Support the food bank e Girl Guides are looking for food. And Salmon Arm Fall Fair o cials are asking mem-
bers of the community help the guides gather non-perish-able food items for the Salvation Army Food Bank at the parade that moves out at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
All nonperishable food items will be appreciated; how-ever, as always, there is a need for proteins’.
If you happen to forget your food item, spectators are also welcome to help give back by making a cash dona-tion.
And if that doesn’t work, take some food to the fair where the food bank will be collecting items throughout the weekend.
With farms o limits to visitors due to biosecurity proto-cols, the BC Chicken Growers’ Association, in partnership with the BC Broiler Hatching Egg Producers’ Association, has developed Poultry in Motion™, a mobile mini barn, in an e ort to increase public awareness and educate consum-ers. is fully equipped mini barn has been featured at fairs, schools and agriculture events around the province.
e trailer consists of three sections, showing two life stages of broilers, plus their parent stock – the breeders. Each section is set up as a very small scale poultry barn, showing you how poultry farming is done in BC.

e Salmon Arm Fall Fair has a long and inter-esting history.
In keeping with the traditions of North American agricultural fairs, it has, since its inception in 1897, brought the people of the Shuswap region together to celebrate the com-munity. We show o our livestock, our garden and eld produce, our handi-work, and we have fun.
Initially, the fair was a one-day event. Exhibits of apples, owers, vegetables, butter and grain were set up in the hall over McGuire’s store. Athletic events and horse racing were included as part of the festivities. 1898’s
fair saw an increase in the range of ex-hibits that included a greater variety of fruits and dairy pro-duce, fancy work, and livestock such as poultry, dairy stock and horses. e second fall fair also included a base-ball game between Enderby and Salmon Arm.
ose were the beginnings. e fair has been held in a variety of ven-ues - the hall above McGuire’s store, the Farmer’s Exchange Building, the Agri-cultural Hall - later, the Drill Hall, J.L. Jackson School, and the Memorial Arena.
e fair has been held yearly since 1946. At rst there were no commercial concessions or ex-hibits. e Women’s
Institute served dinner and tea; local service clubs ran the carnival and sold ice cream, hot dogs and co ee. A midway was introduced in 1954, and by 1957, commercial exhibits were also estab-lished. As time went on the fair became a two and then three day event. During the sixties, Friday afternoon was declared an o cial
holiday; stores were closed so that em-ployees could attend the fair.
History Over the years
the fair has intro-duced a variety of events, many of which are still featured: baby show (1909); “best loaf made by a man” (1928); log-ging show (1949); gymkhana (1953); parade (1963); mutt show(1969); horse-shoe pitching con-test, Salmon Arm royalty coronation (1973), old time d-dlers’ competition, chariot and pony chuckwagon racing (1972); archery dem-onstrations(1978); dog training dem-onstrations (1979); tug of war, sheep shearing, sheep to shawl competition; heavy horse skid-ding(1980).
But the most
important aspects of the fair, its very heart and soul, are the display and competition of ag-ricultural products, domestic livestock, and home arts. at focus has not changed since 1897. is is more than just an event the public pays to see or hear; it is one in which every person of the community can become part of by entering an exhibit. As Gordon Priestman said in the Observer, Sep-tember 7, 1973: “ e fair is for everyone. And the more of us to get involved, the better it will be.”
