AUGUST 2016 BUCKEYE BREEZE To plant a garden is to believe in summer, to have faith in tomorrow and to have hope in the future. First, I’d like to apologize to District #3 for not being able to attend their monthly meeting hosted by Waverly Auxiliary #2227 held on July 10, 2016. As you are probably aware, PSMP Shirley Pilarczyk passed away and I attended her Eagle services on that same day in Bedford, Ohio. PSMPs’ Paddy Rawlins, Gladys Petrie, and Harriet Luke did a beautiful job paying tribute to her life and accomplishments. I would also like to thank every Eagle Sister that attended the services. I can now say I’m no longer a virgin…..on traveling via Amtrak. We left Toledo bound for Reno, NV on Thursday, July 14. The views from the observation car were spectacular. God sure did a great job on this wonderful country! We saw mule deer, elk, moose, prairie dogs and bunny rabbits. The trip was pretty uneventful, until we were delayed in Colorado by a brush fire. On Saturday before our arrival in Reno, we celebrated my birthday with a group of Eagles from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and a few other states. It was a total surprise when they sang “Happy Birthday” and they all seemed to be in tune. After our arrival in Reno for the International Convention, the first thing we did was attend the God, Flag & Country competition. Ohio should be very proud because we had two international winners out of the three age groups! All competitors did a fantastic job. Later that day I was also treated to another rendition of “Happy Birthday” by GMPE Judy Johnson and Terry along with others at our dinner table. On Monday, July 18 th , for the opening ceremony, I was extremely proud to carry the Ohio State Flag. It was thrilling seeing all the Ohio delegates waving their Ohio flags and cheering me on. When I reached the Michigan delegates, they also cheered me on with their shouts of “O-H-I-O”. Probably the first time for many of them to shout out our state name! There were many informative meetings held throughout the week. On Friday at the Grand Installation, Ohio’s own Helen Poehner was installed as Grand Madam President Elect. What an honor for her and Ohio! Sisters, please plan on attending the International Convention in July 2017 in Grand Rapids, MI to see her installed as GMP. The Ohio Aerie is also well represented with Chuck Cunningham serving as Grand Worthy Secretary and Rick Powell as Grand Worthy Chaplain. My August plans include the following: August 6 th – Northwest Zone Prep at Ashland #2178 August 7 th – Anniversary Celebration at Lancaster #2120 August 20 th – All Zone Day at the State Rec Park in Bellefontaine – mark your calendar and come enjoy the day August 23 rd – Anniversary Celebration at Reynoldsburg #3261, home of JPSP Gwen Salyers August 27 th – Picnic at Austintown #3298 Finally, “THANK YOU” to everyone for accepting your appointments as charity chairmen, district leaders, and zone coordinators. Because of you, our Auxiliaries will grow just like our flowers! ATTENTION ALL SISTERS!! IT’S TIME TO SUBMIT YOUR ALTA BROWNING SMITH AWARD NOMINATIONS!!

Did you know Alta Browning Smith was the first appointed Jr. Past Grand Madam President of the Grand Auxiliary in fraternal year 1952-53; was instrumental in organizing the Grand Auxiliary; was one of the first Supervisors of the Grand Auxiliary; AND SHE WAS FROM OHIO??? She was our Ohio State Auxiliary President in 1950-51! This award is to recognize some of our local heroes!! The Alta Browning Smith award is given to recognize a sister who is not necessarily a PMP, PSMP, etc., but someone that has been dedicated to our organization; one who has volunteered her time and talents, etc. In addition—outside activities count as well. For example, her work with local food banks, little league coach, active in church activities, local town council member, works local dances, or maybe active in Girl Scouts. In other words, someone who volunteers their time to help others. And don’t forget about family. Did/does she care for ailing parents, spouse, or significant other? Did/does she have children with special needs? Did/does she volunteer time at local hospitals, nursing homes, or Veteran’s facility? When preparing your nomination, you need to be specific and list all their efforts within the Eagles and in her community. In this submission, details count!! The nomination form is included in this issue of the Buckeye Breeze and can also be found on our website www.ohioaux.com. All nominations must be received by State Secretary Debbie Sharp no later than October 24, 2016.

pleased . . . . #2436 Chagrin Falls ~ 13 Seed Packets
