Our Scotty CheerleadersThe Scotty volleyball and football teams weren’t the only ones to put in a performance in front of a live audience this past Monday night as the Scotty cheerleaders were also out in full force. They are, from left, McKenna Gagne, Lily Helland, Tayte
Prewett, Karissa Liebelt, Breanna Barstad, Desi Rae Dible and our Scotty Dog Mascot. They’ll be leading Scotty fans this season. As GHS Athletic Director and Head Coach Greg Liebelt urge when home games roll around, “Pack the house!”

While Glasgow got treated to more of a light show last night — only .14 inch of rain fell here — Saco had flash flooding with Highway 2 and other streets with at least two to three inches flowing over them. The drains weren’t keeping up with the runoff as about 3/4 inch of rain dumped down within 15 minutes. Hinsdale also had some heavy rainfall mixed with hail along with gusts up to 50 miles an hour. Before that storm hit Saco and Hinsdale, around 9:00 p.m. Dodson had hail nearly two inches in diameter along with heavy rain.

Even though most of Montana has been blanketed with a recent super soaker, all early season hunters need to make wildfire prevention a top priority. About 5,000 Montana archery hunters can head afield (it started Aug. 15 with their 900 series antelope hunting licenses), Montana’s archery-only hunting season for deer, elk, antelope, black bear, wolf and mountain lion begins Sept. 6. Most upland game birds seasons open Sept. 1. The bighorn sheep archery season begins Sept. 5. Hunters driving on roads with drying vegetation along the edges or growing down the middle of a two-track road can cause late-summer fire starts. Hunters should:• Drive only on established roads.• Avoid roads with tall vegetation in the middle track.• Never park over dry grass and other vegetation.• Carry a fire extinguisher—or water-filled weed
sprayer—shovel, axe, and, a cell phone for emergency calls.
• Restrict camping activities to designated camping areas.
• Build campfires only in established metal fire rings, if allowed.
• Smoke only inside buildings or vehicles.• Check on any fire restrictions in place.
“Being able to respond is essential in the first few seconds of a fire start when it’s small and easy to extinguish,” Aasheim said. “Have an action plan for fire starts as well as for other types of accidents, severe injuries and other emergencies.” For up-to-date details on fire and drought-related restrictions and closures, visit FWP’s website at fwp.mt.gov. I was shocked, confused, bewildered as I entered Heaven’s door, Not by the beauty of it all, by the lights or its decor.
But it was the folks in Heaven who made me sputter and gasp-- the thieves, the liars, the sinners, the alcoholics, the trash.
There stood the kid from seventh grade who swiped my lunch money twice. Next to him was my old neighbor who never said anything nice.
Herb, who I always thought was rotting away in hell,
was sitting pretty on cloud nine, looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, “What’s the deal? I would love to hear Your take. How’d all these sinners get up here? God must’ve made a mistake.
And why’s everyone so quiet, so somber? Give me a clue.”
“Hush, child,” said He. “They’re all in shock. No one thought they’d see you.”

Letter to the Buzz
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, NFL Chief Marketing Officer Mark Waller talked about the league’s ideas to get young people excited about the NFL. One of those ideas was a push to get fantasy football put into the elementary school curriculum. From the Wall Street Journal: “We want to make sure that at the younger age, there’s a format for fantasy and a way to play that will allow you to engage. But also use it educationally. It’s a complex game, fantasy. You should be able to learn a lot, particularly around math. How many points do I need? How many points does this player get? We’re also trying to work with groups to get the concept of fantasy based into the curriculum of elementary schools. If you love football and you teach them math through football, the chances are you may teach them better math and more quickly.”
Sounds more likely that the NFL wants to sell more merchandise. Those who excel at Fantasy Football put in a lot of time doing it and a lot of time on a computer. That could cut into a child’s homework time, although there are probably a few dads out there who would love to help their kids win at Fantasy Football rather than helping with social studies.
Friday Funnies by Sugar
Leaving Wyoming for Montana, that bowl of chili I had eaten in Sheridan was starting to take an adverse affect, so I decided to make a stop at one of those rest areas on the side of the road. I went into the restroom. The first stall was taken so I went in the second stall. I had just sat down and started to concentrate on the job ahead when I hear a voice from the next stall ... “Hi there, how is it going?” Okay, I am not the type to strike conversations with strangers in restrooms on the side of the road. 1 didn’t know what to say so finally I say: “Not bad ...” Then the voice says: “So, what are you doing?” I am starting to find that a bit weird (like, duh ...), but I finally say: “Well, I’m on my way back to Montana ...” Then I hear the person say all flustered: “Look I’ll call you back, every time I ask you a question this idiot in the next stall keeps answering me.”
Question: What do you call an aligator wearing a vest? Answer: An investigator!
Question: What do you call a sleepwalking nun? Answer: Roamin’ Catholic.

Going to check on the baby late at night, a wife found her husband standing over their baby’s crib. Silently she watched him. As he stood looking down at the sleeping infant, she saw on his face a mixture of emotions: disbelief, doubt, delight, amazement, enchantment, scepticism. Touched by this unusual display and the deep emotions it aroused, with eyes glistening she slipped her arm around her husband. “A penny for your thoughts,” she said. “lt’s amazing!” he replied. “I just can’t see how anyone can build a crib like this for only $46.50!”

The Montana Department of Revenue announces it has successfully completed its annual requirement to certify taxable values of property in the state’s 56 counties. This year, department offices in 52 counties certified the values before the August 4 deadline. Offices in four counties finished on the deadline date. Under state law, the department’s property assessment offices are responsible for providing the total taxable value of property to each taxing jurisdiction by the first Monday in August. The values included in the certification process include mobile homes, personal property and business equipment, real property, and centrally assessed properties. “Performing our job with accountability to local governments builds our working relationships with them,” said Revenue Department Director Mike Kadas. “It allows for efficient and effective tax administration locally and statewide.” “Certifying values timely and accurately allows local governments to begin their processes of setting budgets and mills in a timely manner,” said Cynthia Monteau Moore, Administrator for the department’s Property Tax Assessment Division. “If we provide good service, then local governments can better serve and be accountable to their communities.” Local governments establish their budgets and set their mill levies for property tax calculations and collections based on the certified taxable values provided to each taxing jurisdiction. Property tax collections are the primary revenue source for local governments to provide public services such as police and fire protection, schools, roads and bridges, and health and social services.

Don’t wait until it is too late. Hunters who haven’t already asked permission from private landowners to hunt need to do so as soon as possible. Montana law requires hunters to obtain permission for all hunting on private land. Whether pursuing upland game birds, coyotes, gophers or any other wildlife, hunters must have permission from the landowner before hunting on private property. Landowners may grant permission in person, over the phone, in writing or by posting signs that explain what type of hunting is allowed and under what conditions hunting may occur on land owned or controlled by the landowner.
