Okay, let’s put it on the table. It’s August. It’s MAPA LIVE. It’s the MACC. It’s me. And it’s
another “dark” show.
These dark shows aren’t chosen because some brooding, melancholic cloud hangs over my desk waiting to rain-down the mis-ery of mankind. Quite the opposite is true. For me, threading through these stories are reminders of humankind’s possibilities to shift our world for the better. They tell us we have the power to create our lives and our world to any shape we can imagine. And theatre as an event of communal storytelling brings us together in a shared experience that opens our minds and hearts to the unscripted conversations and dawning visions that are the first light cut-ting through that dark cloud. For me, that is what hope looks like.
When I was a kid (Did I really just use that phrase?) growing up in the mid twentieth century mid-west, the Lutheran church was an integral part of my life. I remember being drawn to the Biblical stories set in the scenery of nightscapes. Christmas Eve: the nativity surrounded by darkness except for the lighted stable interior and a black sky filled with quietly twinkling stars and one huge beacon heralding the news. Holy Week: Maundy Thursday, the Garden of Gethsemane, Good Friday. These events drew me deeper into the story, stirring my soul and capturing my imagination more than the morning of Easter. Why?
Sifting through potential answers, I came to this Joseph Campbell quote:
“The black moment is the moment when the real message of transforma-tion is going to come. At the darkest moment comes the light.”

That moment of change is what so profoundly interests me as an artist—the struggle of individuals to transform themselves and, in the process, their world. It draws me to the shows whose themes, content and characters are pushing past complacency and risking all to embrace new and untold possibilities. Jekyll & Hyde The Musical is this kind of story.
Stretching past author Robert Louis Stevenson’s treatise of scientific hope to alter man’s notion of good and evil, our story sweeps us thematically towardf a transforma-tion of a man’s soul, and as the character of John Utterson says “…and mine too” and I would add, our audience’s also.
This expansion becomes possible because of the addition of a complicated and beauti-ful love story between Jekyll/Hyde, Emma and Lucy. It is through the eyes of these two women that we understand that Jekyll & Hyde are not two men but one. It is their synthesis that Campbell points out in mythology signi-fies “the sacrifice of the visible entity for a transcendent good” and in this case it is accomplished because of and through love.
There are many themes that this show asks us to be mindful of: the repression of the indi-vidual to the mores of society; the screaming desire to be set free from the façades hiding our true selves; that burning want to be seen and loved for all that we are. Marianne Williamson’s insights ring true:
“Until we have seen someone’s darkness we don’t really know who they are.
Until we have forgiven someone’s dark-ness we don’t really know what love is.”
It is that kind of love that brings us out of darkness and into the light. And in the spirit of duality fueling this show, I wear the mantle of Director of Darkness with pride and humility.

Will Kimball (Henry Jekyll/ Edward Hyde) was a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Council National Audi-tions in 1996 and 1998. He completed his undergraduate degree at University of Wash-ington. After many years as a school teacher, Will returned to graduate studies in opera and music theatre, graduating from Arizona State University’s Lyric Opera Theater. Will went on to perform in such productions as Aida, Oklahoma!, Don Giovanni, Faust, The Fantasticks, Beauty and the Beast, The Mikado, and several world premiere musicals.
Leighanna Locke (Emma Carew) has been a regular on the Maui stage since 2005. Re-cent credits include Ellen in Miss Saigon, Fantine in Les Misérables, Nellie in South Pacific, Maria in The Sound of Music, and Marian in The Music Man. Leighanna was featured as the soprano soloist in Hayden’s The Creation and Mozart’s Requiem and was a guest artist with the Maui Pops Orchestra in 2009. She received her BFA in Musical Theatre from Notre Dame de Namur University.
Kathryn Holtkamp (Lucy Harris) is beyond ecstatic to be making her debut on the Maui musical theatre stage in this tantalizingly challenging role of Lucy in Jekyll & Hyde. Kathryn has toured the US playing an Argentinian dictator’s mistress and a glamour cat way past her prime. She has also enjoyed the wonderful opportunity to sing big band jazz halfway across the globe in Tokyo, and top 40 pop hits and jazz all over the Valley Isle of Maui. She would like to thank MAPA for giving her this
opportunity to share her insane passion for musical theatre with the Maui community.
John Galvan (John Utterson) John Galvan is new to the community theatre scene on Maui and this will be his debut with MAPA. He is very excited to have the opportunity to perform with the company! Originally from Thousand Oaks, California, he has been a Maui resident since 2003. Along with a lifelong passion for music, John is also an entrepreneur. He is the Executive Chef and Owner of Private Chefs Maui, a private chef and catering company he started from the ground up and has dedicated the last 10 years of his life to building. He has most recently performed with the Maui Choral Arts Asso-ciation and Maui Masterworks Choruses.
Joey Schumacher (Sir Danvers Carew), 29 year Hawaii resident (originally a Hollywood, CA boy) has been making his home on the Maui stage and around the globe (US, Alaska, Japan, Russia, India) for 16 years with Maui’s Unto One Ministries performing principle characters in notable productions: Birthday of a King, Indestructible Life, The Christmas Story; recording credits on Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winning albums Pure Paradise & Na Leo Ho‘onani: Hosana. Performances with MAPA LIVE include Evita: Agustin Magaldi, Les Misérables: Babet/Major Domo, Fiddler on the Roof: Lazar Wolf, Miss Saigon: Ensemble. Other local associa-tions include Maui Choral Arts and Maui Pops Chorus. Getting that call for a role from David Johnston is a euphoric feeling like no other. He’s an actor’s director.
David C. Johnston (Director) is the Executive & Artistic Director of MAPA. He has more than 30 years of experience directing professional, educational and children’s theatre productions. He has been an acting coach and directing consultant for the last 25 years. Mr. Johnston received his MFA in Theatre/Directing from the University of Oregon and his BA in Speech and Theatre from Augustana College with special studies in theatre management and directing at the University of Minnesota.
Gary W. Leavitt (Music Direc-tor/Conductor) is the Artistic Director of Maui Choral Arts As-sociation. Since arriving on Maui in 2001, he has appeared on stage in Les Misérables (MAPA), Bermuda Avenue Triangle and 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (ProArts) and most recently as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (MAPA). Gary was Music Director for MAPA LIVE’s productions of Miss Saigon and Evita and has performed and conducted choral and orchestral works across the United States and Europe. He received his training in Vocal Performance and Conducting at New Eng-land Conservatory in Boston.
André Morissette (Choreog-rapher, Costume Consultant) has been a Maui resident since 1988. A recipient of Hawai’i State Choreographic Awards, his choreography has been performed on the Mainland and internationally. Hawai‘i commis-sions include The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Studio H’Poko, Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center,

Maui OnStage and Baldwin High School Performing Arts Learn-ing Center. His collaborations with MAPA include Evita, Oliver, Next to Normal, Stellaluna, Miss Saigon, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables and Damn Yankees. André currently teaches dance at Seabury Hall where he designs costumes and graphics for the Performing Arts Department.
Dan Hays (Executive Scenic Designer) has had an affiliation with MAPA since 1992. He is Resident Designer and Technical Theatre Instructor at Portland Community College. Dan has designed over 200 shows in his career over the past 25 years. He’s excited to be working with MAPA again after the successes of Evita, Miss Saigon and Les Misérables. Dan thanks his wife Kirsten and children for all of their support.
Jamie Devereux Tait (Primary Scenic Designer & Master Painter) is a scenic and textile designer from New Orleans and cur-rently based out of Portland, Oregon. He graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2003 where his focus was printmak-ing. Having been raised by a cabinetmaker and a textile artist, Jamie’s aesthetic sensibilities have always been rooted in the material, the tangible. He has spent the past decade
focusing on development as a craftsman and found that his personal artistry and reverence for traditional techniques were best married through scenic and textile design. The products of Jamie’s work are that of his hand. This consideration and diligence lend to the inherent beauty and quality they possess.
Mark Astrella (Lighting Designer) Before becoming the Technical Director of the MACC, Mark had also been the MACC’s Stage Manager and Lighting Director. Before moving to Maui in 1995 he had been running lights for 20 years for several bands, had an event production company and a graphic design business. As a painter, illustrator, musician and lighting designer, Mark loves to go wading in the ocean of creative arts.
Matthew Moreau (Light-ing Designer) is the Lighting Director at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and has served as Lighting Designer/Director/Operator for various corporate, theatrical, and live entertain-ment events including Legend of Ko’olau and the Broadway on Ice National Tour. Other design credits include the 2012 Black Box Production of Rabbit Hole, Cloris Leachman-I’m Eighty Four, the RCCT production of Smokey Joe’s Café, and the VSPA
production of Seussical. Mat-thew is grateful and excited to be co-designing Jekyll & Hyde and helping support the Maui theatre community. Cheers!
Vanessa Cerrito (Costume Design) once again joins the MAPA design team as this year’s costume designer for Jekyll & Hyde. Vanessa has costume designed a number of produc-tions at MAPA including last year’s production of Evita. She is a dance teacher at Seabury Hall and costume designs for many of the dance and theater performances along with André Morissette. Vanessa is one of Maui’s accomplished dancers and choreographed MAPA’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
Kenneth Peter Lee (Costume Design for Emma’s wedding dress) is a Hawaii resident who studied at Syracuse University and then went into the fashion industry. His great love is the theatre, and he has designed for plays, musicals, revues, ballet and opera. Mr. Lee’s most recent work with MAPA was designing the wardrobe for Eva Perón in last summer’s produc-tion of Evita. He also designed the wardrobe for Cosette and Marius in MAPA LIVE’s produc-tion of Les Misérables.

And all our volunteers, including the volunteer cast of Jekyll & Hyde and their families
In each of us, two natures are at war — the good and the evil. All our lives the fight goes on between them, and one of them must
conquer. But in our own hands lies the power to choose — what we want most to be, we are.

ACE PRINTING AD?
With the success of our programs, we’ve outgrown the capacity of MAPA Main (the former National Dollar Store) and with the closing of Steppingstone Playhouse in 2015, we need a space for our smaller productions.
We’re excited about our plans to add a new performance venue in the heart of Wailuku. As part of the Wailuku revitalization efforts,
MAPA’s new space will help create a
thriving arts district, a win-win for our
students, parents and audiences as well as for Wailuku
restaurants and businesses.
Watch for news about MAPA’s participation in the emerging arts district in Wailuku.
We’d love to have your support.
Exciting news! MAPA is
actively looking for property
to expand our operations in
Wailuku.
