what I see. Jesus died to free me from the shame and condemnation of my mistakesand He rose again to make me righteous fo`rever in Him! My true identity is found in Jesus!
