Apply Texture Crackle2. Note – This background technique of Texture Crackle will give the effect that the design is painted on an old piece of wood that has had many years of paint layers.

Place about 1/8th cup of Texture Crackle on your palette. It is a bit stiff, but when you work it with the palette knife it becomes creamy and easy to work with. Pick up a small quantity of Texture Crackle with the edge of the palette knife and begin applying it to the surface. Work with small amounts at a time to give you more control.

Your application should be very thin. Lay the knife fl at to apply the medium, then stand it up on the edge to lightly scrape away excess.

Apply randomly in small overlapping patches to avoid developing a set pattern. Randomly allow areas of the wood surface to remain free from the Texture Crackle application; these areas will take the basecoat color differently and add more interest.

Repeat steps applying Texture Crackle to the surface of the banner. Allow to dry well and then sand very lightly to remove any sharp or loose pieces; wipe off. Note – When applying thin applications of Texture Crackle, it is less likely to be damaged and would be easier to repair, drying time is much faster with a thin application and less product is be-ing used.

Painting Instructions:Transferring Design3. With a traced pattern, gray graphite and a stylus transfer the horizon line to the surface. Use the graph ruler to aid in the transfer of any straight lines, by dragging the stylus along the ruler’s edge.

Basecoating Background4. Slightly pre-dampen a shop towel with water, tap into the Glaze Medium, pick up a small amount of the Light Blue mixture (French Grey Blue + Snow White 1:2), dab off on your palette paper, then rub the color from the ho-rizon line up into the sky area approxi-mately 1/3 over the Texture Crackle surface in a circular fashion, changing directions frequently; refer to photo for placement.

Keeping the shop towel moisten with Glaze Medium allows the color to move easily over the texture.

Dampen another shop towel with water, repeat steps with Deep Midnight Blue, apply from the top of the sky area, working down into the Light Blue mixture, blending between the two colors; refer to photo.

Repeat steps with Deep Midnight Blue, apply to the banner.

Land Area5. Basecoat the land area with Fawn; using the glaze wash brush. Corner load the angle with Espresso, randomly chisel fl oat* over the land area; for shades. Repeat step with Plantation Pine.

*chisel fl oat by corner loading the angle, blend off on your palette, lay the bristles of the brush fl at on the surface, chisel edge up. Push the paint on the bristles front left to right in a scratching mo-tion, allowing the bristles to pull a broken line that is slightly fl oated.

Transfer Remaining Design6. When dry, use the gray graphite paper, a traced pattern and a stylus to transfer the moon and lighthouse and structures to the surface. Use the graph ruler to aid in the transfer of any straight lines, by dragging the stylus along the ruler’s edge.

Moon and Refl ections7. Slightly pre-dampen the area around the moon and lighthouse lens room with clean water, pick up thinned Light Blue mixture on the angle brush and pit-pat over the two areas to create a glow; mop to soften. If step needs to be repeated, be sure the fi rst application is dry.

Basecoat the moon with the Light Blue mixture. Two coats are suffi cient, leaving a blotchy look will give the appearance of shade areas. When dry, corner load the angle with Snow White, fl oat a highlight along the right side.

Background Autumn Shrubs (on the right)8. Load the heel of the med Texture brush with Heritage Brick, the toe with Cadmium Orange, lightly dance on your palette to blend between colors, dance shrub clusters on the surface to the right of the lighthouse and structures. Be sure the Heritage Brick is at the bottom of each cluster for shade and at the top of each cluster with Cadmium Orange.

Then load the Texture brush with Orange Twist, randomly and lightly dance across the top of each cluster for highlight.

For proper use of the Texture brush, use the fol-lowing method. Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpen-dicular to your palette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off – keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note – this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe.

Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in different direc-tions in between your fi ngers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Al-low some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don’t end up with a globby or muddy look.

Background Shrubs (on the left)9. Load the heel of the med Texture brush with Plantation Pine, the toe with Avocado, lightly dance on your palette to blend between colors, dance shrub clusters on the surface to the right of the lighthouse and structures. Be sure the Plantation Pine is at the bottom of each cluster for shade and at the top of each cluster with Avocado.

Then load the Texture brush with Marigold, ran-domly and lightly dance across the top of each cluster; for highlight.

Undercoat Lighthouse and Structures10. Using the appropriate size shaders, under-coat the white walls of the lighthouse and struc-tures with one coat of Grey Sky.

Basecoating Lighthouse and Structures11. With the appropriate size shaders basecoat –Warm White – lens, watch room, tower wall, structure wallsSlate Grey – wall foundationsHeritage Brick – roofs, chimneys

Lighthouse12. Corner load the angle with Slate Grey, fl oat a wide shade down the right side of the tower wall. Repeat with a narrower fl oat of Graphite; to deepen. Corner load the angle with Snow White, fl oat a highlight down the left side of the tower wall.

Corner load the angle with Slate Grey, fl oat shad-ing down the right side of the lens and watch room. Then corner load the angle with Snow White, fl oat highlights down the left sides. With the 10/0 liner and Graphite, pull the lens room panes. Double load the 10/0 liner with Graphite + Slate Grey, pull the walkway base, rail and sup-

ports. With the 2 shader and Graphite, pull the window on the tower wall. Pull the window panes with Warm White; using the 10/0 liner. Then with the 10/0 liner and Forest Green, outline the win-dow.

Corner load the angle with Black Plum, fl oat a shade on the right side of the lens room roof. Then corner load the angle with Terra Coral, fl oat a highlight on the left side of the roof. Place a dip dot of Black Plum at the top of the roof for the ventilator ball. With Black Plum, pull a line up from the ball for the lightning rod; using the 10/0 liner.

Structures13. Wash over right side wall with Slate Grey; using the appropriate size shaders. Wash over the right side sections of the foundation with Graphite; using the 2 shader. Corner load the angle with Slate Grey, fl oat shading across the top of the left side walls.

With Black Plum, pull the roof lines; using the 5/0 liner. Walk shade over the whole roof on the right structure and the right sides of the chimneys with Black Plum. Corner load the angle with Terra Coral, fl oat a highlight across the top of the other roofs and the left side of the chimneys.

Double load the 5/0 liner with Black Plum + Heritage Brick, pull the side roof lines. With the 5/0 and Forest Green, pull the roof trim lines.

With the 2 shader and Graphite, pull the windows. Pull the door with Forest Green. With the 10/0 liner and Warm White, pull the window panes and door knob. Then with the 10/0 liner and For-est Green, outline the windows, pull window ledges and top door ledge.

Leaves 14. Corner load the angle with Espresso, randomly chisel fl oat* under the structure; to deepen for shade.

I used a small leaf stencil for the random leaves in the design. The line drawing for these leaves is also given. Position the stencil on the surface of the land area; refer to photo for placement. Se-cure with the Frog Tape or hold with your fi ngers. Refer to photo for placement

and color scheme.Green Leaves - Load the med stencil brush with a bit of Avocado, swirl the brush on a blue shop towel to remove excess. Apply color in a circular motion one direction and then in a circular motion in the other direction (changing directions frequently) over the fall leaves stencil. Repeat step with Avocado Dip, randomly and lightly brush over the Avocado. Repeat with Marigold. Repeat steps for orange leaves using - Heritage Brick, Cadmium Orange, & Orange Twist

Carefully remove stencil by holding one end with your fi ngers and lifting the opposite end. Clean stencil and brush immediately.

When completed, this application should have a slight distressed appearance. If it is too solid or perfect, simply use a moist piece of paper towel the Glaze Medium to gently rub away some of the excess color.

*Repeat steps for the leaf stenciling on the banner.

Ground Foliage15. With the sm Texture brush and Plantation Pine, dance in the green ground foliage under the structures; refer to photo for placement.
