Cannabis bust: The farm at Earlsheaton

Respect your elders, pleaseBy Mohamed Ansar

BEAUMONT Court residential home in Mount Pleasant, Batley, has been a victim for several years of anti-social behaviour by local youths. Now it’s escalated to the point of damage being caused to the building.

Jeanette West, the warden at the home told Awaaz:“The residents feel intimidated, its like they have no respect for the elders”, she added, ”On Monday afternoon we had a major power cut here and obviously because of the youths at the back, and the doors release after a while because there’s no power to them, we had to go tie them with strings because we were scared”.

The trouble begins around about 4:30pm most days with Asian teenage boys 15 years and above hanging out at the

chosen as it is a blind spot. Some six or seven gather and smoke cigarettes as well as

cannabis, leaving behind a trail of rubbish including cans, chewing gum and cigarette ends. What’s more the youths

doors.

It isn’t a case that this spot is on the public road either, there are several meters between the gate of the Home and the gathering area. The youths have further engraved their name on the wooden door and the cladding above the door way, as well as damaging the door panel with a pointed object.

Jeanette’s husband on occasions has been out and asked the boys to leave, but received verbal abuse in an intimidating fashion, being told that they were not responsible for the damage. However the youths don’t seem to under-stand that it’s a place they have

Residents feel intimidated when going to the bins, in cases not bothering out of fear.

Local residents we spoke to are just as angered. One resident told us:“Why don’t they do it on their own door step? Why do they come around here?” Believing the youths are not from the surroun-ding streets but from the local area.

Another told us:“I don’t know them but by the demographic of the area you would expect them to be Muslims. Not only are they giving the youth a bad name but they are giving us Muslims a bad name too!”

In a predominantly Muslim community, anger about the anti-social behaviour is high, one resident told us:“It’s been happening here for

years” referring to the park across the road “we can’t even let our children use the park”. It has long since been believed that the park is a hot spot for drug dealing and has been reported to the Police.

Several residents mentioned, during the last Ramadhaan youths would come here whilst everyone was at prayers in the Mosque, presumably telling their parents they were goingfor prayers too, and then caused damage to a number of vehicle. Jeanette told us further

cameras at the home had been taken and soon would be implemented, but as to whether this would end the nightmare she wasn’t sure.

Police have increased the patrols in the area and are aware of whom some of the youths are, even to the point of visiting the boy’s home and speaking with their parents.

LOCAL members of ethnic minority groups from across Kirklees directed their anger at the council for not consult-ing with them in the lead up to this year’s budget.

At a meeting at Al Hikmah centre in Batley organised by Just West Yorkshire – a civil liberties and racial justice group, angry residents demanded to be directly addressed by the council leader and chief executive.

It was said that council leader Mehboob Khan had been asked to attend but declined the invitation and that Kirklees’ chief executive Adrian Lythgo had also been invited but arranged to send

although this claim has been refuted by Kirklees.

Saied Laher, of the South Asian Consortium Kirklees said: “We need to meet Adrian Lythgo and the councillors. As a community that’s what we need to be asking for and it’s not an option, they have to come.”

The council set its budget on 22 February and Kirklees faces a reduction of 27% in spend

ing, over the next four years. 70% of council funding comes in the form of grants from central government. But with

programme being imple-mented by the Conservative led coalition, Kirklees faces cuts to its budget.

savings of £64 million per year. But the council tax will be frozen this year and Kirklees is also looking to extend that to next year, thanks to a government grant that compensates the council.

Senior Finance Manager, Eamonn Croston and Community Action Planning Manager, Warren Ellis, were going through their presentation outlining the budget, angry

representatives cut them short, as they demanded to know the implications of the cuts to the BME [Black and Minority Ethnic] community.

Eamonn Croston said: “For starters the level and scale of reductions hasn’t been considered lightly in terms of understanding the overall impact on the residents of Kirklees.

“Obviously there are concerns that they [the cuts] are impacting disproportionately on the BME community, but the council is proactively trying to minimise the impact across front line services.”

At the end of the meeting, Ibrar Hussain a community co-ordinator, said: “why weren’t we consulted with,

clearly they’ve done some work [engaging with the community] but not enough.

“What we wanted was facts,

BME communities. That we haven’t got today, we’re walking away with nothing. I’m disappointed.”

Certain representatives at the meeting felt that North Kirklees was being marginal-ised and would be further squeezed.

expected to report back to Kirklees, but many at the

COUNCILLORS agreed to make cuts of around £16m over the next 12 months, at the Kirklees budget meet-ing.

Protestors from the trade union Unison and Kirklees Save Our Services gathered

hall, before the meeting in a last-ditch attempt to stop Kirklees council from cutting around £16m from its budget.

At the meeting council leader Mehboob Khan said: “There are cuts and pain in this budget. There are cuts

services.”

There was some good news however as the council

agreed to freeze council tax for another year and at the 11th hour monthly kerbside glass collections were saved from the chop. The council agreed to spend £100,000 on the service next year.

Funding to libraries is being cut by £622,000 and £425,000 is being taken from the children’s centres budget. A huge £1.2m will be cut from the care budget and other services such as landscape maintenance in

Batley town centres and brass band concerts set to

year providing savings of £333,000.

But the council did save seven public toilets from the axe for now. They will spend £50,000 keeping them in operation for six months. Maintaining and sign-posting of public rights of way was also saved from proposed cuts last night.

The amendments allowed the minority Labour admin-istration to reach an agree-ment with the Lib Dems and

Conservatives.

Conservative leader, Cllr Robert Light said: “I welcome this compromise. With these amendments, my group is happy to allow the budget to be passed.”

600 council jobs will go in the coming year thanks to the cuts. Cllr Khan said: “We

term decisions to achieve a better long term future.” 2,000 council jobs are expected to go by 2014.

Cuts begin to bite

Tories want two way KirkleesBy Ismail Mulla

THE Tories have put forward radical proposals to split Kirklees council in two.

At a joint press conference with the Calderdale Conservatives, the Kirklees Conservative group announced the proposals to split Kirklees in to two separate councils.

A Dewsbury and Spen Valley council in the north consisting of ten wards, taking in Dews-bury, Batley, Birstall, Heck-mondwike, Cleckheaton and

Colne and Holme Valleys, Denby Dale and Kirkburton.

Calderdale will continue to operate as a metropolitan council but service would be shared between it and the two Kirklees councils. Though Calderdale would lose 15 coun-cillors under the proposals as the Tories say they would like to see equal sized electoral wards.Kirklees Conservative Leader Cllr Robert Light said: “These

proposals have been under development for some time and we know that they are well founded and deliverable. We have an opportunity to rid the area of the blight that is Kirklees and deliver better services with greater accountability.“The Kirklees Conservative

Group is united across the borough in the belief that this is the best way forward for our areas and communities, and we believe that these plans should appeal to political parties across the board as well as to residents across the two boroughs.”

Not surprisingly the plans were welcomed by Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell, who said: “Kirklees has become too big, cumbersome and distant. The proposals to split the council will mean that in the future, local views will be heard.

“Labour and Lib Dem council-lors have to realise that there is huge support amongst people who would not usually vote Conservative for the council to be split.”

But Calderdale Labour leader, Cllr Tim Swift wasn’t as welcom-ing, he said: “These Conserva-tive proposals read like a desperate attempt to dream up something new without any thought to the long-term consequences. If we were to adopt them, we could wave goodbye to any chance of shap-ing our own future.

“Of course we should work together with Kirklees where it makes sense. But our interests are not identical.”

The Tories think that once implemented the new systems could provide savings of up to £2.5m per year, and they believe that the split could take place by 2014 if approved.

10 YEARS WITHOUT CHARGEShaker Aamer the last Briton in Guantanamo

Depression : An illness, not a curse

Remember depression

May be normal in the circumstances that you are in. Can come and go and people often overcome it without help Self-help strategies and support can help you over come depression. Things can improve even if you have more severe depression.

of depression does NOT mean that you are going mad or losing control.

By Rukiya Dadhiwala

ONE in four British adults will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year, with mixed anxiety and depression being the most common mental health problem in Britain. An aston-ishing 9% of people meet criteria for anxiety and depression; and anything between 8-12% of the popu-lation experience some form of depression in any year (The ONS, ‘Psychiatry Morbidity Report’, 2001.) It is

also believed, that with the economic downturn more people will suffer from depression and therefore it is important to understand the symptoms and how to seek help.

So what is depression? Depression can cause a wide variety of symptoms and therefore affects people in different ways. Symptoms range from lasting feelings of sadness and hopelessness to losing interest in things you usually enjoyed. People suffering from depression

may also feel very anxious or very tearful.

Depression can also have physical symptoms such as constantly feeling tired, not sleeping enough or sleeping too much and losing your appetite. The severity of symptoms can vary. In mild forms of depression you may persistently feel very down but it doesn’t affect your day-to-day life greatly, however, in its most severe form depression can make you feel suicidal.

If you think you are suffering from depression there is help available.

If the depression is mild you may be able to overcome it with your own helpful coping methods and

support from thos around you. There is plenty self-helpmaterial available in the form of books and pamphlets (see primarycare-selfhelp.co.uk).

However, if your depression becomes severe and self-help doesn’t improve things you may need other forms of help and support such as anti-depressants, psychological therapy and help from other mental health professionals.

If you are feeling very down, depressed, hopeless and can’t see things improving then it’s okay to seek help. To seek additional help you first need to go see your GP who will discuss all your options with you and decides what form of help and support is best for you.

BRADFORD Jeweller, Mukthtar Ahmed, has

costs by Bradford Magistrates, after pleading -

ing Act 1973.

The owner of Mangla Jewellers on Horton Grange Road, Bradford was inspected on four occasions when unhallmarked items of imported gold jewellery were found on sale. The jeweller was repeatedly advised that all items made of precious metal must be hallmarked before they are displayed for sale,

was sold an unhallmarked gold ring.

An audit undertaken in March 2011 by West Yorkshire Trading Standards found that only around 1 of every 10 precious metal jewellery items on sale in the shop were hallmarked. Ten unhallmarked items were seized as a sample for further analysis and as evidence for prosecution.

On 14th February 2012 Mr Ahmed appeared at Bradford Magistrates Court to face eleven charges under the Hallmarking Act 1973 where he was told by bench chairman Patricia Tillotson: “you were aware that this jewellery should have been hallmarked as you had been warned on four other occasions”.

GROWING PRESSURE: Campaigners call for Aamer’s release

By Mohamed Ansar

AN Islamic charity worker being detained in Guantanamo Bay for 10 years without charge pleads with his captors: "Please torture me in the old way ... Here they destroy people mentally and physically without leaving marks". Shaker Aamer, the last British citizen detained in Guan-tanamo Bay, in February 2012 passed 10 years at the notori-ous prison.

The 45 year old father of four was sold by Afghan villagers for a sum of $5000 to the security forces in 2001. After being tortured at the infamous Bagram prison in Afghanistan,

according to Mr Aamer, he was transferred to Guantanamo Bay on 13 February 2002.

In a letter to his wife, released through The Independent, he says "Please torture me in the old way ... Here they destroy people mentally and physically

without leaving marks".

In another extract from 9 August 2008, he says: "My sweetheart, yes I lost a lot of weight, yes I have a lot of sickness, yes I got short sight, yes my bones are aching, yes I got white hair, yes I got old, but ... my heart is still young, my mind still strong, stronger than ever."

Aamer’s father-in-law Saeed Siddique, speaking on behalf of the family, recently explained to Amnesty International the impact his ten years at Guantánamo has had on them:

"It is a great injustice for the family. The family has been torn apart for ten years. Shaker has been detained without being charged for ten years. What kind of justice is this?”

The Bush administration in June 2007 cleared Mr Aamer for release when they acknowl-edged it had no evidence against him, but is still detained more than four years later. Some believe his continued detention is due to his protest on human rights at the camp, serving several months in isolation recently for speaking

out. Foreign Secretary William Hague raised talks with Hillary Clinton last December regard-ing the continued imprison-ment of Mr Aamer, but with US elections on the horizon it looks unlikely a release is likely to be swift, according to sources.

Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said:

“It’s an absolute disgrace that Shaker Aamer is still behind bars at Guantánamo - without a trial, without access to his

family, almost without hope.

“Britain needs to put its foot down with the Americans. We know that the Foreign Secretary William Hague has already called for Shaker’s release. He

timetable for this to happen - within days or weeks, not months or years.”

Aamer has always stressed that he was in Afghanistan as part of an Islamic charity, claiming he was there building a school. Ten years later there is still no evidence against him as he

continues to miss out on seeing his children grow up the young-est of whom, born in 2002, he has never seen.

The Independent further revealed the UK Government

Aamer in court, including preventing his lawyers viewing evidence that may prove his innocence and end more than a decade in US custody.

In ten years, only one of the 779 detainees held at the base has been transferred to the USA for prosecution in an ordinary federal court. Others have faced unfair trials by military commis-sion. The administration is currently intending to seek the death penalty against six of the detainees at such trials.

Amnesty is calling for an end to -

tanamo with an online petition to Barack Obama (www.amnesty.org.uk/guantanamo). Presently there are still 171 inmates still at the camp, 167 held without a trial.

“By reporting attacks, we can create a database that will help to tackle anti-Muslim crime throughout the UK and we may then map the areas in which anti- Muslim attacks are most frequent. We want to reduce faith-based crime and our service can provide Muslims with a place where they may speak freely and openly.” explained Faith Matters founder and director, Fiyaz Mughal.

He also added, “We also work with partners that can provide support services to victims of anti-Muslim attacks if required. This is a further

added value service that the MAMA project provides.”

Faith Matters has made the programme widely accessible where victims or witnesses of attacks can contact MAMA by telephone, text message, email, Facebook and Twitter. The victim is asked to select from six possible categories of attack including: extreme violence, assault, damage and desecration of property,

threats, abusive behav-iour and anti- Muslim literature. The victim also needs to provide details of the incident and also the location of the attack to be successfully mapped.

According to a speech made by Baroness Warsi at the Holy See there is a rising militant secularism that is threatening faith identity and that faith should have a seat at the table in public life.

Volunteers help pilgrims get jabbed upBy Ismail Mulla

THE Council of British Hajjis (CBH) held a vacci-nation clinic for locals going on the Islamic pilgrimage of Umrah at the Al-Hikmah centre on Track Road in Batley. For £25 pilgrims could get a meningococcal vaccina-tion which is a mandatory visa requirement.

The clinic was run with the help of a large army of volunteers. The CEO and founder of CBH, Rashid Mogradia said: “I would say there are about 20 [volunteers] today at this clinic. This is the beauty of the service that we provide it’s all volunteer based, it’s all community based.

“Doctors give up their time; nurses give up their time because it’s a dedica-tion to a cause for the almighty Allah at the end of the day.

That’s why we’ve been

cost neutral.”One of those volunteer-ing was Mohammed Bala a Dentist from Dewsbury. He said: “I just want to thank CBH for providing this great service for the community. The local doctors and GPs obviously they have to charge a fee, but they’re charging anywhere between £35 and £75 in

some places. I think to have that service for £25 is fantastic.”

Local resident Shamima Ravat came with her whole family to be vacci-nated at the clinic, she said she chose the clinic because “It’s more convenient.”

She went onto add, “My brother has organised the whole trip for the family so he’s brought us here rather than a GP and I think it’s supposed to be cheaper as well.”

Mogradia said “It’s a testa-ment to the hard work that went in last year for when we did around sixclinics in Yorkshire and

people have in this cost mutual service, local GPs are charging quite a bit. We provide it for next to nothing, people come in

their hundred’s and theyget jabbed up.”

Further clinics will be held at the Al-Hikmah centre on 20 June, 22 August and 14 September, for more information and to book a vaccination visit www.cbhuk.org

THE establishment of Rugby League in Pakistan and South Asia has moved a step closer

former England RL international and British Asian Rugby Associa-tion (BARA) founder Ikram Butt. The latest round of talks took place in January at the Pakistan High Commission in London with the major focus being on how to show continuing support for the Prince of Wales’ Pakistan Recovery Fund aimed at assisting with rebuilding the large parts of the country devas-

well as launching the new

Pakistan playing jersey.

Ikram explained: “We met at the Pakistan High Commission in London and talked about our support of the charity and the development of Pakistan Rugby League. We also discussed other objectives such as bridging the gap between British Pakistanis and Pakistanis living abroad.

“We view the development of Pakistan Rugby League as a catalyst to further develop the sport in India and across the whole of South Asia. There’s clearly an appetite for it and we need to ensure that the right initiatives and planning are put in place.”

Rugby League in Pakistan a step closer Entrepreneur keeps

global promiseBy Ismail Mulla

Hussain visited Leeds Metro-politan University to deliver a lecture on leadership and to talk to students about his expe-riences in the world of business.

Born in a village in Pakistan he moved to Bradford at a young age with no prior education. He

faced whilst growing up, such as integrating at school due to language barriers and also dealing with a then rampant racism problem at Eccles Hill School in Bradford, where he attended.

Hussain said: “My father used to say, you’re not stupid, you’re not thick. Learn the language and get yourself an education.” He also had to deal with Bell’s palsy at a young age.

After training to be an engineer he ended up in business and he now owns several businesses including a restaurant he set up a couple of years ago called Deeva. But his greatest achieve-ment has to be his philan-thropic work, of which the crown jewel is his organisation Global Promise.

Global Promise is an organisa-tion set up to help victims in the immediate aftermath of the 2006 Boxing Day tsunami. He said: “I grew up with this concept of you keep a third for spending, a third for saving and a third of charity. What’s the point of being the richest man in the graveyard? “

In 2008 Hussain was awarded an MBE for services to business

and charity. He was also awarded the crown of IAB social entrepreneur of the year.

He once walked from Leeds to London, alongside a victim who lost both legs in the July 7 terrorist attacks in London, for an initiative called WALKTALK. It was an attempt to get people

engage in conversation and learn more about one another.

“I set crazy challenges and then set out to conquer them,” he said, and no challenge could be crazier than trekking Everest, which he did to raise money for charities such as MacMillian and Help For Heroes.

Imparting with some wisdom the ever philosophical Hussain told students: “If you put your mind to it everything is possi-ble.”

ON June 6th 2011, Sony announced the much rumoured PSP replacement console, known as the PS Vita (Vita is Latin for Life) at the yearly games conven-tion, E3 in Los Angeles.

The console launched on February 22nd

delays of nearly up to a year. Below is my review of the console after a few days of usage.

HardwareOn unboxing the PS Vita 3G console, the hardware looks and feels extremely striking and sturdy and also somewhat heavy (no pun intended).

The weight of the console is extremely noticeable when compared to the PSP. Holding it in the hand feels very natural, especially with the two plastic cut outs

holding the device.

The PS Vita is louder than its predecessor, the PSP, due to the Vita having stereo speakers. However, if you plan on using this as a replacement to an iPod speaker dock or something, don’t bother. The quality is poor but comparable to the PSP, which is to be expected from a portable games console.

ControlsThe buttons feel extremely tactile when pressing them down, and give a ‘click’ feel, compared to the PSP which gave a ‘pressed’ down feel and would eventually lose that feel over a few months of use. The analog’s are a huge step up from the PSP, with dual analog sticks allowing for more precise controls in games.

However, one of the down sides of the right analog stick is how close it is to the X button. When playing some games, I

found that I accidently hit the analog changing the direction I was pointing in games.

Sony has added a completely new addition to the PS Vita in terms of controls, the rear touchpad. It’s basically a touchscreen with no screen and at the back.

The rear touchpad is useful in some games, but hard to get used to due to its inverted controls. There were also times that the rear touchpad did not register

unnatural at times when using the touch-

control settings.

DisplaySony has given the Vita an OLED capaci-tive touch screen which looks amazing in terms of its colours. All the colours are extremely vibrant, and the blacks are

times to see whether you are looking at the bezel or the screen.

The resolution of the display is 960*554 at 220 pixels per inch and screen size is 5 inches. In comparison to an iPod touch, the pixel density isn’t as good, and this is noticeable in games where you can see rough edges.

The touch screen is extremely responsive and precise, with no need to press things on the screen multiple times in order for the system to register your action.

The bottom lineThe PS Vita is one of a kind and has some great hardware and software which is sure to impress casual and enthusiasts gamers alike.

When an attorney, Thomas Clarke, learns of their predicament he sets out on a heart-stopping journey to bring the two girls back together and save his marriage.

Thrilling, fast-paced and gripping, this vivid novel kept me on the edge constantly. I threw my hands in the air at each triumph and almost threw it across the room at the frustrations of each failure, such was the power of the message the author was getting across.

The main theme of the novel is the sex trade, but there is no graphic content. Instead sorrow, shame and the surging emotions of the girls, gives readers an

Corban Addison, author of ‘A Walk Across The Sun’, kindly took the time to answer some of our questions about his novel.

Where did you get the idea for ‘A Walk Across The Sun’?I am an attorney by training, and I have always had an interest in international human rights. I became familiar with

school, and it disturbed me deeply to learn that slavery, which I thought had died in the 19th century, was not only alive and well but the fastest growing criminal industry on the globe, an industry that no only involved exploita-tive labour but also (and quite volumi-nously) the forced prostitution of women and children in almost every country. The idea for the book itself was my wife's. Three and a half years ago, she came to me and said that I should

Why did you choose to write a novel to tackle this issue?

I cite many of them in my Author’s Note at the back of the book. There is also a substantial volume of reportage available in government, academic, and journalistic channels on the subject. All of this was critical to my research, but the more I read and talked to people,

particularly high-brow academic research, has a limited audience. Most

prior interest in the subject. But a novel that stands on its own as a compelling human story can reach readers across the spectrum, from people interested in the subject matter to people who have never heard of it before.

The developers have been nice enough to

It's not every day that a composer gets to hear a score they've written being played by a live orchestra. But on Febru-ary 5th, 28 classically trained musicians gathered in CBC's Glenn Gould Studio to record a score that VikasKohli had written.

Award-winning composer and music producer VikasKohli is known for his expertise at fusing together genres as varied as punk, hip-hop and Bollywood popp.

Moroccan Chickpea SoupIngredients

For the chilli and garlic pitta crisps• 4 pitta bread, cut into wedges • 50 ml olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, crushed or grated • 1/2 red chilli, deseeded and chopped • pinches sea salt

For the soup • 3 tbsp olive oil • 2 stalks celery, chopped • 1 onion, chopped • 2 1/2 tsp freshly ground toasted cumin • pinches sugar • 400 g tinned chickpeas, drained • 600 ml vegetable or light chicken stock • 1 x 400 g tin chopped tomatoes • 1/2 lemon, juice only • 2 tbsp coriander, leaves and stalks, chopped

Method

1. Preheat oven to 200C.

2. For the chilli and garlic pitta crisps: Mix the pitta wedges in a bowl with the olive oil, garlic and chilli. Place on a baking tray in a single layer and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 7-8 minutes or until golden brown.

3. For the soup: heat the olive oil in

a saucepan and add the celery, onion and some salt and pepper. Cook on a low heat with the lid on until soft but not coloured, for about 10 minutes. 4. Add the cumin and cook for another minute, then pour in the tomatoes and all their juices along with the sugar. Add the chickpeas and the stock and simmer for 5 minutes.

5. Once the simmering has taken place add the lemon juice and chopped coriander. Check the seasoning and season to taste. Serve in a bowl with the pitta crisps on the side.

Moroccan BBQ Lamb BurgersIngredients• 800g lean lamb mince• Small bunch spring onions,

• 1 tsp smoked paprika• 11/2 tsp coriander seeds, roughly crushed (if you can't get seeds, use 1/2 tsp ground coriander)• Fresh mint leaves, to garnish

Method

1. Put the mince into a large bowl. Add the spring onions, paprika and coriander and season well. Mix together using your hands, then shape into 12 mini burgers. Pop on to a large plate, cover and set aside.

2. Preheat a griddle pan over a high heat. Cook burgers in 2 batches on the hot griddle for about 5 minutes, turning once, until golden all over. Set aside.

3. Thread 3 burgers on to a wooden skewer and rest 1 on each tomato salad. Serve with salad, a generous dollop of hummus, a toasted pitta and a few mint leaves scattered over

Strawberry Macaroon Recipe

Ingredients

• 50g ground almonds• 140g icing sugar• 2 large egg whites• 1 tbsp caster sugar• Pink food colouring paste• 3 tbsp good-quality strawberry jam

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan170°C/gas 5. Line 2 large baking trays with non-stick baking paper.

2. Sieve the ground almonds and icing sugar together into a large bowl. Put the egg whites into a sepa-rate bowl, and using an electric hand whisk, beat to soft peaks. Add the caster sugar, and whisk until glossy. Fold into the almond and icing sugar mixture, along with a very small amount of the pink food colouring. Mix until just combined and evenly pink - the mixture will reduce as the air bubbles in the meringue burst.

3. Put the mixture into a disposable piping bag, snip o 1cm from the end. Pipe small blobs (about 1 heaped teaspoon each) onto the baking paper, spaced apart, so you have about 50 in total. Set aside for 10 minutes to dry - this is important as it gives the macaroons the correct texture. Bake for 5 minutes, then turn the whole sheet of paper over - the macaroons will be stuck so won't fall o. Bake for another 4 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool.

4. Peel o the baking paper from the macaroons, then sandwich 2 together with a tiny blob of straw-berry jam in the centre. Repeat to give you 25 in total.
