An Experiment in Faith
What happens if you take eight
young people and three adults from St.
Mark’s and send them off on a great
adventure to the ELCA national youth
gathering in Detroit, Michigan? We
tried that experiment this July with
Miora, Becca, Hannah, Nolan, Sarah, Grace,
Jordan, Paige, Gary, Bridget and Keels. That
they all returned, not well-rested, but enthusiastic
is the first thing we learned. The second thing
they learned is that they will never be the same
again. We started the experiment by bringing our
group together for a unified goal. Then they
spent months working together to raise the mon-
ey necessary for them to attend the gathering.
Neither God or the Holy Spirit are ATMs. It
takes people working together to make things
happen; it takes commitment; and it takes sacri-
fice. Soon they discovered that going to the gath-
ering wasn’t just about their own experiences but
about being the church. Then our group started meeting with youth
groups from three other ELCA congregations in
Jacksonville. Suddenly, the church got bigger
again. They became friends with other kids who
had the same questions about life and faith, kids who
“had to go to church” but who found that wasn’t so bad. To make sure this little group from Jacksonville got
to know each other, we put them in a bus for 45 plus
hours. We thought that the bus ride would certainly
make the group come together to see that they are part of
the something bigger than Jacksonville and bigger than
themselves. It did. After 45 hours in the bus, all these kids and adults
were ready to be poured out into a city that several peo-
ple said they should stay away from—Detroit. Like all
kids, they didn’t listen. Suddenly they found themselves
being part of an even larger church—larger than St.
Mark’s, larger than the four congregations. They found
themselves as part of a church that was even larger than
the 65,555 who came to Detroit. They learned that the ELCA is not just their church,
St. Mark’s, but it is a church that belongs to Christ,
whose unity is in Jesus Christ, who gathers us around
word and water, bread and wine. It is in Christ’s church
that the good news of Jesus liberates us and gives us the
freedom and courage to wonder, discover, and boldly
participate in what God is doing with us in the world. That is the result of our experiment this summer.
None of those 65,555 who gathered in Jesus’ name in
Detroit will ever be the same. Thanks be to God!
— Pastor Thomas S. Hanson
Music Notes
Falling Into Rhythm and Melody
I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer. My thanks to all those who have been singing in our summer choir. All singers are welcome to sing with us while the summer one-service schedule continues. We meet at

9:30am in the music suite to review the hymns, psalm, and any other liturgical music. We also prepare an easy musical offering for the service at 10:00.
It won’t be long, though, until the summer heat gives way to fall weather – and the fall schedule!
The St. Mark’s Ringers will hold its first rehearsal on Wednesday, September 9th, from 5:30 -6:30. This is so we can play for “God’s Work – Our Hands” Sunday on September 13th.
On Wednesday, September 16th, the regular Wednesday rehearsal schedule will resume: St. Mark’s Ringers 5:30 – 6:15 Vespers 6:15 – 6:45 Alleluia Ringers 6:45 – 7:25 Festival Choir 7:30 – 9:00
Descriptions of our musical ensembles
Festival Choir – This group sings the full range of an-cient to modern music as the musical offering for the 11:00 service. They also lead the hymns and liturgical music. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evening from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. and Sunday morning at 10:30. The ability to read music is helpful, but not required.
Matins Choir – This ensemble does not have a midweek rehearsal and provides musical leadership at the 8:30 service. We meet at 8:00 to rehearse the hymns and li-turgical music, and then we prepare an anthem for the musical offering. The ability to read music is helpful, but not required. Most of the music we sing is somewhat familiar and/or easily learned by anyone who can grasp a tune quickly.
St. Mark’s Ringers – Our advanced handbell ensemble has ringers who have played handbells for more than 20 years. The repertoire varies, covering everything from classical repertoire to hymn-based selections. The abil-ity to read music is required and previous handbell expe-rience is preferred.
Alleluia Ringers – Our entry-level handbell group fo-cuses on building music reading skills and mastering handbell techniques. We have plenty of space available in this group! This is your chance to put those piano les-sons from your childhood to use! If you don’t already read music, we will teach you how. For complete new-bies, we may need to schedule a couple of private les-sons before rehearsals begin. If you are interested in playing, please let Tony Cruz know.
LOL (Loving Our Lord) Choir – Our youth choir meets after the 11:00 service each Sunday. We sing in worship a few times each year. New singers, grades six through high school, are always welcome. As we add singers, I hope that someday we will be able to take this group on tour.

Letter of Thanks
Dear Patrice,
I just wanted to say how appreciative I am about the
VPK graduation pictures. I didn’t see the photo tucked
in the back of the bible at first. Later, I saw it and it’s
now one of my favorite photos of my son of all time.
Thank you!!
Wendy Gillis This is a thank you I received from one of our par-
ents. Her son started as a Dove at just a few months old. The Ark has touched their lives and so have this church and its members. The Webers took her son’s picture. The same day that I got this thank you a graduation pic-ture turned up on my Facebook feed. It was a child that is going to 6th grade. His mother posted it and men-tioned their great memories at St. Mark’s Ark. Her child’s picture was taken by Bill Daugherty.
We touch families and send their children to public and private schools, but our impact stays with them long after they leave.
God’s peace, — Patrice Roux-Neal

Men In Mission
Work and Fellowship
The July Men in Mission workday was cancelled due to the holiday and vacations. A small group did get to-gether on Saturday, July 11, to do the A/C filters and work on the church kitchen floor. Eric and Gina Olson checked and changed A/C filters while Ken Sohacki worked on the drain lines for the A/C air handlers.
Robert Brown and Bernie Giancola removed a sec-tion of tiles in the kitchen that had loosened from the floor and creating a hump. Putting the tiles back in place will be done in the next couple of weeks.
Our next scheduled workday will be Saturday, Au-
gust 1, 2015. There is some plumbing work to be done in the fellowship hall rest rooms. If anyone has skills with the Sloan/Zurn toilet flushers, please contact me. A notice will go out via the phone tree with the work planned and as always all are welcome. Thanks again to those that attend these work days. It is critical that this regular maintenance be done. See you in August!
Property
There were no major projects or problems this
month. Our next meeting will be in August and we will
review and prioritize projects and maintenance items.
Thanks to all for your continued support of our facility.

WELCA News – Priscilla Circle
We had a good first half of 2015 and would like to share some information with you and encourage you all to help out with our projects.
In February we had a joint WELCA meeting with a Religious Icon presentation that was very educational. The end of March was a very successful Easter Egg Hunt. This year there were 32 children hunting for eggs and having a great time. Their parents and grandparents were there to support them. In April there was the First Coast Spring Gathering at Spirit of Life Lutheran Church on New Berlin Road. Six members of St. Marks attend-ed.
There are two projects that our circle is presently working on and we and would like to bring these to your attention: 1. Collecting clothes for the Riverpoint Behavioral
Health Center. Some of these patients are homeless or without family support. They arrive sometimes with only a hospital gown and are in treatment ses-sions with patients who are in their everyday clothes.
They also need to be clothed when they leave the program and the patients are very appreciative for these items. We will continue to collect clothing for them and distribute the items when we get them.
2. Young Adult Program – Our circle has set up a pro-ject to keep in touch with our young adults after they graduate from high school. Whether they continue their education, start a new job or still live at home, we would like to keep in touch with them. We have sent them “care packages” emails, and notes of en-couragement. We presently have six names on the list and would like you to share any other names and addresses with us so we can add them to our list. Please share this information with the church office or with Kim Dodds.
We look forward to the second half of the year and would appreciate all your prayers and support as we con-tinue to do God’s Work.
If you are not a member of a WELCA Circle and are interested, we would encourage you to attend any of the 3 monthly circle meetings. All women are welcome!

More Summertime Thoughts for Consideration
Here are more Summer time thoughts for consideration. o Be safe this summer. Remember that Saint Mark’s is
there for you throughout the year. Please remember that your church is dependent upon your kindness and support to remain open. Summertime, as you would expect, presents a challenge to many church-es. This is also true at Saint Mark’s. Your faithful support is appreciated.
o Please complete and return the estimate of giving form which was recently mailed to you. This covers the last half of 2015 and is for financial planning purposes. Thank you!
o Jesus equates feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and caring for the sick with putting God first; thus, binding together the two imperatives of his Great Commandment--- love God and neighbor. Matthew 25:44-46.
o During September of this year you will receive Stewardship planning data for 2016. —Uncle Stew

Supper Club
We are gearing up for our 2015-2016 year beginning in September. Please be watching for updates and look for the sign-up which will be posted on a bulletin board at Church. There will be a kickoff dinner fall with the entire group, followed by 2 gatherings in smaller groups, one in the fall and one in the spring. The smaller groups are held in the home of the host/hostess. The finale is a group event so we can all come together again in May. When you sign up just indicate if you will be willing to host and what season you would prefer to host, as well as the number of guests you would be comfortable host-ing in your home. We have had groups of 6, 8, 12, etc. so it's what is convenient & fun for the Host/Hostess. If you do not have room to host a dinner in your home you can still participate in all dinners, just let Jenny know.
We want to see this wonderful tradition continue so please join us! If you have any questions, please call or see Steve or Jenny Hicks, or Mary Mittelstadt.

Thank Yous
To my St. Mark’s Family, Thank you so very much for the cards and expres-sions of sympathy in the recent death of my mother. It has been very difficult to lose both of my parents within eight months! I don’t know how people get through life’s difficulties without faith in God, and a strong church family. I know I couldn’t. Your love and prayers continue to sustain me. Thank you, again.
In Christ, Lynn Doiron
Dear Friends, I can not thank you enough for all your support dur-ing my illness. Knowing I was in your prayers gave me hope and peace. I am so blessed to belong to such a lov-ing, caring family as St. Mark's. In Christian love, Bonnye Bell
Dear St. Mark’s Family,
Glenn and I want to thank you all for the wonderful cards, notes, and prayers you have sent during this very difficult time. Glenn so appreciates getting all the greet-ings. We are so fortunate to be part of such a caring church family. With love, Mary Mittelstadt

Nourish Team
Thank You!
The Nourish Team and I wish to thank the 45 mem-bers of St. Mark’s who encouraged and supported us in the recent series of classes on end-of-life decision mak-ing. Due to work schedules, illness, vacations, etc. not all could participate. We are especially grateful then to those members who led our panel discussions and pro-vided so much useful information. It was suggested that we extend the content and time frame of the series in a similar program next winter. Watch for announcements. Our belief in this subject is summarized in this statement by Dr. Ira Byock, author of DYING WELL: “Cultural values and expectations related to dying must shift away from the denial of death, and the viewing of dying as a time of inevitable emotional distress, and barely avoidable physical suffering, toward an under-standing of dying as a part of full, even healthy, living and toward accepting care for the dying as a valuable part of the life of the community.” —Marjorie Broward
